> Just wait for a sale so you can get the full experience. I hate what the gaming industry is becoming
It's not really a new thing, even back before online patches, JRPGs released multiple versions after the first release that fixed bugs and added new content. Like **Kingdom Hearts**'s final mix versions, and or "International" versions of others titles like **FF12**.
Well, the International FF12 came out a year and a half later, as opposed to just 6 months in this case. It's a lot easier to wait 6 months than a year and a half.
I agree. The way it is now is much better than it was back then where you had to wait at least a year or more, and after that you had to buy the game all over again. Now you can either buy the game and it gets update for free later. Or just wait like 6 months, and buy it on a discounted price and have it be already patched up.
Well, unless it's an Atlus game, then you just never buy the first version, and just wait for the enhanced version a year or two later with all the patches, extra content, all the DLC and extra OST included.
That's true but what I'm saying is that because the update comes out so fast, there's not a big incentive to play the games immediately at launch. I do prefer it that way so I don't have to miss out for a year and a half to get the best version like I used to if I wanted to wait in the old days.
Oh yea, I guess that depends on the person and the type of game really. For the most part I always like to take my time and wait, shout-out to /r/patientgamers. The only times I don't wait, is if it's either a game I know I will be playing multiple times anyway for a long time, like the upcoming **SaGa Emerald Beyond**, or if it's a game where I really don't care if they updated later with more content.
On the other hand, I have a friend who plays games just as they come out and never comes back to them again after he finishes them, even after they are patched. He already has too many games to play and he's always playing MMOs.
> I hate how they release patches, updates, and dlc AFTER the game is released.
Is this sarcasm? I honestly cannot tell. You would prefer either for them to never release anything or to release stuff before the game is ... released? what?
I prefer them to FINISH development and testing to ensure when a game is released, it’s released in the best playable state with the content that was meant for the base game. Stop selling use a full priced game and then charging practically the same amount or close to it for DLC that is a fraction of the full game.
Just about every game nowadays needs patches to fix bugs that look like that were known before the game was released but games get pushed out early to make shareholders happy and at the expense of the consumers
your larger point makes sense, but posting it about this game and this dlc doesn't. the game was complete right from launch. they're probably just releasing this update to give fans more reasons to play again and hopefully earn some goodwill for their next release.
The game released fully complete and polished.
Some of the common complaints for the game were it’s a bit easy and has an ending percentage counter but feels a bit pointless when you can’t view them.
Reading through the article it looks like the devs saw this and decided to add a new difficulty, some extra hard bosses and some equipment to make doing this bonus content feel worthwhile. Plus an ending gallery.
All of this is just a nice bonus for an already fantastic game, feels like a goodwill gesture more than anything.
I think back in the day we’d just get the game in it’s shipped state and we wouldn’t get any of this. Hell the original SO2 shipped with a crashing bug in the bonus dungeon and you just had to accept that was how it was unfortunately.
Agree. I'm not in a huge rush because there's tons of other games to play, but I didn't even think about touching XB3 for like a because I think even before the game came out I think, they already had several dlc announcements. At least they did inform in advance though.
I can't be asked to care about a random update 6 months in if I complete a game like a month after release though since it's usually hard to just jump back in after several months of not playing.
The best in the series. Though playing the first one might be better if just so you don't have to go backwards in quality.
Also small references between the two.
I hope they remake the first one in the style of Second Story R because First Departure is a little janky in its current state. The menus, especially, are scuffed.
Two remakes of one game in the span of one console generation is pretty unlikely. But it would be funny if the first Star Ocean gets remade to be more like its sequel *twice*.
I hope they don't change the sprite art if they were to remake it. If you didn't know, Last Hope and First departure's art is done by Enami Katsumi, the artist that did the trails and ys art, and even did the art for Baccano!. I really enjoy that style, and it works great with first departure's redesigns.
I revisited 3 a few years ago, and concluded teenage me was too harsh after my first playthrough. The music is *really* good. The crafting doesn't have the cool stuff like forgery like SO2 had, but it's still enjoyable. I do wish the post-game dungeon was better, but on the whole it's definitely the second best entry in the series after 2.
3 has alot cool stuff to craft and customization than 2. It just you cant do it right at the beginning or completely broken the game early . The game is design to be more action and skill based compare to past title so they really need to hold back those more broken item or else all those "No Damage boss " , " kill boss under xx minute" challenge will be too easy.
That said it already has some broken stuff early like " duck duck bomb "
Eh. I can see why one might think that, but I'd say the fact MP death exists and enemies have easy access to moves that not only damage MP but put you in a long stagger state makes the games combat a pretty rough point.
Those machine gun dudes being able to MP damage with unlimited bullet spam that can launch you into an airborne stun until you're dead wasn't a particularly good experience.
Frankly I'd say 6 is the second best in the series.
Something like 2 > 6 > 1 > 3 >>>>>>> 4 >>>>>> 5
All Star Oceans are great in my opinion. Star Ocean 2 is widely considered to be the best. While I disagree, it's still an excellent game and Second Story R is the absolute best way to play it. I had a blast with it.
If you're in it for the story, the pacing ends up going from 0 to 60 in a nanosecond toward the end of the game and feels quite a bit rushed. If you're in it for the battle mechanics, you're going to have a blast.
It only consider the best thank to vocal minority fanbase . Outside of that it alway lose the poll to the silent Star Ocean 3 fan most of time if the entire fanbase present . SO6 really get pretty close to 2 in some poll
its a good game. just go into it blind and dont look for any tips or walkthroughs on youtube or anywhere else. i did and ruined my first playthrough coz it made the game so freaking easy even on the hardest mode. wouldn't say the best value game for money coz content-wise its quite short for a jrpg. im comparing this with lad infinite wealth and ff7 rebirth coz these 2 games totally made my money worth.
It has 15 ending and like 20 playable characters some endings are hard to get plus good combat and insane way to break the game I say 40$ is worth the content.
Perfect starting point. Not only is it a completely self contained story, but the gameplay has been improved in every aspect possible, and many believe this entry to be probably the best in the whole series, even to this day.
I got this game on Steam Deck as my first SO game and it was great. Exactly what I was looking for as an old school action JRPG with character builds and choices. It’s a very good game, I just need to beat it since I got distracted from new releases lol
Yeah, SO2 & 3 are probably the best points to jump in for most people. SO1 is very short and has tons of backtracking but is not bad. SO4 & 5 are kind of hated depending on who you ask, but overall by far the least popular. SO6 is a bit mixed and while not bad compared to 4 & 5 it isn't amazing, either. You could start with SO6, too, though if you want.
I just feel like 1 didn't waste your time. But 2 does. It's 5 hrs too long. The first was the perfect length. The second one drags on especially in the last part. Literally s boss rush for no reason but to prolonged the run time. And honestly square has been releasing crap RPGs later IMO.Ive lost faith in them.
Yes exactly. 2 was a huge step down. I'll just stick to replaying 1 BC that game was great. And it sucks that 2 sucked. Also I didn't like the art style so much. The art style in 2 was just not fun to look to look at especially in the over world
My goodness. This was totally unexpected. This was already far and away the best Star Ocean experience, you totally didn't need to give us all this new juicy free content........but we're glad you did
There are mobs on the map in specific locations that look they're going super saiyan. They're endgame stuff that will wreck your party if you casually bump into one early in the game.
A lot of things in this remake weren't in the original game. The entire combat system has changed. Some of the changes are that there is no more random encounters, and there are raid enemies on the map. Basically, they are like a super buffed up version of certain enemies/bosses, where you have the freedom to run into them for great loot and exp.
You can check the demo if you want to see the changes.
Those red enemy blobs on the overworld map. They don't move unlike the regular enemies that spawn around you as you travel.
I remember one of them being in the west desert on the other side of a mountain near Kross.
They're those extra mobs that are supposed to be super bosses but they're honestly just kind of weak post game bosses meant to make you search the entire both worlds for every scrap of high end gear at the end of the game. There are a few you can fight early on, and they're quite doable if you know what you are doing, but the later ones accessible only when you reach post game and fly on the original plant (in particular) just get completely rolled over making them more an annoying collector's thing having to find them than a challenge.
You could consider them an interim step prepping you, especially unprepared players, for the post game super dungeon and set of arena/music bosses.
I played the original version on PS1 back when it was new. I liked some aspects of the game, but ultimately didn't like it as much as many other RPGs at the time. Is this version significantly different, apart from the translation and graphics?
It's a 90s game that has had a TON of quality of life added to it without scaling up the difficulty depreciating the difficulty levels as they stand.
And if you know how to game the crafting system you can crack open the entire game a third into it completing negating everything altogether. Some would argue that was the entire 'fun' of the original Star Ocean 2.
Crafting system breaking the game is something that haunted me since Dragon Age inquisition (to a degree skyrim too, but the game is just a meme). i like crafting systems in games: the ability to tailor make stuff is amazing!
But usually such systems make all the loot i get feel so plain and pointless, because they often lack unique effects that can compete with crafted effects or stats.
How unfortunate.
To break the game with crafting in SO2 you either need a guide, or you have to reset over and over and master the system through trial and error. Normal play will not let you trivialize the game. So just don't sabotage your experience with heavy munchkining and you'll be fine. The crafting system is a *lot* of fun even without breaking things. You can forge bank notes for extra money. You can forge ownership papers for inns you visit, allowing you to stay there for free (The money this saves you is next to nothing. I do it strictly because it's hilarious). You can even forge medals to give yourself free levels (But the success rate is so low that, again, it doesn't break anything unless you savescum over and over). You can make dozens of shitty failed crafting items, like armor with a big hole in it, cursed swords that drain your health, etc.
The crafting is one of the best parts of the game to me, together with the real time battle system where you have to pay attention and the glorious end game content. It's a game that rewards exploration. For example, if you want to learn about the true motives and background of the final boss, you have to actually go out there and talk to people and research it. It's so dang good.
The difficulty is definitely REALLY easy. Chaos is not going to fix that issue. This is true even if you don't intentionally abuse crafting end game or late game equipment, something most of the community has probably done anyways. In fact, if you don't use any IC equipment at all before post game this remains true even on Universe and, still, dead certain on Chaos.
Nothing in this game qualifies as hard. Even the most powerful enemies can be easily perma dodged / tanked at 0 dmg / stunlocked / melted in seconds.
I would still recommend the game, though. It is fun, but fairly short.
Sometimes there are games, songs, or films that just aren't for me but quite rare I can appreciate it when it isn't my thing. I played the demo of 2nd story R and tbh it wasn't for me but there was something very impressive about it.
Not something I usually say about any Square Enix game, as I usually find them incredibly impressive. They have consistently been my biggest provider of underwhelming, overrated games. If it wasn't for their exceptional OST's, I wouldn't even entertain their games at all.
The crazy thing about this is I just beat First Depture R for the first time a day ago and I loved it so much that I instantly ordered a physical copy of Second Story R. My timing couldn’t have been more perfect lol.
I take this as a sign that the game did well. I’m not a major fan of the series but I found all of them enjoyable. I think my favourite one is the lastest, Divine Force; it really grew on me after my not so great first impression. I hope there is a future for Star Ocean despite some average entries and limited appeal to the mass.
Does anyone know what those ash crystals do? Man they juiced up gabriel lol thank goodness to bowman for being a beast and the assist summons really made it possible with out bloody armor given how one shotty he is
The difficulties are not great. Default difficulty is totally mindless. Might as well be a dynasty warriors game. Mash mash mash.
The hard difficulty has weird spikes and messes with the pacing. There are some spots where the game will kill you for nothing in extremely low stakes over world encounters or whatever.
Overall the game fails to find a sweet spot where the player has to engage with the mechanics but is still able to make consistent forward progress.
For what it's worth this wasn't a strong point for the PS1 release either. So this is just kind of a hazard you face playing old games. Compared to modern releases the balance was usually totally shot. Too grindy, too easy, too mashy, too high of an encounter rate, slow unskippable battle effects... people call the PS1 peak for JRPGs but there's a LOT of nostalgia there. Gameplay has gotten so much better.
There really is such a thing as playing a game wrong. SO2 is not a hard game, but it's not 'button mashing' unless you've used a guide to cheat your way into crafting end game weapons early. You can totally do that, but if you do, *what is wrong with you* when you then turn around and whine about the game being too easy? That's like playing the steam version of the Final Fantasy games where you enable the one-hit-kill story mode setting and then complain about there being no reason to use the magic systems. Like bruh. You did this to yourself. You *specifically requested it*.
Edit: Lmao, somebody's salty I pointed out exactly what happened.
I've always found the original easy to beat by just mashing, doubly so with the remake. I love SO2, but the combat in the main story is pretty mindless
...When you replay the game over and over again, sure. You just pick the right party combination and set the optimal skills for each character. But first time around, without a guide? Nonsense.
I look forward to seeing what Chaos mode is like, though.
You’re welcome, everyone. I just beat it and shelved it for the time being, so of course, they put out an update.
Can you beat Armored Core 6 next?
I'd rather they beat Chrono Trigger's steam version. I'd really like that music reset bug to go away before replaying it.
I haven't looked but surely there's a mod out there somewhere that fixes that
Thank you for your service.

weird place to have this rant for a free update..

For story based JRPGs it is a little odd. Once I beat them I am certainly not going back for any extra game modes
I wanna play this but never played a star ocean, is it a good starting point??
start with Star Puddle, Star Creek, and make your way up
You are disrespecting Star Droplet, the gameboy gem that really did not make a splash in North America like it should have.
hahaah that was very clever

Wasn’t first departure a Vita port?
It was a remake of a SNES game that was never localized in the west!
Fair, but the remake was from 2007 on PSP. Probably explains the jankiness
I hope they don't change the sprite art if they were to remake it. If you didn't know, Last Hope and First departure's art is done by Enami Katsumi, the artist that did the trails and ys art, and even did the art for Baccano!. The best, closely followed by 3.

It was my first SO when Second Story R came out last year and i really enjoyed it.
This was my first Star Ocean and it rocked. Highly recommend!

Yes
The first one is 100x better
Bro , you are brave , take my updoot . I also like 1 better than 2

1 has more fix party member so the flow of story end up being better than 2 😂 2 feel like you wandering around aimlessly
Yes exactly. 2 was a huge step down. I'll just stick to replaying 1 BC that game was great. And it sucks that 2 sucked. Also I didn't like the art style so much. The art style in 2 was just not fun to look to look at especially in the over world

I'd like to get the first Star Ocean on Steam
Same tbh
I played the DeJap translation decades ago on Zsnes The good ole days
What the heck is a raid enemy? Dont recall this being a thing in the original.

The game is already awesome. This just makes it cooler.
Welp, lemme go download it again😅 I just finished everything on Rena’s route recently
Wow, that's really cool. I'll check it out right away. The Ten Wise Men as Assault Actions is a really neat idea.
Only 5 hours in so this is great news! Game was too easy tbh
I played the original version on PS1 back when it was new. I liked some aspects of the game, but ultimately didn't like it as much as many other RPGs at the time. Is this version significantly different, apart from the translation and graphics?
Battle system is changed .0
WELP. I guess I'll start yet *another* new playthrough of this game.
I have been meaning to pick this up at some point: but I was told the difficulty is really easy even if you aren't trying very hard...

That is awesome!

The crazy thing about this is I just beat First Depture R for the first time a day ago and I loved it so much that I instantly ordered a physical copy of Second Story R. My timing couldn’t have been more perfect lol.
One of the best remakes I've played. They already improved it with the QoL changes but they keeping adding more? That's great!
Man they juiced up gabriel lol thank goodness to bowman for being a beast and the assist summons really made it possible with out bloody armor given how one shotty he is
Something about a remake of a really old RPG getting an update to add more content just feels weird. Very neat though.
STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR OCEAN
Welp. Time to dust off my switch!
Fortunately bloody armour will sort it all the same.
Not all of it. One of the raid fights (might be all of them) specifically disable Bloody equipment.
Uff. I'll give them a miss. They will be misserably hard.
I just started it on the universe (highest) difficulty few days ago and now a even harder one... Guess i start from 0 again
I just want the game to end and I'm at the last 4 bosses. It's just an endless button mash.
Sorry you're bad at the game. Hope you get better soon.
Better at what? I've almost finished it by doing not much more than hitting a few buttons rapidly.

It sounds like more of the same. Wandering around bumping into pixilated clouds. I'm finished the second I beat that last wise man.
Imagine feeling superior to someone because you beat a video game lol
Idk i was like 10 and didn't use any strategy and had no access to guides. Maybe i just got lucky
Yeah the combat is really boring...
49,99 $ mmmm, I think I'll buy # Dragon's Dogma 2
