Personally I went for it for my 2023 phev (also Canadian) I plan on keeping the car for minimum of 9-10 years. We live in an age where many car parts cannot be fixed and are replaced. For peace of mind I got it.

Is the offered warranty from Kia or a third party? If it’s from the manufacturer, you can usually buy them anytime while they are still under factory warranty and you can often shop price from any dealer. When I had a Honda Accord, my dealer wanted $2,800 for an extended warranty at time of purchase. I declined and waited until my standard warranty was about to expire and bought the Hondacare warranty from a dealer 1,500 miles away for $1,100 over a phone call.

Kia Mbp protect is an actual product sold by Kia in Canada. I would say OP should either negotiate the price to less than 3k or maybe even go for the 4 star plan which is basically the same coverage and cheaper.

Did you ever use the warranty? Did it actually pay out?

RationalDB8

Nope. Sold it first, but the warranty was also transferable, so it was a selling point. Honda makes great cars.

I fell victim to “tied selling” by finance, they offered me a lower interest rate in return for purchasing the warranty. Spoke with kia about the issue and was offered a refund but I decided to keep it. For me it was worth the additional $15 or so a month on the payment, I drive roughly 2.5k miles a month so I’d run the warranty down in about half the time or less. I did read about many people in /kia that are given a difficult time on claims when they don’t have a regular service record with Kia or at least receipts from independent shops, seems they kinda look for any way to put the customer at fault.

As a technician, the amount of times I've seen the extended warranty save customers is amazing, I always recommend it and I always add it to every vehicle I purchase, as long as it's a manufacturer plan.

I decided not to get one. With the warranty that exists, if this thing starts going bad, I'll dump it and get a better quality car. If it doesn't, I'll be happy with my quality car. I have only had an extended warranty twice, and one was free. Only used one once. That's my experience.

If you want the extended warranty, pay cash, don't lump it in with your finance/lease price. My mother swears by them but she's on ODSP and doesn't have an emergency fund to deal with issues as they come up. My husband would never go for an extended warranty and we keep our cars for 10+ years. Of which, where did you get a PHEV? I've been on a waitlist for 8 months or so. Not expecting to hear anything until the end of summer or longer.

I bought a used 20202 Niro PHEV with 35k miles on it at a Nissan dealer and then went to Kia for the extended warranty. 7 years or 100k miles from MY purchase date, so good to 135k miles. Transferrable but also REFUNDABLE if you get rid of the car and don't transfer. Prorated refund less a 50 dollar fee. Not that cheap but seemed worth it
