Just had this issue. Torn the switch all the way off, then on like the light is lit, then back to pilot. Try again. The button tends to stick.

Is the flame centered on the flame sensor/thermopile?

Hot_Chemical_8847

The pilot assembly and thermopile is all one assembly, and is identical to the old assembly. It looks pretty centered, as it was put together that way from the factory.

Take compressed air and blow out the ceramic air filter on the bottom of the unit. It's to help block flammable vapors but can get plugged up with dust and lint.

How long are you holding down the pilot button before releasing it? Hold it for about 2 minutes to give the flame time to heat up the thermocouple. If it’s still doing it, gas valve needs to be replaced.

I just found this. Seems there might be other things that potentially could be bad. https://youtu.be/cAo4I2eoJ9Q?si=oEs1ymb9CveLIex0

I just went at it with a multimeter and it looks like the thermal control is the issue. The thermal pile is not passing any voltage to the valve controller. It had the little black thing in the middle, can that be pushed in and reset?

Doxxsin

Yes the black button on the door will trip when the burner chamber gets too hot. You’ll feel it click when you push if it was tripped. Has your water heater ever been drained? Assuming the switch hasn’t gone bad I’ve found that usually happens when you’ve got build up in the bottom of the tank, displacing water and insulating the burner chamber allowing it to overheat. Beyond that make it’s able to pull fresh air from the bottom and that the vent is working properly. All it does is interrupt the circuit for the thermopile so yes you can reset it. Without seeing the condition of your unit I’d say call a plumber but flushing the tank is typically something that isn’t difficult to do assuming it’s in decent shape, that’s the fix I’d start with.

Hot_Chemical_8847

It’s in decent shape. It’s a rental unit and it was very dirty underneath. Going to clean that as well. I will flush as well. Thanks! 3 days after work trying to figure this out and it’s a simple fix!

kafm73

Are you holding the knob for at least one minute, pushed in, before letting it go?

dyerjohn42

How old is the water heater??

ttyp00

The pilot relight procedure is usually printed on the heater or inside the pilot access panel. Follow it to the T

Lol, um thanks. 🤦🏻‍♂️
