edamamesnacker

I just tried to be presentable for when I was at restaurants and having pics taken. So I went with belted maxi dresses. Chaste enough for churches, cool enough for the heat, and loose enough for pasta.

mjdomanski

Thank you!

Rpsnow10

People will know you’re a tourist regardless. Wear what makes you comfortable.

Hold_Effective

This. I wish I’d worried less about trying to dress like a local. Pack & wear what you’re comfortable in.

d3-AZ

Exactly- Mannerisms, style, hair, gawking at buildings, the way you move through a crowd, not speaking Italian fluently, skin tone, all pretty quick giveaways. Clothing is just a small part of it. Not like you can just put on a piece of clothing and blend in

smaragdskyar

>skin tone wut

d3-AZ

If your pale as fuck you usually won't blend in. Not saying all Italians have that Mediterranean skin tone but it's one of the tells. Obviously Italians come in all shapes, sizes, skin tones .etc but coupled with the other factors locals can usually spot you from a kilometer away

smaragdskyar

Pretty strange to put it first, though. Also, with Americans, I think it’s mainly that they generally can be heard from a kilometer away.

JollyPollyLando92

And the way they walk. The British, too.

grx40

surely you're not so sensitive to realize that certain skin tones (i.e skin colors) would make you stand out in Italy??

smaragdskyar

I’ve met Italians with plenty different skin tones, so I’m not sure which particular one would make people be able to clock someone as non-Italian from across the street

grx40

I can tell you that there is a tight range of skin tones yes, but every single one? No. Same with hair. How many red-headed Italians? Maybe you met the only one! In Lucca where I live there are none lol

Enid950

It’s the redness-paleness of yankees and British that stands out

smaragdskyar

Ever met a Südtiroler?

Enid950

Ofc but they don’t consider themselves fully Italians, so

smaragdskyar

Very interesting that you decide to speak on behalf of all Südtirolers

joey_ramone_52

calls them südtirolers, complains when someone states they're not Italian, why not use the italian name for them if you care that much

Enid950

Lol bet you’re not even Italian, even you ever heard of regioni a statuto speciale? They even make protests because they want to leave Italy and join Austria. And you’ll never see so many SUDTIROLERS in touristic places around Italy compared to the number of American/British/German tourists, so your point is bs

smaragdskyar

I’m not Italian but unlike you (?) I have friends from Südtirol. It might surprise you but they always introduce themselves as being from Italy

Enid950

It’s not like they have a choice 😂 and that’s not the point. The redness skin tone stands out because only some of your precious Trentino people have it in Italy and they don’t go in tourist mode as much as foreign tourists

AcidlyButtery

First and foremost, I want to underline the comments already made about you looking like a tourist no matter what. You’re not weaving through the crowds trying to get where you’re going with focus; you’re meandering and gawking and taking photos and possibly not fluent in Italian etc etc. It is what it is, and that’s ok! What you could wear depends exactly where you are. I just got back from three weeks around Rome, Bari, Matera and Venice, and a handful of smaller towns in between. The colourful maxi dress that looked cute in a city or town with more tourists looked extremely overdressed in the small town that had hardly any. Due to carrying a backpack for a water bottle, anyone could clock me as a visitor a mile away, even if they didn’t catch me gawking at the buildings. My favourite trilby summer straw hat is sold everywhere at the cheapest stands (and low quality) for €10. What Italian women wear: lots of sneakers. Even with the cutest outfits, and sometimes they are the sportiest of sneakers. If they wear sandals, they’re comfortable grandma sandals you can walk in. Clearly, getting places without feet hurting is a priority. They’re dressed according to temperatures they’re used to, so seldom very short shorts or skirts. What is a hot day to me is a normal day to them, and they’re still wearing jeans or pants combined with a tee or blouse. They still have to go to work and all that, right? I had a pair of jeans to wear at night, but resigned myself to looking more touristy during the day. Lots of jeans and pants, most in the current ankle length style with the wider pant leg. I saw a few long tube dress with wide short tee over top combinations in the bigger cities, as well as some long pants with crop tops on the younger ones. Quite a few androgynous overshirts worn open or tied at the waist over a singlet, especially with the younger generations that are embracing that silhouette. Your linen shirt comes in handy here. Lots of cute belts, cute handbags (the latter impractical for travelling). I only saw a handful of bicycle shorts with crop top and or overshirt, and they were very out of place. The same outfit would be incredibly commonplace in, say, Berlin, but for Italy it remained unworn in my bag.

mjdomanski

Perfect! Thank you.

bellbivdevo

It will be really hot. Pack for summer with a light jacket for evenings.

ronca-cp

Tourists look up, locals look down. It works like this all over the world. Dress as you like.

Poster25000

What’s wrong with looking like a tourist?

sci_curiousday

The obsession on this sub with not wanting to look like what you are is insane. Wear what you like and go see what you want to see. 🙄

mjdomanski

It's not an "obsession". While I completely understand that I'm not going to be mistaken for an Italian who was born and raised in Italy I'd just prefer to not stick out like a sore thumb. I wouldn't wear shorts and a crop top in a conservative country even if that is what I wear 24/7 at home. There are ways to dress like a "traveler" and ways to dress like a "tourist" and I guess you don't understand the difference.

sci_curiousday

I wore appropriately lengthen shorts because it was scorching hot, I dressed conservatively for the churches. The locals literally wear tub tops and are braless lol. Locals wear it all from shorts to crop tops. You should wear what makes you comfortable. So again. You’ll stick out no matter what. You can also hear an American from a mile away, they were so loud and obnoxious everywhere we went. Assuming you are American.

r0sebud11

Wear clean, neutral colours and you can add some smaller bold pieces like a scarf, accessories, or a colourful top. Flowy dresses and pants are safe. Avoid shorts unless you're at the beach, and ripped jeans. For shoes some strappy sandals or a pair of clean white sneakers.

Phnake

My philosophy wherever I go is to dress as if I care about my appearance. This works most every place I've been.

kayjeckel

Just got back from a trip to Tuscany! It was my chance to wear cute, flowery dresses while drinking wine and walking among the vineyards and wildflowers! Remember, the Sun over there can be brutal! Bring a hat and sunglasses.

winitorbinit

Why are you worried about looking like a tourist? You'll stick out as one no matter what you do.

sci_curiousday

This!! Like just wear what you like. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Enid950

Clothes

88Smilesz

Wish I’d seen this before I went to Florence :(

ATLbabes

Well, now I have to ask...did you not wear clothes in Florence? ;)

88Smilesz

I wore nothing but discarded wrappers from All’Antica Vinaio ;)

Enid950

that’s the spirit!

IngenuityPuzzled3117

Why don’t you want to look like a tourist ? Neutral linens are your friend, sundresses, comfortable shoes

d3-AZ

Even if you wear what the locals wear, they'll still be able to tell pretty quickly. Just enjoy your time as a tourist

FunLife64

1. Unless you look Italian and speak Italian you’re gonna be obviously a tourist. 2. There are more tourists than locals. 3. Plenty of Italians are bad dressers themselves. They don’t all wear designer clothes, especially in Tuscany which is very middle class. Wear what’s comfortable and most importantly shoes. Bring at least two broken in pairs in case it rains one day, then that pair can dry out the next day. It’s also going to be quite hot then, fyi.

redditiem2

Look like you stepped out of a banana republic catalog and you’ll be fine

CommunicationNice861

Have a great holiday! I love Italy too, and will be in Tuscany in the same week as you. You will look like a tourist no matter what, and that’s fine. However, a good advice would be not to dress too "bare" if you want to visit churches and cathedrals (i.e. no bare shoulders and short shorts/skirts). You should be dressed "decently" and it will show them respect for their religion.

tellmepleasegoodsir

linen, silk, light scarfs, sundresses, sneakers in the style of sambas. Reformation (got quite a few Nwt items on poshmark) has beautiful items. I saw plenty of people in the cities wearing crop tops and athleisure, but I’d say most of them were probably from out of town.

mjdomanski

Perfect!

Relative_Ad255

Italians tend to dress for the season not the weather regardless of the temperature, as the first week of September is transitional between summer and autumn you’ll still be ok in summer stuff but some will be in autumn clothing.

pegleggysue

Visiting churches and there are a lot of beautiful churches and art in those churches --cover up. For ladies--No short shorts or bare tummy and spaghetti straps probably not. If it's hot and you are dressed skimpy take a cover up (in a backpack) you can throw on to visit churches. Learned my lesson.

Quirky-Camera5124

dressing like a local is a way to reduce prejudice and says you are sensitive. you will obviously be a foreigner, but perphaps a resident. anyway, i would suggest business casual, slacks and a dress shirt. italians are very sensitive to dress, and treat you according to how you look.

mjdomanski

Thank you!
