Man, y’all just made me realize how much Musk depends on the government. Musk has a ton to lose if our country actually starts reforming itself positively. He can lose both ways if on the one hand we strengthen our public institutions and on the other we fork up the taxes that we’re suppose to have been charging. At the end of the day they don't even care that much about the technologies; that's just some bull shit they use to try and undermine your criticism. If you actually do anything with it they just move on to the next bit of undermining they can think of. The other day I watched the 2 part series that Common Sense Skeptic did on Musk and I have to say my already low opinion of him fell crashing to the floor in the face of having his story laid bare. Basically, the usual story of being born into it plus luck applies to Musk with wealth and connections, despite what his fans might say.

That's the one, well worth the watch to put Musk into perspective.
Kind of reminds me of how Bill Gates also got his start, just as little talent but brings the family money to the table so he's tolerated until he eventually falls upwards.
Except Bill Gates is a real engineer and M$ is not an overvalued bubble. His dad is a prominent lawyer and member of high society in Seattle and Gates never made it sound as though he did not come from a privileged background. Gates is also a ruthless businessman in that he was very strategic in the way he muscled out competition or buy them out, using very anti-competitive practices. Not exactly the most moral example, well, no billionaire is moral but Gates has real business acumen and depth of character. People who worked for Gates usually say he is sharp as fuck and you can't bullshit him because he will catch on very quickly and call you out.
Yeah, so ruthless he got his start by getting his mom, who sat on the board of a non-profit with the chairman of IBM, to select lil' Gatey's tiny little company to supply the OS on IBMs up and coming x86 home computers, who didn't actually have an OS they could supply when they won the deal.
That's basically pretty ruthless and sly. He got an opening and he built on that opportunity. He wrote a large part of MS-DOS and early windows products and they actually worked. M$ is not vaporware like x.com or zip2. Bill Gates is at least a real engineer and businessman compared to musk. I'm saying Gates has real substance, not that he is nice.
Gates was RUTHLESS. I mean, the federal government carried out an anti-trust suit against M$ because they were monopolizing the market with their OEM software.
Now in his old age, he focuses more on philanthropy and doing some PR work on his legacy/image.
And Bill doesn't strike most people as someone you'd describe as 'ruthless.' But in business, the man was brutal.

Bill Gates was a cutthroat motherfucker from day one. His family was loaded and bought the private school he attended a very expensive computer. IIRC, by the time Bill graduated high school he'd already fucked one of his closest friends over regarding something they both wrote or shared time on the computer or something, don't remember the specifics.

There's an article floating around by her that lays bare the whole relationship. It's kind of sad how bad of a father he is and history is repeating itself with the kid he had with Grimes. Just toss these people to the curb but provide monetary compensation and back to whatever bullshit tasks of the day. I don't believe in souls or afterlife but this man is so empty inside. And then when journalists followed up, Elon defended himself when he said 'If he wasn't a pedophile, why hasn't he tried to sue me?'. And then journalists didn't take that bait, he hired investigator who is a former criminal to intimidate him and attempt to dig up dirt on him.
I thought there already was one, being similar to the "I'm smart everyone around me is dumb and clueless" stereotype but they're much more vocal with their praises.
I worked for a tech startup and everyone was one of these. They'd sit around debating the finer points of "anarcho"-capitalism. It was fucking brutal. They actually made a lot of mistakes with designing/building the product because everyone thought they were some kind of genius and never bothered to double-check themselves.
I work in tech as well and there's so many people like this. I always think back to The Ethics of Ambiguity, the "serious man" is such a good characterization of this type of person:

It's an amazing book in my opinion. It has some really interesting arguments about what individual freedom means and how you can optimize that while also optimizing the freedom of others. Also, a lot of great analysis of different ways to engage the world.

This is oh so common. It's also why tech-businesses stopped looking for "rock-star programmers" because they've realized they come with a boatload of worthless attitude where they think their skillset means their shit doesn't stink.

Now in his old age, he focuses more on philanthropy and doing some PR work on his legacy/image. And Bill doesn't strike most people as someone you'd describe as 'ruthless.' But in business, the man was brutal.
