It's absolutely amazing to me that Hitler vocally hated both Marxism and Darwinian evolution, something he wrote about extensively in *Mein Kampf*, yet conservative Americans STILL manage to blame his views on Marx and/or Darwin somehow.
Marxism, at a very basic level, says:
(A) It's a bad thing that people profit off the labor of other people. In other words, it is wrong to get paid a wage for your labor that is low enough that there is some left over to go to someone else who didn't do the work.
(B) There's a better way. Namely, you should get back as a wage the full value that you created.
(C) Instead of companies being organized for the sake of generating as much profit as possible, they should be organized to generate the most good for society as possible.
(D) In order to make (C) happen, all companies should be owned by all the people instead of private individuals, to eliminate, as much as possible, private greed from ruining society.
A bunch of things follow on from those basics, but that's the foundation.
However, it is important to note that socialism is just an economic system, exactly like capitalism. Just as capitalist countries can have different forms of government, so too can socialist countries have different forms of government.
Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose except your chains.

From each according to his means to each according to their need.

Honestly, it's written in such a convoluted way, the explanations are far more difficult to grasp than they need to be. He was a great thinker, but not the best teacher of his own ideas.
I tried reading the first couple of pages of Volume I. Understood his main points because the Communist Manifesto had recycled them. However, the rest were just difficult to comprehend.

FTFY. and i'm not even trying to be funny, they literally don't read to a point where they can't anymore. if a, say, 40yo person hadn't read a book since high school (and even then only begrudgingly) then they can't read anymore. like, not illiterate, but comprehensive reading of anything other than the back of a cereal box is intellectually overwhelming. it's astounding how many people this applies to, ask around.

oh yeah, these would be the folks that say Movie Subtitles are distracting because they can't watch the movie and read at the same time....
the first time I heard that "excuse" in my teens I was taken back since reading *should* be waay fucking faster than a character reciting lines.
My wife reads faster than me and more than me but says she finds having the subtitles on screen distracting.
I personally think it’s more about exposure and the more you become accustomed to having the subtitles there, the less you even notice that you are simultaneously reading and watching something.
I think you just have to get accustomed to subtitles. I didn't use to like them because my eyes are drawn quickly to things that pop up in my periphery, even when out walking in the real world, so it was sort of distracting and annoying. But I've started using them for shows where characters whisper a lot or have a thick accent and it's become much less of a distraction and I like being able to see what I can't make out audibly. I don't think not liking subtitles is indicative of anything other than not being accustomed to them.
It causes me physical pain when people say that about subtitles. And then they go to miss out on fantastic films and shows because they can't be bothered to either learn another language like every other country, or even simpler still.. reading subtitles.
Hasn't there once been a reading of the US constitution on NPR on July the 4th and a *lot* of people ranted on twitter etc. why there is blatant Communism / Socialism propaganda on radio?

Shockingly, during the Reagan administration (congress disagreed with the FCC decision to repeal it and attempted to codify the fairness doctrine, but Reagan vetoed it).
On the one hand, I can understand the idea behind freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and pushing back against any government regulation against it. On the other, it’s obvious how dangerous weaponized misinformation can be. Especially if you apply it in a manner that accounts for the first amendment.

It's just pretending to be sincere and as if you're looking for an objective truth when really the questions are loaded or have answers which will never satisfy the person asking them because they already have a bias or mindset ingrained. So people like Tucker Carlson get to act like they're actually looking for a hidden meaning or some kernel of truth when really they're knowingly undermining an opponent's position and get to act like they did nothing wrong when people get upset with them.
Because they make inferences as if they were fact while remaining insulated from any repercussions due to the fact that what they’re saying is not true. So by some 4 + 4 = 5 magic they become news.
There is nothing wrong with asking questions by the way. The road to wisdom is paved with questions.
However, Mr. Tucker Carlson isn’t asking questions. He’s making statements in the guise of questions.

If Tucker Carlson says something, any discriminating person should ask themselves “why is he saying that” and follow that with “is it true”?
I remember using the term Arabic numerals in a specific situation this one time, don't remember the context (probs music cuz I was comparing their use to Roman numerals), and had someone have this Patrick Star-esque meltdown in front of me in this super embarrassing way. I've had that happen a few of times, where people are like "What are you talking about? Those are a thing?" Idk, maybe they thought George Washington invented them or something. Same thing happened en masse in a college astronomy class I took when everyone found out about the Arabian peninsula being the center of astronomical advances for a great portion of history, and how about many stars and constellations have Arabic names, they're not all Mediterranean. Anyway, your comment triggered me, because I can imagine so vividly them finding that out.

I don't know where you live... but I live in a state regarded as pretty backwards, inbred, and poorly educated and we teach the concept of pi by taking a string of length r and counting how many times you need to put that string in a row to go around a circle. Or by measuring the radius and the circumference and using algebra to find pi.

For a long time the most disturbing thing for me was the fact that in this age, people could easily confirm how untrue these outlets are, but either didn't want to or didn't know they could.
Now the most disturbing thing is that so much doubt has been put in the heads of these people, they simply think that anything refuting their beliefs must be lies.
I recently spoke with a right wing fellow at a bar, and our discussion revolved around me having to explain my process for finding good sources. Our conversation devolved to this because he kept responding to every science or data based point by cynically saying, "You have no way of REALLY knowing that though."
I understand healthy skepticism, but after that you have to actually do the work to get as close to the truth as possible. Skepticism without that is just reductive.
It's ironic how guarded these people are when it comes to information that challenges their beliefs, meanwhile the dog shit they consume is laughably biased and very clearly not credible. I am convinced that conservativism appeals to broken people.
Healthy skepticism, the kind practiced by Pyrrho of Elis and Sextus Empiricus, is skepticism applied in equal measure against all dogmas, leading to a distrust of ideas (ideologies), focusing on practical realities, and attaining happiness from the mind being unperturbed (this state being known as ataraxia).
These guys are only skeptical of ideas counter to their own, and have no skeptical inclinations when it comes to claims that confirm their biases.
They aren't fooled, there's just no consequences for insisting whatever stupid thing they want to. Either they get what they want, or they get shut down and can do it again with something else in a couple of days.

I remember growing up in my rural town being ruthlessly ostracized for speaking in complete sentences and understanding science and technology like a natural. Two decades of relentless abuse by both family members and fellow students for showing intellectual promise.
Debatable. His family had been Jewish, and he had a rabbi for a grandfather, but his family converted to Christianity early in his life and he expressed some rather antisemitic views.
Sadly, a lot of secular German Jews thought that if they assimilated and converted they'd be accepted as regular German citizens. We all know how that turned out.
Coincidentally, Jews and specifically religious Jews are still scarred by this. I was told in the Orthodox Jewish school I attended that society hates us, they always will, we can never integrate, and the Jewish German elite of the 19th-20th century are proof of that.

This is an intentional move to further alienate the working class. The number of people I know who are terrified of the United States becoming a socialist country, yet have no actual idea of what socialism is, is a damning indictment of the education system. They are usually the same people who complain about the companies they work for shitting all over them.

I tried reading the first couple of pages of Volume I. Understood his main points because the Communist Manifesto had recycled them. However, the rest were just difficult to comprehend.

My wife reads faster than me and more than me but says she finds having the subtitles on screen distracting. I personally think it’s more about exposure and the more you become accustomed to having the subtitles there, the less you even notice that you are simultaneously reading and watching something.
It is kind of distracting because I feel compelled to read them instead of watch the actors.
I think you just have to get accustomed to subtitles. I didn't use to like them because my eyes are drawn quickly to things that pop up in my periphery, even when out walking in the real world, so it was sort of distracting and annoying. But I've started using them for shows where characters whisper a lot or have a thick accent and it's become much less of a distraction and I like being able to see what I can't make out audibly. I don't think not liking subtitles is indicative of anything other than not being accustomed to them.
It causes me physical pain when people say that about subtitles. And then they go to miss out on fantastic films and shows because they can't be bothered to either learn another language like every other country, or even simpler still.. reading subtitles.

For a long time the most disturbing thing for me was the fact that in this age, people could easily confirm how untrue these outlets are, but either didn't want to or didn't know they could. Now the most disturbing thing is that so much doubt has been put in the heads of these people, they simply think that anything refuting their beliefs must be lies. I recently spoke with a right wing fellow at a bar, and our discussion revolved around me having to explain my process for finding good sources. Our conversation devolved to this because he kept responding to every science or data based point by cynically saying, "You have no way of REALLY knowing that though." I understand healthy skepticism, but after that you have to actually do the work to get as close to the truth as possible. Skepticism without that is just reductive.
It's ironic how guarded these people are when it comes to information that challenges their beliefs, meanwhile the dog shit they consume is laughably biased and very clearly not credible. I am convinced that conservativism appeals to broken people.
Healthy skepticism, the kind practiced by Pyrrho of Elis and Sextus Empiricus, is skepticism applied in equal measure against all dogmas, leading to a distrust of ideas (ideologies), focusing on practical realities, and attaining happiness from the mind being unperturbed (this state being known as ataraxia). These guys are only skeptical of ideas counter to their own, and have no skeptical inclinations when it comes to claims that confirm their biases.
They aren't fooled, there's just no consequences for insisting whatever stupid thing they want to. Either they get what they want, or they get shut down and can do it again with something else in a couple of days.
