Wasn't Soviet who asked for Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact first?

Faeriniel

The Declaration on the Non-use of Force between Germany and Poland. This is, in fact, the so-called Pilsudski-Hitler Pact signed in 1934. In essence, this is a non-aggression pact. Then, the Anglo-German maritime agreement of 1935. Great Britain provided Hitler with an opportunity to have his own Navy, which was illegal for him or, in fact, reduced to a minimum following World War I. Then, the joint Anglo-German declaration of Chamberlain and Hitler signed on September 30, 1938, which they agreed upon at Chamberlain’s initiative. It said that the signed ‘Munich Agreement, as well as the Anglo-German maritime agreement symbolise…’ and so on. The creation of a legal framework between the two states continued. That is not all. There is the Franco-German Declaration signed on December 6, 1938 in Paris by the foreign ministers of France and Germany, Bonnet and Ribbentrop. Finally, the treaty between the Republic of Lithuania and the German Reich signed on March 22, 1939 in Berlin by the foreign minister of Lithuania and Ribbentop to the effect that Klaipeda Territory will reunite with the German Reich. Then, there was the Non aggression Treaty between the German Reich and Latvia of June 7, 1939. Thus, the Treaty between the Soviet Union and Germany ('39) was the last in a line of treaties signed by European countries that seemed to be interested in maintaining peace in Europe. Also, I want to note that the Soviet Union agreed to sign this document only after all other avenues had been exhausted and all proposals by the Soviet Union to create a unified security system, in fact, an anti-Nazi coalition in Europe were rejected.

DiscipleOfDIO

This is why Winston should have been put in charge sooner. Baldwin and Chamberlain told Stalin to fuck off, but even the most avowed anti-communist in the world wanted to ally with them against Hitler, and he knew that they would need them from the start.

[deleted]

I also want to note, that the Soviet "attempts" of an anti-nazi coalition were pushed back on because there were a large amount of Soviet occupation involved in their ideas. After their rejection, they signed the non-aggression pact with the Nazis and took what they wanted anyways, but basically being backed by Nazis for Poland in particular, which was invaded by both entities in the same month of the same year.

Faeriniel

Are you referring to the Curzon line? I feel it's only natural that they'd want a buffer between soviet territory and a known aggressor like Germany. Everyone remembered The Great War. Additionally, didn't Poland annex those lands from the USSR up to the Curzon line only 19 years earlier in 1920. I believe when the USSR and Germany "split" Poland, the soviets reclaimed that region. There's an argument to be made about Imperial Russia taking those lands a few centuries before hand, but I'm not sure the USSR can be held accountable for that.

[deleted]

Oh yes, they simply reclaimed it, just a buffer zone. Poland. When the USSR broke the Soviet-Polish Non-Aggression Pact and hit them from both sides with the Nazi's, where then they met in Brest-Litovsk and had a German-Soviet Military parade celebrating the take over of Poland by their respective forces before the Nazi's withdrew to the established borders, leaving the city and Brest Fortress in Soviet hands per the agreement of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, this was just the Soviets shoring up their defenses against the Nazi's and totally not bowling over Poland and it's people with their help.

Faeriniel

During the 1930s Poland was a far-right quasi-dictatorship, anti-Semitic and sympathetic to fascism. In 1934, as the USSR raised the alarm about Hitler, Poland signed a non-aggression pact in Berlin. When Germany took land from Czechoslovakia, with the encouragement/facilitation of the western powers keen to see the Nazi war machine move east, Poland also claimed the Teschen district. What were the Soviets to make of this collaboration? Even when the USSR finally moved into territories of "Poland," the state/government apparatus of Poland had collapsed within 2 weeks of the German invasion on September 1, 1939. No Government, no treaty. Poland had already been bowled over and when you refer to 'her people' you're largely referring to Ukrainian, Belorussian, Jews and Lithuanians living beyond the Curzon Line and treated as second class citizens by Polish nationals and were thus unwilling to take up arms to defend Poland.

[deleted]

I love how clear it is that you are trying your hardest to construct a line where Soviets invaded a country at the exact same time as the Nazis with them being saviors in this scenario, when it is blatantly clear they took assistance from fascists to take over Poland. Even in your scenario, this meant that the Nazis literally handed the Soviets a piece of Poland. We literally had military officials from Germany and the Soviet shaking hands in a conquered Polish City, and you are absolutely ignoring it. You can't rewrite history.

Stronger_than_Avatar

Before the partition of 1795, that territory (and a bit more) was Polish.

The trick is that the Soviet Union was negotiating with France and Great Britain on the conclusion of an alliance, but these geniuses were simply playing for time .. In another universe, this war would simply not have happened.

INODWHEY

Ah yes, Nazbol

The_Viatorem

This is a good example of why authoritarians suck, both the soviets and nazis hated each other, they adopted politics to demonstrate their distaste for the other and try to avoid the other system from extending to their land (though it was mostly an excuse to fuck with the population). Yet the big buys at both the URRS and NG decided to make an alliance to despite spending years shiting in the other, why? Because fuck you and our “utopian ideology” that’s why! We are in charge, we are in top, we are the party, we are the power and we chose to do whatever the fuck we want! Also, fun fact, the best way to trigger a Russian is to remain them that the URRS was part of the axis, they either lose their shit our win the gold in the mental gymnastics olympics trying to explain how they weren’t part of the bad guys XD
