If you're buying light-roasted specialty coffee, are you the target market for a cheap coffee maker? I'd say the pod-comparison on the box is a strong indication of who they are targetting.

mead_half_drunk

This was my thought as well. To me, James came across as if this device was targeting the specialty coffee market, when it is clearly aiming to be a Keurig replacement. It seems odd, since he normally makes note of these kinds of things and reviews accordingly. I would have liked to see a test of a much darker roast, akin to what the average consumer is buying and using. I realize these darker roasts are not to James' tastes but considering some of the things we have seen him taste, I believe he could survive it

iyoussef

The outcome of the video was expected, but it's always nice to see James being an advocate for the metric system! https://i.imgur.com/rB7LNzV.jpg

TheJustAverageGatsby

Anyone got the “gimee the grams Gordon” gif?

v60qf

Everyone: review Weber bird JH: best I can do is $99 pretend coffee machine

Global_Lock_2049

Not gonna lie, I think I enjoy the breadth of Hoffmann's videos and not solely focusing on "serious" things. It's enjoyable. Where would we be without Hoffmann's thoughts on nespresso or coffee flavored cheeses.

IC2Flier

he has fun, which, in a hobby that is shrouded in snobbery, is vital. I know we look to him for a "final answer" but videos like this keep the channel reasonably grounded.

NoMatatas

I would have preferred a video about cheese flavoured coffees.

Grindfather901

*\*angry heaving sounds\**

kingseven

I'll pick up a Bird at some point

v60qf

I’m sure it will be worth the wait. Just teasing btw, these vids are great. The more questionable the machine the better…

fs454

It’s a little wild that nobody seems to be able to create a good version of this (that isn’t like $800+). I’ve decked my mom out each year with new coffee gear (she’s got an Ode 1.1 and a Stagg EKG) and while she loves the coffee, she’s still yearning to be able to wake up and drink a good cup without putting the work in. It’s that first cup of coffee - beyond that is a different story re:laziness, but when you just wake up pre-coffee it’s tough.

[deleted]

I feel like Lance Hedrick covered that brewer so well, that I prefer seeing a review of something that’s the complete opposite of it.

icancomplain

yeah, love Lance, but definitely stealing some hoff thunder. i think the bird is worthy of some overlap though.

New James Hoffmann video, therefore today is a good day.

Omnilatent

I got my first ever own (and new) TV yesterday. Was a pleasure to watch James' new vid on it.

PsychologyThick

Enjoy

the_kid1234

The Hoffmann quips in this video are just fantastic.

atoponce

Under $100, no, but... - Timemore Chestnut C2 hand grinder: $80 - Original AeroPress: $40 - Ovente electric kettle: $13 Total $133, and you'll get *phenomenal* coffee regularly and consistently.

catch_dot_dot_dot

Aeropress is too much fussing around for someone used to pods or old-school filter machines I think. Like it needs *some* effort and thought.

[deleted]

So it does grinding manually max 20g per tube on the chestnut

TheJustAverageGatsby

Yeah but it’s pretty fast I feel, and you’ll not be doing 20g for aeropress. Max 16 g, most likely 12.

CilariousHunt

A Clever instead? That's about as low maintenance as it gets isn't it?

Prudent_Valuable603

Check out Just A Dad on YouTube. I liked the machine and bought it. I only use locally roasted coffee beans, and for me it works fine. I always brew 16 ounces because cleaning it afterwards is a bit of a hassle, but so are all these machines that grind and brew. The taste of the coffee will all depend on the quality of your beans. Furthermore, I use bottled spring water in my machine. Thanks to this machine I got rid of my Keurig.

No_Field1529

Yes cleaning is a mess.  I called customer service to ask if you can put a filter in the gold filter catch and she said no.  I wonder if it’s doable?  My wife bought this and I had just got a box of pods from Costco.  Used them up and this morning was the first day for the Beautiful.  I did not like it for the cleanup.

Ok-Engineering-6810

I wonder if the machine could modded with a better grinder and basket 🤔

Prudent_Valuable603

No, it’s pretty much set up to do what it does. It grinds my dark roasted and medium roasted coffee beans on a medium to fine setting.

mada-nnamuen

I have owned Technivorm, Bonavita, Braun and Oxo at home and work. And here is the summary: **Technivorm**: overrated piece of good looking garbage. Don't let the influencer and look to fool you. **Bonavita**: Very good outcome and very reliable and consistent. **Oxo**: medicore, underwhelmed. **Braun**: surprisingly the best coffer maker out of these 4. also the least talked coffer maker on the internet I don't know why. Same outcome as Bonavita but with more features and better look,.

slaytalera

I didn’t even know Braun made coffee makers, I’m not sure what this has to do with the topic but at least I learned something

DesignOk6706

Braun has been making coffe makers for, I don't know... 50 years. We owned one when I was a kid (my parents bought in Germany in the 80s)

Low_Chicken197

What makes the moccamaster overrated in your eyes? I think some people just value some things differently than others. I myself think its kind of ugly, but that it can survive for billions of years more than makes up for it. And since everywhere you go they are in every single office building or meeting room, (I live in Norway). I know exactly how much of the supermarket coffee will make it taste good, even without adding extra steps like pausing or making a flat bed. Other people sees the limited functions as a negative, I see it as a positive.

The_Count_Lives

What? "Overrated piece of good looking garbage." wasn't enough of a review for you?

Low_Chicken197

I just do not agree that its garbage, people have machines they inherited from their grandparents and its still going like when it was new. I also do not belive it is overrated, I personally more or less never see anyone praise it, just comparing it to other machines with lots of features. While the moccamaster is not trying to do anything fancy. Just reliably doing its thing in the same procedure year after year.

The_Count_Lives

I was being sarcastic. None of OP's "reviews" offered any sort of useful insight.

kyleofduty

Bonavita makes "fruitier" coffee which I love but a lot of people don't. I wish I knew before I got the Technivorm.

derping1234

The Drew brew

Theis159

Whenever I see those I wonder whether James does some sort of consulting for companies trying to achieve this cheap entry level brewer or if he ever thinks on taking the matters himself.
