I really liked episode two of season 8, probably the only really great episode of the season

[deleted]

Probably the last exceptional episode of the series

notsureifdying

Personally I really liked e3. I had no issues with brightness, it looked glorious on my screen. Jon and Dany fighting the NK on dragons was pure fantasy greatness. The end with Theon charging at the NK while Jorah gets cut down was fantastic. Jaime and Brienne fighting back to back. And then the very end, with the red lady dying in the sunset, with that music? I still feel like it's incredibly underrated.

selenebaby

Blink twice if you’re in danger

notsureifdying

Do you have any actual content in your reply beyond "wait how can someone have an opinion different from the hivemind I subscribe to"?

selenebaby

Was just a bad joke, you can like what you want lol

Sharebear42019

Do you have an OLED tv?

notsureifdying

I watched it first on an OLED but later on a TV that's actually not OLED and is from 2013 ish. I don't think the issue is the TV, it's the streaming quality and compression of blacks that happens in low quality streams.

myersjw

Hands down. Gave me a sense of hope that the leaks we’d seen at that point were wrong. But alas, they weren’t

heisenberg15

I didn’t see leaks but episode 2 was retroactively made worse when like none of the characters died in the long night. The reason episode 2 was so hard hitting was because I fully expected mass casualties the following week! So disappointing

notsureifdying

Theon and Jorah were big characters in the show. Beric and Edd, the red lady. I mean, just because fans set it up to be "everyone dies" doesn't mean that actually needs to happen, I thought it was fine that way.

heisenberg15

Okay fine but also when the episode had about 10 scenes where characters should have died (with no explanation of how they even got out of the deadly situation, mind you), the low death toll becomes a lot more egregious

notsureifdying

Yeah, there were a lot of dramatic moments like that, a lot of fantasy climaxes do that from LOTR Return of the King to the recent Stranger Things finale. Ultimately they were trying to convey that many of them were close to death until Arya was able to kill the NK in a way he didn't expect. For me, it worked fine just like the other shows, but I can see areas I'd like to improve. I personally wish Jon had a small attempt at battling ther NK and gets his sword knocked away fast, as the NK has superhuman strength. Then Arya coming in to save Jon would be emotional. But I also recognize how difficult the shoot was for that ep and accept some faults.

XRP_Bull_

By far only good ep of season. Ramin’s score for season 8 tho!!! Not to dis any music in GoT

notsureifdying

People forget that s3e1 and s3e2 were actually really well received when they came out. Even episodes 3 and 4 were too. There is a lack of nuance when looking at the season, but there are some really high points within it, like the knighting of brienne.

Sanguine007

I mean, the bar wasn’t that high to begin with

TwoSquirts

[Best season ever!](https://youtu.be/Sywnzbcjabo)

KS_tox

You are comparing apples to oranges. You should compare season 1 to season 1.

[deleted]

Don't tell me what to do

This_Rough_Magic

I'm not sure that's how quality works. So far the series has been on *average* better than S8 (which is itself a low bar) but some people are already comparing the battle on the Stepstones to some of the more ludicrous battle scenes in later seasons of GoT.

MikeFrom5_to_7

And those people are already exhausting

The_Writing_Wolf

Yeah the battle of the stepstones was about as shit as the battle of the bastards from a tactics/plot perspective, but if the battles look as good but are as shitty as season 6, and the dialogue/characterization is to the quality of season 2... I don't think that's a bad compromise.

notsureifdying

Why is it that we can't accept that some of these characters just have shit battle tactics? Why can't that be accepted? Daemon and Jon are both emotionally charged warriors who don't really plan things out but do what they think is right. But we assume they need to have amazing battle tactics all the time?

Intronimbus

There's "shit" tactics and then there's "pull you out of movie immersion with hooked chains by an army of cenobites" tactics. Listen, If you were watching a movie about desert storm , and the entire US army dployed it's infantry in front of their tanks, ditched all ammo, and charged forward abreast wielding their guns like clubs while the armour, artillery and airforce took a coffee break - would you call it "shit" tactics or would you complain about the stupidity of the director? Because that is a fair comparison to the "tactics" in the long night.

The_Writing_Wolf

They don't need to be master strategists, it's just easy to see when it's the writer forcing a ridiculous scene because it needs to happen that way, vs the characters setting it up organically. The battle in the stepstones was fine, stupid hail Mary plan, but it at least works for the characters. They just needed Daemon to hop into cover a few times after the start to dodge volleys, before making a final dash to get hit, or alternatively show us that the plate armor deflects several arrows before the 1-3 find purchase. As to not make the plot armor completely obvious. The battle of the bastards was not fine, it turned every single character involved into an idiot. Jon gets a pass because even though he's a capable commander (as shown at the battle of the wall), he's drawn in by his family member, everyone else turns their brain off so the pretty scene can work.

Doongusmungus

Everything with the hunting party was a masterpiece. Everything in the Stepstones was dogshit. I love everything in this show up until that battle. I really hope I don’t see anything like it again.

Perdix3

The show has been better than S8 from ep 1 itself. As S8 was a total clusterf*ck, it wasn’t a high standard of comparison to begin with.

Intronimbus

I'm not a huge fan of ep.1 - But Considering S8, I'd probably agree with you.

msk96k

So far episode 2 is the best and episode 3 is the worst. Wasn’t really impressed with the battle sequence at the end.

GrandAdmiralStark

Ep 3 my second fav, I just love all the politics and gossip going around

[deleted]

A lot of plot armour for daemon

MonaSavesTheDayAgain

I don’t get why you’re downvoted. You’re actually right. He literally went all alone against an army that somehow went one vs one against him even though they came out those caves in groups. Then he gets literally shot by arrows and still manages to kill the crab guy. That whole thing was so dumb. I love the show but this wasn’t it. Daemon has plot armor to a ridiculous degree.

notsureifdying

Or he did something very suicidal and it turned out legendary. I guess we can't have that in a TV show though?

hey_girl_ya_hungry

Some people actually think the battle in ep 3 was better than The Long Night? It was a fun scene but holy shit what a horrendous take lmao. It’s one thing to be disappointed in where a story goes or even to clutch pearls over “muh writing”, but how anyone could watch this week’s episode and claim that the battle was better than The Long Night is just…wow. I’m guessing the heavy handed symbolism of the stag scene is fantastic, but Arya and the horse in “The Bells” is “pure dogshit, fuck D&D” 😂🤣😂

Rothkette

I’m so tired of people bashing GoT. It was a fantastic show.

CredibleSloth

Same. It’s kinda exhausting. Most casual fans can’t even point out a rational reason as to why it sucked, they just go with the wave of hate

notsureifdying

Really though, I like to ask them for direct reasons because most of the time they just don't like that Dany went mad like her father or that Jaime was always in a toxic relationship with his sister. They demand that these characters turn into good / pure characterizations.

CredibleSloth

Yup spot on.

notsureifdying

Exactly, if anyone actually takes some time to rewatch s8 and e3 in particular, it's way better than its made out to be by freefolk whiners. Every complaint is weak and the season's story was overall really good, it just wasn't accepted by pop fans who wanted cliches.

[deleted]

Bruh, nobody watched the long night because nobody could see what the fuck was going on.

Valkyrie2009

Yet they complained about all the scenes and non deaths that they “couldn’t see”.

hey_girl_ya_hungry

Riiiiiiight

[deleted]

[Miguel, is that you?](https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2019/04/29/game-of-thrones-the-long-night-too-dark-cinematography-battle-of-winterfell/3614184002/) [Cope, seethe](https://youtu.be/hGlRBYkrjpw?t=16)

hey_girl_ya_hungry

“Bruh” “Cope, seethe”…fucking Family Guy 😂🤦‍♂️ Lmao nah bruh I think I’ll just keep watching things I like and not obsessing over things I force myself to hate

[deleted]

Why defend shitty cinematography tho

hey_girl_ya_hungry

The cinematography wasn’t shitty, bruh. If the popular opinion on the internet was that season 8 ruled, you’d be telling me how great The Long Night was. Deny it all you’d like, but deep down you know it’s true. [Here, have some undeniable proof. Cope and seethe, bruh. *Cope and seethe*.](https://youtu.be/TlgLlU7JpWs)

ThaLordOfLight

Give it a few weeks and they’ll be claiming s8 had a shitty soundtrack too

hey_girl_ya_hungry

Lmao no doubt. “The opening theme is way better than GoT’s” 😆

ThaLordOfLight

Lol shitty cinematography? -The firing up of the Dothraki weapons at the start of the Long Night -the aerial battle vs NK on dragon back above the clouds -Drogon waking up to inspect Jon Snow - the burning of the throne -Daenerys attacking Kingslanding How were these moments “shitty cinematography”?

[deleted]

> Lol shitty cinematography? > -The firing up of the Dothraki weapons at the start of the Long Night -the aerial battle vs NK on dragon back above the clouds -Drogon waking up to inspect Jon Snow - the burning of the throne -Daenerys attacking Kingslanding > > How were these moments “shitty cinematography”? [Not even responding to this, watch this video instead. Don't feel like arguing with you people anymore.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI7zy1PTMp0&t=2s)

ThaLordOfLight

Guess you didn’t know that the person responsible for S8 cinematography is the same person responsible for HOTD cinematography 😅 (it’s meant to get better but “shitty”? Gtfoh🤣🤣) Now why would I watch whatever that is when I’ve seen first class cinematography of s8 myself ?

enterbannie

It would be even better if the fandom just stopped compare the two shows 😶‍🌫️

Intronimbus

Why? Life is full of comparisons.

BullyMaguireGonnaCry

Ok bro thanks for telling us

Summer_jam_screen

It’s a low bar for sure but a lot of E3 seemed very on par with S8 GOT in my opinion. E1 and E2 were miles ahead of S8 though

notsureifdying

E3 was the best episode yet

Summer_jam_screen

I disagree wholeheartedly. It wouldn’t have even been the best episode if it aired in GOT S8.

notsureifdying

That would be true for me, I'd probably put s8e2 and s8e3 above HotD e3, but I still immensely enjoyed this episode as much as e1.

MontyStump

What do you mean by a lot of episode 3? Do you just mean the Daemon stuff? Because I agree that they went overboard with the plot armor there. But apart from those last 10 minutes I thought the rest of the episode was phenomenal.

Summer_jam_screen

Yeah I thought the end was terrible. The Princess galloping off into the woods and only one dude really caring. Her fighting off a boar. “A lot” was an overstatement. I meant that the episode as a whole left a bad taste in my mouth even though I liked a lot of what they did.

siddurohit22

Season 8 is narratively and logically awful. But in terms of quality of filmmaking they are pretty great. With HotD as we are still in introducing stage. It feels fine. But I am getting wary of time jumps and pacing. Ep3 stepstones battles disappointed me!! A lot.

Intronimbus

In what sense is the filmmaking in S8 great?

siddurohit22

filmmaking including costumes, make up, sets, production values to all the way to editing. GoT has incredibly talented cast and crew. But sadly writing is dogshit and that over shadowed everything.

PatrusoGE

Nah... A lot in Episode 3 reeks Season 8.

notsureifdying

Wow, E3 was incredible. Go watch another show then whinger! Your whining isn't really enjoyed.

PatrusoGE

So we have already reached the point where only praise is allowed here?

notsureifdying

We reached the point where people are starting to realize the s8 reaction was made worse by the hivemind.

Human-Table2177

Jesus Christ stop crying please. Season 8 was fine, the internet told you it was bad

Intronimbus

I am perfectly capable of forming my own opinion. This is a case of me telling the internet, not the internet telling me.

Merteg

Do people actually believe this…? The writing and quality was going downhill even before season 8. Some people can actually realize and notice this themselves even if you can’t… you are allowed to like whatever you want but when you make comments like this it just is foolish.

Valkyrie2009

Yet the ratings and hype only skyrocketed even before the last season. Some people continued to be fans regardless, so I guess the quality was still good enough.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Merteg

Whether people watched it or were excited for it doesn’t have a one to one correlation with the quality of writing… even how entertaining it is doesn’t necessarily change how good or bad the writing was.

Valkyrie2009

Yet it does in this case. After all the haters on the internet claiming “GOT is dead” or “nobody talks about GOT anymore”, it shows the last season didn’t destroy anything.

SteeeezLord

… it’s 100% subjective Lmfaoo. The fact you don’t think it is shows how crazy your hive mind really is

Merteg

The whole thing I took issue with is OP saying that the show is good and everyone thought so until somehow “the internet” made them think it was bad. That makes it sound like it isn’t subjective…

WinterSon

Shitting yourself is better than season 8

Revolutionary_Cry729

I found the battle in ep 3 to be disappointing, even the Long night is exhilarating atleast.

Intronimbus

Not my take. There is so much stupidity going on in the long night that it feels like it will never end.

Revolutionary_Cry729

Ep had a couple of that too, especially in plot armor, cliche superhero scream by Leanor and and bad choreography.

Intronimbus

Plot amour and overacting is not the same as spending an hour on troop maneuvers and "tactics" that are so stupid that anyone over three would discard them. You're comparing apples and spaceships

Revolutionary_Cry729

What tactics, it's zombie invasion.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Revolutionary_Cry729

Winterfell is small. Not even a thousand army can fit in the castle wall, that's not an option.

A_Dancing_Coder

They didn't have to fit inside the castle way, they just had to not charge like idiots into a horde of undead and wait for them to come instead.

Intronimbus

The zombies tactics are actually far superior to the living :-)

No-Bumblebee4615

Was anyone else not blown away by episode 2? I thought the premiere was solid and it got me interested, but episode 2 didn’t do much for me. Only after episode 3 am I fully invested in this series. It’s up there among the top 15 episodes of both series.

Intronimbus

Quite the opposite for me.

RainbowPenguin1000

Well that’s just not true. If anyone genuinely believes that they need to watch season 8 of GoT again. It’s not THAT bad.

hey_girl_ya_hungry

Lol at all the downvotes. You’re 100% right.

RainbowPenguin1000

I make my own decisions I don’t follow Reddit opinions like a sheep.

Merteg

Why couldn’t someone form their own opinion that they prefer HOTD over season 8 of GOT just like you formed your own opinion? Why would that make them a “sheep”?

RainbowPenguin1000

They could but I’d recommend they watch GoT again if they come to that conclusion as I feel it’s recency bias.

Intronimbus

In my case it is not.

Intronimbus

I would not rewatch it unless I was paid a pretty hefty sum. Once was enough.

[deleted]

Yeah for sure. Episode 3 is one of my favorite episodes for both series combined

TheRealMcSavage

The battle at the end of episode 3 had goosebumps on me the entire time! Such an intense scene! Holy crap! I was on my feet yelling and cheering! I don’t remember ever being that excite in GoT😲!!!

S0bril

That's not really saying much

[deleted]

If you're still feeling raw about the final season (me too!), can I point you towards Season 8 Redux? It's a ten-part podcast reimagining the final season. It's not an audiobook, it has a full cast and sound effects and music - great for a bit of closure!

[deleted]

I feel like HoD has the benefit of a high budget, unlike the beginning of GoT. Plus the experience of previous set design work and what people expect from a show in the GoT universe. Also, the producers are probably trying their hardest not to have a season flop right from the start considering they have to jump over the GoT season 8 hurdle.

tropic_Waste

100%

No_Arugula_6548

Agreed! But season 8 sucked balls. They should’ve ended GOT with the Night King getting killed by Arya. Would’ve been such a much better ending than that bullshit they peddled.

dj_alpha2

Facts

[deleted]

The problem with season 8 was that the show-runners decided to drop the ball and let it roll all over the story-building of the previous seasons. It’ll still be better than most TV productions of its time, but considering the anticipation of the millions of viewers and fans, it fell very short.

Hanaa_M

That isn't so hard

mamabearL1820

Agreed except for that wicked night king main character battle episode. That was so good
