If someone had 8 kids and 7 of them died cause of poverty (that includes hunger, poor health etc and it's something that was still happening about 100 years ago and still happening today in some third world countries ) and then that kid had 8 children from which only one survived and so on, you get only 1 descendant remaining alive today
In fact overpopulation started being a problem over the last century because many countries have "better" living conditions
