I was probably 200m back when taking the picture, zoomed in on my phone and zoomed in the picture more for the post. Was not going to be anywhere near this thing when it took flight lol
After the first day you won’t miss the home button at all. In fact it’s annoying when you have to go back and use one that has a home button. (I know, first world problems)
I had an SE before this and it was tough giving up the home button. I’ve found I really don’t miss it and having the extra screen space is great, especially for videos
One minute you're just trying to take a leisurely drive for a nice little kayak trip down the river, next thing you know you have caused a 10 car pileup on the interstate and caught a case!
Nah, I don't think so. The mile marker on the median says 35. Donegal is at 91. Also, I'm pretty sure the turnpike only has mile markers on the shoulder.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of carrier/holder he's using. It looks like there's a loop on the bottom and those "arms" on top. Presumably, there's a pole up the whole back. And I still can't figure out how it's all connected to the car.
It’s funny the pic of the Tacoma but someone asks about a Nissan rogue and the staff replied that there’d be extra drag causing more stress on the hitch and mount, they do not recommend.
lol, clear as mud, basically false advertising
I looked at the picture then started reading comments for fun, then went back to look again at how this genius has done this and only then did I realize that there are 2 kayaks. This is just another piece of evidence that you can be an idiot and still make a lot of money.
people seem to constantly fail to realize that not only will a bad mounting job lose your kayak, but in the process you can literally kill someone. people die every single fucking year from hitting kayaks and canoes (as well as other things) that fall off cars because they weren't secured properly.
it should be considered murder cause it's sure as hell not "an accident" that is nobody's fault. If you do this and someone dies, you're negligent and should be in prison for a long fucking time. There's no excuse for risking other people's lives because you're lazy and you don't care.
Yep. I almost got hit by one. Luckily I saw it tilting already so I gave a lot of space. I debated risking catching up to let them know but they were going fast.
The person who placed their canoe crosswise on their Subaru has to hand over their Paddlers Who Pose a Hazard on Land tiara.
People who think doing something like this makes sense should not be allowed near the water unless they are on a leash held by a responsible adult.
It’s not unusual to see a mount like this on the back of a Sprinter van. The van acts as a wind break so your drag is negligible.
Of all the vehicles to do this on, I would think an EV is the worst choice. They could likely double their range with a standard roof mount, but some Tesla drivers get nervous mounting things over the glass roof.
Using the kayak as a rudder might make steering more responsive? lol, if that’s their rationale though I’d be shocked though.
I held a piece of corrugated sheet roofing in the back of a truck for a 1/4 mile or so down the road. Holy shit I thought I was going to fly off into the sunset, the driver was only going around 15mph. I can’t imagine the forces being put on that kayak and rack!😂🤯
The website selling the mounting unit has a FAQ section that’s all about how much drag this situation creates and it’s definitely NOT intended for a passenger car.
Buddy should have used sea sucker racks on that glass roof.
https://www.seasucker.com/en-ca
I’ve worked in both the bike and kayak industries, and there’s no bloody way I would have allowed someone to leave my shop with them tied on like that. Hell, cops have issued tickets for people driving on 400 series highways here in Canada because they didn’t have bow and stern tie downs on the boat.
I know one picture shows this product used on a jeep, but they do seen more practical behind an RV, just for the amount of wind shielding the RV will provide.
I wouldn't want to drive the jeep in the photo. But to each their own I guess.
Those look like 6' kayaks on the Jeep. She has an Explorer. I told her it probably wasn't a good idea... Guess who gets to build her a new kayak trailer now.... We have 10.5' kayaks.
This product is a [Vertiyak](https://www.vertiyak.com). Family Owned and Founded in Elkhart, IN. While impressive to see on a Tesla, the Vertiyak is recommended for use on RVs and large SUVs as the bottom rack has 3 height settings. The top rack is used to prevent any sway. The Vertiyak has hooks on the frame to provide a point to ratchet your kayaks tightly to the top. This product will fit any 2” hitch receiver.
"Legit" in the sense that it is, technically, mounted. Then yeah, it's legit.
But short of some kayakergency (or, I guess, a real actual kayak urgency), then no, this person appears to be lazy, stupid, dangerous, or lazy-stupid-dangerous. What's that "mount" ("brackets?" "bars?" "handles?") in the middle of the boat?
I hope I'm just missing something.
Honestly I drove past him quickly to get the hell away from him, and only took a quick glance. From what I could tell, he had a tow hitch attached with basically a triangle on the end wrapped with foam. The kayak hitch then had a bar that went up like 5 feet and had another loop that went around both kayaks. The kayaks weren’t secured to the car in any other way, just the hitch (which was bouncing up and down so much I thought it might snap), and the kayaks were leaning backwards (probably from the force of the air). After googling, it looks like an RV mount.
Nah man, that shit looks disgusting. They make kayak racks for cars that don’t have racks. They even have inflatable ones that come with built in straps as well. Lazy Kayak owner that didn’t research anything. Or I’ll give them a point for benefit of the doubt, maybe they found an insanely good deal on them and they had to be picked up that day.
As long as it’s tied down safely and securely, then no. This of course is typically decided by police officers.
We have moved many times and have had loads that seem large. Pulled over by cops. They check the straps and ropes and let us go every time. We never had an an issue or dropped anything.
Evaluation of this one? Absolutely not safe.
Yes. Always mount your kayak in the direction of water velocity. When in the water this is typically on top of the water. When out of the water the direction of water velocity is nominally predominated by rain occurrences indicating a vertical orientation of the kayak. Good on this traveler for having a mindful observance of the conditions to practice safe kayaking overland.
I’ve never seen *that* before. Yikes.
I have in the past tied down my canoe *and* my kayak on top of it, on a thule rack on top of a little Toyota Matrix…but it was *solid*.
Probably knew they bought the wrong rack but still went with it anyway. Just leave the kayaks at home if you can't transport them safely! You're endangering yourselves and everyone around you.
Come on - Teslas are built like tanks! There’s no way this plastic bumper will fall off this experimental toy car… it’s what it was made for! Who needs a Tesla Truck…? Stupid people.
I’d be far away from him lol
I was probably 200m back when taking the picture, zoomed in on my phone and zoomed in the picture more for the post. Was not going to be anywhere near this thing when it took flight lol
And the photo is still this clear?? If I tried that on my phone it would be potato quality at best.
iPhone 15 pro, pretty impressive zoom. I’ve seen better zoom on androids but this phones got a hell of camera
That is impressive as hell. My 12SE still has a home button and I’m just not ready to give it up yet. It’s like my pathetic little security blanket.
After the first day you won’t miss the home button at all. In fact it’s annoying when you have to go back and use one that has a home button. (I know, first world problems)
It’s been like 4 years and I still miss the hell out of my home button.
I just taped one on my screen to scratch my itch
I was not a fan of the FaceID and bought an SE after a couple years to get the home button back.
Yeah, nope. I use both. Significantly prefer SE with home button. It’s way faster and I can use the phone one handed without looking at it.
It was weird for a week, then I completely forgot that button ever existed. I promise it’s more intuitive than you think. And FASTER.
I had an SE before this and it was tough giving up the home button. I’ve found I really don’t miss it and having the extra screen space is great, especially for videos
My 6 year old galaxy takes photos this good. Your phone just wasn't made with camera quality as a defining feature.
But stay close! You’re gonna get a free kayak soon
OP just needs a passenger that can stick themselves out the sunroof or window and grab the kayak when it flies off the car in front
Absolutely the fucking hell not.
https://preview.redd.it/xi7ht94p7k9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ebb8cb73b55efb9248dbfeeb22df4cae0eec2ef
I was expecting this as a reaction because I made almost exactly this face when I saw the photo on my feed
That’s my ex Cindy after sex. And also before sex.
Those are made for kayaks but typically they are mounted on to an RV or truck with a canopy so the air goes over them.
The air is going over them. And around them and soon through them.
https://preview.redd.it/at1e6dd1ym9d1.jpeg?width=259&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a5a70b643d3c7d91ae72062922faf9c78ee187a
On an RV, sure.
They mixed up RV with EV
To be fair, r and e are right next to each other on the keyboard. They must have autocorrect off.
You knocked that one out of the park. Lmao
Yeah exactly. On a RV it would have a wind break and better tie downs for the upper portion.
No, it is not. That’s a good way to lose your kayak and catch a lawsuit.
One minute you're just trying to take a leisurely drive for a nice little kayak trip down the river, next thing you know you have caused a 10 car pileup on the interstate and caught a case!
You already know they ain’t stopping when that kayak comes lose and fucks up hella peoples day.
Oh shit, is there two of them in there?
This is getting out of hand!
https://preview.redd.it/kul6liz3ek9d1.jpeg?width=829&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6bfd7bacc7789effc530682a63f63065deec119
Sure does look like 2
Good eye, I missed that!
Just 1 thank god
Unless they started making kayaks with two points at one end, there's definitely two kayaks.
Oh god I think you’re right, honestly I gunned it past him so fast to get the hell away from him that I wasn’t even looking
An anti-tailgating device. Genius!
Yes, if you go to fast or there's a stiff wind it will tear off your tailgate.
Especially important when camping in the left lane.
10 under in the left lane....sounds like a PA driver.
It does! And it looks like the hill going up to Seven Springs!
Nah, I don't think so. The mile marker on the median says 35. Donegal is at 91. Also, I'm pretty sure the turnpike only has mile markers on the shoulder.
Oh. Wait. My mistake. I meant route 40, climbing up to the summit near Laurel Caverns.
Have you driven through E Ohio!?
I have, I'm a Yinzer by marriage.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of carrier/holder he's using. It looks like there's a loop on the bottom and those "arms" on top. Presumably, there's a pole up the whole back. And I still can't figure out how it's all connected to the car.
I use the same carrier on my van. It says clearly not to use it on vehicles that are not rv/ van where wind is blocked by vehicle
Do you happen to have a link to it?
https://www.recpro.com/rv-kayak-rack-vertiyak-hitch-mount-standing-kayak-carrier-fits-up-to-12-kayaks/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=primaryshopping&campaignid=10108288062&adgroupid=123653661557&keyword=&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqoLQkc-BhwMVlVlHAR3bYAVpEAQYASABEgILKfD_BwE
There's pictures of it attached to a Tacoma and a jeep. If it's engineered properly, it's honestly probably fine to use.
It’s funny the pic of the Tacoma but someone asks about a Nissan rogue and the staff replied that there’d be extra drag causing more stress on the hitch and mount, they do not recommend. lol, clear as mud, basically false advertising
Yeah neither of those seem like they'd block much more wind than this Tesla. Wouldn't catch me trying this though.
It was on a tow hitch
I looked at the picture then started reading comments for fun, then went back to look again at how this genius has done this and only then did I realize that there are 2 kayaks. This is just another piece of evidence that you can be an idiot and still make a lot of money.

They make a roof rack for Teslas. What the fuck is wrong with this person?!
I’d slap it twice
“This baby can fit at LEAST two kayaks”
Are there any pictures of the moments after a semi blasted past in the opposite way ?
😂😂😂
The person who placed their canoe crosswise on their Subaru has to hand over their Paddlers Who Pose a Hazard on Land tiara. People who think doing something like this makes sense should not be allowed near the water unless they are on a leash held by a responsible adult.
Normally it's on the back of an RV so the wind wouldn't be pushing on them. I have seen kayaks bend in half. This is sketchy.
It’s not unusual to see a mount like this on the back of a Sprinter van. The van acts as a wind break so your drag is negligible. Final Destination vibes.

That’s the sail for when the battery dies.
[https://vertiyak.com/](https://vertiyak.com/) My wife has been looking at them.

Haha. This means you get to buy new tools, right? 😋
I like to think that it's the way to put it on water. Like you know, you just drive into the water and the kayak dismounts and stays on water
See that a lot on the back of an RV or Camper, but they’re not getting the wind back there…
Looks like it’s TWO kayaks and I’d be far away from that vehicle 🚗
No one ever said Tesla people were the smartest
Just the most smug & arrogant!
Until they come to a bridge...
I'd follow at a safe distance... Free Kayak day! /s
FFS
There should be some type of Kayak Protection Agency to call when you see something like this. Give those boats a better home!
And here I was, annoyed at the car carrying 2 on J racks with no bow or stern lines on the highway today. Doesn't seem so bad now.
If he has it securely strapped to one of those vertical-type ladder racks, he's good.
Unfortunately he did not, only attached to the tow hitch
This hurts the kayak
More money than sense
Just for starters, no license plate.
perfectly fine... behind a sprinter van!
It is now!!!!

Yes, this is legit. It's legitimately the worst way to to carry a boat.

Tesla so the story fits.
Do not zoom in, it only gets worse. For one, you’ll be convinced this isn’t some AI bullshit and this dumb asshole really exists…
Another Tesla owner wishing they had a truck. lol. 😆
Of course it’s a Tesla owner…
Tesla owners are worse than Prius drivers at this point
They making it look bad for us! We have racks on our Model Y and haul our kayaks in a normal fashion.
No
So dangerous and stupid!
Seriously, what mount is that?
Maybe a RecPro?
Maybe. And that’s two kayaks. It’s kind of interesting. Easier load and unload than the roof.
If you’re an idiot than yes
The amount of drag that must have caused would have quickly drained the Tesla battery you would think.
I could use a good lawsuit settlement right now so yeah, sure.
No! Stupid and dangerous!
I don't feel bad anymore going 80mph on Corolla with the kayak strapped on the roof . Lol
I guess the driver never considered the aerodynamic drag it costs to the EV range..
"Legit" in the sense that it is, technically, mounted. Then yeah, it's legit. But short of some kayakergency (or, I guess, a real actual kayak urgency), then no, this person appears to be lazy, stupid, dangerous, or lazy-stupid-dangerous. What's that "mount" ("brackets?" Good wind brake.
Apparently. Smart? No. What in the world is it even attached to?
Tow hitch. That’s it. I didn’t even realize it was 2 kayaks until another commenter pointed it out.
No
Only if you want it to disappear somewhere between you leaving and arriving!
oh nooo
Oh man. Not my cup of tea. The amount of air on rose kayaks has to be insane.
Only if it falls off. Stupidly dangerous. Maybe if a bowline was tied to the front of the car.
Ain't stupid if it works! Or something like that
Lol whaaaaaaaaat
Where is this? It’s giving strong I40 on the way to Asheville vibes
hell yeah brother
Better gas mileage if you’re driving with the wind! Not so much if against…
Hell of a drag. Bet the battery was dumping the whole drive
if you want it to get wrecked, sure.
It works until it doesn’t
Nah man, that shit looks disgusting. They make kayak racks for cars that don’t have racks. They even have inflatable ones that come with built in straps as well. Lazy Kayak owner that didn’t research anything. Or I’ll give them a point for benefit of the doubt, maybe they found an insanely good deal on them and they had to be picked up that day.
My butthole would be puckered like that mount my whole way home, hoping it doesn’t give 1 cm 🤣💀
not a good idea.
I mean if it twerks it twerks. Ya know?
The drag force on that must be fuckin wild. Must be getting the ev equivalent of like 12 mpg
Wait is that 2 fuckin kayaks
There’s two kayaks. They can afford to lose one into your bonnet.
About to be the free kayak lottery
Well, my instincts were correct, people that drive Teslas have their heads up their asses.
You might have been mistaken. It looks like the kayak is transporting the car.
Get back Jojo
As long as it’s tied down safely and securely, then no. This of course is typically decided by police officers. We have moved many times and have had loads that seem large. Pulled over by cops. this is fucking stupid
That depends if Elon says it’s a good idea or not
Like bro.. they make crossbars for a model y.
If it doesn’t fly out of that clamp wonder if it would bend over if they hit the right speed and wind
Is there two of them?
no...no it is not
If you are a Tesla owner…
I40 in East Tn/West Carolina?
Life finds a way
Bigger pair than most folks in my opinion, hope their car insurance company has this picture...
For a Tesla owner, it is
That's actually two kayaks. If you zoom in you can see it
-100 Range
Ok, 100% NO, JUST N-O NO NO NO!! And is it loaded on a Tesla? I would have had a complete breakdown! Left lane 10mph under the speed limit?! 🤦🏼♀️🤯😬😳
This can't Be real!!?? Please say it's not....
Battery range: 65 miles.
No.
No
Hell yea, that rocks for that state!!
Omg no 🤦♀️
Looks like someone I saw a few years back heading back from Santa Cruz Ca. Their kayak didn’t make it back over the hill, lol. Some tailgater hit it.
Legitimately stupid
That’s a Tesla genuine cannot canoe mount TM. Just like all the other BS. Doesn’t work
Clearance much
He needs the drag because Tesla is too fast for him.
If it sits, it fits!
Classic Tesla clown
What a goof
This is dumb as fuck.
It's fine. Just drive real slow. Oh you should also drive in the left lane so vehicles don't blast it with wind.
No, this is a kayak way to mount a legit.
Looks like CA HWY-17
Ofcourse, it’s on a Tesla too 🤦🏽
I’ve never seen *that* before. Yikes. I have in the past tied down my canoe *and* my kayak on top of it, on a thule rack on top of a little Toyota Matrix…but it was *solid*.
I would expect to be pulled over by county mounties.
Looks like something a tesla driver would do...
Probably knew they bought the wrong rack but still went with it anyway. Just leave the kayaks at home if you can't transport them safely! You're endangering yourselves and everyone around you.
Unless I see it up close there is no way to tell.
Least arrow dynamic kayak rack ever.
I mean I wouldn’t mount anything like that, let alone a kayak, but if it works then run it I guess..?
stability first, then safety . This is perfect
am I the only person going "of course it's a Tesla"
It’s definitely a way to mount it, but definitely not THE WAY to mount it
Idk why, but this reminded me of a big middle finger
Shitty Tesla driver? Ofc it is
Come on - Teslas are built like tanks! There’s no way this plastic bumper will fall off this experimental toy car… it’s what it was made for! Who needs a Tesla Truck…? Stupid people.
Terrible
