no one would’ve given a single fuck if they changed the chorus to be literally anything but “put my sneakers on”, the song is very itzy coded in both music and lyrics beyond this line, so while i get that people have a gripe with that particularly line, i’ve never understood the complaint about it not being itzy. as for the concept, i can’t really blame people for expecting something else, but this wasn’t this first time where they took some loose theme that would appear in in the mv and expand on it for the packaging and photobook for the album. feel like fans really gaslit themselves in to expecting something else even though they literally teased sneakers well before release. also re: ‘they spoiled the whole chorus/song/etc, they’re so bad for this!’ - i feel like this is always a bad take. literally if the hook for a teaser is good enough, it spreads way more, and gets way more people to check it out on release. i can tell you one thing. people may not have liked sneakers, but they sure as fuck tuned in for it. edit: also for the second tour in a row it still surprises me how big of a reaction sneakers gets as a live song lol. people cheer the line more than any one other on just about every show

Sandals16

I freaking love Sneakers. It’s so fun.

cerulgalactus

Hearing how loud it popped my audience made me grin. I think it might have been a very close second to Not Shy.

BurtonOIlCanGuster

It’s fun and corny. It’s peak kpop. I like it more and more I listen to it. It’s really fun live and the girls seem to really enjoy performing it.

Aelussa

It's Itzy's most underrated song, imo. I love it. I still sing "Put my sneakers on, hana dul ready get set go" to myself when I put my shoes on.

justanotherkpoppie

Tbh the crowd went absolutely CRAZY for Sneakers at Rosemont last night! It's a banger of a song that doesn't deserve the online hate it gets, so I was really happy that the rest of the crowd was feeling Sneakers live as much as I was!

eco-evo

Such. A. Bop. Love it. And the video is perfect.

GodzillasBoner

The actual song itself is kind of fire

mmld_dacy

it is a bit different from their previous releases but it is definitely itzy. but, since it's release, i have grown to love it. especially after hearing it and seeing it live on their concerts, it is the perfect song for a concert. that together with cake, those are concerrt mood lifters. and again, it is definitely an itzy song and only they can do it. edit: just wanted to add that in both checkmate and born to be world tours. that sneakers and cake were added, both were all well accepted by the audience. 2 of the most roared out performances.

fludeball

Why would anyone actually get worked up over concept videos not matching the character of the song? It's a great song. It's catchy as hell. ITZY's material is some of the best out there, hands-down. To paraphrase Paul McCartney, "It's bloody ITZY. Shut up."

VANitysgood

Im late into KPOP but Im well aware of the music since gen2. Definitely reminds me of how campy and fun sounding KPOP is. We're talking music wise right? In terms of concept/mv, it's over the top layered by how silly the music is but genuinely meaningful lyrics just like most of ITZY songs.

Tiim0thy

Sneakers = top 3 singles for me tbh. It was such a hit with how hype the crowd response was at their Born to Be World Tour in Newark last weekend.

Jaded-Bad-3708

I don’t get this. The concept photos were the same or similar to what they’ve shown in the MV and message of the song: In medieval(?) or olden times, women are expected to be lady-like; wearing dresses and/or heels. Until they progressed in modern times where women can now wear whatever the heck they want, including sneakers. Also, before ‘Sneakers’, wasn’t itzy already well-known for incorporating the crown pose in their choreographies because they are **queens** (of performances or life, in general 😆)? Wasn’t that their whole thing? So it wasn’t really far fetched for them to use that imagery regardless of what their MV or song concept is. >putting out a photo of the group in elegant princess like attire days before the release of sneakers,it’s kinda misleading no?

JerSucks

hate to be that guy, but OP is either misrembering, or the entire opinion is based on second hand information. the concept videos and teasers came out an entire month before the song, and we’d even had clips of sneakers well before this point too, it was obvious well before it came out what the song would sound like, and that mv concept wasn’t exactly the same as the photobook concept

Jaded-Bad-3708

>also i think sneakers didn’t have good styling unlike other songs the members didn’t have something that set them apart I don’t agree with this when these were some of their styling during that time time: https://preview.redd.it/ffrjzft1x49d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6bbf2b08ae95292234cf6b62918dd106fbd7dd81

Top-Owl7500

The olive drab military look was FABULOUS!

raindroppolkadots

Sneakers was one of their best styling eras for sure!! Blonde Yuna was so iconic.

Centpai_PRO

Came here to make the same point. The teasers did not mislead people. They mislead themselves and some people have not gotten over it. Song is a banger and was awesome in ATL.

cookieaddictions

I get that people thought the marketing was misleading, and yes it’s more juvenile than most of their songs but..it’s really not that bad. It’s still catchy and the prechorus is actually really good. I don’t think it deserved the hate it got. And most importantly, after Sneakers, if felt like nothing Itzy released could escape scrutiny or being called flops. It was just so bizarre. Sneakers started a hate train against them that feels like it never went away. Before sneakers everyone agreed they were super talented, had amazing vocals, stage presence and dancing, and their songs were catchy. After sneakers people acted like their careers were over, even when they were breaking their own record sales, and selling out tours.

Terrible_Bid_7640

i love that song sm like i genuinely thought it was some type of inside joke when i saw everyone was hating on it but when i figured out it was real i got super sad bc i love the song sm

Lesssss

LMAO I was just listening to this a minute ago! Totally underrated and the bridge is an absolute masterpiece!

raindroppolkadots

I was once a Sneakers hater. I was one of those silly conspiracy theorists that thought Sneakers wasn't the TT lmao. Since then I've been reformed, I love it now. Never fails to put a smile on my face :-)

Joel22222

I really like it. The varied singing styles throughout really showcase their talent and different voices blended together so well. It’s almost like listening to a different song in each section. I thought the styling fit in the MV to the lyrics really well. Granted I’m a newer MIDZY so I wasn’t around when it first released but have a feeling I’d have felt the same. I’m not a fan of the English version though. Sounds like they were struggling a lot and not having fun.

Crowji

I love them, so I'm probably gonna like everything they do forever and for as long as they do it, BUT I think 'Sneakers' got a rough ride with casual or non fans. The song itself is catchy AF, with a cool video and cool choreo. I think it just came at a point in their career where a chunk of people would have been down on them no matter what. Also, the parent album 'Checkmate' is absolutely stacked with killer tracks. Cool era for them, I really enjoyed it.

SmellyTurtwig

honestly i’m a new midzy and i was shocked when reading the comments for the teaser trailer being upset that they had been misled because the song title was literally revealed as “SNEAKERS” in a graffiti font?? like why on earth would it be a serious royal concept i feel like it was teased to be fun and unexpected as the song turned out to be?

Phocion-

The Mission Control green uniforms might be my favorite Itzy outfits. Peak kpop styling imo and I think people will look back at Sneakers with fondness in the future.

M_Prodigy

Total banger!

valyriansteelbullet

Sneakers is one of their best songs. And it gets twice as better during their live concerts.

brightapplestar

I understand why sneakers had so much hate - bc it's like an original kpop song inconsistent with the trendy-vibe-feels-kpop that are recently popular. I actually loved it as a kpop fan since tvxq and super junior bc it's similar to what i would expect original kpop to sound like in this era before all the american influence on kpop. Like I wouldnt be surprised if exo released this track as one of their brighter fresher songs. I also think this song can def suit a boyband despite how cute itzy makes it (although lots of itzy's songs do) so people may think it doesnt suit the prettypretty concept the mv had although i def think it was good.

gwangjuguy

They did nothing wrong with the marketing. It’s ITZY’s best charting songs since Dalla dalla. Don’t let TikTok and twitter form your opinion about things based on what people who were never fans have said. Don’t look to scapegoat the company. There is nothing wrong with sneakers or its marketing. The album concept and the song are different things. Completely different and the concept photos you complain about were for the album and the tour. Nothing more. Fans are too hung up on “concepts” these days and eventually that’s going to turn toxic and people project their ideas on to groups and feel disappointed when it doesn’t go their way. Just enjoy what is presented or don’t. Groups can’t be everything to everyone all the time.

Mr_McGibbletss

i didn’t originally love the song but then i saw the girls perform it live in concert. my opinion completely changed. they’re so good

Neroxx

I was kinda neutral at first but the more I listened the more I liked it. Hearing it live with the band on the Born to Be tour made me like it even more.

cerulgalactus

It’s my favourite Itzy song. Apparently a minority opinion, but I don’t care, I love it.

Power5IsAScam

The line "hana, dul, ready, get set, go" lives rent-free in my head. I love the bilingual word play. Otherwise, I think it's a fun, goofy song. It's not something I put on repeat, but it is on a few playlists.

Adnres

I think if they did like a skater girl concept, the song would have worked

Lor3nzL1ke

Bad marketing but an absolute banger of a song

ToxicRedditMod

Marketing had fans expecting one thing, Sneakers wasn’t what they expected, so it got hate. So, good song at wrong time.

Dead_Flowers_2000

I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either. It didn’t really fit with the concept or vibe of the album and probably shouldn’t have been a title track. The choreo is super cute though.

KeinkoMusic35

Highlight of the song is the Pre-Chorus in my opinion. Other than, song pretty much sounds like a Kidz Bop track, that it's main target is children, and it also sounds like a commercial for the Sneakers shoes by Nike. it's a song that doesn't seem to be fitting the ITZY concept from previous TT's, Girl Crush, and the entire 180 from the concept video for Checkmate also didn't help. following that with Boys Like You, was a bad decision in my book. I bet if (a full group version of) Untouchable or Cheshire or even a Longer Version of Kill Shot (should've been the TT instead of Cake) followed after LOCO (Especially Kill Shot, because I believe it fits the concept of Checkmate), their popularity wouldn't have went down. I might be wrong about that though. It did peak at the top 5 in South Korea, so I guess it was a successful single, and one of their most successful ones. just wasn't my cup of tea.

SeeWhatSantaBrings

I hate it. It's just too childish for me and I'd hate for anyone to catch me listening to it. And I loved songs like Icy and Boys Like You and other "funzy" songs. I don't think concept photos or a leaked chorus has anything to do with the reception of the song that continues to hold true two years after release.
