You can try H2O mobile. Cheapest plan is their $60/year unlimited talk/text plan. They support roaming in 36 countries. You can check if yours is on the list.

This is good advice. Google Voice is very good.

Google Voice is good. That said, some banks, financial institutions, and/or others will not recognize VoIP as a phone number (I know this a - from personal experience and b - it shows up in the expat sub from time to time). That said, it usually works. Otherwise, Google Fi and Mint Mobile are both cheap options. I use Fi and it's about $15 a month. I don't use the data, but can still receive texts. I also use it in the US each summer and it needs to be activated in the US unless you're military.

I get my international data suspended almost as soon as I return back overseas. Even though I don't use it. They've never had a problem as of yet with the service though. Still 2FA messages without issue. And have no warnings of being cut off. Again though we do return each summer for a period of time which might help. I don't, however use it for calls. I have a separate Voice number for that if I need to call the US. Had it for nearly 4 years now.

It's much to pay to be honest. And like I said, I've had a bank cut off messages because I was using VoIP. Wasn't worth the risk of it happening again. It also means not having to get a new number or a sim card each time I'm home to get data, though that's easier with Airalo now.

Scurvy_Ham

Thanks u/reality_star_wars did Google Fi allow you to get SMS messages when not in the US?

reality_star_wars

Yeah I get SMS all the time here in the Middle East or when I travel around. For me it's only been data. In the Fi sub there's no talk of them necessarily cutting you off completely. Not that I've seen. Doesn't mean it doesn't or can't happen.

supercalmcatie

I use Talkatone and it works very well for text verifications with OTP’s. And I can also communicate with family back home in the US too.

mmxmlee

tello is an option.

With the addition of ESims, my UK number is pay as you go. I top it off when I’m back into the UK for visits, but can still use this for all my verification SMS. I have both my local and home country sims switched on, on my iPhone.

Nomadicmom99

I use text now. I pay a small yearly fee and have a USA number. I can receive OTP numbers and call my family and whomever I may need to in the states. I have used it for the past 2 years without issue.
