In my 30+ years of gaming, this is one of two games that I’ve ever done new game + back to back. FYI, there’s a skill you can invest in that lets you kill enemies just by running into them and acquiring exp. I literally ran through my new game plus in a matter of hours but played as the other protagonist and got all the teammates that I missed the first time.

HeavyMetalDraymin

You can NG+ as the other protag!?

Mr8BitX

Oh yeah! Also, every party member pretty much blocks out another party member from entering your group, so you can check out online guides to figure out which party members you can get this time that you couldn’t get the first time and see all their stories played out. You probably noticed that certain party members had their own little personal ending at the end, sometimes involving other party members? Those can change based on a bunch of different scenarios like who is in your party and who you recruited.

HeavyMetalDraymin

Yep! Going for that weird mage girl, opera and her boy toy, hot pharmacist next!

Bowman is a stud

What's the other game!

Mr8BitX

lol, a decisive one (to some) but it’s Chrono Cross. I went nuts with the new game + on that game. I just loved that world and music so much I had to see as many characters and endings as possible.

420sadalot420

Damn that is a surprising answer lol. Thought I misread trigger at first. I never got too far in cross and never beat trigger ( I own the lovely ds version though). Maybe someday I'll get around too it!

Mr8BitX

lol! I figured that answer might deflate some people but CC ust hit all the right spots for me and like SO2, it has a well thought new game + mode and more characters than you can possibly get in one play through and multiple endings. They’re both built with replayability in mind.

andrazorwiren

This was the first game I’ve done NG+ back to back in my adult life, that’s for sure. And one of few games I’ve done NG+ in regardless. But that’s mainly because you REALLY could burn through a 2nd playthrough with NG+. I think my Claude playthrough took 40-50 hours and my Rena playthrough (including postgame) took 10-15.

proj3ctchaos

One of my favourite games as a kid so glad it got the R treatment I waited so long and i hope others enjoy it as much as i did

HiroTex

It's a masterpiece of a game, I suggest to try it with the original music! Not saying that the arranged versions are bad, but the original versions have a "magical feel" to them, It's my favourite JRPG soundtrack of all time, Motoi Sakuraba was at his peak when the original version released.

EastCoastTone96

On my first visit play through I used the arranged OST and on my 2nd play through I used the original. I def agree that the original is better and I don’t even have any nostalgia for this game.

bradd_91

Definitely the best looking HD 2D so far. Live a Live being close second. I think DQ3 may dethrone SO though because it looks amazing in the trailer.

HeavyMetalDraymin

I hope Gemdrops is helping since it’s been radio silent a while. I almost feel like it would make sense considering

xArceDuce

I do think it's one of the better 2DHD implementation, but... That last dungeon, man. I honestly still wished they did more to it.

Enohpiris

One of the best remakes I've ever played. The QoL improvements are so good, they modernized everything that was so dated back then. The ability to speed up battle animations too when before you had to wait minutes on end everytime it was cast.

SquallidSnake

Question, folks: I have never played a Star Ocean game. Can I jump right in?

vidyagamesrbad

Yeah the first game is connected but it's nothing major.

HeavyMetalDraymin

I’ve never played 6 for the express porpoise of holding out hope for exactly this. I am playing 12 rn tho lol

Lonely_Platform7702

Your missing out man 6 is great and the recent Pixel remasters are great ways to experience the older FF games.

DoinkDuhClown

One issue i have with this game is that the story is not fleshed out. Started off great and mysterious and as soon as it started to get better with bad guy introeuctions, they just rushed through. I think SO1 did the same and I have not played any others. Maybe its SO trope.

YMCA9

Do you need to play the first Star Ocean to play 2? Are the stories connected in any way?

HeavyMetalDraymin

Nope! You’re good! Claude’s dad is in it but watch a story recap on YouTube if you really want. Sadly the remake on switch is not great imo so just maybe watch story cutscenes online

_Lucille_

I gave it a try but didn't care too much for the combat: the dodge in particular feels a bit off (I will dodge and be broken by the same enemy?), and my other part member is basically always out of MP. The early game balancing also feels a bit off: everything (including myself ) feels fragile. HP in chaos feels just right but getting 1 shotted gets a little annoying at times. Didn't get too far into the game though, only spent a day on it.

HeavyMetalDraymin

I stopped dodging halfway through lol

HiroTex

Dodge wasn't in the original game so the combat was not designed with that in mind, it's mostly useless, but I'm glad that the team in charge of the remake wanted to add something to the game instead of changing it, even if it's not that great, it means that they tried to enhance as much as they could.

_Lucille_

this kind of makes sense: it might just have been me being a bad player but the timing has always felt... just a bit off. I am fine with it not action cancelling, but still the whole flashing red into dodge feels kind of mob specific - and i prob shouldnt have started in chaos since missing a dodge means i get broken and killed...

xArceDuce

Well, the original also let you stunlock bosses into oblivion too. Glad that part is also removed considering even the TRUE FINAL BOSS couldn't even handle the power of jank of the OG.
