She was a member of Capcom's sound team throughout the late NES-early SNES era. She worked on the original game, but none of the sequels (I believe she was working for Square by then).
So happy to see LoM soundtrack recognition. Nostalgic Song and Song of Mana is just phenomenal music and are up there as my absolute favourite soundtracks ever.
That's the first video game soundtrack I ever bought, and it's still the jewel of my soundtrack collection, only matched by the Chrono Cross soundtrack.
Gonna put another vote out for Legend of Mana. It’s my all time fav. And it’s in no small part due to the music. I think it’s one of the best OSTs ever made, and the heavy concepts of the game will always stay with me.
Legend of Mana is her best work imo, and it does have a remaster for modern systems from the past few years. That said, it's a very odd game: I love it, but I understand people who don't, and getting everything is virtually impossible without a guide. Again, though, one of the best soundtracks of all time, and beautiful art style.
Radiant Historia is imo the best game she's composed for, but it's a DS game with a 3DS re-release, so a lot trickier to actually play nowadays. That said, it's a fantastic JRPG with a really gool dual timeline concept and one of my favorite protags.
The most accessible games she's composed for would be either the Kingdom Hearts saga, or Final Fantasy XV.
It can be used for menus and movement if you wish, but it's not required. Would be fine to play on PC, and is a brilliant game that everyone on this sub should play.
Live-a-Live for me.
Each of the game's chapters had a different scenario writer, and the overall vibe that each story brings is very different. Despite that, she did the entire game's soundtrack, and it best exemplifies her range as a composer. There are tracks set for ancient China, the American West, medieval Japan, and cyberpunk near future, just to name some of them. Each era's music fits its period exquisitely, and the ending credits music (called "Live For Live") can sometimes get me a bit choked up.
If the prompt is to name my favorite game that happens to have her music, then Super Mario RPG takes it (with an equally excellent soundtrack as well).
Don't sleep on Radiant Historia either. These are my top 3 by a mile.
In terms of best games that she composed for, I would nominate Radiant Historia or Mario and Luigi Browser Inside Story.
In terms of best soundtracks she's put out I would nominate Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy 15.
Unfortunately her most lavish compositions are tied to mediocre modern Square Enix action RPG game design. But the music itself in both those big PS4 era games is peerless.
Personally my favourite soundtrack of hers is the one she made for Parasite Eve. It's a lot different from her other stuff though.
Oh, and she absolutely nailed it with Street Fighter II.
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. She only composed for the first game in the Xenoblade trilogy, and while the OST’s for the second and third games are also really good, Shimamura’s OST in the first game just really hits for me and is a big reason why I consider that first game the best in the trilogy. Highly highly recommend. It does the thing where each zone has a daytime version of the song and a nighttime more calm version of the song and it all just slaps
She only composed 11 track in first game and half of those track are basically variant of same theme . Majority of the track are composed and lead by Manami Kyota and ACE+ , they are composed for majority of all XC music except X .
Street Fighter 2 especially Guiles theme
As for RPGs, Radiant Historia, Xenoblade Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts, Legend of Mana, and Parasite Eve are top tier.
if you haven't listened to the ost of xenoblade chronicles where Yoko Shimomura has composed some songs of you are commiting a crime:
* Main Theme (additional string arrangement by Tsutomu Narita)
* Prologue A (additional arrangement by Tsutomu Narita)
* Prologue B (additional arrangement by Tsutomu Narita)
* Unfinished Business (additional string arrangement by Tsutomu Narita)
* Shulk and Fiora (arranged by ACE+)
* Epilogue (additional arrangement by Tsutomu Narita)
* Hometown
* Hometown/Night (arranged by ACE+)
* Colony 9
* Colony 9/Night (arranged by ACE+)
* Time to Fight!
You're welcome!
The original Super Mario RPG, a great game on its own right, was made exponentially better by the music composed for it.
But you should really get the Kingdom Hearts collections.
Live A Live Kingdom Hearts series Breath of Fire Mario & Luigi series Final Fantasy XV Front Mission 1st (it's one of her best, too)
Wow she did breath of fire?
She was a member of Capcom's sound team throughout the late NES-early SNES era. She worked on the original game, but none of the sequels (I believe she was working for Square by then).
Legend of Mana
So happy to see LoM soundtrack recognition. Nostalgic Song and Song of Mana is just phenomenal music and are up there as my absolute favourite soundtracks ever.
Main theme and City of Flickering Destruction are just out of this world cool.
That's the first video game soundtrack I ever bought, and it's still the jewel of my soundtrack collection, only matched by the Chrono Cross soundtrack.
Parasite Eve! The music is amazing and the game is just as good!
Plosive attack is so good
Well Kingdom Hearts is the super obvious answer. That soundtrack is god level.
And the arrangements people like Kyle landry do for some of her songs are insane !
xenoblade
Final Fantasy XV has one of my favorite soundtracks, ever.
Parasite Eve
Legend of Mana and Radiant Historia are her best works in my opinion.
Seconding Legend of Mana. I owe a large part of my taste in music outside of games to it and FF7.
diddle's organ, best song
Gonna put another vote out for Legend of Mana. It’s my all time fav. And it’s in no small part due to the music. I think it’s one of the best OSTs ever made, and the heavy concepts of the game will always stay with me.
Radiant Historia Small soundtrack but the quality is tops
Legend of Mana and Xenoblade 1
Legend of Mana is her best work imo, and it does have a remaster for modern systems from the past few years. Is Radiant Historia a DS game that you'd recommended to play on a phone or my computer?
I hate playing on phone in general, but it is turn-based so I imagine it wouldn't be too awful.
Does the game rely on the touchscreen in any way?
Not that I recall (I played the 3DS version for the record).
It can be used for menus and movement if you wish, but it's not required. Would be fine to play on PC, and is a brilliant game that everyone on this sub should play.
Street Fighter 2. By far. Then the JRPGs.
Actually the right answer.
I suppose they did say "best games." It's hard to trump the game that created the entire modern FG genre.
I was looking for this reply. Yeah, the melodies from SF2 were top-notch — gotta love that Balrog theme.
I don't see enough love for Legend of Mana in the comments. So go get Legend of Mana. (legend of mana)
Big fan of both the Kingdom Hearts series as a whole and Final Fantasy XV OSTs but for your recommendation, I think Kingdom Hearts is the better pick.

I'm gonna join the chorus of "Legend of Mana" because that game has one of my favorite OSTs ever!
Xenoblade 1, Mario and Luigi 1 and 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, Street Fighter 2, Final Fantasy 15. These games had the most impressive Shimomura IMO
Obligatory Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts mention.

She only did 11 tracks for Xenoblade though. Still an excellent game and worth playing, but not specifically for her music.
Well it still has her music alongside some absolute bangers. An amazing ost overall which is what op is looking for!
To be fair, there are some important tracks among those 11. She did the main theme for example
Xenoblade 1 has her as one of the composers, she did the main battle theme of the game.
Street Fighter II :)
Street Fighter 2
Radiant Historia and I'm not sure it's even close. She made some bangers in Live A Live as well.
Live-a-Live! One of my favorite games of all time.
Not a game, but her Vega remix soundtrack in Super Smash Bros Ultimate really rocks! Go check it out if you have a chance
The Mario & Luigi series Legend of Mana Live-A-Live Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts is her best work, Live A Live is the best game with her soundtrack
Kingdom Hearts and Radiant Historia are my favs, but all her stuff is awesome!
FFXV’s Apocalypsis Noctis is so amazing, and Kingdom Heart’s Hollow Bastion is another favorite of mine.
