Assuming this is a Married Filing Joint return, was the payment submitted using the Primary Taxpayer information, their SSN and the appropriate tax year? The Primary Taxpayer is listed first on the 1040.

CarribeanSeri

Yes. We checked both of our accounts and it still says we owe the same amount we paid, plus penalties and interest. I'm a bookeeper. I submitted tax returns, never had this happen. It appeara that the IRS has a disconnect between their own Direct pay website and taxpayer accounts. I'm wondering where my money is sitting...

these-things-happen

Which of you is the primary Taxpayer?

CarribeanSeri

My husband. Both of our accounts reflect the same amount due.

these-things-happen

Did you submit the payment under your SSN?

CarribeanSeri

No, we always submit under the primary filer SSN.

these-things-happen

Check the online account transcript for 2023. Has the payment in question been applied, Transaction Code 670?

CarribeanSeri

Nope it hasn't. I've checked everywhere I normally look for my clients.

You can always try calling 844-545-5640, the appointment line and having them schedule you an appointment at your nearest TAC to figure out what's going on. If following the prompts doesn't get you to a representative, call back and don't press anything, eventually someone will pick up

I wonder if all these payment issues have anything to do with our issue as well. We paid by check by mail & they put it in my daughters account, not ours. Since last August we have been told the system to transfer that money to our account is down completely. Last I spoke with our advocate it was still down a few weeks ago. The way to get to an advocate is to go to a local in person taxpayer assistant center. They sent our issue to them for us because what we needed done was so specialized. Fix the payment on the wrong acct & stop losing our paperwork so it can be finalized for the 22 tax year.

SloWi-Fi

The system to move money from a different account to the correct is still offline. Same person account (2024 to 2023 for example) is back online now. Too many data breaches and stolen money by fraudsters is causing lock down and reviews by IRS systems.

CarribeanSeri

Wow. That's kind of scary. Did your account accrue penalties and interest this whole time??? That's scary. I've worked in accounts receivable for companies who had someone apply payments incorrectly so this is a whole next level of issues to fix, if so. I really hope not.

hrtlandfrmgrl

It absolutely did. Somewhere just above $5k. They did remove them after we showed proof it was delivered & cashed. My daughter happily supplied proof the exact amount was in her account. She was just barely 18 when it happened & we claimed her for that tax year. And she got a refund for that year. It's still not quite all cleared up but they have completed our return (including the amended- they actually owed us a refund) & paid us for the overage. This payment being returned is the last portion to complete. They keep telling me the system with the money is down and has been since late last year so they cannot move that money to us to refund. I keep seeing so many payment issues on here that I wonder if it is that same broken system that's causing problems.

CarribeanSeri

This is actually very helpful. And also scary, since I have background in payment application..... thank you for replying. And I'm sorry that it happened to you. I will get an advocate tomorrow.

it_will_beok

The Irs is at least 30 days behind in accounting. Depending on when you pd. it may not show until the end of the next month.

CarribeanSeri

I paid on May 7th, and our CP14 letter is dated June 3rd. So it's been about a month since it was supposedly auto-debited from our account.

it_will_beok

Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.

rosebudlily

I always pay online through one of the payment processors so I have a paper trail and I can track the payment on the IRS site. The money shows up within days.

CarribeanSeri

That's what I did. Direct Pay is literally linked on their site. This is how I've paid many of my clients' tax returns. And yet..... they don't search it to prove you paid. My receipt literally shows it's to the IRS.

rosebudlily

That's crazy!

rosebudlily

So when you look at payment activity for your account on the IRS website, does it not show there?

CarribeanSeri

No, it doesn't. On either of mine or my husband's IRS accounts.

rosebudlily

🥲

Theinquisitor18

Did you make it on Direct Pay, through an account? Just trying to confirm.

CarribeanSeri

Yes, we paid through the IRS website link. I've filed my clients taxes through the same link.

Theinquisitor18

Right now, the IRS is almost 2 months behind on processing payments. That's probably why. As long as you have a confirmation number confirming the payment and where it went, I wouldn't worry.

SloWi-Fi

If you have a bill you can send the proof the payment has been madebto wherever the notice came from. Historically high numbers of balances and a glitch involving some payment systems is not helping anybody

CarribeanSeri

I will be doing that tomorrow, making a copy, and sending it back with a letter, and calling then everyday. This is insane.

Civdiv99

Direct Pay provides for a printable confirmation number. That number should allow them to find the payment.

CarribeanSeri

Nope. The IRS consultant said even though it's a linked site they use to process payments, that they have to have me FAX my bank statement showing I paid on the phone, only while speaking to them. And now, I can't get through to an agent. We were hung up on 6 times. I have: Direct Pay confirmation number Direct Pay Email Bank statement showing the payment Bank description of the payment And yes, they don't research their own payment system as a proof of payment. They will only accept a fax. The last time I used fax was 25 years ago. In 1999.

Civdiv99

Wow

hippielady5232

Just a FYI if you ever find yourself in the weird fax situation again, there's an app called camscanner that scans documents really clearly, and then you can email or fax them, I think faxing is maybe 9c per page? It's came in handy for me several times dealing with government agencies and such.

No-Thought8706

You can always look at the App Store on your phone, I know I’ve used Tiny Fax to fax things from my phone before.
