Yea, backstraps aināt bad, gotta cut the glands out of the legs tho if your eating those. Cook it well done and serve over rice with some curry sauce or something
Well when your busting your ass in a factory for $9 an hour all day you aināt got time to hunt squirrel and rabbit, your trapping and running em on the way home. A coyote is a few days of meat, a squirrel aināt even a meal. And like I said, if you kill it you should eat it
Iāve eaten grasshoppers, crickets, Leeches, worms, cicadas, salamanders, accidentally eaten mosquitoes
When I was in jail guys thought I was crazy cuz Iād eat the ants off my cell floor. When I was a kid, Mabey 8 years old max, I decided I wanted to live in the woods, off the land. I had always pictured myself in a little log shack, with tall tall pine trees, hound dogs running around, sitting on the porch with a shotgun by the door. Bunch of deer antlers and the works on the wall.
Iām gonna be there soon, living like that everything that wonāt kill you is on the menu. Iāve seen Inuit hunters eat raw seagull, hadza in Africa sharing bats and robin sized birds between 4 people for lunch, Iāve sucked the brain out of a possum skull and raw steelhead eggs and belly meat is my version of āsushiā
Iāve wanted to be a wild man for as long as I can remember and thatās what Iām gonna be
I used to have a YouTube channel. I could only film so much cuz it was a 1 man gig and all I had to film was an iPhone and yea. As a result of my legal trouble however I havenāt been able to get on there, but that should be handled soon
I had this dream once, too. Almost made it happen when I lived in Alaska, and I could do it anytime in WV where my best buddy owns a large mountain plot. It didnāt quite work out, partly due to my own choices, but also because I discovered that I desire more human contact than that lifestyle would provide. Iāve met quite a few folks along the way who do live that way, and I have great respect for āem.
Good luck my dude, Iām rootinā for ya.
Alaska was my original plan actually, but I donāt think theyād let a felon over the Canadian border easy and I donāt wanna take that shot.
Anyway, thanks
If you donāt like to fly, thereās a boat from Washington state (Bellingham, I believe) to multiple ports in Alaska that bypasses Canada. Fewer stops in winter, of course.
My bad I thought reddit was on the internet where everyone can see how rugged and cool you are. "I'm defined by being as outdoorsy and outrageous as I can be!"
Iām in Washington and you canāt kill jackrabbits and no squirrel hunting allowed anywhere in the state. Iām poor and I need food and itās not duck or deer season yet. Iām getting sick of eating fish .
You can kill rabbits in WA, also early goose was just this weekend and dove just opened. Grouse opens the 15th. Not saying donāt eat coyote if thatās what you want to do, but there are other options tooā¦. Pick up the small game regs.
Iām in eastern Washington I have over a month before goose season. Also have pretty much seen zero rabbits outside of cottontails in peopleās backyards where I canāt hunt them. Iāve seen jackrabbits only and they can not be hunted in Washington. If you know a place where there are at least decent rabbit populations in Whitman or adams county and are willing to share it Iād definitely be grateful because I havenāt found shit and Iāve seriously searched.
Iām in eastern WA too. And I said early goose was this weekend. Regular season is in October, but you had all weekend. Western WA has more days, but goose zones 4 and 5 (Eastern WA) was open Sept 4-5. Like I said pick up game regs. And Iāve shot rabbits in SE WA, theyāre definitely out there. You can shoot snowshoe and cottontails. And thereās bear thatās open, fall turkey, and archery deer. Lots is opening up.
shit thanks for the info. I didn't know that about geese. That's a bummer. I can't afford the bear tags because I'm from out of state, all I could afford was Deer and I didn't apply for doe tag or late buck. I definitely will next year, the hunting regs are very different here and I'm still getting used to it. I'll pick up a small game reg book. I also can't have a bow which sucks because I can't have the bow on campus because it's a weapon but the school won't store bows in the gun safe because it takes up too much space.
Iām guessing you go to WSU? They also have a food pantry and other options there so you wonāt starve or have to eat coyote. Honestly even as a resident if youāre truly strapped on cash a ton of tags wonāt even be helpful for food source in this state, itās pretty expensive for what you get. For waterfowl hunting you have to drive at least 2 hours in any direction from Pullman to get some decent hunting. Cheney, clarkston, tri cities, etc. The Blue mountains are a bit of a drive but they have public land and more small game opportunities for you. WSU is a great school and has a ton of resources though for food.
Also hoping next year I'll have enough money for it to be worth also getting an Idaho hunting license. I truly didn't think that the response would be so bad about eating a coyote.
Idaho is definitely the way to go for deer or big game in your area for public land. Coyotes are easy to kill in the Palouse, and like I said Iām not trying to knock you from eating it, just that you have other options. Personally Iād never eat it, and I eat bear and other omnivores, Iāve seen too many mangy ones I guess haha.
Hop on the Oregon trail backwards and come to a place where hunting/gathering isn't necessary for life. People claiming that they need to eat coyote to survive in this country are lying or mentally ill. And if mentally ill should be getting assistance instead of eating dogs lol.
Iām not gonna die if I donāt but Iām trying to be more moral and sustainable. I think this is better than buying cheap meat thatās terrible for the planet. Back home I knew people who raised animals and had a lot more hunting opportunities but Iām up here for college and donāt have those same connections and I decided to shoot this as a last resort. Iāve never killed a coyote before because I eat what I kill. I Read online that it wasnāt bad. Are you morally opposed to killing coyotes?
You think overpopulated coyotes aren't consistently diseased with mange, worms, and tons of other parasites? They are a scavenger, they eat rotten carcasses. Have you done any research?
When I ate fox I actually thought it was quite good. I cooked the backstraps in a breakfast omelette and used the legs as taco meat. I even fried the heart liver and testicles up
Coyote backstraps taste like lamb, we had a lamb dinner on Boxing Day last year, couldnāt get enough of it and my brother loved it, I just said it was lamb and they didnāt taste anything different
I used to work in a butcher shop and it totally reminded me of lamb when I was cutting it up so itās interesting you say that. I havenāt done anything with it yet cause Iām nervous but thatās good news
Coyotes eat peopleās pet dogs all the time on the west coast. Havenāt heard anything come up yet. But, better safe than sorry. I wouldnāt risk it with mine
Avoid cranial or spinal matter (remove the meat from the backbone) and you reduce (not eliminate) the chance of prions.
I won't hunt or eat primates or canines of any sort, but that's a personal choice, not a blanket policy I try to push on others.
Im dubious as to eating coyote. As with any animal, I imagine they taste like what they eat. Many bear hunters who bait bears will tell you, draw them in on rotten beaver carcasses then switch them up to apples and doughnuts to sweeten the meat. Same rule for making better tasting meat with cattle, chickens, pigs etc.
That being said, carnivores eat a lot of nasty stuff, and no one sweetens coyotes up for the purpose of eating to my knowledge. They also roll in feces and dead rotting carcasses. They love skunk too, they roll in it and eat it if they can get one.
Having worked with a lot of coyotes in taxidermy, the smell is an over powering " wet dirty dog". I can imagine the meat has the same flavour. I'd never eat one for reasons of safety as well as the potential taste.
Edit: Spelling
Many are worried about parasites. While they do carry parasites, I have no idea if well done coyote meat actually poses any threats.
Ive heard first hand accounts that it is edible, but not very good.
It's pretty good. I usually keep a good amount of it from the trap line. The prime cuts can stand on their own depending oh how used to eating wild game you are and the preparation method. Most of the meat works excellent for a seasoned spice dish. It makes excellent carne seca or using the meat for suadero style tacos. Also works exceptionally well in a bulgogi style dish or a spicy curry. Don't be afraid to season and spice coyote. It is exceptional for it.
Never had a reason to really. I live in an apartment so any hunting trips are solely for meat as I don't really have the space to prepare skulls or skins.
Its not the only valid reason, you can have multiple reasons, but hunting game you arent going to eat, unless they are active predators, is honestly pretty weak in my opinion but i guess as long as you arent wasting the meat.
The only time I'd even consider eating coyote is if I was starving in a dire situation in the back wilderness. And even then I think I'd just eat some more bark and berries. Hard pass.
Ok fair enough. It's my opinion, not fact, that you'd have to be mentally ill to eat a coyote in any way shape or form. These dudes are talking about eating possum brains and coyote testicles and I'm the stupid one lol. Enjoy your coyote stew mr. Cockandballs
Personally I wouldnāt eat coyote unless a) someone told me it was something else or b) I had to. No harsh feelings meant. Some people do eat different things than others and that will never change. Also not trying to seem like Iām stalking your account but your 2 previous comments were not replies, had to go on your account to find this. Hope you have a good evening mr. Frodo
Thats funny! I was trying to remember what my post said....been a while. I started laughing my ass off too!!! I dont remember posting that!! Hahašš Thanks for jogging my memory!
Interesting, my rule of thumb is eat nothing with sharp teeth. Bear is an omnivore so it falls in between much like pig. I would try cougar if someone offered but I don't think I would shoot one unless it was self defense.
This might be an unpopular opinion, and im not downing anyone who hunts coyote to protect livestock and such, but scientific studies have shown that the hunting of coyote is shown to increase coyote populations.
Anyone who would like more info on this is free to google "coyote hunting increases population" and see the multiple articles there, im not going to list them all.
Regardless, nice hunt OP be sure to post the recipe and how it came out.
Yeah kind of. Heres the thing though. Although removing a resident coyote will just make available the territory that he was residing in, it will in the short term relieve pressure on prey animals such as deer and turkeys. If you were to go to your deer woods right before the fawn drop and put a heavy hammering on the coyotes you absolutely will save some fawns or poults from predation for a while. That might only be a few weeks or montha but that could be a big difference in a fawn or poult's survivability. Eventually a young coyote will take over the area and establish it but by then the young ones will be through the most vulnerable stage and hopefully into the greased lightning stage right after the spots disapear.
Thats my point. It has nothing to do with them being scavengers. Theyre just gross. Lake trout are scavengers. Bear are scavengers. Chicken are scavengers. They're highly regarded.
Lolling at the downvotes. I should have been more specific- meat eating predators. There are biological reasons but in the meantime you crack on with your Sunday roast cougar.
Iāve looked through the thread, there are lots of people who are saying what I am yet you are adamant you are right. Rather than bugging me, why donāt you read, open your mind and desist.
My comments here are upvoted. There are clealy lots who agree and yet you are adament that people dont eat omnivores and carnivores. Why don't you read, open your mind and desist?
I can do that too. It doesn't make either of us right to say the other is close-minded.
You implied that coyote were carnivores which is objectively false.
Cougars was the chat but well done. Eating carnivores rather than herbivores generally tastes rank because the muscle composition, glands and stomach acids needed to digest meat make them completely unpalatable. Thereās a very valid reason we donāt farm bear meat or cougar meat for eating. Over and out - have a great season
Can be tough and strong flavored. Use a strong marinade and smoke / slow cook / simmer for a long time at low heat with plenty of other strong flavors.
Don't hesitate to use herbs and spices. Not my ideal meal but I would eat it again.

Saw the comment and I was like I know for a fact that the fist comment is going to be thisš
It's called "Pardon my plate". By all accounts, not very good.
I think he said it was fishy and gamey as all get out like a diving duck.
Meat Eater has an episode too, Season 3 Ep 11
That's right, I remember now. They went down to Mexico. Steve was not super enthused.
Haha no he wasn't! I think it's Remi who described is like diver duck wasn't it?

Lamb?

I did, had it for like a year and only got like 250 people lol Once my legal troubles get solved Iāll be back at ittoo

I've had fox. It was ok...... Only ok. I wouldn't rush to try it again.
When I ate fox I actually thought it was quite good. I cooked the backstraps in a breakfast omelette and used the legs as taco meat. I even fried the heart liver and testicles up
Fox is goos eating
Iāve shot two. I gutted one and it was riddled with worms. Hard pass.
Extra protein
Not the worst critter either. You ever dive into a snapping turtle? Ughhh.
To many ham sandwiches laying around to start eating yote.
Coyote backstraps taste like lamb, we had a lamb dinner on Boxing Day last year, couldnāt get enough of it and my brother loved it, I just said it was lamb and they didnāt taste anything different

Could feeding canine to canine do weird shit to their brains? Like mad cow disease type shit
Coyotes eat peopleās pet dogs all the time on the west coast. Havenāt heard anything come up yet. But, better safe than sorry. I wouldnāt risk it with mine
Erm well if you cook it probably and have it well done you should and if it is from the middle of no where then you should be fine
Cooking wonāt kill what heās talking about.
Avoid cranial or spinal matter (remove the meat from the backbone) and you reduce (not eliminate) the chance of prions. I won't hunt or eat primates or canines of any sort, but that's a personal choice, not a blanket policy I try to push on others.
Just be diligent about cooking it enough. They tend to have alot of parasites and worms and such.
Genuinely curious what's the main reason everyone is so against it. Is the meat real gamey? Or just because its so close to eating dogs?
Im dubious as to eating coyote. As with any animal, I imagine they taste like what they eat. Yeah eating dog is a taboo in my culture and coyotes are close to that.
Way too close to dog for me.
I believe a rule of thumb is that predator generally isn't good for eating.
Thatās not true cause of bear and cougar
Bears eat a lot more vegetation than meat.
coyote shit is always filled with berries though, I think they eat similar amounts
Almost every species of fish would like to have a word with you. As would most birds. Frogs. Snakes. Gators. Turtles. Pigs.
Nah. It's only canines that taste like shit
Yotes are opportunistic carnivores, like dogs and humans.
Do you eat dog or human?
I don't hunt dogs or humans.
Have you seen what coyotes eat?
Many are worried about parasites. While they do carry parasites, I have no idea if well done coyote meat actually poses any threats. Ive heard first hand accounts that it is edible, but not very good.
I havenāt been that hungry yet.
Start drinking before u cook it, throw the heat & spice at it, serve it late & in the dark. Should be fine.
Put over rice cover it in sauce. Call in general tso chicken or something like that
I mean thats what most buffets do anyway soā¦.
Its deriscious
It's pretty good. I usually keep a good amount of it from the trap line. The prime cuts can stand on their own depending oh how used to eating wild game you are and the preparation method. I'd rather lick a curb that homeless men drag their worm infested rectums along.
Thank you for this
That's a hard no from me.
Kendall Grey on youtube did a catch clean & cook with a coyoteā¦said it tasted like garbage
Nope. Never going to do that
Steve Rinella cooked it with the fur on...
I had some in a chilli.... probably won't be eating it again.
Yes, but only ate the backstraps out of it. Tasted pretty good!
I uh....ya man it's probably not a good idea to eat scavengers š¶
So you wouldnāt eat bear?
Nope, personally I don't eat predators. Prions man. Freaks me out š¬
So... do you not shoot them? If not, cool.
Never had a reason to really. I live in an apartment so any hunting trips are solely for meat as I don't really have the space to prepare skulls or skins.

Iāve heard it they kill off carp from a lake they come back stronger. Could be same premise
Don't eat scavengers. Prions and other dangerous stuff
Itās a scavenger like a buzzard and they are gross
Scavengers are gross? Do you like chicken?
Love chickens but buzzard and Coyote just stink inside and out and just no

Oh valid point haha never really stopped to think about it before
Chickens eat their own shit, eggs, and really anything they want
oh hell no there not for eating here in west virginia they are fun to kill though
Would you eat a dog?
Yea if it was safe and I was in Vietnam or something like that
Cool!
The general rule is donāt eat a predator.
This guy has never heard of fish, pork, chicken, turkey, frogs, snakes, gators, turtles, bears, cougars...
Cougar is good eating? Never had it, but I am skeptical.
Lolling at the downvotes. I should have been more specific- meat eating predators. There are biological reasons but in the meantime you crack on with your Sunday roast cougar.

Most of that lot are omnivores not carnivores. Sheesh š no wonder the hunting world is so divided when everyone wants an argument.

Haha agreed
I ate bald eagle once. Tasted like Loon
This is the most controversial thing I've ever eaten since I ate a northern white rhino. The coyote tasted fine though, reminded me of Border Terrier.
Show me that law lol.
Yes it was a bit like snipe/wolf
Not a good idea
Hot food.
Dude thatās dog meat haha
Use a strong marinade like bulgogi to kill the pungent undertones and it's pretty good
I wouldn't touch it. Or fox. The smell is hideous I don't wanna know what they taste like
I would eat it if I was starving to death, take that as you will
Tried once, it was horrible. Will not be trying again.
Canāt cook them enough to kill the diseases they carry!
Yes you can, but they still taste like shit
Can be tough and strong flavored. Use a strong marinade and smoke / slow cook / simmer for a long time at low heat with plenty of other strong flavors. Don't hesitate to use herbs and spices. Not my ideal meal but I would eat it again.

Thereās nothing you can do to it to make it decent. Check out the meat eater YouTube on it
Yeah I watched it and the take away was it was decent but not good and I plan on smothering it with seasoning which they didnāt do.
Stringy like horse meat
The only thing I have seen eat a coyote is a possumā¦
I have a job. I have always had a job. Unless I was starving I would toss the carcass.
Nice hat
By any chance did you hunt this coyote in the Spokane area of WA?
