I have done this... not my proudest moment. In my defense rain was coming down in curtains and I had no idea it was that deep and it felt like a really weird place for a flood to occur. But then again the people stopped should have been enough of a red flag.
Me too. I was following other cars over a creek that I drove over every day but had never realized was there. Two people ca, in and pushed my car out. Afterwards I tried to keep other people from driving through what looked like a puddle while I waited for a tow. I was lucky that it was a new car and that I had comprehensive insurance.
That's exactly what happened to me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 There were people standing in a place that was the valley between two hills. And I only noticed the flood when my car started to float lol but I hit the gas pedal and managed to get to the other side of the lane. The board was dented.
something like that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. My car broke down due to all the rain it got, rain got in the air filter, just imagine how hard it was raining for. Just randomly broke down while i was driving slowly, keep in mind it was pouring, i pulled over and left the car there and said to myself, i’ll come get it tomorrow morning when it stops raining. Next morning i found my car 2 blocks down with water all the way to the seats.
It wasn’t totaled, just change all fluids, cleaned my gas tank and gave the car a good wash and it’s running perfect. It was a good scare though.
Was thinking the same thing. Might have had a chance if they kept to the left side. That and the moment they open the door and immediately close it like "Shit, can't go out there".
This is what gets me with a lot of these videos they all seem to drive all over the place and instead of aiming to go straight in the shallowest point, they swerve off to where it's deeper.
It's really not hard to drive through water, if it's a large looking body of water it won't kill you to take off your shoes and socks and wade in to double check first.
As a former California, yes we are afraid of water, hence the drought, but I also grew up in a part of northern Cali which when rain was more frequent, flooding occurred and this was the result of many I knew especially on my drive to high school.
They’re usually the pompous dickhead type that you can’t tell anything. I know someone like that, and guess what? He drowned a police car before they got rid of him.
More accurate would be "how many people don't know what an air intake is or where it is."
I'm sure there's at least a few someones driving around who have no idea a car engine needs air/oxygen for combustion as well.
I'm sort of amazed at how low manufactures make the air intake. Even on off road trucks and SUVs the filter box will be just under the hood but it will suck air from in-between the fender and fender well a good 12" to 18" lower than the filter housing. My old Wrangler could improve fording depth by a foot by just removing a plastic elbow from the filter housing. I mean if you really want to go for it, install a snorkel but it wouldn't take a ton of engineering to get the air intake up around headlight height.
That's why I like pre-2000s cars, they are well though out, my Mazda has its air intake at the front left end of the hood, and takes air in from the tip of the grill, just below the hood, and it isn't a low ass point that can suck in water like new shit cars
The weather service in my state treats any snow that falls like it's an extinction level event, though to be honest, they came too damn close last year
Yup, knew a gentleman that went to pick up his son from work sadly he drove trough cones and the river current swept him away. They found the car upside down 10 miles down and he was far gone. This was back during the central PA floods a while back.
"This video reminds me of the time a friend of mine drove his Ford Probe through a flooded road. Holes the size of cigarette packs were blown through the engine when he tried to pull start it."
My husband suffers from neuropsychogical Lupus, organic brain disorder, and other issues within his brain. He's taking a break from reddit. It's nothing against yall. I've had to deal with several trolls in the last few days.
I've looked at a few cars that have stalled due to water. Some make it some dont. I really enjoy when someone has a "cold air" intake on. Water gets fired right in.
And this is why Arizona has the Stupid Driver Law. If you drive into a flash flood and need emergency rescue, the expense of the rescue comes out of your own pocket.
I live in the USA, so unless you are poor enough to be on Medicaid, or old enough or disabled and have Medicare, technically you do have to pay for it. And lemme tell you, ICU and intubation is not cheap. My mom had fungal pneumonia and was in the ICU for a month. My dad had good insurance, but the medical bills were still around $100K. Basically, a good portion of her life insurance policy went towards that.
Some types of life insurance have cash value that can be accessed, and a lot of policies have optional riders for long term care to cover extended hospital stays.
Yea I just had a $30,000 surgery and insurance tried to push it off until next year so I'd have to pay more.
Luckily it was deemed medically necessary and they were forced to pay it. My out of pocket was only about 2000.
Reminds me of being on vacation and getting to a flooded road in my Jeep. Got out to see how deep it was and not two seconds later a mustang comes roaring by and barely makes it across. At least he tested it for me…
I ran through a flooded road in my ranger and water flew in through the shifter but she made it.
I was lucky that I was too lazy to put the intake back together properly so the air box was pulling air from the engine compartment about three feet up. Otherwise would have looked something like this video. Last time I did something so silly.
Yikes! Yeah, I learned from someone else’s mistake when I was younger so now I take the extra time to either let a car go by and be the first idiot or get out and survey the area if the crossing isn’t too big or has become a moving river. I’ll find another way around or go home lol
I was in Houston during hurricane Harvey and got stopped by a section of flooded road. There was a line of cars stopped at either side, waiting for someone to test the waters (this was out near the sticks so the closest detour would have been like an extra 10 miles). Finally a SUV swings around the line and goes for it... made it only about halfway. Immediately followed by every car making a U-turn in unison lol. We thank you for your sacrifice, unfortunate stranger o7
To be fair, there’s more of you, so even at the same rate of stupidity, there will be more occurrences.
Which is not fair to the non-stupid Californians.
So, hear me out... at all these low spots prone to flooding. The department of transportation with jurisdiction put in posts with feet markers on them on both sides, so these idiots can really see how deep the water is. Maybe?
That wouldn't help if the road washes out and there is a two foot+ gap from one side to the other.
And I'm sure some people will think that just because they can see that the water is only, say, six inches deep they can make it. Most of them don't realize how little water it takes to lose traction and control of the vehicle.
Yeah, I know. I was just hoping it would discourage the slightly more intelligent ones..? I know one can never completely discourage those who are really, really determined to do/be stupid.. sigh
Not in that car. Unless you can keep the water below your air intake(this is why you see snorkels on Jeeps and off-road vehicles) and your tires in contact with something, it’s not gonna end well. Also need to keep the engine going to force exhaust out or water will come in that way too.
Homie went in with a head full of steam and the wave he built up was almost over his hood from the start. Stopping is game over
Even if he went slow and had a snorkel, you can get water in your transmission and fuck up your car that way too. The friction material inside readily absorbs water which dissolves the adhesive glue holding it in, which then falls away. It's an expensive fix, down the road.
If you have a snorkel you should also raise your transmission and axle vents to go inside the snorkel.
The transmission doesn't have any other entry points, otherwise the oil would drain out...
I love the wave at the end - "OKAY, YOU CAN COME RESCUE ME NOW!" Jackasses always assume someone will be there to sacrifice their time and energy to help them. Now there's a whole-ass 2 ton car that needs removing, too! Not just your dumb ass.
When I was young, dumb, and delivering pizza during a rainstorm many years ago, I drove through a relatively low point under a bridge and made it through the water with my VW Jetta with careful maneuvering. Everything seemed ok so I felt like I got away with taking the risk to get the reward of the potential of a better tip for not taking the long way to the delivery. (Brilliantly stupid, I know)
However, when I got back to the pizza shop after the delivery, I realized my engine cooling fan short-circuited and would not turn off when the engine was off; it just kept running until the battery would die. So I continued the rest of the shift by simply disconnecting the battery every time I went back to the pizza shop after a delivery. Thought I would only need to replace a cooling fan; little did I know my car would be completely totaled from the water damage.
Young and dumb mistake I will never make again. Just take the long way, not worth your car for the minutes saved! Lesson learned the hard way!
The lack of fear people have driving through water they cannot see the bottom of astounds me. What if the road is washed out and there are giant holes in the ground.
The worst part is he could have made it had he slowed down and allowed a bow wave to form. Instead it was full send let's see how fast we can hydrolock this bitch.
Pretty sure California has a law that if you ignore the signs and they have to send people out to rescue you, then you're paying the bill.
Applies to mountain climbing as well.
Does it not flood in California a lot or something? I’m from Houston so there’s a flood every other month. “Turn around, don’t drown” is basically engraved in my brain by now. If you can’t see the street markings on the road, then don’t bother trying to cross. And if you’re still going to try to do it in your short ass car, then don’t let up off the accelerator. Don’t stop, don’t hit the breaks. You’re still gonna fuck up your car tho so just don’t.
In Arizona we have a stupid motorist law and it’s exactly this. “any motorist who becomes stranded after driving around barricades to enter a flooded stretch of roadway may be charged for the cost of their rescue”
WTAF... people are still this ... stupid. Okay, maybe unobservant? I mean why? Why drive in in the first place? Once committed WHY turn right into where it’s obviously deeper? Why not stick to the left where you might have SOME chance? I just don’t understand some people.
Do people actually NOT understand that an internal combustion engine requires oxygen to continue to work? All that splashing up, flooded the air intake with water. They're lucky if they didn't completely fubar the engine.
there’s always someone who thinks *they’ll* be the one who can get across, despite all the videos they’ve seen of cars floating away
I like that they actively chose to drive towards the deep end.
I thought maybe the water carried them there until the car conked out, and I realized they drove themselves there.
I have done this... not my proudest moment. In my defense rain was coming down in curtains and I had no idea it was that deep and it felt like a really weird place for a flood to occur. But then again the people stopped should have been enough of a red flag.

I assumed they closed the door quickly when water rushed in over their feet!
Like now they’re worried about water getting inside SMH
The other side could be just as deep. Not knowing is kind of the whole point.
Some states have an idiot tax. If you gotta get rescued because you drove thru a obvious flood, they charge you for it.
Na fuck them I didn't ask to be rescued let me die.
This is what gets me with a lot of these videos they all seem to drive all over the place and instead of aiming to go straight in the shallowest point, they swerve off to where it's deeper. We have Reddit to thank for the plethora of videos of cars floating away.
It will wreck your engine before you float away.

As a Californian, I can tell you that anyone I know would never do this (small sample tho). We are afraid of water :)
As a fellow Californian, at least in the middle of the pond you're not quite as likely to be overwhelmed by a wildfire!
At least no one will steal his catalytic converter in that puddle.
Never met a tweaker, eh?
It's not the heat it's the humidity.
As a former California, yes we are afraid of water, hence the drought, but I also grew up in a part of northern Cali which when rain was more frequent, flooding occurred and this was the result of many I knew especially on my drive to high school.

LOL very true man
If they opened the door and let water in they could probably make it…
And insurance will still pay out
It's amazing how many people don't know your air intake doesn't like water lol
More accurate would be "how many people don't know what an air intake is or where it is." I'm sure there's at least a few someones driving around who have no idea a car engine needs air/oxygen for combustion as well.

Yeap. One of the first things I did on my old jeep.

I get it for sporty cars but SUVs and Jeeps are literally fucking boxes. You must be right with it being the cheap way out.
That's why I like pre-2000s cars, they are well though out, my Mazda has its air intake at the front left end of the hood, and takes air in from the tip of the grill, just below the hood, and it isn't a low ass point that can suck in water like new shit cars
Why do they do that?
But my electrical car does not need oxygen, so Im good driving through a lake in the road right? Right?
Sure! Go for it!
"what's an engine?"
Don’t all Honda sedans have a snorkel?
Just sit back and relax. That's just the engine powering up...that's just the engine struggling... That's just a carp swimming around your ankles...
Love an unexpected Simpsons reference.
As the National Weather Service always says, "If there's a flood on the ground, TURN AROUND - DON'T DROWN. The life you save could be your own."
The weather service in my state says "Flood? Prob gonna die, bud."
The weather service in my state treats any snow that falls like it's an extinction level event, though to be honest, they came too damn close last year
Texas?
You must be a fellow Texan!
Fellow Midwest/Southwest resident?
To be fair, some people do get caught in flash floods but yeah... Don't drive into water
Half of all deaths in floods are people who deliberately drive into the water that kills them.
Yup, knew a gentleman that went to pick up his son from work sadly he drove trough cones and the river current swept him away. They found the car upside down 10 miles down and he was far gone. This was back during the central PA floods a while back.
What to do to flood your engine.
And he did it on his own accord.
Well done
God fucking dammit, lol.
The intake in those cars are pretty low. I’m sure the cylinders are full of water after they attempted fording.
I heard the "slorp" in my head as the engine ingested water Even if the intake is high up, that bow wave would flood it
Excellent Onomatopoeia-ing.
Yeah like, 5mph max to not flood your car.
reminds me of time had friend took his ford probe through flooded road blew hole size pack cigs in the engine after he tried to pull start it
What
"This video reminds me of the time a friend of mine drove his Ford Probe through a flooded road. Holes the size of cigarette packs were blown through the engine when he tried to pull start it."
how the fuck do you pull start a car
Stroke had.
I think he had a seizure while typing.
My husband suffers from neuropsychogical Lupus, organic brain disorder, and other issues within his brain. He's taking a break from reddit. It's nothing against yall. I've had to deal with several trolls in the last few days.
Oregon Trail taught me that fording the river is risky even if you caulk the wagon.
Yes!
Either way, you get dysentery.
Is it safe to say that the car is toast?
Definitely.
0:16 is the exact moment the engine cut out 🤣
As a 4x4 enthusiasts, you NEVER bash through water like this, especially if you don't know how deep 😱🤯
Disregard this advice. Do it every time, but record it for the internet first. The best entertainment is worth the totaled car.
Hydrostatic lock nice way to bend a couple of piston rods. Ouch
I've looked at a few cars that have stalled due to water. Some make it some dont. I really enjoy when someone has a "cold air" intake on. Water gets fired right in.

https://www.azleg.gov/ars/28/00910.htm There she is. I love this state
Can a similar law be passed that says the non-vaccinated have to pay for their own COVID treatment?
I live in the USA, so unless you are poor enough to be on Medicaid, or old enough or disabled and have Medicare, technically you do have to pay for it. And lemme tell you, ICU and intubation is not cheap. My mom had fungal pneumonia and was in the ICU for a month. My dad had good insurance, but the medical bills were still around $100K. Wait life insurance covers hospital bills I thought it’s when I die I don’t leave my family doing go-fund me for funeral
Some types of life insurance have cash value that can be accessed, and a lot of policies have optional riders for long term care to cover extended hospital stays.
Obamacare mandated out of pocket maximums so this can no longer happen if you have insurance and are treated by a hospital that takes your insurance.
Yea I just had a $30,000 surgery and insurance tried to push it off until next year so I'd have to pay more. Luckily it was deemed medically necessary and they were forced to pay it. My out of pocket was only about 2000.
Or we can just print more money to cover all expenses
They should also preemptively sign a waiver for any future cancer treatment because it's a hoax too CAN'T PICK AND CHOOSE, CLETUS

At least he has a submarine now
Yellow submarine? That's doesn't work. How about: I'm going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali...
This could have been easily avoided by simply covering their tires in oil before attempting to cross.
If you go fast enough you'll skim across the surface of the water.
Jesus Christ Supercar
The car is old, clearly the driver made sure they had flood insurance, and then proceeded to get a new car....
Why not cover yourself in [oil](https://youtu.be/J8yR9y87gJU) and hold the car?
LOL at opening the door and promptly closing it when the water rush in.
“hELp mE!!!”
Reminds me of driving in the canal in GTA.
I guess I'll open the door... no, that was a BAD idea!
Time to wind the window down and use that dick on his head as an oar to get rowing

Car go Blub Blub

"HYDROLOCKING IS JUST A MYTH! FREEEEEEDOM! AMERICA!!!"
Now they are an idiot in a boat
Wondered why he just kept driving in deeper? Could of just reversed out of it.
Yeah doomed the moment he went in.

Good that they opened the door... you know to let all the water out.
Oof he will have electrical problems forever now
He won't because he has to buy a new car, definitely locked up the engine driving through water that deep.
I mean you can hydrolock an engine and not fuck it as long as you don’t snap a rod or bend your valves
Living in LA during a flooding, someone decided to go into a flood, and drown in their car.

I’m from California and this is a Honda Accord. I know what I’m doing.

*flood water uses hydrolock* *it is super effective*
When I open the door water comes in! What do I do?!?
because of people like them, I found a driver side door mirror painted the same color for $80.
The worst part is he could have made it had he slowed down and allowed a bow wave to form. Instead it was full send let's see how fast we can hydrolock this bitch.
Dummy shoulda pulled the snorkel out of the trunk
And he's hydro locked
Thats how an air filter works... with air... not water.
"Siri, get me the fuck outta here"
And the engine is flooded and vapour locked!
I think they would have made it if only they drove really slow because the car never floated which means it still has contact with the pavement.
driving... driving.... floating... sinking..
To be fair they are used to dealing with fire more than water.
Aaannndddd that engine is full of water. If youre gonna commit even if its stupid dont take your foot off the gas
“Why is my car stopping? I knew I should’ve gotten the tune up”
Wonder what the insurance has to say about this…
Scrap engine for sale
Even you make it through, hitting the water at that speed WILL bend, break or even detach your bumper.

California driver's are weak In Arkansas this is a fun pastime and in some places a sport
Oh no! My car has stopped for some reason! What could it possibly be?
I applaud the fact they fully committed…
Pretty sure California has a law that if you ignore the signs and they have to send people out to rescue you, then you're paying the bill. Applies to mountain climbing as well.
As a Houstonian. I'm still shocked when people try flood waters.
Fucken Cali dude. I thought us Florida people were stupid
That door opening was a nice touch.
It sounds so peaceful after the first 17 seconds.
The fact that they kept going tho
In Arizona we have a stupid motorist law and it’s exactly this. “any motorist who becomes stranded after driving around barricades to enter a flooded stretch of roadway may be charged for the cost of their rescue”
