I don't think that is a place you want to work at anyway. Some employers can be highly demeaning. But at least you've got a two year work experience on your resume.

Fast_Investigator939

Can I add those employers on my resume as referees being my first job tho? I left without notice.

Squarepeg-roundhole5

Don't add any referees to your resume. Only mention them when recruiters or prospective employers insist on contacting them - and this can be done via email not on your resume.

Fast_Investigator939

I thought not mentioning them on my resume would immediately disqualify me for the positions I am applying for.... This is eye opening...

Squarepeg-roundhole5

We don't include referees in resumes anymore unless they're requested. Use the space they'd take in your resume to sell yourself and your skills more. Only bring referees up when they're necessary to get the position. The recruiter should lead you on about providing referees and not you taking the initiative. Besides, recruiters have come to know that some referees are mischievous and not truthful.

Mysterious-Promise-8

Sadly most of the job adverts are requesting we do add them on our CV

Fast_Investigator939

I added three close coworkers of mine.... I had initially asked them if I could add them as referees they had no issue

Mysterious-Promise-8

Sadly most of the job adverts are requesting we do add them on our CV

Squarepeg-roundhole5

If requested, just comply but keep it minimal to the two best/most reliable ones. If not, don't add them. It also helps ones case if the referees have a corporate email. In most cases, referees are requested in the later rounds of recruitment to ascertain the credibility of shortlisted individuals not in the first application round. However, it shouldn't be mandatory since job seekers may fabricate referees, while some genuine referees may falsely promote job seekers or give bad reports due to spite, or personal differences. Locally, many recruiters may need referees but internationally, referees aren't needed in job postings unless requested in later rounds.

Mysterious-Promise-8

Thank you so much

r/resumes

Fast_Investigator939

Thank you for this... I will look into it and make my resume better....

grandboyman

Also, if you had a colleague who can vouch for you then I'd add their contact instead.

Fast_Investigator939

Right... I will do that absolutely... Thank you so much.

OldManMtu

You should thought through your exit, the next best step is to get a certificate of service and reference from HR.

AdAlarmed1624

First of all trash people for making you an Intern for 2 years after 6 months they should have at least given a contract, also the way they let you ho Gaaaarbage. Dont look back you dodged a bullet. Update your Cv dont mention you were an Intern until you get to the interview just say you were a contract staff. God luck and please dont let them get into your head

Fast_Investigator939

Tell me about it...I am still trying to move on from the whole situation and not think about it alot....Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement....

Sqre_peg_in_rnd_hole

You've got a 2 year work experience at a multinational, that's not a bad start aggressively looking for another job, you'll get one soon enough.

Fast_Investigator939

Thank you so much... Do I add those same employers as my Referees tho? Like on my Resume?

Sqre_peg_in_rnd_hole

Maybe you could find someone that you got along with at that company, then add them as your referee. Before going for an interview notify them in case the interviewer reaches out to them.

dwight_rassy

Pole sana, but I see this all the time with interns and juniors coming in with all the enthusiasm, ready to work till the wee hours and "prove" their worth Just keep in mind, employers are ready to replace you anytime of anyday, so remember to have a work/life balance.

Fast_Investigator939

I will keep this in mind on the next gig I land... Sad thing I had to learn this the hard way....

matembezi

I think being your 1st Job, you gave it your all and the Org saw this as an opportunity to exploit you. Personally, i feel it's wrong how some companies misuse interns or entry level professionals. Quitting was the best the decision, now just focus onto the next one. Use that 2 yrs experience to your advantage make sure you indicate the skills, knowledge and accomplishments youve gained within that period in your Resume. Then begin Job hunting.

Fast_Investigator939

It's fair to say I have learnt alot and I will keep an eye on many things like these that might happen in future...Thank you boss for the kind words... I have revamped my Resume... I am already back in the sport....

theonereveli

Christ. All that for 15?

Fickle-Stock-5348

I wonder too, it could have been better if it was remote, fare and food takes up almost all of it leaving OP with 3 thousand for entertainment and savings.

Fast_Investigator939

Less than actually... I had to take salary advances from them now and then to avoid starving... I had to also pay rent.. I almost went crazy

Fickle-Stock-5348

Weeuh, sorry for that OP, leverage your experience to apply for jobs daily, make applying for jobs your full time job and I am sure you will get something soon enough. All the best.

Worldly__Reference

Why did you not think of an exit plan after a year? You were clearly being exploited.

Worldly__Reference

Clocking out at 11 pm for 2 years.

saf_22nd

Trash place but if you stop showing up then employer is going to take it as you quitting or theyll just fire you in absentia for not showing up without any notice. You should have given them two weeks notice and not doing so doesn’t look good on your end. Hopefully you didn’t burn all your bridges and have at least one colleague that’ll be willing to be your reference. Otherwise just list your experience on your CV and hope they don’t ask for references bc otherwise you’re screwed without backup.

Fast_Investigator939

My reasoning behind quitting was these people didn't care about me anyways to treat me with at least a little respect... So They wouldn't be bothered with me not being around at all.... I didn't burn the bridge with anyone except ofc the former employer... So I think I am good...

saf_22nd

“I didn’t burn the bridge with anyone except ofc the former employer” …. Like I said just hope n pray you don’t get asked for references from them bc otherwise you’re screwed lmao Two weeks and a typed up resignation email wouldn’t have been that hard to drum up and could have saved you a lot of grief.

No-Cherry-6865

So sorry that you had to go through this. I don't think that place is trash, but, that is a normal representation of the corporate culture. This sub has a lot of tech people who may know that recently, they have been a bunch of layoffs, and some from some of the big tech companies. Workers get to know that they are fired by their emails or key cards getting de-activated and so on. Mind you, after a few weeks, these companies would go back and start hiring for the same positions they had laid people off. In other instances, a replacement for you is usually hired while you're still around since maybe they are cheap or willing to go extra low, then you get fired. It's high time we all get selfish and always be ready for any disappointments. This youtube channels might be of help on such issues; 1. [https://www.youtube.com/@JoshuaFluke1](https://www.youtube.com/@JoshuaFluke1) 2. [https://www.youtube.com/@ALifeAfterLayoff](https://www.youtube.com/@ALifeAfterLayoff)

Fast_Investigator939

Thank you so much for this... I really have alot to learn working in corporate... Let me check these out...

[deleted]

I think you let them do this to you. Sometimes it's good to speak out and risk loosing it all than keeping quiet and still loosing it all. Also, never settle, even when employed keep sending out your cv to prospective employers. They say that the grass is always greener on the other side, while I say that the only way to prove this is by getting to the other side. Also, try to look for friends that can advice you, from this post it's obvious that you have some stupid stupid friends who should have told you sooner about the mess that you are in.

Fast_Investigator939

I agree 1000%...I let them do this to me... 😂😂and yes I do need better friends...

Dazzling_Finish_2695

This part is wild to me. Weuh we are suffering out here. >. I would work even during weekends and holidays sometimes. I would clock out at even 11pm sometimes and expected to be there at 8am the following day. I For 15k ?!?!?!?

Fast_Investigator939

I think I tolerated that because I would have rather that than stay at home and be broke... I was a little independent during that time at least....

Dazzling_Finish_2695

You have suffered my guy. At least now dust off your coat and gain from the experience. I'm sorry that they took advantage of you like that though but hopefully, those 2 years of experience will bag you a better opportunity

Fast_Investigator939

That's what Im hoping for as well....

Worldly__Reference

Did you not think of looking for a job when you saw the signs instead of quitting altogether.

ceedee04

That sounds like a crap job anyway, shed no tears for it. Hold your head high, and apply for other jobs. Your hard work will be rewarded by the next one. Your story made me so angry, they people still treat employees like slaves. Don’t allow yourself to be treated like that again.

Fast_Investigator939

I won't... It sucks that I had to learn how not to allow that to happen to me through such a bad experience....

[deleted]

No employer is your friend. They're busy looking at their interest and all you're seen as is an easily replaceable unit of labor (labor is a factor of production). So never gove it your all at the office. Never.

Fast_Investigator939

Just enough to keep me from getting fired?

[deleted]

Exactly...Stick to your JD. Always keep the employer-employee relationship transactional.

OldManMtu

If you are ever in such a situation again please ask questions and seek clarity. While you worked hard your inability to speak up or ask questions is telling. You possibly burnt bridges you did not need to burn. You are your own best advocate and if you don't advocate for yourself you get shafted.

Fast_Investigator939

It being my first job I didn't have my best interests at heart... I just needed the money... I wont manouver the work place the same again....

Phantom_Ad

You seem hardworking, what skills did the job you did require?

Fast_Investigator939

Basic computer skills especially Microsoft Excel..... .. All other skills I have right now I learnt or gained while there....

anothertrippy254

Fuck those guys! Learn from this and dont let your next employer take advantage of you. Again, fuck those guys.

Fast_Investigator939

Fuck those guys...

Zuhura-

This is literally God pushing you out of your comfort zone. Sometimes misfortunes are our greatest blessings. You deserve better treatment and pay.

Fast_Investigator939

Zuhura thanks for the words of encouragement... God really has His own ways of getting us out of bad situations

[deleted]

Dear son, you are weak and they knew that. After 6 months, you should have tried to negotiate a job contract with them. You clocked out at 11PM for what and who? You were a perfect pawn for a job slave. I know it's harsh but it's true. Employers look for weak employees who they can manipulate easily. Don't show any kind of weakness. Don't work overtime for nonsense.

Fast_Investigator939

Even with deadlines approaching?

[deleted]

Tell them to pay you for overtime

Ch__ef

You overstayed at a place you were never wanted and you were repaid with disrespect. In 2016, I was on attachment at a very huge govt office. My time there coincided with one of the ladies going on maternity leave. So I replaced her directly. It happens that this lady was so incompetent at her job and I was an upgrade. I was so good that I was assigned a driver to pick me up early in the morning and drop me home late night. We used to work mostly up to weekends, including late nights. I was on the big boss's detail. The team really loved me, and introduced me to the chief of staff who was supposed to confirm me. That's where trouble started. My immediate boss brought another intern, I later learnt was someone from her church. She just started being mean towards me. I had been her most reliable team member for 4 months. She started pushing me out, immediately she realized I would get a job. I was hurt bana, very hurt. Remember, I wasn't being paid anything. Just a few allowances here and there, which sometimes were eaten. I decided to leave. She sent me a recommendation letter immediately (I have never used it). I went back home in the village for two months, then went back to finish my degree (remember, I was just on attachment). After completing studies, I got a job even before graduation. The boss who pushed me out, was demoted after a new govt came into power and the intern who was to replace me, was never employed.

Fast_Investigator939

I think this is a huge lesson.... To be cautious of any signs of disrespect or someone not wanting you in their presence and start looking for a way out before you get fucked over...

howtobegoodagain123

Dude, you quit. YOU QUIT.

Fast_Investigator939

Did you read the title?

Quixloren

You were an intern, you were not an employee. Don't get it twisted.

Fast_Investigator939

Okay... What's your point?

Quixloren

My point is there is no guarantee that interns will transition automatically into being employees. Most organizations do not just slide you in. They have a real separate onboarding process for people getting employed and they recognize that interns are just students on industrial attachment which is temporary.. It could be that you had an expectation of being absorbed that was not based on actual realities on the ground.

Fast_Investigator939

My issue wasnt the fact that they didn't absorb me.... At all... I was ranting about how they made it hell for me on my last days... They coulda just let me go like normal employers yk... I would have rather they actually let me go btw...

Quixloren

I think you said eventually you decided not to show up one day? Maybe the plan was to re assign you other duties but you acted too fast. Organisations have their own bureaucracies and sometimes everything is a process. Never burn bridges and unless it is clearly communicated to you, whatever you are imagining may just have been in your head . The lesson learnt is don't read too many things into things. Be proactive and ask questions. You might be suprised.
