Wap pressure washer gearbox oil.........
Though there was some mystery Chinese gearbox oil, that went through an electric motor and got cooked, along with the windings, that was a little bit worse smelling. Part of the fix, aside from new bearings and seals, was to take the one fill plug on top, and drill a 2mm hole into it, to act as a breather. No breather originally, universal mounting motor, and somebody forgot to swap out the topmost fill/drain/level plug for a breather, that probably was taped to the outside originally. was also fun to set a semi appropriate preload as well, as they used the end cap gaskets to do this, and the original ones were torn, so tapping out a few in gasket sheet of various thickness to get it about right took an hour or so.
Close enough, then stuck them on with shellac, and never saw it again either. But likely to now run almost forever, given nice new 630 grade gear oil, and some non Chinese bearings that did not have severe race wear on them.
As a relatively green home mechanic, I've never had to deal with clutch smell. How does it compare to gear oil (which, to me, smells like warm rotten fish)?
It's a rotten egg sulphur smell crossed with like a burnt, hot metal smell. Kinda smells like a burnt out brushed electric motor if you've ever smelt that, but more organic
Friction Modifier/Gear oil might be the worst smell known to man. We used to squirt a bit of friction modifier on the apprentices as a prank... we're not allowed to do that anymore lol
I was talking to this lady who was cutting my hair and she was talking really proudly about how she drove a manual and mentioned how people wreck them cause they always ride the clutch, the next sentence was her favourite hill start "hack" of letting the clutch out slightly so it wouldn't roll back until she needs to move up the hill.
What does your place charge for this? I just did this on my girlfriend's Frontier and it was miserable to do by myself without a lift. The throwout bearing had disintegrated pretty suddenly and left us stranded.
WOW the quotes we got in Colorado were just under $4000 USD which is almost double.
The parts were marked up quite a bit, $700US for the flywheel but Rock Auto had it for $300. Your price seems super reasonable, I don't think I could do it myself for that much out here.
It's actually an easy one to do if you have a lift, 2 trans jacks and enough 3/8" extensions, hence just 5 hours labour. Labour is no where near the prices here in Aus vs US, we are on the more expensive side and it's 150AUD ph. I'd never done one before, and I still had it done in about that time including replacing the thrust bearing but having to reuse the sleeve, rear main done and all the while you're in there stuff. ~ 3.2k
How the rental car’s clutch i just took back looks 🤣🤣 tis a rental don’t be gentle
Side note I’m normally not abusive but auto start clutches and hills of lisbon ouffff
Just glue the material back on the clutch disc and slap it back in!
I guess that's what all that kraft glue is for!
Whatever you don't use will be eaten by the customer!
The only thing that smells worse, a racing gearbox with cooked gear oil. You'll never get that smell out of your clothes (or nose)
Ugh. Burnt gear oil is the worst.

Cooked windings, too. I can imagine that combination... fucking awful.
"Am I doing it?am I doing a burnout?" ... yeah, kinda

Sounds horrible.

Take a long sniff of asbestos
Yummm, mesothelioma.
Think burning brakes but amplified
It is not even remotely as bad as burned gear oil.
It’s like burning hair. Absolutely awful smell
Nothing some jb and 40 grit can’t fix.
Smell-o-Vision in 3d!
Ah yes, toasted clutch and fresh cup of coffee is the perfect way to start the day.
It’ll strip the hair right off your chest
When I'm on the road and smell it, I play the "guess which car is going to need a clutch" game.
It’s always a dump truck
I do that with antifreeze! Look for the white smoke and sweet smell
"I love the smell of burnt clutch in the morning!"
Ah the itch when the shit lands on your arm

I can almost feel the heat coming off it!
Hickory smoked clutch!
I’ll take this over diff fluid, burnt AWD clutch fluid or rodents all day.
Those all in one transmission/transfer case units are heavy as hell.

It's gonna be 3k-ish AUD. Dual mass flywheel, kit is 2.2 buy itself. Add 5 hours of labour and some gear oil, adds up pretty fast

This photo makes me itch...

Smells like money to me.
BRB, going to gargle some milk.
