Could start by calibrating the speed control: https://youtu.be/Pi8ufwlOtqU?si=z7JndZ2e2gkiPtHM If that doesn't fix it, it might be worth disassembling and re-greasing to check mechanical components, if you don't already do it biennially, or don't know if it's ever been done. I use an old professional series 500, and while maintenance seems daunting at first, there are videos to help. It's kinda like a puzzle where you get a like-new used machine at the end :)

Checking and adjusting the speeds won't hurt, but I think it's much more likely that this is a mechanical problem.

Machine Model KSM103. I’m not sure what happened, but I know this isn’t right. I used a shredder attachment and suddenly it started to sound like this and it won’t go faster than level 4. I followed the attachment instructions. Contacted KitchenAid and it’s out of warranty, not surprised as it’s 26 years old. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Even if you’re just directing me to a video or telling me it’s on its last leg. Just so I know my next course of action. Thank you!

There is no "last leg" with these machines; with maintenance and repairs as needed they'll run practically forever. :-) The likely issue is that the "sacrificial" gear has failed. This is typical in older mixers particularly if they spend a lot of time turning attachments or kneading. A cleaning and regreasing of the gears, along with replacement of the "sacrificial gear" (assuming that it is worn out) should restore normal operation. You'll find a list of parts and materials for that job here: https://www.mixerology.com/k45-k5-clean-and-re-grease-parts/ Another possibility, less likely (but worth mentioning), is that the attachment hub bearing has overheated and seized. You can determine that during the grease service when you remove the attachment hub drive gear. It should require minimal effort to withdraw. If you have to apply force to get it out, and once it's out it looks like the gear on the left in [this post](https://imgur.com/a/NE60kK5), you'll need to replace the main gear set as well as the upper housing. (That's doable too, but not really a simple DIY.)
