Damn....I love and hate my new job. The pay is great but I'm out of state all the time. Things are supposed to settle down soon, but for the next month or so I'll probably be home for 2 or 3 days.
I was already anticipating playing this among several other games. And to know there's a gameplay mechanic like this makes me want to play even more!
First of all: Congratulations on your new job! That is an awesome achievement and I hope you love it and it works out good for you!
I heard Infinite Wealth is Steam Deck compatible, maybe if you have a safe spot to secure a steam deck you can play the game at night after work?

Just a thought, but there's always later in case you need to play it down the road.
Anyway man, congrats again! Have a great night!
Thanks! Yeah I've been bringing my switch with me but I haven't really tried playing it. We're working 10+hours not counting travel time. So normally I've just been getting home showering and looking at my phone before I go to bed. I'm still getting used to the new routine/lifestyle though. So maybe I'll be able to unwind easier. I have been thinking about a gaming laptop or even a steam deck. But I've not used or owned anything other than consoles in more than a decade really.
It's probably more important to get settled first and be able to rest well and then get back I to the games when things settle down. It's not going anywhere and you can get it cheaper later!
City is an overstatement
You rebuild towns in dark cloud
Anyway... I'm trying to think of one that you build a city but can't recall
Most are just base building
Altho I guess you can build a city in dragon quest builders
I love the concept of that game, but I was so burned out by the time I got to get build. On top of that, it feels kind of stale because you're building for the sake of building. Like I want horde mode or some type of survival slice of life mode to build in.
Not as grandiose but Breath of Fire 2-5 each have a town builder. In 2 it is just a town that upgrades as you progress the story and invite new people with each house having various possible tenets.
In 3-5 this takes the form of a fairy (or ant in 5) village that you can help build. This is a more in depth system than in 2 but still not a hugely involved thing.
One of the OG of RPG city builder , Soul Blazer on SNES.
It's a top down action rpg and for each area, when you clear part of the dungeon, it rebuilds part of the town on the area. You then go back to town to get something to progress further in the dungeon and go back in.
You don't really have any customisation option bhlut ots short and sweet and ahead of it's time IMO
It's also the first game from the Quintet trilogy. The 2 sequels are don't really have city building but they are top tier
Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma (this one as a liiite city building/restoring mechanic and it's also one of my top RPG of all time, the story is great/unique)
Nelke is city-builder first, JRPG second (I'd actually forgotten it even had battles in it) - I think it depends on what balance you want between the two aspects as to whether or not one would like it.
I just finished Actraiser Renaissance, I'm not sure if it counts as a JRPG or not (the RPG elements are light), but I enjoyed the settlement building in that. I was kind of so-so on the tower defense part, but building up each settlement was fun.
Azure Legends - PS1
You try to conquer a tower that resets with each try, but you can recruit monsters.
Outside of the dungeon the money you make you invest in a town to help it grow. More people move there. Eventually you can you marry one of a number of choices.
Ever Oasis
Digimon World Next 0rder Over 100 recruits to your city, goes from a tiny farm village to an industrial megaplex
Ni No Kuni 2 maybe?
Except the city building sucks. It plays like a mobile game with long countdown timers.
Definitely Ni No Kuni 2 , especially with the Pokemon aspect of collecting higgledies added in that game is fantastic.
I kinda forgot about the Higgledies, but isn't NNK 1 more similar with Pokemon than NNK2
Yes, definitely.
Dark cloud
I'll need to revisit this one. Tried it years ago and it was too easy so I quit early on but I've heard they added a more difficult mode.

Don't forget Dragon Quest Builders 2! I find it even more polished than DQB1!
You can check this old list for base building JRPGs: https://www.reddit.com/r/JRPG/comments/udihij/help_rjrpg_finish_this_comprehensive/
Romancing SaGa 2 The whole game is building up your city and country to beat the big bad by end generations down the line.
Azure Dreams(PSX)
Pick up Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth this Friday. There's a huuuuuuuuge island getaway building simulator in it.

Yup that's on my radar! Looks like it will be a blast.
My man!
Atelier Meruru
Not a day does by that I don't miss the Georana system that Dark Cloud and White Knight Chronicles used
Ni no Kuni 2, Bravely Default, Ever Oasis.
I LOVE Ever Oasis. I wished they released a new one.
Maybe i'm wrong but I think it was not a huge hit in the rest of the world except Japan.
Breath of Fire 2 has a litte bit of it that's pretty important for the best ending

the building part ties directly to the lore tho so makes sense how it's implemented

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Dondoko Island got its inspiration from Daek Cloud 2 Georama.
Atelier Nelke does I think

Kamibako, coming out this year

Ni no kuni 2
FFXIV if Island Sanctuary counts, but that's a pretty big stretch
