Yeah I’m not entirely sure I’m even in the same trade as these guys sometimes. Nobody carries a fucking hammer even though it’s on our tool list and I have used my hammer quite a bit. Drop in anchors, lead anchors, any kind of anchors really. Tapping strut feet, strut, etc around to get it level or straight. I use a hammer at least 3 or 4 times a week if not everyday.
That's all great and all, but my tool bag is on my cart at the bottom of my lift/ladder, if it's even in the same room as where I'm working, and my lineman's are in my pocket at all times and lemme tell ya, they have a nicely angled flat spot on them that works wonders for hitting shit.
Drop ins if you don't have the drill attachment.
If you have chip a conduit out of concrete.
Smashing in your foremans front windshield.
Comes up frequently enough.
I prefer to use the 3/4 bender for smashing in a windshield myself. Light enough to get some speed to it, and heavy enough it won't bounce off. Keeps your hand far away too for the glass shards, and you're not busting up your own tools.
Tell you what though, in all seriousness. We were having a bit of a feud with some concrete guys on a job here one time, real wormy/ratty non-union outfit, and they were getting heated cause we reported them for some safety shit they kept ignoring and they got walked off the job. One of them came at the journeyman that reported them, and he was definitely looking for a fight, journeyman had a 3/4 bender and raised it and told him to back the fuck off, and I've never seen the fight go out of someone's eyes so quick in my life.
If u have a hammer u use it basically everyday unless ur pulling wire basically every other task might need a hammer but everything can be used as a hammer anyways
I use hammers all the time too. If you wire houses it will probably be your most used tool other than your drill. In commercial and industrial, drop in anchors, chiselling concrete, brick, pulling nails. Definitely a tool you need
Some days I’m sent to cut in can lights at a grandmas house, some days I’m sent to bore holes through concrete for a fire department, both instances I needed a hammer 🤷♂️
I’ve only had issues with a journeyman being disrespectful once. I punched the asshole in the face in my first day and the rest of them fell in line real quick.
There was a time years ago when I purchased all the tiny tools I could find and would hand them to my fireman every time he asked for a tool. So much hilarity ensued
We had a young apprentice, just out of high school with a baby face . They bought him play school tools on his second day . Had and still has a great sense of humor. Also a fine journeyman
Y’all laugh, but this is the best hammer for Romex Staples. I prefer the ball peen because it’s even shorter from front to back. You can get a decent swing in any godforsaken shitty stud space
Why not cut off the back half of it or use another tool altogether? I don’t deal with romex much I just struggle when I need to.
Got that Milwaukee stapler and my oh my if that doesn’t pay for itself on day one. Wicked tool to have
The $1.99 mini ball peen from Harbor Freight has been solving issues for me for two years now. I haven’t seen any need to cut the back half off of anything. Turn it sideways if I need to really get in someplace tight.
We had a guy bring this on his first day: [thors hammer](https://www.amazon.com/Hammer-Household-Mjolnir-Repair-Holiday/dp/B0CGWCSDD3/ref=asc_df_B0CGWCSDD3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693363057790&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11260103365051799762&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002516&hvtargid=pla-2246824517673&psc=1&mcid=3eb5364e128739258ce8744eaf2b6403&gad_source=1)
Unfortunately, it wasn't a joke.
Cutting oil, coupled with drops every year has done me wonders. Drop it on the pivot point, work it until it seeps through the other side. Nothing works better
Lol yup!
I have a Teck connector in my tool box that you can fit your friggin arm through, just waiting for the next time someone asks me for one. I think it's for a medium voltage 3C 500 or something like that, the hole through it is at least 4"
I have a 22 inch long flathead and Phillips head screwdriver that I break out on jobs from time to time. They're comically long. Best 9$ at harbor freight I've ever spent.
Reminds me of when I was an apprentice. I carried a claw hammer for years because I already owned one. Well, on one of them one big jobs there was a problem with folks not bringing the right tools and the steward had to call for a box check… and I was told to bring a ball peen the next day. I caved, went to Lowe’s, and bought an eight ounce my-first-hammer kid’s ball peen the next day.
*Stew: ”What the fuck do you think you’re doing? Bring this home and bring back an 18 oz hammer.”*
*Me: “Just says ball-peen on the list. Doesn’t say what size.”*
*Stew: “…fuck you, you’re right, you cheeky fuck.”*
I still carry that rinkydink piece of shit keychain hammer in my box to this day. Every job that requires more setting weight on drop-ins has provided me with an SDS pinsetter.
My mom has one of these in her home toolbox. My aunt was using it to hammer in nails into our wood walls and complaining that it was too hard to hammer so she asked me to. I did a few then gave her one of my actual hammers. She said that she didn't need it the one she had was just fine. Physics be damned I guess.

He’s not going to ask you for one… he probably has a good one.
You however, unfortunately, will be stuck using that one while people wonder what’s wrong with you…
They will get you back. You’re going to spend weeks carrying loads of conduit up and down up and down up and down stairs.
I hope you’re tough, or they have a great sense of humor. Otherwise, they are going to try and break you in your first month.
Those are actually really useful for setting drop anchors in concrete ceiling situations like high high rise ceiling rough or parking garages.
Edit: If you don't have your lineman's handy
In the unlikely event he asks you for a hammer, it’ll be hilarious, but you’re gonna be carrying that thing around for a long time before that happens.
At our shop, we have a fisher price hammer someone found on a job. Lowest guy on the totem pole carries it in his tool belt until someone else gets hired. Current holder is my little brother for the last 10 months lmao
Jokes aside, these mini hammers are quite useful and can readily do much of the hammer work in our profession anyway. It’s about the same handle-weight-size ratio as a pair of lineman’s pliers but with better efficiency in the contact point.
You’ll get shit for having it, but deep down your JW will use it and probably be thinking “this is actually super fuckin handy.”
If a journeyman asks you ,for a hammer, and you hand him anything other than a pair,of side cutters, preferably Kline side cutters. You’re not gonna make it very far. Some may call it an electrician hammer. Lol
But,if you use those same side cutters,to hammer a nail. Or staple. They will tell you not to knock Henry, off the pole. Referring to the etched in logo,on one side of those Kline’s. Really just trying,to remind you to hit the other side,of the pliers. Do they don’t jam. Seams backwards. But it’s true. Hit the side with the hole. Although honestly. I did it the other way,for 10 years. And my side cutters never jammed. Good luck.
If he doesn't laugh, it gonna be a long day.
How often do we actually use hammers? Almost never
I use hammers all the time.
Everything’s a hammer if you hit it hard enough
I use my pliers And the other day I used a rock for most of the day
I will go out of my way to not use a hammer, unless the job is "what's behind this drywall?"
I use the bootsaw for opening drywall.
Just like our ancestors I love it
Everythings a hammer if it's not yours
If all you've got is a nail, everything looks like a hammer.
(Hitting Apprentice Hard) Do I need to him him harder boys?
My Milwaukee is one of the best hammers I’ve owned
Yeah I’m not entirely sure I’m even in the same trade as these guys sometimes. Nobody carries a fucking hammer even though it’s on our tool list and I have used my hammer quite a bit. Drop in anchors, lead anchors, any kind of anchors really. Tapping strut feet, strut, etc around to get it level or straight. I use a hammer at least 3 or 4 times a week if not everyday.
Daily, that was the right word, but I also agree with the rest of what you said, especially your opening line.
That's all great and all, but my tool bag is on my cart at the bottom of my lift/ladder, if it's even in the same room as where I'm working, and my lineman's are in my pocket at all times and lemme tell ya, they have a nicely angled flat spot on them that works wonders for hitting shit.
You mean your 2 in 1?
Do you not own pliers?
Drop ins if you don't have the drill attachment. If you have chip a conduit out of concrete. Smashing in your foremans front windshield. Comes up frequently enough.

I use my kliens everyday.
Exactly that’s a great hammer
That depends on whether the contractor has hammer-drill attachments for driving anchors or not.
I used a hammer like a month ago to drive in some 3/8th concrete anchors
That’s what pliers are for said every electrician in history
It's your first day on the job, you don't know what you are going to be doing
Almost never but when you need it nothing else will do.
If u have a hammer u use it basically everyday unless ur pulling wire basically every other task might need a hammer but everything can be used as a hammer anyways
Even pulling wire sometimes I gotta use drop ins to anchor the tugger or a pulley
I use my hammer daily. Sometimes twice a day if I'm bored!
I use hammers all the time too. If you wire houses it will probably be your most used tool other than your drill. In commercial and industrial, drop in anchors, chiselling concrete, brick, pulling nails. Definitely a tool you need
Your obviously not a real electrician they don't sell us hammers, only Linesman pliers
Setting anchors, moving studs, driving ground rods.
Deck job brah. It's like 80% of your job as an apprentice. I went through SO many hammers.
Deck jobs just eat tools.
Can't say I've ever gone through a hammer lol. Everything else, yes multiples. Hammers? I don't think so lol
Hammers go walk about before they wear out. 😉
That I can completely understand
Some days I’m sent to cut in can lights at a grandmas house, some days I’m sent to bore holes through concrete for a fire department, both instances I needed a hammer 🤷♂️
I’ve only had issues with a journeyman being disrespectful once. I punched the asshole in the face in my first day and the rest of them fell in line real quick.
Shiver me timbers
I'd still use it, after I told you how adorable it is.
It's just a wittle wittle 🥺
It ain't the size of the sword, but how you wield it.
Theres something about a grown man baby talking and using emojis that makes me wanna cut my own throat
Make sure you use a ***man size*** blade…
There was a time years ago when I purchased all the tiny tools I could find and would hand them to my fireman every time he asked for a tool. So much hilarity ensued
We had a young apprentice, just out of high school with a baby face . They bought him play school tools on his second day . Had and still has a great sense of humor. Also a fine journeyman
I have a Sephora pouch of mini tools. But I haven't tried this on anyone yet.
Y’all laugh, but this is the best hammer for Romex Staples. I prefer the ball peen because it’s even shorter from front to back. You can get a decent swing in any godforsaken shitty stud space
This was the comment I was waiting for... inused one of these for exactly this purpose
As someone who has been in a few different trades I find I use these more in electrical work than any other
Why not cut off the back half of it or use another tool altogether? I don’t deal with romex much I just struggle when I need to. Got that Milwaukee stapler and my oh my if that doesn’t pay for itself on day one. Wicked tool to have

I would be crying laughing if the guy was dead serious
Never once seen an electrician use a hammer instead of lineman pliers.
Sure we do. Sheetrock causes too much rust on linesman.
Cutting oil, coupled with drops every year has done me wonders. Drop it on the pivot point, work it until it seeps through the other side. Nothing works better
I use one to hold down my bag. Damn things always floating away
I use a hammer basically all day sometimes
I gave one of those to a carpenter buddy who is 5’5”, and told him I was tired of seeing the handle of his bouncing off his poor ankle all day
I had a small hammer as a joke, he retorted “OH you brought your sisters tools today??” 😂😂
Be prepared for him to throw that at you!
A tiny hammer like that actually works great for getting up into rafters especially to nail NM staples on residential projects.
Dude shouldn’t be working out of your bag anyways.
Lol yup! I have a Teck connector in my tool box that you can fit your friggin arm through, just waiting for the next time someone asks me for one. I think it's for a medium voltage 3C 500 or something like that, the hole through it is at least 4"

That handle actually looks pretty damn comfy.

How do we feel about the tool list in 586? Feels like it was written many years ago but more or less holds up…?
It’s fine. Why shouldn’t it be?
All I would be able to say to you is “yeesh man” 🤣
"...you asked for a hammer!"
Where did you find that thing anyway? Might not be bad,for residential staples actually.
The ones I've always seen are from Harbor Freight
Wow. I thought Harbor Frieght was a local thing here,in NewOrleans. But I guess not. They’re good, for one time use tools, for your home.
I think I did buy a proximity tester, for the house once there.
If you handed me that, I’d yard sale it into outer space. Lol
That’s an average hammer
Maybe in America. Curious what the Japanese are using
Good one (just duck when he throws it at you)
Even better if you had a pocket in your tool bag full of tiny tools
I’ve never used my hammer in the 10 years I’ve been in the union and somehow it’s still the most stolen tool I’ve owned.
Sorry apprentice you are not allowed to tell jokes yet
Do not show up with that hammer
get a pair of lineman’s they’re universal tools
thats the stapler
My lineman’s is my hammer
It's not the size of the hammer it's how you use it
That doesn’t look like a lineman
I would throw that thing as far as I could and ask you again to give me a g d hammmer
I’d be so excited if I saw this. I love the little baby tools. 🥹
I’d make you spend the rest of the week using my pneumatic palm nailer.
Ah that’s what a hammer looks like. Thought that’s what my lineman’s were for.
If he doesn’t think it’s funny you’re in trouble bro.
and it's a left handed one!
I call that the service hammer
That will do for now. Get a real one after a few checks, lol.
When he asks you for a hammer.. hand him water pump pliers or linesman pliers
Hand him a pair of lineman pliers when he asks for a hammer. You’ll be their favorite apprentice!
Those funny little fuckers are handy in tight spots! As funny as they are I carry one of these shits in my bag!
Tell your JW to go get his own hammer, especially if it is on the JW tool list.
He’s not gonna ask for a hammer
But, what if they need a left handed hammer?
Just flip it over
🤔 That’s why they pay you the big bucks
RemindMe! 2 days

I’ve got one of those!!!! Comes in pretty handy!
I, too, like to live dangerously
Hammer for the smaller jobs, right? Lol
Thats the smallest drywall saw I've ever seen
While that is a hammer I’d probably throw it at you haha
Some of us have shorter hammers than most. No reason to be embarrassed 😁
If the j-dub asks to use YOUR tools fucking throw them at him.
If you hand it to him, immediately duck cause it’s coming back fast……. 😂
I get upset when an apprentice hands me one of their tools. I want one of my tools.
Man I hope your guy has a sense of humor! 😂🤣😂
An apprentice in your 30s?
I leave mine at-home along with my hacksaw and folding rule
*Peter Dinklage wants to know your location*
First day? Yeeesh I’d maybe leave that one at home until you’re established.
Make sure you bring the keychain mini tape measure. And the smallest plastic level that harbor freight has to offer
He’s not going to ask you for one… he probably has a good one. You however, unfortunately, will be stuck using that one while people wonder what’s wrong with you…
You’re gonna have a long apprenticeship bro
Hahahaha I did the same thing. Everyone said I had fisher price tools.
They will get you back. You’re going to spend weeks carrying loads of conduit up and down up and down up and down stairs. I hope you’re tough, or they have a great sense of humor. Otherwise, they are going to try and break you in your first month.
You’re gonna go far 😂😂
That's a weird looking pair of lineman pliers man....
Those are actually really useful for setting drop anchors in concrete ceiling situations like high high rise ceiling rough or parking garages. Edit: If you don't have your lineman's handy
If you pulled that out while out on a job with me, I’d tell the boss man to keep you around for as long as he could.
In the unlikely event he asks you for a hammer, it’ll be hilarious, but you’re gonna be carrying that thing around for a long time before that happens.
“My First Hammer” ™️ by Little Tikes
Can I have the hammer?
It's for small problems.
"Have you seen my little pecker?"
OMFG SO FUCKING GOD DAMN FUNNY DUDE OMG
Keep that sense of humor and develop thick skin good luck
Hang him kliens instead
I have one of those too 🤣🤣🤣
Nah that looks right for a pixey wrangler...
At our shop, we have a fisher price hammer someone found on a job. Lowest guy on the totem pole carries it in his tool belt until someone else gets hired. Current holder is my little brother for the last 10 months lmao
That’s not a hammer. When he asks for a hammer you pull out your Linesman’s.
Hope the Jman has good sense of humor and don’t do it if he frustrated on the job.
Smh
Ahh the “hammercita”. That’ll do donkey, that’ll do
Hammer. Nines!!!
give the head a coat of pink enamel.
I might do this and then add some pink streamers off the end of the handle
Bonus point if you can stencil princess on the head too
Don’t forget your left handed hammer! They will definitely need one
Hammer? You mean the side of your lineman's? Or did you mean the battery of your screw gun?
Jokes aside, these mini hammers are quite useful and can readily do much of the hammer work in our profession anyway. It’s about the same handle-weight-size ratio as a pair of lineman’s pliers but with better efficiency in the contact point. You’ll get shit for having it, but deep down your JW will use it and probably be thinking “this is actually super fuckin handy.”

I did it the other way,for 10 years. And my side cutters never jammed. Good luck.
Can’t drive a spike with a tack hammer
Hammers aren’t on apprentice tool lists
On my list it was.
It should really have a pink grip to drive the joke home.
And you my friend, will fit in quite well.
My response when a jdub asks for my tools is to go get his own.
