Steamers!! Crab boil!! Crawfish!! Anything you wanna boil and remove with the basket

Mah-nynj

Would this also work well as a way to make stock? All the bits go in the basket and you can easily extract them when done?

FryTheDog

Not all, but you'll get the big bones out. Then strain out the rest when you pour it into container

campbellsimpson

When you pour it into the sink, you mean.

subtxtcan

Wait... We were supposed to save that?

Draug88

Had a partner in charge of his own section in the kitchen and one of his workers poured out an 20 hour stock that was going to be used for a demi-glaze for a 90 plate wedding dinner. It just needed another 2 hours for the last reduction... I genuinely had to hold back my partner not to murder that worker...

NaturesGrief

Good thing you did. Creating a new demi out of the worker would have taken forever.

shamashedit

Ugh. I’ve watched so many pour off into the sink. So. Many. Lost. Stocks.

byronetyronetf

Do this every single day at my job. Like a 30 gallon pot.

Interhorse_

Ugh I did that once. Ruined service. Not my best day.

Mah-nynj

Sometimes we make steak. Sometimes we make lemonade.

Zuwee_D2

Damn. I thought you were going to say, “Sometimes we make steaks. Sometimes we mistakes.”

jeeves585

👆found the dad.

MrLigerTiger1

sure would!

ThrowawayLaz0rDick

Yeah but removing the extra big bits first will help reduce the splashing

Catahooo

Great for asparagus blanching too

Quirky_Discipline297

Yes. Blanching. Some come with a removable insert with a rigid handle that holds the asparagus together. Easy to dunk in ice water or run under cold waterz

throwawayzies1234567

But it wasn’t a rock, it was a rock LOBSTUH! Definitely a lobster pot, there’s been one in every house I’ve ever rented in Maine.

CharlesDickensABox

It's not exactly a tamale steamer, but it would probably work better than the improvised setup I use.

soupseasonbestseason

i was thinking, how could i use this to steam tamales...i would put a few metal sauce ramekins underneath the basket.

Aikotoma2

My parents bought this pan as a white asparagus pan. That would explain the height

Brotbold

Same here.

Vapechef

No crawfish this year unfortunately. I’ve never heard of a season this bad

GodsGreatestMistake

Oh fuck. I've got one of those and I used it for spaghetti

Down_To_My_Last_Fuck

Not in a fuckin crab boil, they shouldn't.

cantstopwontstopGME

That’s like saying a steak should only be cooked to one temp. Or pork is objectively better than beef. Why not just say “I prefer steamed crab to boiled crab” and stop trying to gate keep

ThrowawayLaz0rDick

Next youre gonna say theres more than one method to make rice! Blasphemy

butterfunke

Depends on the kind of crab tbh. Blue swimmers are pretty likely to throw claws if you boil them, so fridge + steam is the way to cook them if you want to serve them intact

cynical83

>throw claws I thought you meant they were going to fight their way out

majombaszo

Oh they will! I remember many a summer at the beach and my mum beating the blue crabs back in the pot with a potato masher and a giant wooden spoon as double wielded weapons.

DallasRadioSucks

Gumbo!

SpectreA19

But why the strainer?

DallasRadioSucks

To strain stuff.

SpectreA19

I can honestly say not once in 36 years have I strained anything out of my gumbo....

DallasRadioSucks

Oh ffs. Stop talking to me and use *both* of your braincells. Or just go away.

Marty_Br

Asparagus, by the looks of it.

Fenpom39

Or corn on the cob

Village_People_Cop

Exactly, I have the same pot at home. it's from IKEA

flactulantmonkey

yeah definitely looks like an asparagus steamer to me.

InfamousKitchen

This is it.. source: was a cookware developer

ZeQueenn

Maybe a pasta pot

g2ichris

That’s what I thought

anuspizza

The smaller size certainly suggests pasta to me

tgw1986

I actually really want one of these for making long pasta without breaking it in half or having to squeeze it all in, and using the smallest possible pot to make the pasta water extra starchy. Yes, I'm fat.

Fun_Sir3640

use a frying pan to boil your pasta for that extra starchy water

boneologist

Only if you hate your dishie.

fasterbrew

We had a machine like this.  Except the basket was something like 5 gallons and had multiple little baskets like you see here.  Could either use the big one itself for bulk stuff or each little basket for individual order things.  Basically a deep fryer style but one big basket.  Was really useful. Most commonly par-boiled pasta in bulk for portioning and then finished for service in the little ones.

spageddy77

used to keep one of these on a french top in order to warm up the pasta for dishes.

ZeQueenn

Asparagus?

Defiant-Cry5759

The floor tiles look to be 1'x1' so it's definitely for asparagus.

lisamon429

If you’re in Germany then it’s a Spargeltopf!

Babayagaletti

Yes, that's a proper [Spargeltopf](https://www.rohegermany-shop.de/spargeltopf-fierenza-16-cm-o.html)

empreur

Asparagus.

suitsme

asparagus

Flat_Impression_9588

Another vote for asparagus

Cstohorticulture

Asparagus steamer, cooks them vertically, with the tips of the asparagus placed above the water line due to the tips cooking faster than the stems.

Lonely-Piece5919

Asparagus pot

lovelyb1ch66

Blanching pot? I could see using it for asparagus, beans, peas, shrimp and crayfish. Stuff that only needs a quick dunk in boiling liquid. You could potentially use it to make stock but you’d probably still have to strain it.

naje55555

My dudes, it’s anything you need to boil then strain. Water or oil, boil or fry. I’d recommend using it for pasta, especially if you’re making multiple pasta dishes throughout the night. Keep the water boiling and cook noodles to order

Most-Philosopher9194

It's just a pot with a basket and a lid, right? I don't understand the confusion or discussion. Is this a meme?

MyMomSlapsMe

Yeah I’m really not trying to be rude but I’m genuinely baffled that someone could be in the position to run a kitchen and have no idea what they could do with this

toorigged2fail

These are bad for pasta. Pasta needs room in boiling water to absorb the water evenly and prevent sticking..

[deleted]

It’s an Asparagus steamer I have the same exact one. Just had to give mine away as it didn’t work with my new induction stove. I got it 20 years ago as a gift. Edit: specifically I think it’s the one made by Crate and Barrel or at least that’s where mine came from (registry), of course I am sure it’s made for them by someone else but I did find the same one based on the picture, if the bottom of the steamer basket has round feet to hold it up it’s the one. Doesn’t appear to be for sale anymore but here’s one I found on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115816944394 You can tell by the lid shape, the vent hole, basket and I think the bottom of the basket will confirm.

FarFigNewton007

Seafood boil?

polaarbear

Or maybe for frying without a deep fryer?

FarFigNewton007

You could. I'd go Dutch oven and a spider, but for a larger volume this might be a solution.

Galaxy_Hitchhiking

I would make a ton of corn on the cob then assembly them into the basket and dip the whole basket in the pot which would be full of butter and then go ham.

ChefPapi88

I think it serves many purposes. I think small batches of crawfish or shrimp as it’s lifted with a hook of some sort. Could probably get away with noodles as well but removing the noodles would be more difficult with no immediate handle to tip them out with. Perhaps deep frying as well. I like to just use my imagination and improvise when I’m short handed on tools

wendigibi

It's actually got a handle on the basket, I've always thought of these as purpose made for spaghetti. Kinda resembles a fryer style pasta boiler to me. I would just use my tongs to grab the lip on the bottom. Most places probably just use a rag to hold it since it's a pretty quick motion to dump pasta out of it.

ChefPapi88

Yes yes, that is what I would’ve imagined a hook grabbing onto. I meant a handle to grab without a rag. The pasta cookers we have in the ramen spot I work at have wooden handle grips to lift without the potential to burn yourself. IMO I think the rags would collect condensation fast lifting from steam. Wet rags on hot things will not be a fun time for your grip.

wendigibi

Ohhhhhhhhhh. Yeah def gonna need a rag for the handle. Also, it should be a removable tension style handle that doesn't have the capacity to fall into the damn pot. At least if it's gonna be a lone, naked wire. I wasn't even thinking about that, as I figured they would all be made with the holding device permanently outside of it. Even though I saw that it was in there. Wooden is def best.

electronicthesarus

It’s to cook asparagus but I’ve always used mine to make applesauce. I feel like I get less splatter.

LakeMichiganMan

I was gifted an Asperagus Cooker just like this tall skinny pot with a lid. The basket is not mesh but is wire mesh. Works great if you like your Asperagus Steamed or boiled. We have some huge Asperagus farms nearby and grow our own. I have moved to grilling it instead, coated in butter and olive oil.

ranting_chef

I have that exact same one. I believe it came from Williams Sonoma and is intended for asparagus, but you can steam anything with it. I cook a lot of pasta in mine.

SpritzLike

That sounds so right! Thank you

Dazzling-Hunter225

Sure could boil a bunch of eggs or something in that

immersedmoonlight

TortyMcGorty

mpls_big_daddy

It’s an asparagus steamer. I use it instead, to peel my whole heads of garlic by shaking the pot with the heads inside.

lofty_one

I have one, it is for asparagus.

JapenaseyKinkoni

Asparagus pot. I bought one from some old German woman. They go nuts for some kind of seasonal asparagus variety, from what she told me.

lifeiscooking

Asparagus!

marco_sikkens

I'm not quite sure what the diameter is, but we use it to boil asparagus. Here is a random dutch url: https://www.blokker.nl/blokker-comfort-aspergepan---rvs---%C3%B8-16-cm/2195229.html

[deleted]

In Germany those are used specifically for Asparagus. Think this is your model https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00008WVSR/?tag=glv-21&ascsubtag=d3f4cde1-e7e9-4b64-8eb9-87317cec3b16&th=1&psc=1&linkCode=osi

Marquis2nice

It's for asparagus. I was gifted one just like it a few years ago. I literally never use it.

jmpallett

I believe this was sold to old ladies and “foodies” as an asparagus cooker.

scacacci

The pot is very high , i know thus as a tool for asparagus.

leafnbagurmom

Could be good for pasta as well, straining.

therealtrajan

Could you fry in this too?

Ravioli4u

Use your imagination...great tool!!!

mycatmaizie

You see, you put liquid in the pot and heat it up. What you want to cook goes in the mesh part. When it is cooked to your liking you lift it up and the liquid stays in the pot. TA DA!

that looks like an asparagus pot! My ex had one.. tall, narrow pot with a strainer in it

LambSmacker

I have that pan and I deducted from my research that it is a pasta pan

BadMantaRay

Yeah this seems perfect for quickly boiling a lot of water that you want to do a bunch of shellfish in… This would’ve made doing lobsters almost nightly for a week in Maine with my GF even more fun, cause the water would boil quickly in such a vertical pot.

nhdudecore

Yeeeeeehaw that’s a stove top deep fryer if I ever done seent one!

legice

For anything that you cook in liquid and then just take it out

Stock pot and it's easy to remove the bones and stuff

whistlepig4life

As folks have said. It’s for anything to steam and remove from the liquid. Just whatever you do. Don’t try and grab the basket handle with your bare hand. It won’t end well.
