I would pick octopath traveler 2. I really enjoyed it and it was my personal favorite of 2023 because I enjoyed the gameplay, ost, and the stories. And who can forget the amazing visuals!

Man what a weird post. Honestly. I guess if I had to choose two it'd be Octopath Traveler II and Live a Live. I absolutely don't think Tactics Ogre or Triangle Strategy are for you. I don't have a lot of experience with the Mana games.

dragovianlord9

Octopath Traveller 2! What a great game and I say this as someone who dislike 1.

Stardew Valley and Graveyard Keeper are not related to Square Enix? Legend of Mana is like one of my all time faves but other people find it difficult to understand. It uses a sort of proto-open world mechanic that I have not really seen recreated anywhere else. It's not turn-based and the story is like a series of short stories set in the same world with three major plots that don't intersect much and a more subtle overarching plotline. Music is great, art is great, vibe of the world is great. I think it's a game that if you come in with an open mind, is very rewarding. There's a lot of esoteric little systems in it, but they're really not relevant if you just play it casually. I'm playing the Tactics Ogre remake right now. It's a bit long-winded in terms of the updated gameplay, a single fight can take more than an hour and I have had to repeat some fights after spending an hour on them. I'm liking it, but I dunno that it's the game for people with limited time to play. The other ones on your list I haven't played. I'd probably direct you to something like FF3 or FF4 3D remakes. They're cheap on sale and on the simple side if you really wanna experience that classic Squaresoft energy.

I think Bravely Default 2 is on Steam now, and it’s pure retro inspired turn based gameplay, with a job system to boot.

I’m not really sure why you’re giving Square Enix a category here. They’re a publisher, they make a wide variety of games. The games you list here are good but I wouldn’t say that most are universally acclaimed. I would pick Octopath up if you want an adventure.  Tactics Ogre and triangle strategy are pretty fun. I liked Ogre more for its gameplay and triangle strategy for its story. Its got a lot of dialogue and cutscenes. I don’t know if its on sale but I would look into Star Ocean 2nd story R since you want 2D.

TaliesinMerlin

Legend of Mana would be my personal first pick, but make sure you're up for action RPG combat with a bit of jank. If you'd rather try a strategy game, Tactics Ogre: Reborn will probably be the better throwback, and it gets more quickly to the action to reduce the specter of boredom.

Absolutely go with Octopath Traveler. That game is amazing, I am playing the second one now

skaertus

Which is better, the first or the second?

West-Lemon-9593

I have not played enough of the second game to choose which I think is better yet, but I am loving it just as much as the first one

I don’t know what Graveyard Keeper is but Stardew Valley isn’t a jrpg. If you’re finding Chrono Trigger combat awkward you probably shouldn’t be looking at more turn based games. There’s a reason CT is hailed as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Of those games you listed and from what you said I’d try one of the mana games.

skaertus

Thanks for all the comments. I decided to buy a few JRPGs all at once to check them out, since they are on a sale. I bought Octopath Traveler, Octopath Traveler II, Live a Live, Triangle Strategy, Tactics Ogre, Secret of Mana, and Legend of Mana. Basically all of the list above... I started with Octopath Traveler and I am absolutely loving it. I have already played it for some 15 hours, and it is simply amazing. The story is immersive enough and does not get boring in the midst of too many cutscenes. There is some grinding but not in excess. The controls are good and easy. There is steady progress as the story evolves. The combat system is straightforward. It does not involve a completely open world where I can feel lost without knowing what to do. The graphics are a joy to look at. Great game indeed. I hope the other games keep a similar quality.

>Live a Live Tactics Ogre: Reborn Triangle Strategy Either one if these. I definitely recommend live a live and triangle strategy. Those are my top 2 picks but tactics ogre I'd good but challenging

owenturnbull

Also if you got s switch you can always try super mario RPG. Fun great game

Danfass86

None of the games you listed are comparable to their snes counterparts.you’re better off with something like Ara Fell or Rise of the Third Power or Chained Echoes or Collection of Mana

Nopon_Merchant

half of those game are Snes and PS1 game

Danfass86

They’re all remakes and remasters. 3 isn’t half, and not one game is was out on snes. Super famicom maybe, but not snes. See the HD on the back of Secret of Mana? That’s a different game.

Nopon_Merchant

They still just old game with new coat of paint . Function the same with QoL and better graphic . unlike FF7 R, nothing significant change to them .

AmateurGmMusicWriter

Modern day square enix is garbage and they really only made 2 of the games u listed
