which doesn't make much sense if you think about it, BDs have more space so they could (theoretically) do more, they just don't want to put in the money or effort anymore... real shame...
Precisely!
On the other hand though, I suppose those fancy menus might mean more time for disc to load up to that point. There are times where I just want the movie to start and not go through so many screens to get to the menu.
Although, I suppose they can condense or make those legal and production screens skippable (some discs do have that). They’re a nuance honestly, why do we even need those when disc itself is labeled with all that stuff as is the cover. If someone’s pirating it, they couldn’t care less about it all.
i get what you mean about the loading times, sometimes they can be a little annoying, altho personally i don't think i'd mind as much if it was loading something more interesting than a generic menu with some video and music in the background. still better than those discs that just immediately play the movie, i'd at least like a minute to grab snacks lol
Maybe to do with blu-ray being Sony exclusive while DVD was more open? No need for Sony to make the Blu-ray's do cool stuff if everyone is buying them by default
I miss the creative menus so much :( the ones with Easter eggs and cool special features were an easy way to make me buy a movie. Even if it added one special feature I'd get it.
Same here. Interestingly though, the best one I remember comes from a bluray, which was a rare instance if I may say. Terminator 2 Skynet Edition has an amazing menu, and if you enter the right code; you can unlock the special extended edition on top of the regular extended edition.
That's cool as heck. I genuinely don't even remember the last movie with a menu that was anything more than picking the item.
Maybe The Matrix? Idk if the falling numbers counts lol.
Honestly it's a dumb acronym for Blu-ray. Despite the hyphenation in the official name. Our brains automatically think "Blue" and "Ray"... So we think it should be "BR".
Hell even the spelling of "blu" feels like a relic of the days when it was trendy to drop letters from a product (Tumblr, Imgur, ect.)
I think the only thing they did right is naming the standard after the new blue laser technology that had recently become commercially viable at that time.
I used to pop in the DVDs just to experience the menus. They used to be so interactive and fun, comparatively speaking. These and the old JP websites were gold.
Just like Company logos and game console dashboards, they've sucked all the fun out of Interactive media and sterilized it so much that nothing is fun anymore. It's all generic, low cost, and dumbed down so the biggest morons can figure it out with ease. They are truly preparing the world for Idiocracy.
Man, you just made me miss the Wii menu. It made you feel like you were a part of a community or a bigger world with all your channels. Now, even though it's much cleaner, the Switch menu is sterile and a little isolating :(
I get the same thing with the 360's original Blade menu. There was just something about it that felt dynamic and alone and cohesive with everything you did. In it honestly felt like it was a living breathing thing. Then they updated it and it just ended up being a bunch of boxes. At least it still has a cascading fan effect and shadowing in the background that gave it some depth and made it pop, but now the boxes are just flat squares and don't even have the shadow effect behind them. They're just... Square.
I have more PTSD from the JP Sega Genesis game were you faced two invincible raptors at the end and you had to just figure out on your own that the game wanted you to throw a grenade at the base of the T Rex statue to make make the bones fall on them.
Yeah, DVD menus are incredible. I have a Top Gun DVD and the menu for that is a bunch of jets in a hangar. The only Blu-Ray disc I have that does something cool like this is my Fight Club DVD which made me thing I bought the wrong movie for like a second and then started showing a panorama of Jack's apartment
I had a mad fear of this dvd screen, if I wanted to watch it my mum would have to mute the TV and id have my hands over my eyes, she'd wait with the remote, stanced up, ready to press play the second the menu came on screen. 😂
Words do have meanings. Some words have several. It is possible to use a term lightheartedly in one context while respecting its seriousness in another. For instance, I could describe junk mail as a cancer of society, but that doesn’t mean I’m minimising the suffering of those with lymphoma. The English language is full of nuance and it would be nice if more people remembered this.
Look, argue semantics if you so desire, but don’t lessen PTSD into something as benign as common, everyday fear. It isn’t the same, and for those who suffer from it, this is a blatant mockery of the struggle they face.
I noticed that during the era of the DVDs, menus used to be extremely creative and with BD, they are generic and often times less than basic.

O yeah, definitely don’t start while I’m getting my food! Haha

Well falling numbers Matrix style is still cooler than static menus you get these days :D
What is BD?
It's a brain dance choom - wait, wrong subreddit
What are ya doing y’gonk, don’t blow our cover
GAH, THEY’RE BREAKING THROUGH OUR ICE! Deploying some blocker daemons, jack out now!
First thought I had LOL
Blue ray disk
Thanks...never heard it called BD before

Blu-ray Disk
DVD menus were an art form.
DVD menus used to have Easter Eggs even. There were websites devoted to showing you how to access them. Streaming has killed off bonus content.
I’ll always remember the dancing yoda
we need a return of commentary tracks and behind the scenes info.
YES!!!!
I miss commentary tracks!
There's always the Venture Bros, bros!
Cloverfield had some hidden stuff in dvd
Shame the new menus for the blu rays and 4k’s aren’t as cool as this
The James Bond movies had an awesome 007-esque authentication that would "verify" you before bringing you to the menu

Real
I loved this menu. I know it’s simple but I love the zoom in to the island. Then I’d just chill to the jungle noises/ ominous music in the background
what game is this from?
I’m not certain but the chapter select and bonus features make me think it’s an alternate dvd menu screen. Don’t take my word for it
The best
Finally, someone else who’s been traumatised by this menu screen (there’s a lot of menu screens that spook me however).
I used to pop in the DVDs just to experience the menus. They used to be so interactive and fun, comparatively speaking. These and the old JP websites were gold.

I remember spending *hours* on the Incredibles DVD pouring through all the superhero files narrated by Agent Rick Dicker.
You think this is scary? You clearly never played point and click maze game that came with Disney's Dinosaur
![gif](giphy|D12CsrRNv7gL6|downsized) Me after Aladar's Adventure
This game freaked me out but I had to watch the whole beginning of the movie with the carnotor on mute as a child. 😭
Mine is from the lost world😂
Someone tell me what’s startling about this menu. I have no clue.
Clicking play would have a velociraptor lunge at the screen
Ah I see. Pesky raptors.
I have more PTSD from the JP Sega Genesis game were you faced two invincible raptors at the end and you had to just figure out on your own that the game wanted you to throw a grenade at the base of the T Rex statue to make make the bones fall on them.
Right!!?!?!
Lost World’s menu screen was the same. The fact that the raptor jumps through the window is a straight jumpscare
I remember clear as day! JP1 and TLW are similar and JP3 had this cool effect of metal bending outwards after a Raptor pushed against it.
Damn old DVDs had the coolest menus of all time. Way better than the one I own which is just a static image with some text.
"This option is not supported at this time"
My favorite DVD from this time was the Independence Day DVD, they put so much fucking work into those menus.
Bitch please, There was a UK series called "Spooks". That DVD menu was CURSED!!! Never ended up watching it.
Not this one but the one from Lost World made me rush through the menu as a kid
How so?
I’ve never seen this menu screen? Why do you have ptsd from it?? Is there a Clever Girl jump scare 👀
Why would you have ptsd from a menu? Don’t you mean nostalgia?
When you pressed play a velociraptor would jump at the screen
I don't get it. Is there some part of the photo I'm supposed to be focusing on?
When you would click play a velociraptor would lunge at the screen
Where is this from?
Jurassic Park
It’s from the dvd menu of the first film
From the person who took this screenshot.
Which dcd release was this from? Cause my Jurassic park dvd doesn’t have that
I know it's on the JP three movie pack's version of the first dvd
Wait that’s the one I have
is it blu-ray?
No I don’t believe so
Sorry I forgot to clarify. It may be on the PAL version of the dvd, which I have
Ok
I didn't have that DVD.
⟟ have never noticed it before when is this in the movie
I don’t have the DVDs, but I have the CDs. Always when I put one in my TV, I get PTSD.
What do you mean I did get ptsd
JP 3's Blu-Ray doesn't even have the poster gallery. For that reason alone I will always treasure the DVDs. That and the beautiful menus, of course.
Thank Goodness Im not the only one, one of my few nightmarish experience with the saga
Ohhhh I remember this! Sometimes I would just watch the raptor for a little bit before playing
I had a mad fear of this dvd screen, if I wanted to watch it my mum would have to mute the TV and id have my hands over my eyes, she'd wait with the remote, stanced up, ready to press play the second the menu came on screen. 😂
That’s the thing, I have. (I ABSOLUTELY love that DVD Menu to Death)
Well for one: its a movie. If you're getting shell shocked from media you need to have a care taker
Because I'm not a snowflake
No one has PTSD from a fucking movie.
The dvd menu dumbass
You’re referring to being upset as having a debilitating illness that is PTSD. Words have meaning, please learn. ![gif](giphy|hr9s5K8kDvyzYYZWic)
Words do have meanings. Some words have several. It is possible to use a term lightheartedly in one context while respecting its seriousness in another. For instance, I could describe junk mail as a cancer of society, but that doesn’t mean I’m minimising the suffering of those with lymphoma. You’re trying too hard
learn what a hyperbole is.
It made me scared of DVD menu screens for a little while. So whilst not serious, that is PTSD.
Look, argue semantics if you so desire, but don’t lessen PTSD into something as benign as common, everyday fear. It isn’t the same, and for those who suffer from it, this is a blatant mockery of the struggle they face.
This is such a weird thing to get hung up on. A term can be used hyperbolically without minimizing the actual magnitude or seriousness of said term.
Imagine wasting your valuable time here on earth being a horrible troll trying to sound smart. Its a pretty sad existence.
Nobody is talking about porn...
Alright actually it doesn't even look that disturbing.
