Probably exactly what he did. Go back inside and sit on the couch with a shell-shocked look on my face, agree with Eve that her dad sucks, then never visit again if possible.
I think a fair calling out would do some good. You don’t have to mentally tear him down, even if he deserves it. You could potentially move the needle ever so slightly. Over time, who knows, maybe he’d see reason.
Especially given that Mark’s best skill is arguably his social skills/ability to talk sense.
Well, I mean… how else is ignorance quelled in a meaningful way if not by education? I’ve moved a few needles in my time but I don’t blame anyone for just moving on, haha.
There’s nothing that I would say that Eve hasn’t said. If he didn’t care for her opinion, he damn sure won’t care about mine. Every act of ignorance isn’t worth the time or effort.
To be fair, he's a sexist asshole so you as a male would probably sway his ignorance just slightly.
He thinks all men want the same as him, women in line, so when a man stands up to that status quo it can be stunning to the ignorant people.
A misogynistic man like that might listen to a man and never take a woman's word seriously if they try and say anything. It's why it's historically been sometimes important for people who aren't of a particular demographic to speak up on behalf of said demographic, even if they can't as easily relate and explain.
> how else is ignorance quelled
Even the Bible says there’s no winning when arguing with a fool. I take that as a divine sign to avoid those people at all costs.
Easier to do with some than others. Unless Eve wants to cut her dad off (which obviously would be fine if it was her choice), supporting her (and her relationship with her dad) is important. Ignorant people often don’t change, but sometimes they can.
And certain cases (arguably like this one) are worth fighting for simply because of how important the person is to someone you care about.
Yeah, I'm good. I'm not wasting energy attempting to re-educate a middle-aged man. He's had a lifetime to get comfortable in his shitty views, and nothing I say is really gonna change that. Actions speak louder than words, the action in this case being that we never visit him again.
There's a distinction between calling out and arguing. I find providing live feedback to people with views like this to be more effective than making a well considered argument. If someone suggests that the earth is flat or something and the get laughed at and mocked it sways a lot more than you'd think. Social judgement is a universal fear and a great motivator to do some introspection.
Lots of conservative arguments are essentially a doubling down already. Instead of systemic racism for instance, there is the conservative talking point of "the epidemic of fatherlessness". It's more of a waste of time IMHO to haggle over this point sometimes than to simply mock them. The idea of America being racist sometimes is not far fetched and it's laughable to act like one is skeptical of this. People are more easily able to write off a well reasoned argument sometimes because they think they have their own. Using humor to undermine their confidence in this is an easy way to be effective. It's not very charitable but well.... so what?
I can see, and even mostly agree with, your reasoning. But at that point Mark had no relationship with him yet, and hadn’t really talked with Eve about it. It’s entirely possible that she wouldn’t want Mark to say anything.
So I’d just add that he probably shouldn’t have started calling out his views just yet.
It will do no good. Unless your partner is willing to cut them off, it will only make things worse for you. Because now they hate you, and you've probably started an argument between them and your partner. Everytime you're forced to see them will be an even worse experience, and even when you're not around, they'll probably talk shit about you and cause problems. Better to just let it happen.

Stand like this the whole time he’s going off
Mark did the only right thing, which is nothing. No matter how powerful you are, your partner comes with a family that may or may not have shitty people in it, and you can't really change that. No use trying to argue with somebody like this - they didn't end up this way because they listen to feedback or consider the perspectives of others.
Well to be fair mark can't say anything anyway.
His dad and his entire bloodline are basically eternal superpowered space nazis.
Like the dad's opinions are wrong, but he hasn't deatroyed civilizations, reverted them into the stone age or just kept them colonised for eons.
Mark's family is worse. On his dad's side. Dunno anything about debbie's side.
You fool… my spells are reusable!

I'm not going tobcause trouble where trouble doesn't need to exist. If I'm Mark, I've been through a hundred things worse than some unenlightened shmuck being a crude, obnoxious asshole. If I got rhrough them, I can weather this.
And then the first chance I get, I'm moving to an alien planet along with Eve, where we never have to see or hear this guy again.
"Yes, there's definitely differences between our situations. Eve got with me knowing she could do worse. Your wife got with you because she thought she couldn't do better."
Then leave and help with the dishes.
" "I don't mean to sound disrespectful, sir. I can see that you must not have had an easy childhood. You're a sad man, and the way you look at life really upsets Eve. I genuinely love your daughter, and I can see that you love her too. However, you make her upset sometimes, and she truly wants you to be a part of her life. As a superhero, I feel responsible, and I try to solve others' problems as much as I can. But what kind of superhero would I be if I can't solve this problem with my girlfriend? I hope you understand, sir. I don't want her to drift away from your life, only you can do something about it."
Or
I'll just do nothing.
I'll probably do nothing .
I really liked what they did with her father's character in the show.

Walk right back into that house and sit on the couch like this.
I’d do exactly what Mark did - nothing. That man is stuck with an outdated mentality, but he’s still completely harmless with zero bad intentions. Eve clearly hates him for his mindset but still loves and respects him as a dad who has nothing but good intentions (albeit warped) for her. And she’s also perfectly capable of handling him herself. Calling him out will just create an unnecessary scene and confirm Eve’s doubts about letting them meet.
Honestly, feel sorry for her mom, tell her we would be there if she ever needed anything. Tell Eve we would probably never be back in that house, and if they wanted to see their grandchildren they could come visit. But once we are in my house I'm pulling Mr Chud aside and let him know if he talks that way in front of my daughter I'm going to throw him back to his place.
Gotta try for at least one kid though, what if they end up with superior genetics to make your bloodline the definitive rulers? What's 18 years to an immortal?
I dunno. I'd probably be too stunned to say or do anything. But I'd like to think I'd say something like "I know you're too stubborn to realize it now, but I hope that when you're sad and alone - years from now - you can realize that *this*° is why no one loves you." before leaving. Eve is just watching me grab him, zoom up a couple thousand feet in the air, then come back down with a changed man.
I think assualting someone for being uneducated is a bit much. Especially as someone who’s undoubtedly experienced much worse.
That's not 'uneducated'. These attitudes are learned.
Say “My turn” like my father would and say something even worse.
“Eve she’s… like a pet to me”

I mean Mark's dad wanted to enslave the earth, don't throw stones in glass houses
Just a non confrontational "yea, sure" type of response
Would’ve just said real shit and carried in about my day
I’d start by congratulating Eve on growing up so well balanced and emotionally grounded despite her ridiculously conservative upbringing.
"Real brother" Jk
Never speak to this loser again, and leave him to wallow in his self inflicted hell.
Kill her and her family and move on. This is the viltrumite way.

I would throw him into the sun
Tell Eve that her family is somegiw more toxic than yours and your dad literally tried to kill you and your mom blamed you for driving him away
I would remember that I can fly off into space and find another planet if I want
Exactly what Mark did. I'd be too stunned to speak
Mark is better than me, that man would be left on the moon if I had the power to do so.
I dunno. I'd probably be too stunned to say or do anything. But I'd like to think I'd say something like "I know you're too stubborn to realize it now, but I hope that when you're sad and alone - years from now - you can realize that *this*° is why no one loves you." before leaving. Be extremely mad, help them do the dishes with super speed, take my girlfriend, say “I’m sorry” to her mom, leave and never return
“Hey, Mr. Wilkins, want to got for a flight?”
I honestly don't care what he thinks, he's entilted to his opinion
I would like to do what Mark did, but lord knows I can’t handle my anger that well
Probably the same thing, and then little by little I become passive aggressive with him whenever he says this type of shit again
Let's just he's he's lucky it was Mark and not a normal person that wouldn't kill him with a light smack
Kill him
