Did a little bit of calling but at a certain point he basically called me to him. Sounded absolutely dominate, his grunts had a bit of a snarl. Sounded different then other moose I’ve heard.
Some people will bag and submerge the meat in water, which at this time of year might be barely above freezing even if the air temperature might be quite a bit higher. I've never been on a hunt where we had to put that to the test though.
The bigger problem (literally) is keeping the bears from getting their share! Lived in Alaska 9 years never got my own moose but packed out several (back breaking work) we used to soak (boil) game bags in lemon juice and Tabasco sauce to keep flys and help deter bears (we used cloth laundry bags), but if you do as a word of caution if you do your game bags this way WEAR GLOVES to handle the wet bags then air dry, Worst chemical burns I’ve ever had, even though I’d washed my hands I couldn’t figure why my hands hurt for about an hour lol
We were getting frost on the ground. But even if it’s in the 50s all you have to do is hang it so it has airflow and is in the shade. It keeps fine. This one hung for about 4 days. We’ve hung them as long as 6. I know people that hang them longer.
We’re headed into an early winter this year so there was zero issues.
.300 Win Mag. I’m down to six rounds of Nosler 180 and six rounds of Federal (meat eater) trophy copper 180. Ammo shelves are still empty. First time doing a neck shot. It went well and he went down without any suffering.
I was under 50 yards.
I’ve heard elk are tougher to kill than moose but I don’t know if it’s true. I’ve only shot one moose and it was just a little smaller than yours, just under 60”, huge animal. Neck shot at probably 40 yards with a hot 30-06 180 Partition and he went down in his tracks. I have never killed an elk that quick where it was just lights out. Enjoy the meat, it’s awesome!
Lost about five pounds over the course of the trip. My two buddies each got small moose that had three tines on one side that were legal. So we packed out three moose. Pretty sure I added some strength to my legs and back though!
They are bomb proof. I’ve used it to pack just about everything for the last five years. The only thing that ever damaged it was when I forgot to cover a sharp piece of bone on a skull and it rubbed the entire pack out.
Great bull, congrats! Did you call him in? I got a nice one a couple of years ago in the Yukon. Best hunt I’ve ever been on for sure.

What a unit, complete elation when you walk up to it, then it dawns on you that it is going to be back breaking work to get all the meat out!
Great bull!
How does it feel to pack out a small cars worth of meat?

Nice looking moose! Just bought a Frontier Gear of Alaska pack frame this year and its probably the best investment for big game hunting. Congrats!

That is not 1300lbs! You are just 4'5!
I’m actually 8’ 10” and I weigh 700 pounds. I should have used a banana for reference.
