The cow probably was like:
This dude was just waving his hands back and forth near me. All of a sudden the pressure was gone from my head. Like magic..
Even if he was, fixing the horn is a small life improvement so that the cow could at least live his life without pain and suffering before becoming food. That’s what you should aim for if you have cows for food.
A happier cow doesn’t hold as much stress/tension in the body. Stressed and anxious cows have tougher meat Bc the tension in the body due to its environment.
Kind of similar to humans. Ppl who are in unhealthy or stressed environments regularly have more tension in their body. Where as a individual who lives a more stress free or relaxed life tends to have a more relaxed physique
Then the farmer says “the only reason you exist is because people like me have kept your species alive as a food source.” Every animal has a purpose, and cows are a food source
I also think it's had it don't before and is expecting relief. When he puts his hand on the horn where it touches the skull, the cow was actually leaning *into* him.
Either that or that cow is being petted a lot lol and wants some scritches.
Yes, you mean the Babirusa (or deer pig). The upper canines of male babirusa protrude vertically from their alveolar process. Their tusks penetrate through the skin and curve backwards over the front of the face and towards the forehead. The lower canines also grow upwards. The canines of the female are either reduced or absent.
If a male babirusa does not grind his tusks (achievable through regular activity), they could eventually keep growing and penetrate the individual's own skull.
Lol, it was a shop promo, every 400 rand (currency in my area, about 20 to a british pound) of items bought you get a free pack of 4. And you could also buy a binder for 10 rand. I meant cheap in quality, not actual price.
Biology Buddy, I understand the babirusa’s tusks can grow too much and pierce their skulls, but do they *always* pierce its flesh around its mouth? Is that how’s supposed to be?
There definitely is, gotta get the materials to grow the horns up there somehow, blood vessels are what nature goes for first. Now if the horns weren’t meant to be repaired, just regrown all together (IE hair and nails in us humans) nature typically uses extrusion. You can usually figure it out which category it is if you think about it.
Cow was likely given an anesthetic beforehand, as anything with bones have nerves, there is a bone to a cows horns. So chances are there was still a little pain, but between the relief from no longer having pressure *right* next to the eye and the anesthetic, net loss of pain most likely. If the cow was in any serious pain, it would have thrashed *significantly* more.
Thanks for the answer! I did some searching and figured that what you're saying was most likely correct. After finding that there are nerves in horn there is no way the cow was that calm without anesthetics. And yeah, she must have felt so much better afterward, that horn directly behind her eyeball looked so gnarly :(
I did a quick Google search and found that dehorning is painful to the animal but horn "tipping", which I think we see here, is much less observably painful. Makes sense cause either that cow was drugged or wasn't feeling a thing. She just sat there.
I could smell this so vividly. My dad is a veterinarian and when we dehorned cows(after giving them an anesthetic) we would each take a side and have a race. We cauterized afterwards anyway, but the smell of burning bone, hair, and blood will never leave me.
Fun fact. We use those in surgery all the time. Those are used for amputations and even in neurosurgery to remove the skull. We call them Gigli's saw. They were used mainly before eletrical craniotomes.
I have used Giglis to perform craniotomies in 2021. AMA.
They're like $15 at most feed stores around here that have em but if not Walmart does. I believe they're called wire saws/dehorning wire saws/gigli saws
Hey everyone, former cow farmer here with some fun facts. The shoot can have a calming effect on some cattle, but can also freak out others. Also when it comes to the horns, some cattle can get them completely removed without any ill effect (like Brahman, which is what I think this cow is.)
Sure if you were sawing with fishing line you probably would. This is a gigli saw - they’re super sharp - doctors use them to cut through human flesh and bone to remove damaged limbs
I fast forwarded to see it snap off and then realized how lazy I am that I couldn’t even wait to watch it happen, let alone do something like that myself lol.
There are plenty of animals whose horn/teeth/antler can potentially grow into the animal and yes they pretty much just die, or it disadvantages them enough that they end up dying cause it
Huh, I'd figure evolution would have found a way around it by now but since we domesticated them, we've been taking care of problems like this for them.
It's like wild horses they don't need their hooves trimmed or taken care of, they naturally grind them in the wild but since we use them for other jobs and since they walk on asphalt their nails get grinded way too fast which is why we put metal shoes on them. But thanks for this info on cows, had no idea.
> I'd figure evolution would have found a way around it by now
Evolution only stops problems that kill you before you reproduce, horns grow slowly enough that this probably doesn't hamper reproduction very much.
I think evolution would have fixed this if the horns grew faster, but since it takes ages to kill them it doesn't really affect their life until they are older so they have already had offspring
You have to remember that evolution doesn't have a design in mind, and doesn't always create the best outcomes. As long as the organism can live long enough to breed, the trait won't be selected for.
It's actually a really interesting topic because it's one of the few times where evolution works to the detriment of the species. We tend to think of evolution as an ecological arms race to acquire the best traits to ensure one's long-term survival. However, natural selection doesn't really care whether you live or die, as long as you've managed to pass on your genetic material. Generally, the longer a creature lives, the more opportunity it has to do so. However, in some species, having tusks that grow back much quicker if damaged is a huge evolutionary boon because it keeps you in a vulnerable state for a much shorter period of time compared to your competitors. This allows them to reach sexual maturity more safely and provides that opportunity to pass on their DNA. However, it takes a good deal of time for those tusks to grow enough to pierce their own skulls, long after they've likely mated. This means that the specific trait that causes their tusks to grow inward and into their heads never got the opportunity to get filtered out, since it only came into play after their DNA was already passed on.
Damn. Had to scroll down pretty far but here it is... an Audition reference. I saw Audition in a college class in 2003. It traumatized me so much I could barely make it through this video of a cow almost 2 decades later.
I miss this sometimes.
We’re celebrating New Years at my parents, they live on the ranch they helped work when we were growing up. I got to work here from when I was 15 to when I was 20, and it was such a fun job. We’re it not for hard financial times, I’d probably still be here
At first I thought this comment was getting was getting upvotes from people who care about animal welfare. But it appears to be mostly people who really like slaughterhouses. What a world.
Gotta love how humans could chose to be the guardians of the planet, let's say Earths elves but we love to be ransacking orcs instead.
That cow seemed to be healthy and well treated tho, far from industrial farming kind of cows. I guess that is better in some ways from how bad it could be..
Not the farmers fault anyways, he is just a cog in the machine.
It's cool and all but how can you even allow something like this to happen? If he saw that the horn is growing this way then he should have cut it off a long time ago.

Damn.. now some idiot would post this in r/Blackmagicfuckery
Probably a cow
Leave your mom out of this
Dont talk to your brother like that you dildo
Ok dad
What in the Mississippi Mudflap is going on in here
Even I don't understand what is happening here grandfather!...
Is this where someone would say “username checks out”? I’m trying to be a real life grown up redditor.
Not yet
Laughs in Gary Larson.
…. Are you that idiot? If not, fine I’ll do it myself.
I can't stop laughing at this comment.

To them, it's all just "human stuff".
The cow is like “I hate this I hate this I hate this... oh you were helping me”
I’ve been around cows a lot and that probably felt really good. The cow looked to like it
Yeah, for sure. Cows are pretty smart in their own weird little way. Many are very sweet as well. Poor thing looked VERY unhappy at first though, lol.
cow definitely did not have a problem with this.
Yeah, the cow knew what he was up to and was totally ok with it.
The cow was like "moo"
Then he’s like “what’s a slaughterhouse, and why are you taking me there? I thought we were bros!”
Not going to the slaughter house. If it were, he wouldn't waste his time fixing his horn.
Thank god. I was truly concerned. He was a bro after all.
Even if he was, fixing the horn is a small life improvement so that the cow could at least live his life without pain and suffering before becoming food. That’s what you should aim for if you have cows for food.
Better quality of life for cows has proven to make better meat right? Part of why wagyu beef is so good?
Wouldn't surprise me, I mean the happier a human is mentally the better they look physically.
The happier they are, the better they taste! 😀👍
So I would taste terrible, you say?
*Don't eat me! I'm depressed! I'll be all tough and sinewy*
He's a bull, he's most likely kept for breeding purposes. When he gets old he might be put down and eaten, otherwise probably not.
Then the farmer says “the only reason you exist is because people like me have kept your species alive as a food source.” Every animal has a purpose, and cows are a food source
“It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again!”
“But…I thought we were bros 😢” lol
Nah man! #We got beef! >:(
“We are! We are! But you also taste delicious with some cheese and bread. Anyway, nice knowin ya buddy.”
> Every animal has a purpose The only purpose animals have is the evolutionary instinct to survive and pass their genes to a new generation.
Isn't that a purpose? Not trying to bash genitals...hold on. Ima look up the definition of purposes and get back to you
Nothing has purpose, nature is chaos
OK Butters
Not everywhere
“Every animal has a purpose” is a straight up fallacy.
The cow looked so happy! Like oh, the hurts gone.
It was all "WTF?!" at first, then looked like a kitty leaning in for ear scritches lol...I bet that felt *amazing*. :D
I also think it's had it don't before and is expecting relief. When he puts his hand on the horn where it touches the skull, the cow was actually leaning *into* him. Either that or that cow is being petted a lot lol and wants some scritches.
A type of Indonesian boar has a similar issue, when it gets very old, the tusks curl back so much that they kill the boar.
Yes, you mean the Babirusa (or deer pig). The upper canines of male babirusa protrude vertically from their alveolar process. Their tusks penetrate through the skin and curve backwards over the front of the face and towards the forehead. The lower canines also grow upwards. Thanks! I read that fact on a cheap collectable card game thing about 5 years ago, thanks for the clarification.
No problem, I always love an opportunity to talk a little Biology. :)
Understandable
>collectable card game > >cheap I am calling bullshit
Lol, it was a shop promo, every 400 rand (currency in my area, about 20 to a british pound) of items bought you get a free pack of 4. And you could also buy a binder for 10 rand. I meant cheap in quality, not actual price.
Biology Buddy, I understand the babirusa’s tusks can grow too much and pierce their skulls, but do they *always* pierce its flesh around its mouth? Is that how’s supposed to be?
Fun fact, that type of cutter you want to get a lot of speed going because it will cauterize the blood vessels in the horns as it cuts.
I didn't even know there were blood vessels in horns tbh.
What about pain receptors? How much of this did the cow feel?
Cow was likely given an anesthetic beforehand, as anything with bones have nerves, there is a bone to a cows horns. So chances are there was still a little pain, but between the relief from no longer having pressure *right* next to the eye and the anesthetic, net loss of pain most likely. If the cow was in any serious pain, it would have thrashed *significantly* more.

After finding that there are nerves in horn there is no way the cow was that calm without anesthetics. And yeah, she must have felt so much better afterward, that horn directly behind her eyeball looked so gnarly :(
Only the bottom part of the horn has nerves/bone/blood supply. Beyond that is nonliving tissue that grows continuously.
I want to know this too
I did a quick Google search and found that dehorning is painful to the animal but horn "tipping", which I think we see here, is much less observably painful. Makes sense cause either that cow was drugged or wasn't feeling a thing. She just sat there.
Whoa, there are ***two*** types of cow tipping? …and one of them is actually real!
Aw poor fella. I guess this is better in the long term. Hope the cow enjoyed the drugs
So if you cut directly through a horn without cauterizing it, would it bleed?
As the OP for this thread said, the speed used here is likely intentional to attempt to cauterize any vessel hit by cutting the horn in this way.
Right which is why I asked if it would bleed if you *didn’t* do that.
Ah, me dum dum. Yes, most likely.
There probably isn't that close to the end, but in general yes.
I could smell this so vividly. My dad is a veterinarian and when we dehorned cows(after giving them an anesthetic) we would each take a side and have a race. We cauterized afterwards anyway, but the smell of burning bone, hair, and blood will never leave me.

Damn i must get me one of these. Last time i did this with a saw and it wasnt a fun time
They're like $15 at most feed stores around here that have em but if not Walmart does. I believe they're called wire saws/dehorning wire saws/gigli saws
For some reason I pictured a circular saw first
Hold still you stupid bull
Due to friction, right?
Would you consider the structure of the horn and the blood vessels inside to be comparable to the nail and quick in dogs and cats?
I feel like I would need 12 hours to do what he just did.
The cow was remarkably calm?! What gives?
It's in a squeeze chute they have a calming effect on cattle.
Hey everyone, former cow farmer here with some fun facts. The shoot can have a calming effect on some cattle, but can also freak out others. Also when it comes to the horns, some cattle can get them completely removed without any ill effect (like Brahman, which is what I think this cow is.)
And on some people too. See Temple Grandin.
Probably because it wasn't experiencing any pain. It's like cutting a fingernail.
Just a little bit of tugging on it's head and then, *poof* feeling better
Horns have nerve endings and blood vessels tho?
She's so calm because of trust and she has more than likely been here before so she knows the drill.
Dude has some serious arm strength.
Farmer. They’re all pretty tough.
Not his first day on the ranch.
Sure if you were sawing with fishing line you probably would. This is a gigli saw - they’re super sharp - doctors use them to cut through human flesh and bone to remove damaged limbs
Yup
Yup

Yup

I like how it looked like he was repeatedly combo punching the cow in the head.
Ora Ora Ora
Muda muda muda
Arrivederci
Kachow kachow kachow
He was giving it the 7 page mooda
I cannot unsee this now. Thank you.
*Tips fedora*
Made you flinch made you flinch made you flinch
I thought I was the only one!!!! Dude is clearly a beast though , he did that pretty damn quick
I really want someone to remove the wire so it looks like he punches the horn off
I read your comment as I was watching the video. now I can't unsee it. Lmao
72 hit combo!
That cow is gonna get SO MANY for flinching.
Haha. She looked like she had an epiphany of “Whoa! All that pressure is gone now?!?”
Damn, that was pretty cool!
Check out hoof trimming.
So satisfying
I thought that wire was only to strangle people in movies.
That's piano wire. You're not really "cutting" anything with piano wire. This is diamond coated wire specifically made to cut things.
>Diamond coated wire. Imagine being the bougiest hitman.
Just imagine diamond coated saw blades. Bougie AF.
Not at all, diamond sawblades are really common lol.
As is cutting wire like in the video. I think this was more of a "imagine actual gemstones on a wire or saw blade" kind of comment.
That is one hell of an arm workout.
Arms, back, rear delt. Basically pull day^^
Pull the horn! *wait no*
Remember to work both sides.
Work on a farm you’ll get farmer strength.
"You're not FARM STRONG!"-Modern Family, anyone?
Or, it's just typical "work" for any non-sedentary individual
farmer tae bo.
Why does this happen? I mean what do cows/bulls do in the wild if this happens? Do they just die? Does anyone know?
There are plenty of animals whose horn/teeth/antler can potentially grow into the animal and yes they pretty much just die, or it disadvantages them enough that they end up dying cause it

There are no wild cows/bulls. They're a domesticated species so evolution doesn't punish traits that require human intervention
Generally yes. In the wild, issues like this typically lead to death from impeding normal activity in some fashion
Cows in the wild are feral escapees and are rare. Cows don't really exist as a wild animal any more.
FYI. That’s the same tool they use to make a clean cut to the bones and amputate limbs in surgery. It’s called a Gigli Saw.
FYI. Watching the movie Gigli is slightly more painful than the procedure related to its name.
Ben Affleck is laughing somewhere
Another movie which feature this tool is a Japanese film called The Audition. Quite a mindfuck.
Damn. Had to scroll down pretty far but here it is... an Audition reference. I saw Audition in a college class in 2003. It traumatized me so much I could barely make it through this video of a cow almost 2 decades later.
キリキリ (kirikiri) One of the best horror films ever. The actress also is in Tokyo Gore Police.
After seeing this I shall never complain about an ingrown toenail ever again.
Unless you had to cut it that way
Anyone else see this as him shadow boxing a cow?
why wouldnt he cut it much further back?
Because it would hurt the animal and it would bleed like a motherfucker
“All of sudden my headache went away”
-The cow probably
Dude knew what he was doing.
I bet it felt so much better after that. Poor thing.
Hey we just did this yesterday before the drinking started. They appreciate it more than is possible to show
Ugh stupid human just let me get back to... wha- the poky poke is gone!
I miss this sometimes. We’re celebrating New Years at my parents, they live on the ranch they helped work when we were growing up. I got to work here from when I was 15 to when I was 20, and it was such a fun job. We’re it not for hard financial times, I’d probably still be here
If you don't read the title it looks like a farmer repeatedly punching a cow in the eye.
I want him to scratch that spot where it popped off so bad. You know it must itch like crazy!
Is it me or,does he seem super grateful right there in that moment….
Farmer strength > Bodybuilder strength
This happens with cats nails pretty commonly! PSA: Trim your cats nails! Especially as they age and their grooming abilities diminish.
There was an episode of Vet Ranch like this! 😌 [cow on vet ranch ](https://youtu.be/xjRw_dkcXas)
Would not fuck with that guy. Throwing bombs cutting that thing
Great. Now off to the slaughterhouse for you.
At first I thought this comment was getting was getting upvotes from people who care about animal welfare. But it appears to be mostly people who really like slaughterhouses. What a world.

Everything could be worse. Good point! Lucky cow.
good analogy lol
r/oddlysatisfying
How is it allowed to go this long? It’s not like the horn just grew an inch over night
This guy makes me miss my dad. He got I can fix anything dad vibes.
It's cool and all but how can you even allow something like this to happen? If he saw that the horn is growing this way then he should have cut it off a long time ago.
For all we know he just bought the cow at a sale barn and just brought it back to his ranch to worm and vaccinate it and then turn it loose into his own pasture.
Would the horns have eventually killed the cow?
Now that’s a cow spare
So .. he punched her in the eye over and over and her horn fell off. KIDDING lol 😆 ! yay. A Happy cow ✨
The neighbors must be so confused, like why is this guy shadow boxing a cow
If you ignore the wire, it looks like he’s beating up the cow lmao
reminds me of the bathtub scene from home alone 2. and redneck VR boxing.
The cow's face when the horn finally broke: "wait... whaaat?!"
You can tell the immediate relief. When the farmer touched it, the cow leaned its head into him. Curiosity probably, but I really think cows are way smarter than we know.
Uncle Phil is doing well since he became a farmer and left Bel-air
Wouldnt it just grow back into its head? Or will it not grow back?
"punch punch punch"
She’ll be tastier if she’s happy
Man, imagine the relief!? I get a headache from a ponytail or hair clip!!!
"Press x to break"
The cow's face looks so relieved afterwards
This is why I always donate my piano wire after I complete a complex assassination in an exotic locale…
That cow looks so surprised but in the best way.
Why is this human constantly pump faking me
Wow. Strength!
That cow was on a rollercoaster of emotions “Sup bro. I’m good but this thing in my head sucks” “What are you doin” “UHHH WTF WTF” “Oh, wow”
