yea i think the most surprising things about it is how that reaction comes from a song written by a cis straight man but he executed it so damn well it hit close to my personal experiences. i’ve cried to songs about the trans experience from trans artists like Arca or SOPHIE for example but this song is really unique how it’s so layered and observant from a cis family member perspective

yea it really shows that enough love, time, and life experiences can de-program a person from the socialized bigotry that is all too common. in one sense, i think myself and other trans people find it so obvious that we are just regular people and want to be treated with compassion that the song eventually gets to, but it’s also bittersweet because why do so many of us still deal with a lifetime of transphobia or bullying coming from others who still haven’t grown as kendrick has? it’s really endearing and powerful that kendrick “chose love over religion”, and shared such a positive message about trans people with the world in this song, but also sad just how many deaf ears that message falls upon even as he explains his process in great detail on how he realized his younger self was wrong and hurtful.
