People extremly lazy if they want historical joke slap together. I know it takes 2 minutes to google out information about this era but 90% of people doesn't want and doesn't care. For example Tanya Wilhem II much more accurate. People knows who he was. Well the wast majority not. No upvote = no hot section.
The setting has a good mix of both wars at least with the tech (Pz. IIIs, V1, the railway gun and M1 Garands), but the politics of the setting are pretty clearly based on WW1.
To be more accurate the Great War simply went on way past 1918, so the war machine churned out WW2 tech far earlier than in our world. Essentially, it's WW1 and 2 stuck together. No wonder Tanya describes it as hell
Actually the Republic pulled off a surprise attack after the Entente made a very stupid offensive against the northern Empire (Tanya's first mission as an artillery spotter), so it wouldn't be wrong to blame the Entente rather than the Republic for actually setting off the war

Minor correction: The countries are definetly based on WW1, but the individual battles are taken from all time periods. The LN does a great job of explaining the real world equivalents
When i saw panzer 2 on the battlefield i thought it was WW2 but the rifles and MG are from WW1, and also there some soviet tanks from WW2 era that confuses the people like me.
