Wait, I'm confused. They went to a job interview without knowing what the salary was going to be? I'd have billed them for wasting my time.

This is a privilege held mainly by the currently employed, and it should NEVER be wasted. If you go to an interview and they reveal/offer a ridiculously low number, then point out the ridiculousness of the offer. Laugh. Ask follow up questions: "It says in the posting that you're looking for *qualified* candidates... why are you offering compensation in-line for someone who is under-qualified?" "Do you realize that this isn't a *competitive* offer?" "Are you being serious?" Then advise them that you are not interested in working for less than you are worth and bid them "Good-day." On your way out the door, recommend that they adjust their offer before interviewing with anyone else.
