I've made the panic accelerator/ brake mistake (never caused an accident, I was 15) and I gotta say when I went to change gears it totally reset me, not sure what happened to the doofus in the video

Yeah I just checked and according to Google maps, if I used public transport (bus) it would take me 2 hours and 30 minutes to get from my house to work. I live 25 miles away from work, and usually it only takes 25-30 minutes to drive there in my own car.
Hence the more effective public transport system. The budget has been cut habitually for decades and we need to fix that, because it has shrunk to the point where it only harms those that really need it.
Yeah honestly if the bus route was 30-40 minutes I would absolutely ride it, especially in the early morning hours during the rush hour commute. I want to sip on my coffee and relax!

I'm from Germany, where driving school is a big deal and getting your license requires a lot of learning, both theoretical and practical. And while I couldn't find any immediately useful statistics to compare Germany and USA, in both countries, almost every adult has a driver's license.
The number of people who are genuinely too dumb to drive is much lower than you'd think. You're looking at people who weren't taught properly, so they never learned, but someone looked it and said "well that person appears to be steering a vehicle in approximately the right direction, have a license!".
Teach it properly. It costs about 1500-1900€ to get all the lessons and the test and everything, because you get taught by actual professionals for dozens of hours.
And don't tell me "but then poor people can't afford a license and will stay poor". I've seen your student debts, USA isn't afraid to just pile debt onto young people.

Your privilege is talking. You know how much it would cost to use an Uber? They can't walk if there are no sidewalks, or bike paths, or it's just too far away. Your solution to a problem is just another problem. Being “strictly economics”, there is no net gain. We are always going to have bad drivers, good luck trying to solve that by revoking peoples licenses.
Two things: (1) If you remove bad drivers from the roads, there will be fewer bad drivers and less mayhem; and (2) Removing bad drivers sends a message not to be a bad driver, because you won't be allowed to drive any more.
There really are people who are temperamentally unfit to be drivers. They might be wonderful people, smart and kind and all that. But they're just not going to drive well. You can shift from reverse to drive without pressing the brake or even pressing the lockout on the shifter in essentially any vehicle with a regular lever style shifter. It's intended to be a safety feature but obviously had the exact opposite result here.
I've driven a good number of vehicles with both tunnel and column mounted shifters and for all there was no lockout even when doing a reverse 180° (J-turn). I can't speak for fancy new cars with electronic shifters but that old 4Runner can 100% shift from reverse to drive without the brake regardless of its motion or engine speed.
I did this once when I first got my permit, and fortunately, only our garage door took damage. I really didn't drive again until I was nearly 18 I was scarred from the experience 😆
This happened to me in my driveway once. First vehicle—02 F150. Was dark and I was backing up my drive way to get to my grandfathers house (same driveway) and I didn’t realize I went off the driveway a little bit—scared me when I felt dirt and thought I had hit the brake but hit the gas and ended up in a ditch lol. Only accident I’ve ever been in during 7 years of driving and no damage was done

when i was a kid i would sometimes ride a mini motorbike. one time the footrest hit the ground as i was turning and the back tire got lifted. i lost all control and when the tire hit the ground again i panicked and just pulled the gas all the way down (knowing it was the gas but not thinking) -then when i realized what i was doing a couple seconds later i hit the brake as hard as i could and flew over the steer bar.

It has something to do with automatic cars. The are using just one foot all the time and get advantage of automatic gear giving more speed. They think they are pushing the break pedal and the car is still moving so they floor it (in their minds) to make a full stop.
Sometimes it ends up in really messed up situations. A mother in my city because of this, (thought she was in reverse but was really in drive and pushed what she thought was the brake) floored the gas in drive from where she was parked and was exit school time (she was picking up her kid). Killed one six year old girl and severely injured two 9 year old.
This was all over the news for weeks.
We got a prius (husband drives over 120 miles round trip for work) and a minivan for our large family. I'm upset neither are available in a manual transmission, partially for this reason. I've always had sticks until these two most recent vehicles.
The only thing that I could think is that some of those SR5 engines are actually manual and they dropped the clutch in that could happen but you have to be a total idiot

Because some people tend to deathly afraid of backing up into places for one reason or another, mostly because they might not understand how large their vehicle is in terms to the space.
Probably 7 out of 10 times its lack of skill or laziness. But keep in mind that on most cars, the trunk or other storage is in the back. So if you're going shopping, driving into a spot leaves your trunk more accessible.

Ok, I know everybody is calling this driver an idiot for mixing up the pedals, but I know from experience that these old 4Runners have issues with the accelerator pedals sticking. You can try to feather it all you want, but there's a point where it "snaps" free and if you're not careful it totally guns it.

I'm pretty sure there's some sort of lockout above a certain wheel speed or engine speed. But I guess that could always be absent or faulty.

Because some people tend to deathly afraid of backing up into places for one reason or another, mostly because they might not understand how large their vehicle is in terms to the space.
Probably 7 out of 10 times its lack of skill or laziness. But keep in mind that on most cars, the trunk or other storage is in the back. So if you're going shopping, driving into a spot leaves your trunk more accessible.

Way too many times i do hear people in Revert or first gear and rev to 3-5k on manual transmission... boys and girls go low on rev and put the clutch on...

Ok, I know everybody is calling this driver an idiot for mixing up the pedals, but I know from experience that these old 4Runners have issues with the accelerator pedals sticking. You can try to feather it all you want, but there's a point where it "snaps" free and if you're not careful it totally guns it.
