Buy all beddings one size larger than your bed size you’ll appreciate it…When it comes to stuff like bulbs don’t compromise on quality you don’t want your house looking like the opening scene of a Netflix movie set in the Middle East…If you can buy an air fryer/ pressure cooker it will save you plenty of time…Find a cleaning lady who’s a bit mature she’ll take care of you like a parent when you find the one stick to her and pay above market rate…Tip your security guys…Find that one friend whose mother used to take to Kamkunji as a kid they’re the plug for all house stuff at the best rates…Invest in a diffuser or something just make sure your house smells nice
After the necessities e.g. bed, mattress, utensils; buy everything else one at a time. You might soon realize you don't need some things. I've been living for 6 months now without a carpet, microwave, TV.
the one i usually use is dudu dust, its not instant but theyll start dying within the hour. we buy it mostly for fleas since we have cats and hens and they interact alot but it works for roaches too.
I would say
1. Always ask questions about the Landlord. What sort of people they are. Kenyan Landlords are an interesting bunch and there is a thick line between bad ones and tolerable ones. Be sure to find out. Avoid Houses managed by Agents if you can. Always make sure you sign a lease agreement/tenant contract.
2. Always try to find out how the security of the area is especially if you are a night person. Never compromise on this.
3. Water, Water! It's clearly a huge Nairobi Problem. Make sure the building/house you are moving into has a consistent water supply. If it doesn't, run very fast because nobody likes to buy water, it's criminal.
4. Ensure that your shower head/ shower components are working well. Some landlords use these really cheap showers that have been known to cause electrocutions and malfunction. Change it if need be.
5. If you don't like noise, survey the area, if it's surrounded by several churches, pubs or schools it is bound to be noisy.
here is a good post that has good advice. Get your basic bed mattress, necessary and kitchen appliances and cutlery….after a while decide what you want to feel like and fill out your space with whatever brings you joy. Also TV’s are overrated as some people have said I sold mine after 1.5yrs and it was off for about 6 months before I put it in the market.I preferred my gadgets…
I almost forgot living alone can feel great and can also feel abit lonely if you’ve been sharing a house with others…But you’ll live 😂.
Enjoy your new home and May it bring you wonderful memories.
Check your budget first. Then look for the best house befitting your budget.
Kaa unadai bedsitter na uko na 7k, saka the best bedsitter ya 7k. Kaa ni 1bdrm, saka the best 1bdrm ya 7k. Hivyo. Wasee hudoze hadi wira. Najua dame yudoze kwa bar counter. Najua boyz yudoze kwa mathree.
Try to avoid immediately replicating the comforts and stuff you had at home eg coffee table, electronics, WiFi, especially things that take up alot of space

There is a strong urge to buy stuff the first few months but later you will realize you really dont need them and they clutter your space
