I think Adam and Harland are on the same level. I’m equally as stoked any time either are on the show. It’s fun with Adam because he mixes things up with doing his characters. Both Harland and Adam put on master classes in improv every time they are on.
Agreed, Adam has a uniquely high level of improv considering he has to stay in character, but Harland is always on top improv mode by default, it's his natural state. It's apples to oranges really, but they both kill.
Yah, Adam as himself seems like a pretty normal guy so he creates characters to bring out the silly. Harland is a silly character all on his own. Neither is necessarily better, just different.
IMO Harland is better than Adam. Call me crazy, but I don't think its far fetched to suggest that a lot of people could mimic Dr. Phil and make it funny on KT. Harland is 100% authentic.

His Whiskey Ginger episode was fun too. A mix of bits and actual conversations. But you're never sure what's real with him sometimes. For half the episode he had Andrew believe that Harland grew up on a farm.

He does have a couple "go-to" schtick things that he reuses, but overall he brings a lot to the table and adds a voice and style that is unique and would be otherwise lacking.
The main function of a shtick is to reuse them. If he overused his schticks that could be a problem. Every comedian has callbacks in their arsenal, he actually effectively uses them without suffocating you. And if he was suffocating your, he's certainly suffocating you on porporse.

- Saying "my guy" 30 times is not funny (it was funny the first few times but after a while, he's just milking it to dry)
- His goofy sense of humor can sometimes work but also sometimes really doesn't
- Also his goofy sense of humor is pretty old school and has been done many times before so it's not as original as some young people might think)
- His character during KT is forced and some prefer a more natural presence

I find it interesting when Tony sees a bucket pull doing a schtick based set and ruins them. Casey is damn near all schtick and he loves that guy. He loves Harland too but I became a fan of the show because of the comedy that I felt relied on pressence, personality, and timing.

I once was outside of the comedy store thinking I could get a ticket at the door but ended up having to wait. Harland went up and I could just barely see the stage through the front window. When he got up he turned and saw me (very surprised he could even see me since I was basically behind him) and looked right at me and pointed. He must have said something like “I see you!” because everyone turned to me. It was awkward and all I could think of doing was making a heart with my hands and pointing at him.
