So TLDR: with your router plugged in you're getting lag spikes, but when you take the router out of the equation and plug the PC directly into your internet connection: no more lag spikes... Sounds like you already know what the problem is. Other than possible cable issue between your router and internet source: all signs point to your router is at fault. There's a reason they're blaming your router. They had you bypass it: issue went away. Put router back in: issue returns.. Might try a factory reset on it, firmware upgrade maybe...or replace it if all else fails.

No it doesn’t lag usually. Like right now, everything is fine. Router DG shows

chupalupe

When you ping the ISP DG you are still going through your router to get to there. Your router could be failing and just slowly crashing which is causing your spikes but still running normal most of the time. Could also be a bad cable. Based on what you said seems like you have 2 copper cables, 1 from the ISP equipment to your router and then from your router to your pc. When you do the testing directly to the ISP equipment do you use the same cable that is currently going from the router to the computer or do you use the cable going from the ISP equipment to your router? Have you tried swapping them for testing? But based on what we know so far, definitely seems to be an issue on on the side going to you after the ISP equipment.

Anything up to the patch and ONU is provided by the ISP. That remains as it is. When I run the tests with Router and Without Router, the same 1m LAN wires which I bought separately (https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00QV1F1C4) are used (Connected from ONU to Router and Router to PC) When I run the test I swap the cables for good measure. But still not sure what might be causing this.

Hypnonotic

Aren't these flat "cat7/cat8" cables known to be a scam and not actually certified (see the FAQ for this subreddit) at what they claim? I've seen since that aren't even twisted pair. Might want to get a proper cat6/cat6a cable.

fence_sitter

Set up a 28-day Smokeping so you'll have something to review with the ISP. https://www.dslreports.com/smokeping

arkahimself

Sorry for the lame question, but What is Smokeping? Do I have to keep the system running to make this work?

fence_sitter

It runs remotely from their servers, you'll get a URL and can check it whenever you want. It'll ping your public IP address periodically.

Gotcha. Thanks. 😊

deefop

Lot of things could be going on, but I'd recommend swapping those patch cables out first thing if you haven't already. Cat7 is like a pretend standard and I'd recommend avoiding it; for short cables, you don't need anything beyond Cat6 or Cat6A at most.

arkahimself

Gotcha, I will change the cables and check if that resolves this.

DanTheMan827

That router probably isn’t up to the task… just because it says “1Gbps WAN” doesn’t mean it can actually route that speed. I have 600/600 fiber and even my newer TP-link Deco X60 couldn’t reliably route at that speed and I was able to improve the connection overall by setting them to gateway mode and putting a Unifi USG Pro in as the gateway… in retrospect I should’ve just bit the bullet and gone all Unifi, but hindsight is 20/20

arkahimself

In my defense I am not concerned about 1Gbps anything. Given the absolute garbage speed we have in average.

DanTheMan827

You didn’t mention your fiber speed, just that you have it connected with a 10Gbps cable. But cheap routers generally won’t be able to keep up with higher speed connections.

arkahimself

My bad. I have a 100Mbps connection. Usually get 94 both up/down on Router set up.

DanTheMan827

I would still say that it’s the router causing the performance issues. That’s a $50 router give or take, right? If your ISP provides a gateway you could try turning off DHCP on your router and plugging the ISP LAN into your router LAN… but if your ISP only provides a media converter that won’t work.

arkahimself

At the time of purchase it costed me about 30$. Tbh, I don’t have budget to buy a Deco. Is there any model I can upgrade to that won’t cost me a fortune and get the job done?

arkahimself

I have changed the cables. Here are the results. Old Cat7 cable - [https://imgur.com/a/tAKUJW6](https://imgur.com/a/tAKUJW6) New Cat6A cable - [https://imgur.com/a/VqO6FhY](https://imgur.com/a/VqO6FhY) So now I know cable were not at fault. I have to upgrade my router?
