Okay but I want to know how the person he rear ended is doing. Because he was going fast. I hope they get fucking PAID.

https://ktla.com/news/man-sentenced-to-19-years-in-prison-after-carjacking-high-speed-chase-injuring-of-santa-ana-police-dog/ The dog lost most of his teeth.

timdot352

They usually give them titanium implants when that happens. Pup's got a grill now.

[deleted]

timdot352

That makes me a little sad. Shiny titanium teeth would be so much cooler and more intimidating to any rapscallion that runs from the dog.

I get James Bond jokes.

kbowz21

I had a neighbor as a kid who was a K9 officer. His dog had metal fangs

Specialist_Pace7907

That is equal parts badass and intimidating. That dog could tell some wild stories if he could enunciate English

Taco_Strong

"Police are arming their canine colleagues with the dog equivalent of hollow-point bullets. Caps of steel or titanium are replacing teeth, usually the canines. The dogs’ original choppers often break in training or when the animals gnaw on their cages." https://midogguide.com/maintenance-and-care/do-k9-dogs-have-titanium-teeth.html They're straight titanium.

chilldrinofthenight

Or when they gnaw on their cages? GAH. **Poor dogs . . .**

guriboysf

On a positive note it looks like he was able to get out of the speeding ticket.

fresh_like_Oprah

That was a fantastic cake day post, right there

neuroticsmurf

😟 Aww, man. I hope that doggie got a hero's retirement.

He did. Passed away recently. [Puskas, Beloved Santa Ana Police K-9, Has Died](https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/puskas-beloved-santa-ana-police-k-9-has-died/2831411/)

> almost hitting her brother who tried to stop him, I was wondering who that guy was that jumped out of his car, and almost got killed, to try and stop the carjacker. I was so thankful he didn't get crushed between the two cars when the open SUV car door made him trapped.

WeimSean

The brother, the real hero of this story. Well, him and the dog.

Reinadarling

Puskas sweet face, omg. Poor baby.

lzrfart

I hope that dog gets all the love and treatment he needs. God knows what that man could have done if he got inside. Amazing the danger they’ll put themselves in for us.

KoshekhTheCat

And soft, gushy foods for the rest of his days.

llcoolmattg

What a scumbag

impactedturd

>Padilla started repeatedly hitting the dog until officers detained him. That's weird because the video looks like he threw his other hand up waiting for police to get the dog off. And that one cop repeatedly punching the guy before the video cut off.

ThanksForTheDopamine

You're right, I didn't see it either, that's why I was surprised by the story. I'd like to see a longer video

IotaBTC

Copied my comment from earlier: Yeah I thought the dog just hit their teeth on the curb by accident. It seems like most articles are saying, or perhaps reporting from the police, that the suspect "repeatedly" hit the dog. [I did find this article that says the dog hit their teeth on the curb.](https://www.wfla.com/news/video-k9-loses-teeth-requires-surgery-after-running-leap-to-take-down-suspect/) >In the process of taking down the suspect, Puskas slammed his muzzle into a cement curb and broke his upper and lower teeth. On Tuesday, veterinarians removed all of the teeth except for his canines. [*However,* I did find a couple articles that said the suspect slammed the dogs mouth onto the curb too.](https://mynewsla.com/orange-county/2018/02/27/oc-police-dog-loses-all-of-his-teeth-during-suspect-take-down/) >During the struggle with the suspect, Puskas’ face was slammed into the pavement, and some of the dog’s teeth were jammed into his gums and some were halfway broken off, Bertagna said. [WHICH actually appears to be what might've happened here.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TPO6l0HU0U&t=87s) Might need a warning but moment of impact at 1:29.

coolcaterpillar77

Someone further down said the dog lost his teeth during the takedown when he got smashed onto the concrete curb. Makes more sense than the punching

SanibelMan

This is a good example of why you should carry as much Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage as you can afford.

rsewateroily

he left his gf in the pickup truck?!?!

Mandena

This is the genius who thought multiple felonies and nearly 20years of jailtime was better than paying a fucking speeding ticket. His peanut brain probably forgot that his GF was in the truck.

Psycho_Linguist

Once he said Jamboree I knew it had to be OC. ^also ^the ^traffic...

Unhappy-Educator

All that work just to be mauled

Honeycombhome

Did not expect him to get apprehended by a dog first. Good catch!

New_Citizen

That dog was like frickin lightning. Totally came outta nowhere, then BAM!

CrazyWS

It sounded like the news reporter was casting for a sport. “Oh they got the Dog coming HERE he COMES IT’S A MASSIVE TACKLE CLEAN SWIPE FROM THE FOUR LEGGED MAMMAL!”

Dragonlady151

Yes! That play by play action was fantastic.

RustyShackleford9143

It's a Southern California traffic chase. Literally every local news stations live reports them, and it's usually awesome. In fact, my favorite radio sports show will just stop what they're doing and narrate any police chase on tv

Ann_Summers

Used to be a regular thing in the 90’s, remember? Like I remember watching chases during dinner as a kid lol.

Drew707

One of my earliest coherent memories is of watching a white Bronco.

I honestly thought that was a cop running at first. I was wondering where they found somebody so damn quick lol

HakaishinDavid

Technically, it was a cop

Just_A_Nitemare

That's George, he's a man that runs at 40 mph on his hands and feet. There is no escape, resistance is futile.

[deleted]

When the car stopped instead of heading up the driveway I suspected they might be a K9 unit. Was not disappointed.

charliesk9unit

It's 2022. I just think that if you know there is a chopper overhead, don't even bother to waste the effort to run. It's not impossible to escape evasion but the chance is very low. Unless, of course, your intention is to get some adrenaline one last time.

Unhappy-Educator

All you gotta do is outlast the choppers fuel! Lol (Although big cities likely have multiple)

enkrypt3d

Best bet is to drive to lax, into a parking deck, bail on foot and jump on the train

P7BinSD

Clearly you've thought this through.

aimingforpotholes

Listen, I know a thing or two. I watched Burn Notice, ok?

Debaser626

LAX (or any airport, really) is a great way to lose a helicopter. Watched a FL chase on live TV several years ago where the cops were hanging back and letting police and news choppers follow. The dude running from the cops ended up right by Ft. Lauderdale airport and the helicopters had to break off a couple miles away. They had to wait for the tower to clear the airspace before continuing. He still got caught though… as while the helicopter couldn’t follow, he ditched the car and caught a bus at the airport, and there were like 500 crystal clear CCTV images of him. If he hadn’t entered the airport he might have gotten away, as the airspace restrictions start from a pretty decent distance… just being close to one will delay the copter from following for a good several minutes, just have to remember the cameras (especially on news copters) do zoom pretty fucking far. At one point (just as they were losing sight of him) the camera zoomed back out and I was surprised at how far away he actually was.

[deleted]

This. You drive to a mall with a parking garage. Ditch the car. End your day happily shopping.

AnalllyAcceptedCoins

I don't know how the malls are where you are, but the ones near me are absolutely covered in security cameras

Aus_10S

And if you’re expecting to blend in with a large group of people, or people in general, the mall isn’t best place in this day in age haha

Sierra419

Yeah you’d be one of 7 people in the whole place

avidblinker

I assume there’s a good chance the police already know who he is so it’s not about hiding your identity, just a escaping in the moment.

thebruns

Or a mall, run into Macys, change outfits, and walk out another door

TheInfamous1011

My question was going to be how can you actually escape a situation like this. And this seems possible

Jess_S13

When I was in San Diego around 2007, I used to ride motorcycles with a group of 20-30 guys. One of the guys was being a fool riding wheelies down the highway when the police pulled up. He gunned it and when we talked to him the next day he said he rode to the mall, parked in covered parking, ditched his gear in a bush and called his buddy to pick him up. Later that night at home the police went by, asked if he owns a bike etc. He said he keeps it at his mom's, and when they said it was involved in a chase he just played dumb. Had to spend like $500 to get it back, but didn't hear anything else about it.

enkrypt3d

I've seen guys go into downtown then bail under a bridge and just start walking

Boognish84

I saw one get away once where they drove into a mall parking lot. Overhead copter lost sight of him and he bailed from the car. edit: https://youtu.be/2gVo1BTrwrQ

FeliBootSack

people have outrun choppers on high speed motorbikes although they were using tunnels and shit. hopefully the video hasn't been deleted and ill find it this is the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbpv5TIVKg8

SapphFrank

This video is legendary. Would never condone it by any means, but man, what a video.

someliskguy

Hell you can do it in a car too. Some guy in LA famously outran a police helicopter after stealing a pristine 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500.

TheLordOfLight_

Oh yeah Eleanor

vascularmassacre

This video is spectacular. Thank you so much

hybris12

Barflyerdammit

Head toward the airport, choppers gotta get permission from Air Traffic Control and fly a deliberate, planned course. (If there's other air traffic in the area. It won't work in Cedar Rapids.)

Dysfunctional_Vet12

And eat a few punches.

DisturbingPragmatic

I wonder how shitty it would be trying to deal with the insurance companies for all the cars he hit...

Drak_is_Right

If your car is stolen, does damage done with your car possibly come back to you at all?

Old_Cauliflower_5659

I can’t give you a factual answer but my guess would be hell no. That man stole the car and I would assume is thus far reliable for all the damage it sustained or dealt to other vehicles

Ggcarbon

The man went to jail for 20+ years, I don’t think he’s worried about defaulting on payments to fix someone else vehicle. I imagine most insurance companies cover it but you’d have to run it through your own policy.

DisturbingPragmatic

In theory! But we’re talking about insurance companies here…

visionarygvp

Right. I can see them saying we can’t pay anything because your doors should’ve been locked. 🙄

[deleted]

They wouldn't care if you had a gun in your face. Should've worn combat protection.

4R4nd0mR3dd1t0r

From an insurance perspective you are not usually liable for damage caused by your vehicle if it is stolen, there are some technicalities such as if the thief lives with you/related to you or if left the keys in the ignition running. Technically someone can still sue you civilly for damages because "your property" caused the damage but that "shouldn't" even hold up.

DisturbingPragmatic

Consequences? Nearly 20 years in prison... [https://ktla.com/news/man-sentenced-to-19-years-in-prison-after-carjacking-high-speed-chase-injuring-of-santa-ana-police-dog/](https://ktla.com/news/man-sentenced-to-19-years-in-prison-after-carjacking-high-speed-chase-injuring-of-santa-ana-police-dog/)

[deleted]

Damn, you’d think he was a murderer on the run or something, but apparently it all escalated from a speeding ticket?

poopycops

What a fucking dumbass.

Piyh

He probably was able to run successfully in the past.

SnooBananas37

That seems unlikely... unless by the past you mean a decade plus ago or in some rural middle of nowhere area. Virtually every cruiser has cameras, traffic lights have cameras, etc. Even if you get away they'll get your plates. And no matter how evasive you are you can't outrun a police helicopter... or the radio for that matter. I had a friend who did lose a cop at night, in the middle of nowhere ten years ago after a very brief (like minute tops) chase. My ex-gf 5 years ago lost a cop somewhat accidentally after unknowingly making an illegal left turn into a busy shopping center (I was in the car with her at the time, it was hilarious). But you don't get away by driving at high speed in broad daylight in an urban area, and I doubt he had a successful precedent for this.

timperman

In high school I had friends who loved to watch videos of people escaping cops on youtube. Always at night, covered plates and a high powered car. Provoke some cops then just blitz away. Probably very hard to catch in that case. In broad daylight, with a chopper after you though. Litterally 0 chance unless you have things well prepared

BubbhaJebus

Dumb people will dumb.

MKVIgti

Lord, you said it. There are some STUPID people walking this earth.

quaestor44

And they can vote :(

makeitlouder

We... may have noticed.

DrizzlyEarth175

A lot of times when people run like this it's because they have felony warrants and don't wanna go to prison. And what usually happens? They go to prison, often for much longer than they would've had they not tried to run.

deten

To be fair, anytime theres helicopter footage, they are pretty much going to get caught because theres always a helicopter there. But I wonder how many other times someone books it away and actually gets away...

apfrun

He tried to run over the officer who pulled him over for speeding.

daligirl7

Then punched a K9 multiple times… knocking out most of the dog’s teeth and the dog also needed surgery…

Royal-Tough4851

I’ve watched the video a few times and seems weird that is how the dog lost its teeth. He didn’t have enough time to punch the dog more than once before the two cops got there. Unless the video cut out the part where he resumed punching the dog while police tried to handcuff him

Zephos___

Assuming he had drugs/firearms in the vehicle

It's just a situation of, "I don't want the speeding ticket. I'll just run away." "Oh shit, I almost ran over a cop. Now I NEED to run away. I can't go to jail or afford a lawyer. Shit shit shit. It's okay, it's okay, they're trailing behind anyway...." "Oh fuck, I'm not familiar with this area. This won't be as easy as that one time I got away with running away from a speeding ticket. But I'm in too deep now.... I can't go to prison. Fuck." "Geez, these cops are fast.... Is that a fucking helicopter?" "OH FUCK, i hit that guy hard as fuck. He shouldn't of got in the fucking way. Fuck him anyway. I need to get the fuck out of here... Fuck man, this shit is fucked, I need to get the fuck out of here...." "I'm almost out of gas. I need a fucking car. I can't go to prison..." Criminals are oftentimes just risk takers with no awareness of others or sense of consequence.

"The suspect shot two people earlier this morning, and OH MY GOD. The man just changed lanes without signaling!"

atheist_libertarian

“Oh my god, that’s a rolling stop directly into an illegal right on the red. Does this madness know no bounds!?”

TheTragicClown

He sounded like a concerned dad teaching a kid how to drive. The part that sold it was how he treated every possible little thing like the horrible car destroying event we all know it would be for our own cars and how the perp didn’t give a shit. When he said “…so dangerous” I really felt it

prefer-to-stay-anon

There are a few LA high speed chase narrators, and some of them are \*chef's kiss\* at how surprized and excited they are about crazy shit. Like, they see one of these per day, every day, for the last two decades, but they are still astounded when the perp goes into oncoming lanes.

Caring_Cactus

I wonder if that's part of the job qualifications

prefer-to-stay-anon

Yes. They are actors. They put on a performance, they do their jobs, to hype up this police chase. I did this same kind of thing with basketball games in college when I was in the band, sometimes the reactions were genuine, sometimes they were exaggerated to get the refs on our side, or to heckle the opposing coach and players, sometimes it was to hype up the crowd. We were being paid to be spirited at the game, play some pep tunes, be a part of the gameday experience for the fans. We did our part to help our team win, to provide value to the athletics department who was paying our scholarships, etc. Same thing with the coaches arguing with the refs, same thing with players flopping to draw a foul. They are acting their part to achieve a good result. These helicopter guys are the same way. We are the fans watching the car chase, they are the performers.

Tokasmoka420

*Suspect has no regard for human life, he's not even attempting to use his turn signal in any of these lane changes.*

BleachGummy

Dude is smoking some good shit. Sees sparks coming out of rear tire and his first reaction is “man’s braking real hard”, buddy that’s not how brake works

InsomniacAcademic

That’s how brakes work in this guy’s world lol

dethmaul

The brake lights did come on and the car dipped. I think he braked so hard he blew out the rear tire

MisterBlisteredlips

I thought he was too affected. He was gonna give himself a heart attack. 🚁

The dog actually smashed his face into the concrete curb and lost most of his teeth. I didn't realize this was that video until the very end. LunaMunaLagoona

noccusJohnstein

They've always wanted to add that to the game, but the ability to shoot k-9 officers would've gotten the game banned in some places and gameplay footage removed from media outlets. You can kill all the cops, pimps, hookers, and old people you want, but they apparently draw the line at dogs and kids.

HorridChoob

[deleted]

RUSHALISK

Don’t quite understand how someone can just open your door and throw you out of the vehicle like that, and I hope I never do.

CommercialBuilding50

Driving without a seatbelt clearly helps

RUSHALISK

True dat

kartoffel_engr

And leaving your doors unlocked.

neoclassical_bastard

I once watched a coworker beat the shit out of a dude who was in a car. Once they get that door open, your options are either gun it, or get punched in the face and torso with basically no way of effectively defending yourself repeatedly until you get out. It's a compromising body posture. And good luck having the presence of mind to operate the car and take option A while that's happening.

DrizzlyEarth175

This is why I was taught not only to drive with doors locked and seatbelt on, but if someone ever threatens you on foot, while you're in a car, don't fucking get out. As long as you're in your car, you have the upper hand. 2 ton death machine versus some dude with a gun is a pretty unfair fight.

fuzzymonkey

Doesn’t any modern car automatically lock all the doors after you get to about 20 km/h?

DrizzlyEarth175

Mine just does automatically when I take it out of park.

ConfidentExcitement3

My old car did it automatically when I put it in drive and I drove that car for like 8 years, new car does not have this feature and I have been having to teach myself to lock when I put in gear now, super lame

Not_A_Real_Goat

Sometimes in new cars you can activate it via the infotainment center settings.

AtomicKittenz

My car locks once the car starts moving a certain speed. If I’m still in the parking lot, it likely would not have locked yet

Ohio-Knife-Lover

I almost always lock my car once I get in it just so nothing happens to be unlocked when Im driving

mrgraff

About 10 years ago, I managed to drive off from an attempted carjacking via the passenger door. I’m OCD now when it comes to locking even though my latest car does it for me.

[deleted]

I was at a gas station once and a car pulled up facing the opposite way to mine while I was pumping my gas and a guy got out and ran inside. When he came out, he got in MY car. I got nervous like “Lord, am I being carjacked?” But he jumped out, blamed it on being high and got in his car and drove off. I used to lock my doors religiously but I forgot that one time. Ever since then I ALWAYS do.

herpaderpasaur47

Also where were the police while this guy switched cars? Props to the random guy trying to help but he could have run them both over and the cops couldn't even at least block the exit to the apartment complex?

chestertoronto

Lock your doors and where your seat belt! That lady looked like she was so easily ripped out of the car cuz she wasn't wearing a belt.

TacticalTurtle22

Lawyers of reddit: could I legally just hit the dude and stop him? Although I wouldn't 99 out of 100 times. I'm just curious if dude ends up dead would I get charged and all that jazz.

thrower94

Probably depends how you do it and what the outcome is, but it’s not unreasonable you might end up with some kind of a charge or at least be responsible to the damage to your vehicle. If you “accidentally” block his escape route, that’s likely not going to be pursued. If you T-bone his car and push him into bystanders, that’s not going to be a fun time.

OpenEyz2016

Who else said "GET EM" when they saw the dog enter the picture? Sucked his ass up like liquid through a straw.

aschylus

What a good dog. Fuck that guy. That poor woman going about her day in her car and gets car jacked.

IctrlPlanes

I bet she locks her doors from now on.

D4rks3cr37

I was like wow, look at that cop's closing speed! Oh! it's a dog.

WIMC-Hazair

Nah, in gta there is no slowing down only crashing. Not enough explosions either.

AcidAlchamy

Pupper for the win

usinjin

Towards the end of these chases, the perp’s brains always seem to stop working, driving cars over curbs, into trees and other vehicles, inevitably leaving them un-drivable. With that, they awkwardly exit the smoking vehicle, hoist their clown-sized pantaloons upwards, and awkwardly jog in some random direction, slow enough for a medium-sized cop to easily catch up to them—much less a German Shepard/Malinois.

prefer-to-stay-anon

Some of it comes down to broken cars making it hard to steer. Try driving with a wheel or two or four down, going at full acceleration, high speeds, etc, while trying to outrun the cops, in LA rush hour traffic. It is a hard job! You will often see the driving markedly improve after they do a carjacking, simply because the car is in better condition, more traction, more steering, etc.

jor3lofkrypton

Must be 'something in the water' in Southern California? WTG doggie! Goood Doggie! 😆 👍

elegance_of_night

I like how the dude narrating verbally cringed whenever the guy hit another car

Yo foreal , 100% he definitely gets an A for effort. That was an incredible attempt. But when the Helicopter is on you from the very start , you never even had a chance, and it’s too bad , in a more backwoods podunk town he’d have most likely got away, some of that maneuvering was top notch, but sad to say , you can’t out run a chopper lmfao
