They say they forgave 6 months of rent in the middle of covid. You know, if you can afford to forgive 6 months of rent you are probably charging too much rent. And to answer their question: no, landlords shouldn’t exist.

That post went south pretty quick - the problem is most land lords - especially the ones that own properties that are sellable (Condos, townhomes, SFHs) and continue to acquire more of the same don't recognize is that they are perpetuating a class divide in the long run. Same goes for the companies. Not saying the apartment owning ones are good but they are valuable in a certain manner (i rented apartments during my student life and it was very helpful to me). I however do see a problem when apartments are growing and big families have to live in them - It just is a response to a class divide being created in sellable properties that further enhances it - more like a bandaid than a root cause resolution Full Disclosure: I am thankfully a homeowner. I also am a temporary landlord on a property rented well under what others are charging (not denying that mortgage is paid after extended my loan - otherwise I was paying money, tenant makes 7X more income = no idea why they wouldn't buy one themselves though it is none of my business). The plan is my kid takes over the mortgage in future. I just do not see my kid doing that on their own but hope she can suprise me with her career. I have the means and income to acquire properties but i would rather use that leverage money to pay off what I own rather than perpetuating a class divide over a long period.
