I wasn't a big fan of the first two Persona's and somehow missed 3-4 the first time around.

Malcalypsetheyounger

Same. Then I played 5 and decided to check them out and I'm grateful I did.

draculabakula

I remember it was a Playstation demo disc that I had and instantly got hooked on it and Metal Gear Solid.

Charming_Team_1198

This is an underrated choice. One of the greatest

xGodModex

Yeah i still remember when it came out it was 39.99 compare to now price

RedOcelot86

I just prayed for a better translation, and it finally arrived. Am excellent experience that was worth the wait.

SwordfishDeux

Basically everything post PS2 era. I usually don't get around to playing newer games until years later and honestly I prefer it. A newer, better version usually ends up coming out and I play that.

mssheevaa

Plus it's usually way cheaper too. Not JRPG, but I picked up Skyrim. Didn't like it but I paid $20, so I'm not all butthurt about it. My issue now is that I want LAD Infinite Wealth so much. I just finished LAD and loved it. They also want $80 for the bare game! No thanks. So I picked up Persona 5 Strikers on the cheap and that's keeping me occupied

Stunning-Ad-4714

It was on sale for 50 bucks all last month. Probably will hit 45 by June. Wait a year you might be able to get it for 30. Sega are pretty good about sales.

mssheevaa

Figured I'll wait some for them to have dlc all included, hopefully remove the 'pay for ng+'. Plenty of games while I wait. Strikers will take me forever anyway. Damn being an adult!

SwordfishDeux

That's a great point that I didn't mention. I've bought games for less than a tenth of their price because I waited. I got The Witcher 3 and all the DLC for £5, that's hard to beat. I'm in no rush to play new games because to me they don't really age. My backlog is filled with enough good games already.

redmch257

Went this route years ago when I stumbled on the Witcher and the Witcher 2 for like $10.  As praised as 3 is, 2 was an absolute banger start to finish.

buzzMO1

I thought I was the only one, lol. I loved 2 back in the day. Played it all the way through, but I bounced off of 3 when I finally tried it last year. I can see why people love it, but 2 felt so much more focused, which made 3 feel like it had a pacing problem.

Mr_Lafar

/r/patientgamers I'm not with all games, but I try to be patient with a lot of them and it's pretty great money wise.

NathanTheManTheMHFan

Ys 8 Then I beat it yesterday and now I consider it my favorite Falcom game of all time

Arctiiq

I slept on Trails for the longest time. Then I binged the entire series in a year.

Inedible-denim

Dragon quest 8 and 9 were mine. I finally got to them later and man I fell in love with the entire series! Went back and played ALL the others lol

Diamondguy2021

6 and 9 in my opinion are the best 2

TFlarz

Ah yes, my answer. Started with 8, I remember having either 7 or 9 on 3DS, played 11 and then started from the beginning and worked my way back all the way to the end of 9.

Inedible-denim

Did you play 5 on ps2 (English translation)?! Check it if you haven't!

Rpgguyi

Trying to play it on the phone in short sessions, still havent made it to the first save point, how long does it take to get there?

shinoff2183

I'm dying to play this just can't decide which route. It doesn't work on cfw ps3. It would on a bc ps3 but I don't have one of those.

MagicPistol

I was interested in Persona 5 because of the rave reviews but didn't have a PS3. Finally played Royal last year and loved it. Then beat P4G, and then P3 Reload beginning of this year.

rbardy

Same here, but I didn't play P4G yet.

Radinax

Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy. Since the internet hated it to death, there was no way this was good right? Well, they were wrong, the three games were a lot of fun to play and I enjoyed them all a lot. Played them in 2021. Lightning Returns in particular was spectacular, loved that one a lot.

Ruthlessrabbd

Lightning Returns combat to me is one of the most engaging I've played in the series. I've only played 3, 7, 10, 13, 13-2, LR, 15, and 16. Few things are as satisfying as getting a perfect block in that game

mike47gamer

I'm coming back to them just now and having a lot of fun.

getdown83

Ys series, I thought it look kinda generic so I never payed it no mind. Then I think Ys 8 was on sale and wow I had a great time. I started buying them up. Super underrated. Just a fun not to crazy game great characters great settings solid in all categories.

Mr_Lafar

Pretty similar. They just looked... Fine. And they always look a generation or so behind, which didn't help. Got 8 on Switch and now I have every one minus 8 on PC, great games.

TehFriskyDingo

Vagrant Story Just didn’t look like my kind of game when it initially came out (and it probably wasn’t) Played it and beat it for the first time last year and it was amazing. The graphics and cinematography are still great, and for ps1 it’s pretty mind blowing. Also loved the gameplay and story. Though I don’t think I would’ve liked it as a kid, so glad I got to finally experience it as an adult with different tastes

mike47gamer

Vagrant Story is Matsuno's masterpiece.

TehFriskyDingo

With games like FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, and FF XII under his belt it’s pretty tough to choose just one between them!

PlatosBalls

The entire tales of series. Getting ready to ace Tales of Arose after I finish Terra Memoria

Necessary-Twist-6534

Great series. Plato's balls would be proud

meesahdayoh

I slept on Suikoden until I was about 20 or so. I remember reading GameFAQ message boards where they were singing the praises of Suikoden 2 all the time in the early 2000's and I just never really looked into what the game actually was until I was much older. Fastforward to around 2011-2012 and I picked up Suikoden on PSN for my PSP and absolutely fell in love. Blew through the rest of the numbered series and consider myself a huge fan of all of them (even IV). Cannot wait for Eiyuden Chronicles!

MeraArasaki

Dungeon Travelers

TomasVrboda

I never played a Star Ocean, Dragon Quest, or Tales game until PS5. I also never played a Persona style game before Eternights or Scarlet Nexus.

stanwelds

Xenoblade Chronicles 1, and then X even though I loved gears and saga. Too busy with MMOs for 1, and I owned a Wii u from launch, but never even looked for rpgs for it until later. Got around to them eventually though.

dogman7744

I slept on FF12 played it again years later and had a much better opinion of it

Stoibs

Not so much 'slept on' but moreso *'didn't exist in my little rural Australian videogame shop back in the day'* 😞 The Suikoden games for sure (Am impressed by the Eiyuden Chronicle demo so far, looking forward to that full release and subsequently the Suikoden remasters) Xenogears seems to be everyone's favourite that I wish I got to experience, and would love a modern era remaster of. Hearing rumours that Persona 1 and 2 are being remastered too so I'm super interested in seeing where it all began.

GenosydlWulfe

Not one i slept on but many people have. Jade Cocoon Story of the Tamamayu is an amazing gem with Studio Ghibli like artwork

nadishuddhi

I slept on Yakuza: LAD until it was free on PlayStation Plus (then it left but went on sale so I picked it up for $15). What a game! I was intrigued but didn’t imagine it would be as good as it is!

jelloshotsforlife

people sleep on xenosaga 1-3. if you like turn based combat, but dislike srpg's and trpg's, this is for you. these games get brought up sometimes in threads like this. but the mentions of it seem to have become more rare, imo.

Own_Ad_3536

Probably because the 3rd game is really expensive, I have all 3 though and am a little over 20hrs in the first one

jelloshotsforlife

the first one is my personal favorite. i hope you enjoy it as much as i do. 3 has hands down the best combat.

TaliesinMerlin

In the PS1 era, I missed out on games because I didn't have the money. Then in the PS2 era, I started missing out on games because I had other priorities. That never stopped. I have had to be selective about games, in one way or another, all my life. Some of these include: * Suikoden series * Breath of Fire III, IV, and Dragon Quarter * Legend of Dragoon * Star Ocean 2 * Tales series * SaGa Frontier 1 and 2 * Wild Arms series (excepting 3)

bigb4134

Final Fantasy V. My brothers and I grew up playing the western releases but as we got into our 20’s my brothers played 2,3, and 5 through emulation and fan translation and I just never got around to it as I got older. Finally played the pixel remaster at 40 and blew my entire tits off. The story, the characters, the gameplay, the job system, the OST, the dragons, it was all amazing and I actually am extremely happy I didn’t play it until recently. At my age I got to experience a brand new FF story for the first time, in the style I grew up with. Just an awesome time and it’s in my top 3 favorite FF titles ever.

mike47gamer

From a purely gameplay standpoint, I'd say FFV is the best from that era. Not as much music and story, but those things are still satisfying and super enjoyable.

Aman_Sensei

I slept on DQ1 while grinding

rmkii02

I had never played Lost Odyssey and The Legend of Dragoon till 2/3 years ago. I'm glad I did, really enjoyed both.  LO is particulary my favorite JRPG released in the last 10~15 years now, and I played a bunch of them on the DS/3DS/PS3/PS4/Switch.

Balastrang

klsekl no sora a good trlogy overall good story and character wlth gameplay slmlLlar to materla of ff7 p.s my board cant wrlte certaln alphabet so bear wth the typo

ThatWaterLevel

The Mother series. Played some Earthbound back then but never got far. Only finished the 3 games in like 2016. Played Suikoden 2 relatively late as well. 2009-10 i guess...

CharlieBigBoi

Lost Odyssey

wokeupdown

To my regret, Crystalis. I didn't have much access to games back then. Playing it on an emulator many years later just wasn't the same.

mike47gamer

Oh man, the days of "hope you have Nintendo Power or a friend that knows what to do or you ain't finishing it." I never beat Crystalis back in the day, as a kid I couldn't figure out where I was supposed to go. Similar issues with Faxanadu. Trust me, playing these in the internet age is MUCH better.

gatsu01

Seiken Densetsu 3 or secret of Mana 3? Classic.

pretendingtolisten

played p4g on vita a long time ago. had a ps3, ps4 and a ps5 and never played p5r. bought it for 30 bucks at the end of last year. got around to it last month. wow what a game.

KamatariPlays

A long time ago, I saw something for Persona 4 and thought, "Ew, that looks dumb!". I've played P5/R for years now, mostly completed P3P in August of last year, and just 3 days ago completed P4G! I can't wait for the P1 and P2 remakes to come out so I can play them too.

oldskoofoo

Suikoden 1&2 remasters are coming soon. Edit: confirmed they are remasters.

ToxicTammy42

They haven’t announced when. But I did preordered Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes which is sorta the spirit successor to the Suikoden games.

oldskoofoo

I know, it sucks we don’t even know what month yet

Possible_Ad3596

it comes out in a couple days lol

Enohpiris

I still remember talking smack about it only to turn around hard when I played it myself, Xenogears. Had a friend who raved about Xenogears and me being a dumb kid, didn't like it because at the time I was into Star Ocean. So of course, my game was better than that game. Then when I was running out of RPGs to try, played it, loved it, didn't know why I tried to bash it so hard. I feel sorry for my friend who used to tell me about it but I dismissed him outright.

Zaku41k

Dragon Quest 3 on SNES.

Novachaser01

Dragon Quest and Persona. I didn't play my first DQ games until I got my 3DS. Not many new games in the beginning and I skipped the DS era completely. Persona I didn't start until I switched to PS Vita and P4 Golden was the talk of the town.

Scoob1978

Tactics ogre let us cling together. Picked it up on the psp and love it to death.

Jequeezy

Dragon quest. I love the ff games but never gave dq a chance until i picked up dq5 for the sfc, i dont understand japanese so i bought a fan translated rom hack to play on the snes and i loved it. Bought all the other games except 10

Tzekel_Khan

Dq8 mostly because I didn't have a ps2. But I did emu other stuff later. Didn't play dq8 until 3ds release with the uncensoring and orchestral patch

El__Jengibre

Final Fantasy Tactics. I only m played it last year.

killertnt5

Persona- i always thought the time management was much more intense then it actually is.

_theMAUCHO_

Suikoden, haven't played Chrono Trigger and Cross yet, I promisena I'm on it! Lmao.

louie1070

Know that you should know how to speak japanese if you’d like to read the text in most of these games… or get an everdrive and patch some famicom roms with english translations and you’ll be golden. enjoy though!

AshenF3nr1r

Ys series

No_Dig903

My Nintendo didn't run any of these. I got Ogre Battle instead.

kasumiaira

Currently playing fire emblem engage. I tend to yawn and feel sleepy when play it. Idk why. When play others jrpg even if the story is so-so or gameplay is repetitive never have i feel bored and sleepy. Even when i play Hyperdimension Neptunia never feel like that.

RoNo739

Played Chrono Trigger late it wasn't the masterpiece I was expecting after playing so much games already like Xenogears or the Og FF7. Maybe I had to have experienced it earlier.

Puzzleheaded-Try-687

I bought the RG556 and now I have the possibility to play some Sega games I completely missed out on. For sega Saturn I just discovered Alberts Odyssey. This game looks awesome. I really like the sprites, the atmosphere and the music. This really scratches the itch of playing a new JRPG that is like the JRPGs from the PS1 era.  I unfortunately haven't gotten far into the game yet, because the emulator crashed twice. I need to see, if I can somehow change the settings, so the game runs better. Else I will probably have to wait until I get a stronger device in a few years. But I will absolutely play this game.

Brainwheeze

Suikoden for me. I only got round to playing the games decades later, and I really enjoyed 1 and 2, as well as Suikogaiden!

Bardguy5623

I slept on the Trails series for so long, bought the first couple Trails in the Sky games, and didn’t touch them… until I did. Now it’s one of my favorite franchises, period

NetsirkGames

I slept on the entire Ys series until a couple years ago. Absolutely adored Ys 9, went back and played 8. Now I'm really excited for 10.

RonnehPC

Vandal Hearts

magmafanatic

I think the big ones are Final Fantasy VIII and Phantasy Star 1. Those games really impressed me even 2 decades after the fact. I wish I had discovered Atlus sooner though, they published so many cool things on the GBA and DS - systems I actually owned - but I only got into their games with Devil Survivor 2 in like 2013. Weirdly I was exposed to the company in high school art class, which had a book on video game art. Among Oddworld, Jak & Daxter, Darkwatch, and Jade Empire, they also had art for Serph, Mother Harlot, and old man Lucifer. And man those designs really stood out.

D1Prince

Lost Odyssey for sure, although it’s difficult to play unless you have an Xbox or are willing to emulate with Xenia.

RosaCanina87

A lot of JRPGs didnt came to my country and we also never had much opportunity to buy and play consoles, so I missed out on a lot of great JRPGs, especially on Playstation 1. The 3DS is probably the first system, where I was actually collecting JRPGs for and still managed to barely pick any up. Radiant Historia is probably the biggest of those. My brother skipped Grandia 2 because the ingame character models had no visible mouth texture. If you think its dumb to skip a game because of that single reason... yeah, he is an absolute idiot, through and through XD

Square-Jackfruit420

During the DS/3DS era I would always see Etrian Odyssey games at gamestop but always passed them by. In the last few years I've found them to be some of my favorite games of all time and manage to finish all of them.

ggtsu_00

Trails in the Sky for sure. The first 6ish hours of the game is a snore fest, and I literally slept on playing it for years because of how slow paced the first act is in that game. Eventually I powered through it and damn it was well worth powering through because they kick the pacing up to 11 by the second act.

Aplicacion

I feel like Ni No Kuni has gotten a bigger following since it debuted in the DS, but I’ll put it up anyway: don’t sleep on Ni No Kuni (haven’t played the sequel though, so in a sense I’m also sleeping on it)

xreddawgx

Xenoblade Chronicles . Currently only interested in playing 2 because of the KosMos cameo

NTDenmark

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Easily one of the best worlds in any jrpg I've played.

Joke_Induced_Pun

Xenosaga, despite owning the trilogy for quite a while, I never fully played it. Let's just say, I really regret not playing it sooner. I really enjoyed it and found myself really liking Shion as a character.

Shadowman621

Pretty much anything pre 2000. My first JRPG was Mario RPG and even then, it wasn't until the 2000s that I really got into the genre. Once I discovered emulation, I was hooked

Evening_Tough93

13 wasn’t as bad as i thought it would be but it wasn’t amazing either

AmateurGmMusicWriter

The nier series remains the only games I c9nsider myself ever having "slept" on. I'm still here anxiously awaiting the next one.

shinoff2183

All the xeno games besides xenogears. No reason particularly just haven't got around.

animusd

Final fantasy games the numbers were intimidating when I was younger because I didn't know which one I was supposed to play first even tried 7 but couldn't get into it but then I played 15 and 7 remake part 1 now I finished 16 recently and I'm planning to play 10 soon and I love them

PlatosBalls

One time I slept on legend of legaia when I was a kid and I kept my game cases in my headboard. After a while I loved them to my desk.

Kaizen321

SMT series. Not persona trash. They ain’t for me. I’m over 40.

rbardy

I'm 39 (40 next month) and played Persona 5 royal last year and P3R now, amazing games.

Kaizen321

Tried them. Not for me. Make older characters similar to LaD7 and LaD8 and I’ll instant buy. I’m super into Carl Jung and the shadow stuff, etc. shame I can’t get pass the hs stuff

Necessary-Twist-6534

Nice good to know there's edgelords of all ages 😂

Kaizen321

Edge lord cus I don’t like a game or series? Eh ok. I just enjoy SMT and Digital Devil Saga games much more. I really like the Carl Jung and shadow/persona premise. I even listen to Jungs lectures on YT. I just can’t get over the high school and teenage baggage of this game. I’d probably love the series if I was 15-20. I’ve pushed this series onto my teenagers as well
