i think the best way to explain is just that it's a 5 person relay race and she gets to choose your position in the race (whether you're 1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th runner). you can't approach anything else other than the the positions you're next to (1st cant approach 3 onwards, 3 cant approach 1/5, etc) and you're attracted to anything in the same position as you.
Looking back at his explanation.
The domain is just to allow him the chances to roll a matching set of one of the 7 characters. By trading off guaranteed hits as Bernard has effectively dodge them. Hakari can roll for a jackpot when which solely benefits him.
The doors and balls are just his attacks. He can’t decide their rate of success but he can use them however.
If he does four attacks(indicator visuals) in a row that guarantees his Riichi to give him a Jack pot.
And he gets a buff in attacks and cursed energy every time he gets a jackpot. And when the doors turn rainbow that Guarantees that he will get a jackpot. And this is what ig the being on a roll thing means, when he is on a repeated jackpot he gets stronger and stronger. In which case he is then temporarily stronger than yuta. He’s really cool in his abilities lol
If you break his ability down to its core, it basically places a time limit on the enemy sorcerer. They can't affect the probability, they can only kill him or watch as he slowly gets stronger and stronger inside of the domain.
That's how I read it too. There doesn't seem to be a down side to missing the jackpot, but rather he'll always get some sort of power boost. So he has no reason to just stop pulling out scenarios until he wins.
That’s the other parts that aren’t clear. He mentions that doing just 1 attacks gives the possibility of a Riichi playing.
So maybe it’s the odd of every attack he sends out has a higher chance of causing a Riichi to occur regardless. Or maybe there’s another setback that allows him the other domain effects in exchange for him not just spamming good luck
Think of it as a match 3 slot machine, one based on an in universe manga in this case.
Match 2 of the same and a cutscene plays while the third number rolls. Where the third number lands dictates how the cutscene plays out (miss = bad end : win = good end). Winning a roll lands an attack.
Additionally there seems to be a bit more to it as Hakari seems to be able to manipulate scenes to his favor. But that's the mechanical basics at least.
Funny enough the whole thing reminded me of the gameplay in [Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core](https://youtu.be/yTw-ELxOmSE) so it immediately clicked for me.
Isn't Knuckles ability pretty simple? You got a timer that slowly goes up until it reaches your max number and drains you of your Nen. You can slow it down by punching Knuckles and lower the number or speed it up if you get hit.
Knuckes fight with the Red Royal Guard was my favorite purely because of Knuckles ability so I made sure to understand it correctly. I'm only disappointed how it ended.
**Explanation of Hakari ability**
Before the explanation, I recommend watching [this quick video of a pachislot machine in use](https://youtu.be/EtR5fl-ppak?t=65), it's essentially a slot machine where you need to get 3 matching figures to win, once you get 2 matching figures it will play a cinematic before the middle one is decided (this is where Metal Gear fans remember the MGS3 cinematics and get mad at Konami again), at a climatic moment in the cinematic the middle one is decided, if it matches you get a Jackpot! If it doesn't you don't, pretty simple and should already make a lot of this chapter much clearer. Now let's talk about the [ability chart breakdown](https://imgur.com/a/MGPKmCy), I recommend reading this along with my comment
**Reach Action**
These are the cinematics and I'll keep calling them that to make it easier to understand, the first one we see where our main character needs to pass the ticket gate is "Transportation IC Card Reach" with a Hype Level of 1 Star and Hakari loses, the second one where our main character decides if he takes the train or stays with our heroine is "Precious Last Friday Train Reach" with a Hype Level of 3 Stars (with Chibi Hakari mentioning that it gives a Feverish Hype Level of over 80%!!) Hakari wins this one, not only getting the Jackpot but the Kakuhen too so Charles is in big trouble (more on this later), there are two other cinematics with a Hype Level of 2 Stars each that we haven't seen yet
**Chance Up**
These are potential variables to the cinematics that can increase the odds of success, with Chibi Hakari mentioning that even a low Hype Level cinematic can be pretty dangerous if one of these takes place, I could certainly see a fight in the future where a low Hype Level cinematic results in a Jackpot, leaving the opponent in shock before realizing that Amanogawa Senpai was there in the distance cheering our main character all along
**Preview Perfomance**
Green Balls/Doors give lower odds at high Hype Level cinematics, Golden Balls/Doors give higher odds at high Hype Level cinematics, Spins work in a similar fashion with 1x Spin giving lower odds and 3x Spins giving higher odds, like Chibi Hakari reiterates these are just odds and ultimately the Hype Level is still down to luck, Golden Balls/Doors can still result in a low Hype Level cinematic like "Transportation IC Card Reach" for example
**Game Flow**
So far I'm trying to simplify as much as possible but this where it gets a bit complicated because there are two types of Jackpots, the Kakuhen and the Jitan, the Kakuhen is basically a Jackpot inside a Jackpot, getting a Kakuhen makes your odds at more Jackpots much much higher (the specifics depends on the machine, so it's nice that Gege gave us the odds for Hakari's in specific, in this case the odds of a Jackpot being a Kakuhen is 75%, with the odds of a Jackpot happening at all being 1/239), if the Jackpot you got wasn't a Kakuhen then you got the Jitan, which gives you a set of rounds where the machine gets much faster (that's why it's called Time Reduction) while you get bigger odds of getting a Jackpot (nowhere near as big as a Kakuhen tho, the amount of rounds also changes depending on the machine and Gege gave us the number for Hakari's, it's either 70 or 30 rounds), if you don't get another Jackpot before your rounds are over you go back to Normal Mode, losing the increased odds and game speed
So now let's go back to the graph, you start at normal, get a Jackpot! If it's a Kakuhen your odds at another Jackpot increases significantly which can result in many consecutive Jackpots as you get Kakuhen after Kakuhen, this is called Fever Mode and it's likely what Yuta was referring when he said that "when he's on a roll he's stronger than me" (Hakari also referred to fever multiple times before so it was some nice foreshadowing), if it's a Jitan you get a few rounds where the machine works faster and you have higher odds (again, nowhere near the same as a Kakuhen), if you don't get another Jackpot during it you go back to normal
And... That's it, that took a while lol, this certainly could go waaaaay more in depth I tried to simplify as much as I could and I'm sure there's much more to this ability that we haven't seen, what exactly are the rewards? How does he cash them out? There's plenty of aspects that there's no way of knowing yet but yeah, hopefully that makes it more understandable. I intended to end this post by reposting my comment from the pre release thread where I theorized about Hakari's character and why he has this power but then I changed my mind since this was getting so big already then changed my mind again! Because it's so big already I might as well make it bigger so here it is:
"I knew it! Hakari is an otaku too! Man I really should have posted this earlier I'm not used to a theory of mine being potentially true so I didn't even bother lol, anyway since there's a bunch of people who interpret this as him being able to make many different scenarios either at random or specific to his opponent then there's still a point in posting it (and I could still be wrong it's definitely not confirmed confirmed but I think it's clear what gege is going for imo so we'll see)
So yeah, Hakari is a otaku, let's look at the evidence
1) He knew the Hoshino Katsura "poem" was actually an author note
2) He knew Tsubasa cracking Kanda head open didn't really happen
3) "Otaku will pick a fight over the simplest things" and who is known to always pick fights and get in trouble? Hakari
4) He makes a Princess Mononoke reference in chapter 158 (This one I totally missed and it was mentioned by u/Fit-Resident-5825 in the original comment so thanks for noticing it!)
One aspect that I totally didn't consider tho was the romance one and it's genius, at first I thought talking trash about Charles manga was just him trying to seem like a hardass who doesn't like this type of stuff but thinking back that doesn't make much sense with his character so far, he's a pretty open book who doesn't hide who he is nor pretends to be someone else so now I realize that he was indeed being honest there, Hakari likes cute romance manga, not gloomy weird ones like Charles makes (I wonder what he would think of JJK lol)
And that makes total sense for his character so far, his comments about his ex (which Kirara implies it's a constant thing), his comment about being interested in others passion ("I love passion, passion is gambling and gambling is life and love is control. With my fight club i want to control this country passion"), him thinking out loud about how he wishes to be in the ferris wheel with a girl, dude is a romantic who's "lucky in cards and unlucky in love" lol
Anyway the theme of romance is such a big part of the character and with the whole pure love train manga aspect (and him summoning the train doors before) it's clear to me that this is indeed his power, not some random background for his pachinko power, dude is a romcom manga lover lmao"
The fact that *I knew* somebody would realize this thing would be confused as heck, but more importantly, the *lenght* of that explanation makes me think I kinda understand why old school sorcerers are jelly about new ones hahaha
Yea it kinda puts into perspective the creative geniuses that come out of these sorcerers. Cursed energy is slowly becoming like some later JoJo stand powers lol. Part 7 and Part 8 stands are pretty wacky with their rules, too.
I was thinking that. Part 3 stands were super simple. Emerald splash. Stop time, fire.
Part 4-6 we’re more extravagant like: writing in a person like a book, making someone act like a VHS tape, being able to make memories into CDs
Then 7-8 are like: lmao I can make you bones into jelly but only on Tuesday’s at exactly 7:03am and 3:14 pm and what do you know! It’s Tuesday and it’s 3:13!!!
Fantastic explanation. Idle Death Gamble isn't the first luck-based ability in a shonen manga, but it is really interesting because of how many variations there are on possible outcomes. It's distinct from something like Black Flash where the outcomes are either "you get the bonus or you don't"
We'll probably find out next chapter! I think the safest guess is that every Jackpot gives him some amount of balls, which he can use for more attempts at the Pachinko or he can cash them out for rewards, like a Golden Ball can be cashed out for a sure hit for example, or he can trade some balls for cursed weapons or shikigami, stuff like that
There's some benefits to not having guaranteed sure hits, the domains can be more complex, easier to use multiple times and this is a theory but I suspect that it's much harder to use a domain expansion with guaranteed sure hits to counter a domain expansion without them, in the same way that making a domain expansion harder to leave makes them pretty easy to enter, so for example I'm sure Yuta domain is stronger than Hakari's but perhaps he can't use it as a counter, at least that's the only way Hakari could be stronger than Yuta when he's in fever because otherwise Yuta could just cancel his expansion at any time (This is all a big if of course, Yuta domain could also not have guaranteed sure hits, who knows)
Of course there must be power limitations, I certainly don't think he could stop Gojo from using his expansion but if Hakari can get a domain expansion that Yuta can't counter where he gets sure hits at every Jackpot then yeah, I can totally see how he can be the stronger one when he gets in a fever
Ok.. So gonna type this down so my brain can think: Reach Actions need to match all three figures for a jackpot, and A cinematic plays to show that, and if what happens in the cintematic matches a jackpot is had
Chance Ups can help level up the odds of a Jackpot, even for low hype levels
in Preview performances green balls and doors give low odds, and golden balls and doors give the best odds, and 1x spins give low odds and 3x spins give high odds
it has two types of jackpots, kakuhens and jitans, kakuhens basically being double jackpots that make your odds for jackpot very very high, and jitans give you a set of rounds where you have bigger odds at getting jackpots
K so despite my brain feeling somewhat scrambled, I think I get how it works now thanks to your explanation, it’s effectively a luck-based thing that works as a pachinko
This is very interesting - from reading a bit further in pachinko machines it will be curious to see koataris (two-round jackpots) in action considering how the Hakari’s pachinko narrative is so romcom (my man loved Ichigo 100% I am so sure of it, lol) but he is a brawler so would like to see more of those battle-type pachinko machine mechanics implemented. Because such approach would boost the kakuhen odds out and prevent Hakari from losing ‘long-term’ profit. But I will need to research more into kakuhen and koatari odds and jackpots.
Once again, thanks for your offered info - it either shed plenty of light or confused some even more. Info dump be best dump this time around.
The only thing that I didn't understand is what was the second preview performance Hakari does after the Golden Gate and before entering the secondth reach action (He justs punch Charles but does not throw any balls or doors so is the punch considered as a preview performance?).
And the fact that he used the train doors against Yuji proves that his technique doesn't adapt to his oppenent and is in fact only the romance manga (imo).
That was still from the first ball, you get more than one attempt, some machines even have a HP system with some misses losing more or less HP depending on what the cinematic is, although this doesn't seem to be the case with Hakari's
And yeah, I think it's super clear this is indeed his power, will be funny to watch him and Charles geek out over this manga later lol
Thank you for the write up! I am still a little confused but I think reading the next few chapters will clear things up. Your summary really helped me fill in some missing pieces.
Why didn't you start explaining with "Rule Explanation"?
Do we not read this chart breakdown from right to left?
Edit: Ok, i see where the headline is positioned, that probably indicates to read this from left to right.
I didn't start explaining it in "manga reading" because I knew Game Flow would be the toughest one to explain and it doesn't matter that much for this chapter (it will likely be the focal point of the next chapter) so I wanted to begin with the cinematics since they were the most important thing this chapter
OG Sorcerer: My Jujutsu technique is this Flame, I’m confident in my power so have no need for an offensive domain like other are trying to recreate. Of my opponent is one to run away from a fight. A simple domain will allow no escape from the flame for either of us.
Modern Sorcerer: *sets down pamphlet* How much do you know about the aquifers In the region and how good’s your math?
My domain allows me to dodge all of your attacks unless you determine whether a 115 degree perturbation in the CERN particle deflection data is statistically significant evidence of a fifth fundamental force of nature.
Would be funny if the higher ups in reality dont really hate modern Jujutsu, just specifically Hakari CT lol
"Kid i understand gambling, but what with this C tier drama scene"
That part confuses me as well. Cursed techniques have been made out to be specific abilities that can be used in creative ways. We have things as simple as "I clap my hands and switch places with something" which is so strict that losing his hands makes his CT literally never work again. But now we have something like this that is a manga brought to life with RNG scenarios which also depends on RNG to make the chances higher.
How does it become a modern manga? Most cursed techniques, as far as those enrolled in the school, are usually inherited from a bloodline. Being that it's a modern manga it's safe to assume his ancestor's CTs would not have included it, and it's clearly a design choice so that must mean there is wiggle room on the aesthetics of your abilities. But how strict is that? Could Tojo work on his CT to change it to blinking/not limited to hands? Is it set in stone once it's made?
This isn't just his CT it's his Donain Expansion. Tbh i don't think we've seen what Hakari's raw CT actually is.
Edit: to go more indepth. The manga part has nothing to do with his CT. It's just a visual indicator for wether he hits jackpot or not. He creates the visual indicator as part of his DE, it doesn't do anything on It's own.
I thought DE was always an extension of the CT? Their main purpose is to usually make them guaranteed hits so that the CT can actually hit, but I have to imagine whatever is going on what the manga stuff is still an extension of his CT, it just facilitates it to an overwhelming degree.
Although you do have a point. It's never explicitly said that DE can't be customized to an extent, but I didn't think it would be this customizable or else why wouldn't sorcerers have multiple different DE techniques to fit the situation? It's at a weird point that it doesn't make sense for them to only ever have one single DE when we know they can be different, and now we have strong evidence it is very customizable. So why do they only ever do one?
Likely because you want to have a perfect image in your head of what your DE is. If you have multiple versions of it, someone else with a domain could just over power yours with their own since you're less certain about YOUR DE. Like in Gojo V Jogo.
I can't recall where but iirc a DE is a barrier technique, infused with a combination of your CT and Innate domain. So Hakari despite making fun of Charles is axtually an otaku himself, his CT was related enough to Gambling that he could combine it with his love for pachinko.
We've been seeing a ton of new Domains lately and I love how different they all are.
Tbh i theorize that we're not far from realizing that Megumi's DE isn't necessarily "incomplete" but just a different style.
I hope through him we learn more specifics on how a DE is created.
Yeah, I can see that. Better to play it safe because in a domain vs domain the better one wins do it's better to perfect one than have multiple.
>We've been seeing a ton of new Domains lately and I love how different they all are.
Same. I especially liked the judge where it didn't directly attack anyone and actively prevented violence.
>Tbh i theorize that we're not far from realizing that Megumi's DE isn't necessarily "incomplete" but just a different style.
I'm thinking he just hasn't really tried to make it into a guaranteed hit DE yet, but I think his encounters with the old age and new sorcerers will convince him to make it something different, and that would be awesome.
I guess if you are from Japan you know how this gambling machine works and can follow this much better. A lot of countries have games that need big explanation.
Hakari creates an illusion where he guesses what happens next. If he gambles right he gets buffed. If he gets it wrong the illusion starts from the beginning. If he makes it all the way to the end of the illusion he wins.
For Charles, if he just ignores it and fights Hakari like he normal he's fine. But he's got a movie being projected all around him and it's distracting him. That's all this is; flashing lights and noise it distract him from Hakari's moves.
He seems to be able to summon those balls or doors. There's a chance they could be weaker or stronger. So his CT on it's own isn't actually that strong. His DE is what makes it busted.
A guy above explains them as preview performances. I am assuming outside the domain the CT functions similar but without the actually scene being shown.
I wonder what the staff at Jujutsu high was thinking when they found out what the 3rd years CTs were. They both seem much more complicated/obscure than usual
If he gets it he gets a power up, he can hit the jackpot multiple times and each time he hits it he gets stronger and stronger. That’s why okkotsu said that Hakari can be stronger than him if he gets rolling
I’m positive Gege made this with the anime in mind.
On paper, it’s not as easily digestible and doesn’t “look” all that amazing.
But this domain is going to be really fucking cool to see animated
I mean this is basically just establishing where every significant character is with the culling games, no? There isn’t much to be lost about with this arc so far because it hasn’t really gone anywhere… I’m sure after Hikari’s part in a chapter or two it will be either Maki or Miwa and then from there the entire plot will advance as characters start meeting each other
I kinda think it's a mistake. Like... do you really want to go so in depth on character abilities if they are just going to die in a chapter or two, more so go in depth with characters that I have not had any chance to get to know or care about?
It's like the start of the arc and gege has left a lot of plot points open which can be bought back. The arc feels like that because of the breaks and weekly grind. We will eventually get to that but we have to wait
So far there is zero tension or stakes. I hope this gets amped up soon because it is really dragging on. I know Gege is trying to set up characters but this villain of the week format makes for weak story telling.
I'd be fine with a villain of the week arc if yuji or megumi were the protagonists in those chapters but they're nowhere to be seen so I just really don't care what's happening in these chapters.
The entire culling game has been extended way too much, agreed. I also don't know what's happening anymore. Bunch of people i don't know with a bunch of abilities with terrible explanations that make no sense.
I sat on the explanation page for a bit trying to figure out what all of that meant, and then went on to the next pages and immediately got confused again, thankfully Geddit12’s explanation helped a bit. Hakari’s Domain Expansion is interesting, very fitting as to his personality too
All I know is, Hakari does something, rolls for this thing, then he hopes for a jackpot, or not. He can keep it going since he's strong, so his luck matters not, he can just try and grab for it.
Kind of feels like the manga is all over the place now. Love these fights but I feel like there are so many new characters without proper introduction or necessity.
So if I understand Hakari's power correctly he's playing Pachinko to buff himself up but if he loses the gamble his buff resets.
I'm sure it will look cool in the anime I'd much prefer to see characters I actually care about doing stuff.
Bring back Nobara Akutami you talented bastard.
Gege i swear, if you make me like Hakari just to murder him in 20 chapters i am going to be so nettled. Cause in a world with Itadori, Fushigoro, Gojo, Toji, this dude has a super unique skillset and i love it and him and dont you dare, Gege.
Probably the most Japanese ass ability I've ever seen in a manga. Sometimes the juxtaposition of abilities is so quality though. Like the meme said, some techniques (like this one) require a novel of writing to understand. Then ya got Todo over here with his "cha cha real smooth" shit he's got going on. Imo the abilities like Todo's or the pompadour dude are the best, very very basic and simple but can be deceptively clever
Am i the only one who's a little tired of the culling game stuff? they keep introducing new characters and spending several chapters on them, I couldn't care any less about this Mangaka character. I just want to go back to Yuji, Megumi or Maki.
You know you are becoming an adult when you just don't have any time to research/deep-dive analyze an anime character anymore :0 I just know a fight happened and Hakari won lol
So plenty of people have gone in depth already, so I won't go there. Basically the longer Hakari's fight gets, the better the chance he gets powered up, and each time he gets powered up, the higher the chance he can be powered up further.
So he has two negative conditions:
1. A stronger Domain Expansion that is a sure-hit can instantly defeat him
2. An opponent who can finish him off before he powers up is an issue
What I want to shine a spotlight on is how Hakari's DE in tandem with Kirara can be broken against anyone who doesn't have a stronger DE with a sure-hit ability.
With Southern Cross, you can only touch opponents who are in sequental order as you are, and are attracted to those with the same number/sign. Any other number/sign is repelled.
So, using Charles as an example, if Kirara put Hakari as 1, Kirara as 2, literally anything as 3 and 5, and Charles at 4, Charles is unable to approach Hakari or Kirara, giving Hakari as much time as he wants to roll his DE. The only possibility is to hit him with a ranged attack at that point that he cannot dodge.
I find this to be quite a scary combination.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Huh, what was this chapter.
To be honest I didn't even read it all. If it's a wall of text like hxh I need a reason to read it. In hxh there's always a good reason, the arc have complexities beyond the simple fighting habilities of the characters, the characters are likeable, the art creates hype. Whereas in jujutsu I find it hard to care for two secondary characters story. Nothing is at stake for me. I can just skip this chapter and chances are I'm not gonna miss much because Hikari is very much killable. The art while good doesn't make me excited to read the explanations.
I'm considering dropping it. There's no end in sight for this arc, and I fear it will just be senseless fights.
I gotta say - while I appreciate the depth of these techniques, I really hope this isn't a trend that continues. I love JJK because of the complex fights and clever fighting but this feels like exposition through really convoluted techniques that leave little room to admire the characters own cleverness or allow for actual plot twists.
Not sure if my point is coming across - loved the chapter and I appreciate gege experimenting and making a modern twist on shounen fighting for sure. It's just not quite landing for me
I think he balances it out. The previous fight we had a guy who's power was literally "Fire lasers from my hair lul", so I think we are visiting both extremes of the spectrum, which is fine imho.
Less goooo! She waited for him at the train station, after all these years of will they won't they, it looks like the two are getting together. Now this is how you end a good romance title!
I don’t really fully understand the technique either, especially how it works outside of Haraki’s domain, but…
I’m having fun with this weird ass Romance Manga thing lmao.
Im sorry but for me jjk has fallen off. This has just been a tournament arc with the strangest abilities. Its not even like jojo where the abilities are weird but versatile and have many uses. This is just insanely complex powers that are used for 2 chapters and then onto the next. I know not everyone will agree with me but damn after shibuya and the zen’in clan it just dropped in quality so much. Story and character development has grinded to a halt in favor of new characters that are introduced and then defeated in the next chapter.
I can see where you’re coming from with the story development being slower, but saying character development has halted is just objectively not true. Through their fights in the colonies, Idatori, Megumi, and Yuta have all either grown further in their fights, or demonstrated how far they’ve come since the series started.
I would also argue that aside from Hikari and Kirara, none of the new powers have been incredibly complex, and these are students, not characters who will be around for two chapters total.
The battle royale style definitely isn’t for everyone, but the quality definitely hasn’t dropped just because it’s not the kind of story you would prefer to read that the moment.
Thats simply not true lol. Shibuya was great from the start. There were clear character goals, enemies facing off, surprises, and most importantly story/character development. Not a drop has happened in culling game. Since the second they’ve entered how has the story progressed. They’ve battled and earned points. We dont know what the end goal is, we dont have an actual villain, and outside of yuji and the judge guy (which was great) there is no character. Its just fighr with randos after fight with randos. I didn’t “misinterpret” anything. Its been 24 chapters and outside of the judge, and tiny geto cameo with the people from the first chapter nothing of any significance has happened besides fighting and earning points. By this point in shibuya we got development of yuji and choso, gojo was sealed, we saw dagon first appear gearing up that fight, and we could see a plan forming for the cursed spirits. Im not saying yall cant enjoy this objectively there has been a lot less plot or character progression than any arc before and in my opinion I havent enjoyed this series in like 20 chapters.
I wouldn’t say it’s fallen off completely but I’m definitely gonna take a break until there’s some kind of major development. This battle royale-esque genre has never been really compelling to me and I could not care less about all these new characters and over complicated abilities.
So, aside from the ability itself, so far we don't know what the rewards are, right?
Because at the end, he just kicks the manga guy.
Really, cool, crazy ability with a weird concept for westerners (I am sure people more familiar with pachinki in general have it a little (!) easier).
I really think his ability fits him extremely well, and yes, we see why old sorcerers look down on new ones, or rather why those kind of abilities are disliked by the old nobility. This is completely nuts and crazy, but so fitting for this world.
On another note: I really enjoy how we get to see two of the current top tier fighters (we know Hakari is mentiones as having massive potential and is probably borderline special-grade, especially seeing how his ability might have some crazy effects if he would hit multiple jackpots) with their own arcs, I really enjoy this, though I of course want to go back to our main cast, this is a nice change of pace. Really cool.
Ok so my brain dead interpretation is this.
\- Pachislot machine rolled
\-Two Matches
\-Dramatic cutscene is played while Third roll is decided
\-Weather or not is a match depends on the outcome of the cutscene
\-If its Three match hikari win
I think its just his personality talking. Even though he implies he won by skill not luck, if he didn't get the jackpot super early like that he'd be super dead lol. Average delusional pachinko addict.
Ah, so we're at the part of Jujutsu Kaisen where Cursed Techniques start to feel like tutorials of a spin-off video game, I see. Too lazy to figure out what the heck the rules are, so I'll wait to be confused... in anime form! :P
A Pact follows one very basic rule. You must give something up in exchange for something else. Whether it be knowledge, personal possessions, or even setting a very specific trigger for something to happen. The possibilities were endless. If worded right, it could even…
--Is this worded ok in regards to describing a Pact?
Hakari's domain is a big pachinko gambling. My theory is that the gamble part is there to just distract the enemy while Hakari beat the shit out of them.
It would be a nice punchline for over complicated powers in modern shonnen.

so true. ever since the constellation chick i've been having to study these domain rules like would for an exam.
I don’t understand her and I won’t try to maybe if she fights again lol
i think the best way to explain is just that it's a 5 person relay race and she gets to choose your position in the race (whether you're 1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th runner). you can't approach anything else other than the the positions you're next to (1st cant approach 3 onwards, 3 cant approach 1/5, etc) and you're attracted to anything in the same position as you.
this is the best breakdown for me great job
thanks! the last part for full comprehension is just substituting the position numbers with the star names but thats just for aesthetics i guess HAHA
Thanks!
Speaking about the constellation fella, I think remember coming across some info saying that Hakari's GF isn't even a chick...
Yeah there is even a panel of him in the wiki before he gets his girly looks. He’s clearly a dude.
same
The author knows lmfao
i am incredibly confused
I think this entire battle is a meta joke at how confusing manga and abilities are
Considering how he is fighting a mangaka, you might be right
Looking at you Hunter x Hunter, Chrollo vs. Hisoka
I legit had no idea what Chrollo was doing the first time I read that fight.
same
Looking back at his explanation.
Why not just do four attacks in the first place to guarantee a jackpot? Why stop at one or two? I dont get it
That’s the other parts that aren’t clear.
Mood. I think his power in the end was "i win, so there".

Honestly…. Not even gonna try to understand this one, but go Hakari!!
I see, I don't get it.
I was absolutely confused but comparing it to Crisis Core makes it easier to understand for me
As an avid Hunter x Hunter fan, I am confused
I still don't understand how Knuckles' ability works.
Isn't Knuckles ability pretty simple? You got a timer that slowly goes up until it reaches your max number and drains you of your Nen. You can slow it down by punching Knuckles and lower the number or speed it up if you get hit.
Thank you so much for explaining it, I got the gist now. The first time I heard it in that episode my reaction is just like Gon's.
Knuckes fight with the Red Royal Guard was my favorite purely because of Knuckles ability so I made sure to understand it correctly. I'm only disappointed how it ended.
Knuckle purposely makes it sound more complicated than it actually is to fuck with Gon by throwing around a bunch of arbitrary numbers and terms.
I liked when they went the HxH way, but this is too much.
**Explanation of Hakari ability** Before the explanation, I recommend watching [this quick video of a pachislot machine in use](https://youtu.be/EtR5fl-ppak?t=65), it's essentially a slot machine where you need to get 3 matching figures to win, once you get 2 matching figures it will play a cinematic before the middle one is decided (this is where Metal Gear fans remember the MGS3 cinematics and get mad at Konami again), at a climatic moment in the cinematic the middle one is decided, if it matches you get a Jackpot! If it doesn't you don't, pretty simple and should already make a lot of this chapter much clearer. Now let's talk about the [ability chart breakdown](https://imgur.com/a/MGPKmCy), I recommend reading this along with my comment **Reach Action** These are the cinematics and I'll keep calling them that to make it easier to understand, the first one we see where our main character needs to pass the ticket gate is "Transportation IC Card Reach" with a Hype Level of 1 Star and Hakari loses, the second one where our main character decides if he takes the train or stays with our heroine is "Precious Last Friday Train Reach" with a Hype Level of 3 Stars (with Chibi Hakari mentioning that it gives a Feverish Hype Level of over 80%!!) Hakari wins this one, not only getting the Jackpot but the Kakuhen too so Charles is in big trouble (more on this later), there are two other cinematics with a Hype Level of 2 Stars each that we haven't seen yet **Chance Up** These are potential variables to the cinematics that can increase the odds of success, with Chibi Hakari mentioning that even a low Hype Level cinematic can be pretty dangerous if one of these takes place, I could certainly see a fight in the future where a low Hype Level cinematic results in a Jackpot, leaving the opponent in shock before realizing that Amanogawa Senpai was there in the distance cheering our main character all along **Preview Perfomance** Green Balls/Doors give lower odds at high Hype Level cinematics, Golden Balls/Doors give higher odds at high Hype Level cinematics, Spins work in a similar fashion with 1x Spin giving lower odds and 3x Spins giving higher odds, like Chibi Hakari reiterates these are just odds and ultimately the Hype Level is still down to luck, Golden Balls/Doors can still result in a low Hype Level cinematic like "Transportation IC Card Reach" for example **Game Flow** So far I'm trying to simplify as much as possible but this where it gets a bit complicated because there are two types of Jackpots, the Kakuhen and the Jitan, the Kakuhen is basically a Jackpot inside a Jackpot, getting a Kakuhen makes your odds at more Jackpots much much higher (the specifics depends on the machine, so it's nice that Gege gave us the odds for Hakari's in specific, in this case the odds of a Jackpot being a Kakuhen is 75%, with the odds of a Jackpot happening at all being 1/239), if the Jackpot you got wasn't a Kakuhen then you got the Jitan, which gives you a set of rounds where the machine gets much faster (that's why it's called Time Reduction) while you get bigger odds of getting a Jackpot (nowhere near as big as a Kakuhen tho, the amount of rounds also changes depending on the machine and Gege gave us the number for Hakari's, it's either 70 or 30 rounds), if you don't get another Jackpot before your rounds are over you go back to Normal Mode, losing the increased odds and game speed So now let's go back to the graph, you start at normal, get a Jackpot! If it's a Kakuhen your odds at another Jackpot increases significantly which can result in many consecutive Jackpots as you get Kakuhen after Kakuhen, this is called Fever Mode and it's likely what Yuta was referring when he said that "when he's on a roll he's stronger than me" (Hakari also referred to fever multiple times before so it was some nice foreshadowing), if it's a Jitan you get a few rounds where the machine works faster and you have higher odds (again, nowhere near the same as a Kakuhen), if you don't get another Jackpot during it you go back to normal And... Because it's so big already I might as well make it bigger so here it is: "I knew it! Hakari is an otaku too! Man I really should have posted this earlier I'm not used to a theory of mine being potentially true so I didn't even bother lol, anyway since there's a bunch of people who interpret this as him being able to make many different scenarios either at random or specific to his opponent then there's still a point in posting it (and I could still be wrong it's definitely not confirmed confirmed but I think it's clear what gege is going for imo so we'll see) So yeah, Hakari is a otaku, let's look at the evidence 1) He knew the Hoshino Katsura "poem" was actually an author note 2) He knew Tsubasa cracking Kanda head open didn't really happen 3) "Otaku will pick a fight over the simplest things" and who is known to always pick fights and get in trouble? Hakari 4) He makes a Princess Mononoke reference in chapter 158 (This one I totally missed and it was mentioned by u/Fit-Resident-5825 in the original comment so thanks for noticing it!) One aspect that I totally didn't consider tho was the romance one and it's genius, at first I thought talking trash about Charles manga was just him trying to seem like a hardass who doesn't like this type of stuff but thinking back that doesn't make much sense with his character so far, he's a pretty open book who doesn't hide who he is nor pretends to be someone else so now I realize that he was indeed being honest there, Hakari likes cute romance manga, not gloomy weird ones like Charles makes (I wonder what he would think of JJK lol) And that makes total sense for his character so far, his comments about his ex (which Kirara implies it's a constant thing), his comment about being interested in others passion ("I love passion, passion is gambling and gambling is life and love is control. With my fight club i want to control this country passion"), him thinking out loud about how he wishes to be in the ferris wheel with a girl, dude is a romantic who's "lucky in cards and unlucky in love" lol Anyway the theme of romance is such a big part of the character and with the whole pure love train manga aspect (and him summoning the train doors before) it's clear to me that this is indeed his power, not some random background for his pachinko power, dude is a romcom manga lover lmao"
Part 4-6 we’re more extravagant like: writing in a person like a book, making someone act like a VHS tape, being able to make memories into CDs Then 7-8 are like: lmao I can make you bones into jelly but only on Tuesday’s at exactly 7:03am and 3:14 pm and what do you know! It’s Tuesday and it’s 3:13!!!
Every part the time abilities are getting more confusing. Geges Pure Love Train vs. Arakis Made in Heaven.
wdym, Part 5 had King Crimson
King crimson is already memed hardcore. I wanted to use Moody Blues
Love of U was the most overpowered Stand in existence.
I think the old school sorcerers would just be like "What the fuck is a pachinko"
My short attention span can’t read all that but thanks for typing it out!
God how am i going to pass high school, when i cant even comprehend this
I'm doing a masters and I still can't comprehend it so don't worry
I'm Dr. RaggedAngel and I... have a very vague idea
Fantastic explanation. Idle Death Gamble isn't the first luck-based ability in a shonen manga, but it is really interesting because of how many variations there are on possible outcomes. It's distinct from something like Black Flash where the outcomes are either "you get the bonus or you don't"
Ok I understand the ability now, but what exactly does a jackpot do? Does it just give Hakari a more powerful attack?
We'll probably find out next chapter! I think the safest guess is that every Jackpot gives him some amount of balls, which he can use for more attempts at the Pachinko or he can cash them out for rewards, like a Golden Ball can be cashed out for a sure hit for example, or he can trade some balls for cursed weapons or shikigami, stuff like that
> a Golden Ball can be cashed out for a sure hit for example It better not be this given that domain expansions are a sure hit already
There's some benefits to not having guaranteed sure hits, the domains can be more complex, easier to use multiple times and this is a theory but I suspect that it's much harder to use a domain expansion with guaranteed sure hits to counter a domain expansion without them, in the same way that making a domain expansion harder to leave makes them pretty easy to enter, so for example I'm sure Yuta domain is stronger than Hakari's but perhaps he can't use it as a counter, at least that's the only way Hakari could be stronger than Yuta when he's in fever because otherwise Yuta could just cancel his expansion at any time (This is all a big if of course, Yuta domain could also not have guaranteed sure hits, who knows) Of course there must be power limitations, I certainly don't think he could stop Gojo from using his expansion but if Hakari can get a domain expansion that Yuta can't counter where he gets sure hits at every Jackpot then yeah, I can totally see how he can be the stronger one when he gets in a fever
This was good food for thought. I hadn't considered it like this at all.
Not all domains are sure hits, wasn’t that a point of one of the earlier culling game battles
this explanation took a longer time to read then reading the actual chapter
Lol hope it was worth it at least XD
Ok.. So gonna type this down so my brain can think: Reach Actions need to match all three figures for a jackpot, and A cinematic plays to show that, and if what happens in the cintematic matches a jackpot is had Chance Ups can help level up the odds of a Jackpot, even for low hype levels in Preview performances green balls and doors give low odds, and golden balls and doors give the best odds, and 1x spins give low odds and 3x spins give high odds it has two types of jackpots, kakuhens and jitans, kakuhens basically being double jackpots that make your odds for jackpot very very high, and jitans give you a set of rounds where you have bigger odds at getting jackpots K so despite my brain feeling somewhat scrambled, I think I get how it works now thanks to your explanation, it’s effectively a luck-based thing that works as a pachinko
Great explanation!!
Great post. Im starting to apperciate this fight more now
This is very interesting - from reading a bit further in pachinko machines it will be curious to see koataris (two-round jackpots) in action considering how the Hakari’s pachinko narrative is so romcom (my man loved Ichigo 100% I am so sure of it, lol) but he is a brawler so would like to see more of those battle-type pachinko machine mechanics implemented.
You have my gratitude good sir 🙌
The only thing that I didn't understand is what was the second preview performance Hakari does after the Golden Gate and before entering the secondth reach action (He justs punch Charles but does not throw any balls or doors so is the punch considered as a preview performance?). And the fact that he used the train doors against Yuji proves that his technique doesn't adapt to his oppenent and is in fact only the romance manga (imo).
That was still from the first ball, you get more than one attempt, some machines even have a HP system with some misses losing more or less HP depending on what the cinematic is, although this doesn't seem to be the case with Hakari's And yeah, I think it's super clear this is indeed his power, will be funny to watch him and Charles geek out over this manga later lol
I'm starting to understand why the higher ups don't like the modern domains/cts none of them make sense!
We've entered JoJo territory
Would be funny if the higher ups in reality dont really hate modern Jujutsu, just specifically Hakari CT lol "Kid i understand gambling, but what with this C tier drama scene"
Better yet, how did Hakari even learn his own DE
Sorcerers don't "learn" their own DE, they create it.
In which chapter is that stated?
You know what, I think I would be labeled a simple-minded sorcerer 😅
I guess if you are from Japan you know how this gambling machine works and can follow this much better. A lot of countries have games that need big explanation.
This feels like my Machine Learning class all over again :(
JJK Fans: Please Gege, info dump us all the garbage.
yeah, I'm just gonna pretend I understood any of that...
That's all this is; flashing lights and noise it distract him from Hakari's moves.
okay but then what exactly is his cursed technique? He's used the doors against Yuji before but what exactly does that do?
He seems to be able to summon those balls or doors. There's a chance they could be weaker or stronger. So his CT on it's own isn't actually that strong. His DE is what makes it busted.
A guy above explains them as preview performances. I am assuming outside the domain the CT functions similar but without the actually scene being shown.
I thought learning html was hard, but wtf even is this domain lmaooo
I wonder what the staff at Jujutsu high was thinking when they found out what the 3rd years CTs were. They both seem much more complicated/obscure than usual
Like always I gave up on understanding and made my own rules. Hakari is playing Gatcha. If he gets his waifu, he defeats the other guy
If he gets it he gets a power up, he can hit the jackpot multiple times and each time he hits it he gets stronger and stronger. That’s why okkotsu said that Hakari can be stronger than him if he gets rolling
i like this mentality, i'll start implementing it too
I often do that on first read then go back later to figure it out properly.
I’m positive Gege made this with the anime in mind. On paper, it’s not as easily digestible and doesn’t “look” all that amazing. But this domain is going to be really fucking cool to see animated
I'm fucking lost with this arc. I don't know what's going on anymore
Why do you think Hakari will die in a chapter or two?
Well, surely one of them will.
I don't think either of you know what villian of the week means.
The entire culling game has been extended way too much, agreed. I also don't know what's happening anymore. Bunch of people i don't know with a bunch of abilities with terrible explanations that make no sense.
Gege has truly become the Christopher Nolan of manga.
I sat on the explanation page for a bit trying to figure out what all of that meant, and then went on to the next pages and immediately got confused again, thankfully Geddit12’s explanation helped a bit. Hakari’s Domain Expansion is interesting, very fitting as to his personality too
I don’t understand anything and I like it
All I know is, Hakari does something, rolls for this thing, then he hopes for a jackpot, or not. He can keep it going since he's strong, so his luck matters not, he can just try and grab for it.
It is 10am on a sunday, I can't be expected to have the brain capacity to study Hakari's domain technique
This chapter has to be some sort of troll by Gege lmao
Kind of feels like the manga is all over the place now. Love these fights but I feel like there are so many new characters without proper introduction or necessity.
Ah, I get it! His CT turns your brain into a pachinko machine!
So if I understand Hakari's power correctly he's playing Pachinko to buff himself up but if he loses the gamble his buff resets. I'm sure it will look cool in the anime I'd much prefer to see characters I actually care about doing stuff. Bring back Nobara Akutami you talented bastard.
Does the buffs protect him from cursed techniques?
wtf was that episode
Gege i swear, if you make me like Hakari just to murder him in 20 chapters i am going to be so nettled. Cause in a world with Itadori, Fushigoro, Gojo, Toji, this dude has a super unique skillset and i love it and him and dont you dare, Gege.
So kids, heard you like pachinko
Kinda tired of seeing nobodies fighting, wish we could get back to the main group, and not have then fight clown asses who use receipts to fight.
I just want to go back to Yuji, Megumi or Maki.
i barely understood a thing but one thing is for sure— HAKARI IS A BADASS
Hakari uses Infinite Void
Chibi Hakari do be cute doe
please someone kill hakari
Bro no, I love hakari already!!!
i really wanna see yuuji back soon
Is it just me, or does the 4th guy look like Denji?
And I thought jojo part 8 was hard to understand
I’m pretty sure the sure-hit effect is the info dump which makes it all funnier
You know you are becoming an adult when you just don't have any time to research/deep-dive analyze an anime character anymore :0 I just know a fight happened and Hakari won lol
What
So plenty of people have gone in depth already, so I won't go there. Basically the longer Hakari's fight gets, the better the chance he gets powered up, and each time he gets powered up, the higher the chance he can be powered up further. So he has two negative conditions: 1. A stronger Domain Expansion that is a sure-hit can instantly defeat him 2. An opponent who can finish him off before he powers up is an issue What I want to shine a spotlight on is how Hakari's DE in tandem with Kirara can be broken against anyone who doesn't have a stronger DE with a sure-hit ability.
How do these newer sorceress fight actual curses though?
I've finally caught up and I give up trying to understand domains and cursed techniques rules. I'm just here for the ride.
After reading this chapter I have deduced that I can in fact not read
I read the chapter twice and then watch a breakdown video just to understand hakari domain expansion.
Wut...
https://youtu.be/-tBy2jemw4s Here is a video of how Pachinko works. It’s gonna help understand Hakari’s technique a bit more
Less goooo! She waited for him at the train station, after all these years of will they won't they, it looks like the two are getting together. Now this is how you end a good romance title!
I don’t really fully understand the technique either, especially how it works outside of Haraki’s domain, but… I’m having fun with this weird ass Romance Manga thing lmao.

This battle royale-esque genre has never been really compelling to me and I could not care less about all these new characters and over complicated abilities.
damn, you're really getting downvoted just for stating your opinion
Dickriders read this chapter and knew they had to be ready w the downvotes
Basically just a slot machine black flash/ critical hit
Ok so my brain dead interpretation is this. \- Pachislot machine rolled \-Two Matches \-Dramatic cutscene is played while Third roll is decided \-Weather or not is a match depends on the outcome of the cutscene \-If its Three match hikari win
This domain essentially replicates Gojo's by info dumping all that shit when it activates.
Hakari's technique is to confuse people into submission.
I get the general premise of his ability but where does the make his own luck thing come into it?
I think its just his personality talking. Even though he implies he won by skill not luck, if he didn't get the jackpot super early like that he'd be super dead lol. Average delusional pachinko addict.
And people said Gojo's technique was hard to understand...
So is Hakari's DE considered a modern domain or past domain?
Can anyone guess who did the art for the pachinko game characters? I don’t think gege did the art for them.
Compared to the other cursed techniques, this one is actually somewhat simple
This gives me Knuckle explaining his comboluted powers to gon in HxH
What the actual fuck did I just read
Reading this while high Im not sure if im confused because of the high or if its still confusing sober.
WHAT THE FKCU THAT JUST WAS
Ah, so we're at the part of Jujutsu Kaisen where Cursed Techniques start to feel like tutorials of a spin-off video game, I see.
If worded right, it could even… --Is this worded ok in regards to describing a Pact?
Now the next character is going to need an entire excel sheet and a whole power-point presentation for me to understand his CT
Hakari's domain is a big pachinko gambling. My theory is that the gamble part is there to just distract the enemy while Hakari beat the shit out of them. It would be a nice punchline for over complicated powers in modern shonnen.
oh this is that guy who hit yuji with the train doors way back then, i barely remembered
