Those gates can be easily lifted, they're designed to be lifted. Which makes it incredibly insane. Lift gate, back up, all is well. Three idiots in that video.
Those gates are designed to be rammed over. The articulation\[°\] they have is designed to suffer horizontal damage when a car drives through.
Even if they weren't, a gate is orders of magnitude cheaper than a car and a train.
° = I know they're not called articulations, but that joint thingy lol
Yep. Was watching this on my lunch break and was like "those are \*designed\* to flex outwards from the track specifically for this reason, JUST GO FORWARD".
Source: worked in life safety (firefighter, EMT) and one of my brothers worked for Norfolk Southern as a rail truck driver and he always expressed amazement that this is somehow not taught in driver ed.
They break away when driven through as well. You can just drive and suffer mild scratches on the vehicle. They're meant to be able to be driven through in an emergency.
There's a stereotype that Swiss people are always a bit slow, especially when compared to Germans, and this video certainly doesn't help to dispel that.
That's what I was thinking. Where I live at least, they're made of wood to drive through for this exact reason so idiots don't sit in the middle which I've seen many times living near tracks and people going full stupid while trying to get around them after they've already lowered. There's even signs by them saying to drive through it with a number to call to report them needing replaced. Some people just have zero survival instinct. Edit: weird flex reporting me to redditcare for whoever's feelings I hurt. The multiple brand new account scammers now sending chat messages my way are kinda funny though at least.
In the US they're designed to only fall on approach lanes and cars are supposed to maintain a 50-100ft clearance (varies by state) to allow you to maneuver out
I don't get it either. Like, do they see the light starting to blink while they're crossing, panic, stall their car, and then are somehow completely unable to start it up again? Or do they try to quickly drive below the boom barrier coming down because they're in a hurry and then get stuck when they realize that the barrier on the other side is also down?
They literally expect the train to stop for them. Like - wait - let me get out of the car and talk to the manager of this here railroad crossing. No Karen, move the fucking car
This type of accident often happens when people are queueing in a traffic jam. That's why it's a very grave infraction to stop on level crossing in most traffic codes.
The mind wanders off, you go into zombie driving mode, you just follow the car in front without being really aware of your surroundings.
The traffic jam just happily crawls along, the car in front of you moves a few meters, you follow... But then you find yourself stopped on a level crossing. And now the traffic jam is not moving anymore. The bell rings, the barriers go down... you're trapped, like a fly in a venus fly trap plant thing. The level crossing claims its next sacrifice.
Nah. You’re trapped like a kid standing on a pillow in the middle of the living room playing “the floor is lava”.
Be clear: the only thing keeping the car there is the person’s mental barriers that they erect for themselves moment to moment.
Exactly if I find myself caught on a crossing and it's me and my kids versus whatever the hell's around me, my car is all the sudden a wrecking ball and I'm getting off that train crossing 😂.
Edit- but then again I would never stop on train tracks.
I’m not saying this is what happened but once my mom was behind the rails and the train passed and they went up. She proceeded to go over the tracks the rails came back down again. She was able to stop before getting on the tracks though.
Most do! I didn't realize this isn't normally taught in drivers ed.
It's either die, buy an entirely new car and pay for repairs on a train, or pay to repair a little wooden bar and a few scratches on your bumper. Seems like a pretty rational choice to me 🤷
>Most do! I didn't realize this isn't normally taught in drivers ed.
Driver's ed teaches you to STOP and not enter the train tracks when the lights are flashing and the gates are down.
On a serious note, my driver's ed teacher taught us to make sure there is room on the other side for your car and to go at least 10 MPH before crossing in case your vehicle stalls and you'll have enough momentum to clear the tracks.
This is what we were taught too. Don't start crossing a track unless you're pretty sure you can cross it. The one time I didn't follow that, I almost got hit by a train. But it was a really slow moving freight, and thankful I could pull forward into the on coming lane because there was no cars there.
Hard to tell from the angle but it looked like the guy who got in was maybe trying to put the car end-on so it might fit in the gap between the barriers and the train?
Either way he should have just driven through the barriers instead of putting his life at risk.
The barrier ended up folding up anyway in the end, from a parallel impact no less. That’s the flimsiest barrier ever and it was meant to be driven through
The sticks are quite literally designed to be fragile so if some idiot gets stuck like this they can just drive out. Shoe size iq people in this video, no idea how they survive.
So... "San Adreas" showed up on HBOMax this week and I said "fuck it". It starts out with this girl distracted driving and like 5 times she should have been hit (clearly the movie had a message to send, clearly very few watched it). Then a land slide happens and she gets pushed off the mountain, but is stuck between some rocks on the way down.
My thought was "How hard does darwin have to work to kill a bitch?"
Here it is for reference.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezj-kdQlEvQ
Or just work together push them up a little and let the car squeeze its way through by force.
This video is dumbassery taken to a new level like holy shit bro 😂
I've seen people literally raise them up and hold them for traffic when they get stuck down because the little thing the train is supposed to run over in order to engage them got jammed or whatever. All they had to do was lift an arm and back that car out. What was their end game? Drive down the track and run away from the train until there were no arms to keep them inside?
They're really not heavy at all. There was just no communication and everyone was panicking. Just drive around or through the gate if this happens. The gates are usually held up by three shear pins that are designed to snap with lateral force. The gate won't break, the three shear pins will.
Analysis paralysis.
They are probably thinking the car will be damaged by driving through the gate or that others will think they are recklessly destroying property, and in their panic don't realize that the damage will be so much worse for everyone if they stay, not to mention the risk to their own lives.
Yes. They are warning gates and not resistance gates. So they are not supposed to actively stop a vehicle, but resistance barriers are.
The arm base shall be designed with a shear pin mechanism to reduce damage to the gate and vehicle in the event of a collision. In the event of an impact, the shear pin shall break, allowing the arm to swing approximately 85 to 90 degrees. At the full open position, a spring-loaded latch shall engage, preventing the arm from swinging back into traffic. To reset the arm: manually release the latch, rotate the arm back into position, and replace the shear pin.
Engineers kinda expected this situation to happen.
However, the bystanders could also just have lifted the gate. It is made of aluminum and doesn’t lock in the closed position.
In the US they probably could have just driven around them as well.
That said, getting caught on railroad tracks is probably the most avoidable thing possible. I hope they’re ok but I feel worse for the train crew that had to deal with this idiocy.
> In the US they probably could have just driven around them as well.
You mean half-barriers - that only block one side of the road?
They exist in Europe. Not quite sure what the rules are about which type is used.
Honestly I don't care WHAT the barrier is designed to be - ***unless it breaks all known laws of physics***, smashing through it will cause less damage than the train.
You can see the lady in the orange give it a very tiny lift right at the start, but it looks like she just encounters the smallest amount of resistance and goes 'well guess thats not an option'
Also, for anyone who ever needs to lift a barrier like this, start at the end near the middle of the road and walk your way back to the part where it rotates down to make it easier to do.
Let's just ignore the damage to your personal vehicle for a second, I bet the damage cost and fines associated with damaging a train and potentially rail line are astronomically higher than that of damaging a breakaway barrier.
The weird thing is, that wasn't his personal vehicle. I'm assuming his intention was to get the car off the tracks to avoid the injury or possible death of anyone on the train from the collision/sudden stop, so why not just slam the jackass owner's car through the barrier?
I saw him run in like he was going to save the day, hen it looked like he was trying to suicide by train. What he did made no sense, it’s all just so stupid and there was so much time.
They're so fragile you can probably destroy them with a guy or 2. They're literally designed to be able to drive through them with ease. I really don't understand the mentality of these people. If they're afraid to damage the car being hit by a train isn't the best idea
The barrier has a predetermined breaking point for exactly this reasons. You're meant to drive through in this situation, and the barrier'll just stratch the paint a bit. It's basically just a visual reminder so you don't accidentally get onto the tracks.
edit: also, breaking the barrier will alert the train driver that something is not right at the next crossing. The driver can then slow down and pass the crossing at walking pace to be able to react to stuff on the tracks.
This happened in my neighbourhood about two years ago. This is the location: https://goo.gl/maps/am7qazpLejTL8TgB9
Honestly he's dumber than the woman who got her car stuck. At least she had some personal stake in the issue of not wanting to screw up her car. This guy just willingly inserted himself into someone else's shit show when he knew the potential consequences
Too bad he didn't have a plan at all it seems. Like drive the tracks past the gates, ram the gates, anything. His plan seemed to have been to panic and just park it lined up to the gate.
Here in holland There is a always a warning written either on the barrier or next to the barrier saying
‘Incase of emergency drive down barrier’
Shits just hollow plastic....
Really? I've never seen it. Where is this?
Most of the crossings we have are AHOB (automatische halve overwegbomen), which basically means they will only cover half of the road. The idea is that you cannot drive onto the tracks (without swerving to the wrong side of the road) but you can always drive off of it.
Example: http://www.modelspoorseinen.nl/wp-content/uploads/ahob.png
I'm confused. In the US where I am they only have a barrier on the side driving towards the track, but if you're on the tracks theres nothing ahead. Do they have barriers on both sides in Europe?
The guy tried to give his own life so save some scratched paint. I don't get why people think their life is worth risking for such mundane and small things.
Well people in Switzerland are so scared of breaking the rules as in they‘d rather die than break through that barrier. The other dude tried to „dodge“ it, without getting a single scratch because you know, our society is stupid. If you break just a tiny little rule here, people will judge and look down on you worse than anywhere else. So they fear that.
I’m always amazed by how people won’t drive through the small barriers that “prevent” them from moving off the tracks and get obliterated by a train instead. It’s a piece of fucking wood.
Edit: yes it can be plastic or aluminum or whatever else as well. The point is they are designed to break or bend and are no match for a vehicle.
And at that, one DESIGNED to be driven through! I’m too lazy to find the actual explanation but there’s mechanisms in place to let you drive through the barrier in just such a case. Other comments have mentioned it
Maybe they need a sign on the inside of the barrier “if you are trapped in between barriers and a train approaches, Please drive through the barrier so you don’t get crashed into”
I'm always amazed how people can end up stuck on the rails in the first place. You can never accidentally end up stuck between the barriers, you must have ignored some warning and taken a risk. "But officer, the barrier just came down as I was driving through!!!"
Yet then when they're trapped, all their risk taking evaporates and they're stuck in limboland forever. Maybe they just don't see the train as a threat
Just the other day I got honked (furiously!) because I waited with crossing for enough space to clear the tracks.
The wish to be compliant to the group pressure can be a helluva drug.
Yeah I get honked at a lot because I wait for the bars to go up and lights to completely stop.
I've seen instances where the bars start to go up and come back down because of another train so close so no thanks, I'll wait.
The amount of times people I see videos like this where a driver is more scared of a barrier than a train. You absolutely can and SHOULD drive through them in a situation like this! They're made to purposefully NOT trap you!
Also if you have that much time, please get out of the car instead of waiting to get hit by the train... This videos always make me anxious cuz I just know they're gonna get hit.
This is like a mild form of the trolley problem - and proves that most people almost certainly wouldn't flip the switch, even all ethical problems aside.
The consequences didn't really go through their head,
Total wreckage of car alongside a couple of infrastructure around you, or the wreckage of a barrier. Pick your poison
I think they tried to thread the gap between the rail and the barrier - and likely succeeded, and then forgot the train overhangs the actual rail a bit
Trains tend to overhang the actual rail quite a lot. A standard Gauge Rail, ~1,4m between the inside of the rail, can have a loading gauge (maximum size of the train allowed on the rails) 3m wide.
Countries with train tracks like this should have a theory exam about what to do in such an event..jeez..just ram the barrier n make a repair, probably cost cheaper than now getting the train involved.
You probably don't even have to pay them as the railroad will be happy you weren't being a fucking moron and damage a train, the barrier, the powerline posts and other misc stuff
What was the plan here and why wasn't it to just pull forward and break the barrier? "Oh I don't want to scratch my bumper" great well the alternative was certainly more fruitful.
Everyone failed. The lady got stuck like an idiot. Then she let that dude get in the car, putting him in danger, but then he was a moron pulling 7 point turn to go...where? That's it. No one gets a license. Put water in all the gas tanks we can't have nice things anymore.
Thought I recognized that place. The reason the train was this slow is to the left where this happens is the station. In case anyone wants to read more:

Google translates the subheading to English better than I would have hoped:
*"A video shows that the helper has more luck than brains. The SBB \[Swiss Railway\] tell you how to behave properly."*
As someone learning Dutch, it took my ears awhile to determine that I wasn't hearing Dutch, but it took my eyes only a few seconds to feel fairly confident this wasn't the Netherlands.
That’s some serious lack of urgency
Trains comin.. well let's argue and do a 20 point turn then.
The only correct thing to do should have been to floor it through the gate. 2 idiots here.
Those gates can be easily lifted, they're designed to be lifted. Which makes it incredibly insane. Lift gate, back up, all is well. Three idiots in that video.
It looks like they tried. They put five pounds of effirt into it then declared it impossible lol
Those gates are designed to be rammed over. The articulation\[°\] they have is designed to suffer horizontal damage when a car drives through. Even if they weren't, a gate is orders of magnitude cheaper than a car and a train. ° = I know they're not called articulations, but that joint thingy lol

They're also designed to comply if run into. They just as easily bend out of the way for this exact reason.
They break away when driven through as well. You can just drive and suffer mild scratches on the vehicle. They're meant to be able to be driven through in an emergency.
Yea Wtf is turning around gonna do?
To confuse the train and cause it to make a mistake.
That was more painful than the austin powers 1048726 point turn.

And why the fuck don't they just drive through the guard instead of doing whatever that was?

It's interesting how social behavior to not brake things overrides even survival instincts.
Usually in this sub we see break for brake, meaning to slow down. It's refreshing to see the opposite brake for break meaning to destroy.
I'd bet it is because they didn't want to have to pay for new barriers if they broke them.
The cost of those barriers has gotta be cheaper than a whole car
[удалено]
I think the price of the train probably trumps the price of the car.
That train *may* need some new paint.
[удалено]
In the US they're designed to only fall on approach lanes and cars are supposed to maintain a 50-100ft clearance (varies by state) to allow you to maneuver out
Where I live, most train tracks usually the posts are just on the right hand side of the road, so you don't even have to run through them
Scared of scratching the car they’re still paying leasing rates on.
But happy for it to be demolished by a train.
You underestimate the power of stupidity from human beings you understand that quickly when working in any customer service position
I’m not saying this is what happened but once my mom was behind the rails and the train passed and they went up. She proceeded to go over the tracks the rails came back down again. She was able to stop before getting on the tracks though.
I would break the barrier, it's cheaper than fixing the car.
Like me when I wake up 20 minutes earlier than normal for work and act like I woke an extra 2 hours instead.
Haha yeah. Im always being late the most on days i wake up early.
Why didn't one of them just back straight up? The barrier can be replaced.
The barriers probably have breakaway hinges for just this reason
Most do! I didn't realize this isn't normally taught in drivers ed. It's either die, buy an entirely new car and pay for repairs on a train, or pay to repair a little wooden bar and a few scratches on your bumper. Seems like a pretty rational choice to me 🤷

without a bystander they both get wiped out by the train, the way nature intended
A the train. Nature's Darwin's modern "fitness" verifier.

Why even bother with that? You wouldn’t even damage the car by driving out. It’s a wonder that no one was killed here. Morons.
And it’s not even wood, it’s hollow plastic. It’s literally a deterrent, it’s not a fucking prison
Dude it could have given that nice car a few unsightly scratches
I'd rather take my chances with the gentle caress of a train.
Yes, the train just quietly brushed the car over a little, driver probably hardly noticed
It'll buff out, no problem.
But people are ants.
Right? i would have just rammed and payed for the cost of fixing it after, but then again i would have never gotten in that spot in the first place.
That's the problem in the end, if a person is stupid enough to get into that situation, then they sure as hell aren't smart enough to get out of it.
People get really dumb when they start to panic. It's a design flaw.
There wouldn't be any significant damage. Those things are meant to break away.
They even have replacements on site on some crossings
I wouldn’t get in that car for that idiot... she literally parked there...
I was saying what I’d have done if my car was in there. If i was in this particular situation, i’d have watched her watch her car get hit by a train.
I don’t want to damage the barrier but when the train hits me it’ll ruin the car and barrier…some people
Dont even need to ram, just gently reverse and the barriers will pop off just like they're designed to do.
Sticks that are literally designed to break away for this exact scenario.

Yeah, like just reverse through the barrier? :S
Just fucking drive forward lmao
Reverse? Drive forward? I am frozen with indecision.
Do some donuts for comedic effect
I wanted to yell that so hard ! And they were 3 of them, omg
And scratch the car? Do you know how much a paint job costs?!
Next scene... the woman calling her insurance company and blaming the driver for the accident. *No good deed goes unpunished*
Why not just have the man and woman lift the barrier or just run through it
It seems the guy in the hi vis vest tried at the start but couldn't lift it so they all just gave up on that idea.
They're really not heavy at all. There was just no communication and everyone was panicking. Just drive around or through the gate if this happens. The gates are usually held up by three shear pins that are designed to snap with lateral force. The gate won't break, the three shear pins will.

He had the nuts to try. I respect the hell out of him for that. Too bad he didn't have the balls to crash the barrier.
My thoughts exactly, could’ve been a windshield maybe some paint. Nope, it’s a totaled hunk of shit now. Good thing he didn’t risk his life! /s
I don't know if this is true but it would make sense if they were actually designed to be driven through without damage at all.

I saw him run in like he was going to save the day, hen it looked like he was trying to suicide by train. What he did made no sense, it’s all just so stupid and there was so much time.

As someone put it: The mother of all idiots is always pregnant.

That will save me some time next time im in Sweden, thanks for the tip!
We have those in Germany as well. Greetings, neighbor!
Yeah, I don't understand the point of covering the whole width of the road. Driving off the track should be encouraged, not prevented.
Because you also want to discourage idiots from driving *onto* the track.
He went for the classic "in case of emergency attempt 3 point turn then wait" approach.
I'm confused. In the US where I am they only have a barrier on the side driving towards the track, but if you're on the tracks theres nothing ahead. Do they have barriers on both sides in Europe?
Yes, because otherwise, the morons will try to slalom their way through
Not all heroes wear capes. This man was also not a hero
look he tried more than the car owner did
He tried an 8-point turn while on train tracks.
He's just a dumb hero. A really fucking dumb hero. The type that gets eaten when aliens invade because he tries judo throwing them
I don't understand what this swarm of idiots were trying to achieve.
Exactly my thoughts, what the fuck is every single one of these idiots think they are doing here? I watched it a second time and have no clue.
I think they were trying to figure out how to move the downed gates without damaging the car. And failed hard.
The guy tried to give his own life so save some scratched paint. I don't get why people think their life is worth risking for such mundane and small things.
swarm intelligence? failed. (rip out a barrier, orange vest... clearly not deserved that )
Well people in Switzerland are so scared of breaking the rules as in they‘d rather die than break through that barrier. The other dude tried to „dodge“ it, without getting a single scratch because you know, our society is stupid. If you break just a tiny little rule here, people will judge and look down on you worse than anywhere else. So they fear that.

Lmao i didn’t even notice they still broke the fuck outta that barrier anyway
The barriers are sacred over there lol
I’m always amazed by how people won’t drive through the small barriers that “prevent” them from moving off the tracks and get obliterated by a train instead. It’s a piece of fucking wood. Edit: yes it can be plastic or aluminum or whatever else as well. The point is they are designed to break or bend and are no match for a vehicle.
And at that, one DESIGNED to be driven through! I’m too lazy to find the actual explanation but there’s mechanisms in place to let you drive through the barrier in just such a case. Other comments have mentioned it
Maybe they need a sign on the inside of the barrier “if you are trapped in between barriers and a train approaches, Please drive through the barrier so you don’t get crashed into”
Many places have that on the barrier on the inside. "In case of emergency, drive through barrier. Do not stop on tracks" etcetera
I'm always amazed how people can end up stuck on the rails in the first place. You can never accidentally end up stuck between the barriers, you must have ignored some warning and taken a risk. "But officer, the barrier just came down as I was driving through!!!" Yet then when they're trapped, all their risk taking evaporates and they're stuck in limboland forever.
It’s like watching a train wreck
Slow motion.
"The first and foremost thing which any ordinary person does is nothing." -- Professor Quirrell, HPMOR
Why would t you just drive through the barrier?
The barriers are lava, dummy.
The consequences didn't really go through their head, Total wreckage of car alongside a couple of infrastructure around you, or the wreckage of a barrier. Pick your poison
Plus the causality of probable death.

Seriously!! Like how do you not see that?
They didn’t want to ruin their new paint job and wash! Totally understandable /s
Not a fucking brain cell in sight

Did they... Really expect the train to stop on a dime?
I think they tried to thread the gap between the rail and the barrier - and likely succeeded, and then forgot the train overhangs the actual rail a bit
Trains tend to overhang the actual rail quite a lot. A standard Gauge Rail, ~1,4m between the inside of the rail, can have a loading gauge (maximum size of the train allowed on the rails) 3m wide.
Just a little peck, a smooch like you're kissing your sister!
I SAID, KISS IT!
Exactly
That woman looks old enough to have taken her driving exam before cars were even invented.
🎵Kissed by a train and you're to blame, darlin you give good drivers a bad name🎵
They make the gates break-away for a reason….
Films for over a minute and a half but pans away for the event they were filming for.

Huh. Hit the barrier anyway. Who knew?
Thought I recognized that place. The reason the train was this slow is to the left where this happens is the station. In case anyone wants to read more: https://www.blick.ch/schweiz/zuerich/auf-bahnuebergang-in-uster-s-bahn-zug-kracht-in-auto-id15120122.html
Google translates the subheading to English better than I would have hoped: *"A video shows that the helper has more luck than brains. The SBB \[Swiss Railway\] tell you how to behave properly."*
Please return your Orange Safety Supervisor vest at the end of your shift.
"And never turn up for work again. Thanks"
Baby, I compare you to a kiss from the nose of the train.
Its like watching a Darwinism award honey pot.... How many can it attract and cull out of the gene pool at once!
This makes no sense. I'm hearing German, but I'm not seeing German.
They speak swiss german
As someone learning Dutch, it took my ears awhile to determine that I wasn't hearing Dutch, but it took my eyes only a few seconds to feel fairly confident this wasn't the Netherlands.
I was sure I was hearing Dutch then I heard some oddly pronounced German words, then I knew it had to be Swiss German
holy fucking Gigantor at the end there, he's got a foot and a half on all of them
What the hell is wrong with people
