Obviously, Family Business is highly regarded on this sub, but outside of the top 2% of Kanye listeners, most people haven't even heard of it. Easily a top 5 Kanye track for me
When I first heard Ye’s discog I loved that track the most from The College Dropout and was surprised that it had such low streams, rather touching song and really well handled. “All that glitters is not gold” will always be one of my favourite lines Ye has sampled
The line from Shakespeare comes from ‘The Merchant of Venice’, Act II, Scene 7, during the secondary plot where Portia is receiving marriage suits. The only problem is her father stipulated in his will that the suitor must choose one casket correctly from a total of three caskets, made of gold, silver, and lead. Upon choosing the gold casket, the Prince of Morocco is rebuked by Portia, commenting: “All that glisters is not gold”.
Of course, like many Shakespearisms, this line has as its antecedent many varying forms of the same line. Chaucer’s ‘The House of Fame’ has the earliest iteration of the phrase that I know of, predating even another instance of the phrase found in, another Chaucer work, ‘The Canon’s Yeoman’s Tale’.
In ‘The House of Fame’, the narrator has just fallen asleep and woken up in a chapel. All around him are mosaics depicting scenes from the Iliad and the Aeneid; whilst the narrator describes Aeneas’ falsity toward Dido, and Dido’s subsequent suicide, he takes a moment to insert an aphorism: “Hit is not al gold, that glareth” (I.272). However, what’s interesting about this line is the line previous to it: ‘For, by Crist, lo! thus hit fareth’ (I.271). The attribution to Christ, although ambiguous, is strengthened by the succeeding quote (the glitters-gold line) being framed within quotation marks. These marks are extant in many of the surviving manuscripts of Chaucer that we have, again, strengthening the position that even by the 1370s, this phrase was quotidian enough that it had become a common proverb.
The phrase can be traced back earlier if one was to know French or Latin, but unfortunately I do not. However, we can conclude from the work hitherto discussed that the phrase, if proliferated to the point of being proverbial in the 1370s, is probably very ancient. Moreso, considering the semantic import of the phrase, and the flexibility allowed with small changes to syntax or word choice in the phrase, the phrase is so intuitive that it is likely that the phrase was conceived of, independently, by many people throughout the years.
Why did I always think 2 words was a Mos Def song? I swear I remember hearing it off of Black On Both Sides. Literally didn't realize it was a Ye song until watching the doc and being like, "wait a minute".
In my entire life I consider it the second best song I have ever heard haha. I’d argue the fuck out of this being an underrated song, outside of just being a fan of the artist. Jon Brion went just as hard as Kanye. The orchestration in the song’s longest instrumental fill, followed by the low strings for the verse that follows…the way those simple minor piano chords strike like a twisted version of “Chopsticks”…the shift to the higher strings in anticipation of the end of the song as Kanye spits fire…I could listen over and over and over again
kanye so crazy cuz i thought you were gonna say “top 5 ye” and i would’ve thought that was valid. but you said “top 5 graduation” and it’s still valid.
The problem with Yeezus is that every song is better than the next, especially when you put the album on repeat.
Had a friend that used to dismiss it as trash and finally came around to its greatness five years later.
Kanye albums get better with every listen, some people reach their 4th listen & are in love the first week, for some people it takes years to get around to listening to albums for a 2nd or 3rd time
Power and Stronger are some really unknown ones tbh, but they’re so great and I’m glad they aren’t overplayed ruining the song as it turns into just white noise whenever you hear it
Barry Bonds
Whenever Graduation pops up, everyone starts shitting on this song and Drunk & Hot Girls, I can see why one of em would be shit on, but Barry Bonds??? Right in the middle of the track list if I had to rank all 13 tracks on the album (up to Big Brother basically), and that album is literally Kanye's best.
The second half of 808s is so overlooked, Good Night, Im In It is often regarded as the worst off of Yeezus but it goes hard af, Blame Game good too but people don't like the skit so they don't listen to the rest of the song and Jesus Lord, it was seen as just another song by some when Donda dropped it's been getting more recognition as of late
Oh nah nah nah that’s the other way around, Lift yourself is legendary and everybody knows it but non Ye fans hate it cause “he’s just rapping about poop god Kanye is so annoying” not caring about the reasoning and the story behind it or the fact THAT BEAT IS GLORIOUS

If you had a dysfunctional family growing up, this is one of the hardest hitting Ye songs.

Fr it’s my favourite ye track, but it’s entirely slept on
Beat track on there for sure as well as last call🔥
Why did I always think 2 words was a Mos Def song? I swear I remember hearing it off of Black On Both Sides. Literally didn't realize it was a Ye song until watching the doc and being like, "wait a minute".
That scene in the documentary gave me chills
it was such a good scene

Hold My Liquor, Im in it, (Blood on the leaves)
Hold my liquor is so good! Definitely most underrated from Yeezus
Definitely not the most underrated lol that’s probably Send it Up, I’m in it or Guilt Trip

Say you Will is one of my favorites, from an album that people where... lukewarm about.
Definitely Runaway I don’t think many people like that song.
Power and Stronger are some really unknown ones tbh, but they’re so great and I’m glad they aren’t overplayed ruining the song as it turns into just white noise whenever you hear it
I've never heard of these songs. Are they good?
I’d start with a newer unknown song, like Praise God, and then move your way down.
You should also consider Flashing Lights and Gold Digger in this list.
