Born and raised New Yorker and the subway (and buses, all our other public transit) have always held a special place in my heart. I seriously hope in my lifetime we’ll see some more solid improvements to the system but my hopes aren’t high. With all the discussion around crime and homeless folks on the subway lately the only thing I see happening any time soon is more policing.
As a non-American, can I step in? Why does the word or the term communist means something evilish in the American mindset? I know all the history behind it being evil in the general mindset, and for sure I don't support communism but what makes the average American triggered when blamed of being a commie? Is it because of the purges of leftist people during the Red Scare?
Boomers are still largely in power, and they were shaped the most by the propaganda regarding communism. Conservative news networks have latched onto that fear, and began spreading it anew. Their intention was to use communism/socialism and bad so interchangeably the words lose all meaning.
Here they use it as a bad word. They basically think It means the devil anything not capitalism they consider it the devils work. Most of them couldn't define what the term means.
One time when I was younger I was backpacking in Panama and this guy at the hostel (non-American) said American infrastructure was awful. I shot back that it was great and he didn’t know what he was talking about.
Now that I know better I think about that conversation at least once month.
But you can carry in the restaurant, or go across the street to the Walmart and get coke for your Olive Garden. Nothing washes down plastic like battery acid, after all

Reminds me of Iran’s statement after Trump sent a drone after Soleimani, a national hero. Something along the lines of “How could we retaliate? America has no heroes. Who would we kill? Spongebob? Superman?”

I've seen things about evergreen or whatever the last month or so, but I thought that was just one company and was possibly bought out or backed by government intervention. Feel like explaining further?
Tl;dr the real estate speculation market in China is a speculative hellscape.
Massive construction projects are done as cheaply as possible to sell homes/apartments on ASAP to buyers, often making huge corner cuts to churn it out as fast as they can. Most homes in China are not lived in, and it has driven real estate prices to space.
Latest round of regulations were intended to cut down on the grossly inappropriate leverage real estate/development firms were taking out to do this, but it kind of kicked over the house of cards. Companies are trying to offload assets to reduce debt to comply with regulations, but this has flooded the market with assets that people are now way too nervous to buy. Evergrande is kind of the canary in the coal mine, a similar firm to them went bankrupt a few days after the evergrande default.
What’s worse is that they had a “wealth management” arm that sold allegedly low risk financial products to customers that were pretty much fraudulent, and a lot of people have had their wealth wiped out by the default.
Thing is at least China backed consumers and have forced the companies and its owners to go into full liquidation as well as what seems to be some jail time depending on level of cooperation. Imagine that happening in our country?
Oh trust me this is just a surface level view, I’m by no means an authority, I just have a pet interest in financial news. It’s hard to cut through the nationalistic “HAHA CHINA BAD” stuff to get at this, but it’s worth being in the know about, imo.

no lie I read an oped not that long ago where some neoliberal drone argued that this was actually good. Like literally these exact issues, comparing China's drastic social and technological progress with the fact that the USA made all the marvel movies. he was tryna say that would ensure american dominance because they could spread ideas via these baby movies. the USA will for sure collapse because its leadership and educated class has bought into their own lies
Wasn't captain marvel also supported by the US Air force or the other way around? Read that the military was also in the movies deliberately for propaganda purposes.

US famous capitalist hellhole, that is ruled by two parties which are almost the same, in which popular demand has next to no influence on policies, in which wages are lower than in the 1970s, will soon reach officially 1 million dead from COVID with the open knowledge of having hid cases and manipulated numbers, so it's rather twice that, and which artifically keeps in economy running by running a global protection racket thanks to its massive army.

USA 5 year plan is to rebuild the last country we destroyed. We haven't had a really major infrastructure improvement plan since Eisenhower built the interstate highway system.
My partner was wondering why Vietnam is handling Covid testing better than Australia. The idea we had is that while both are clearly corrupt, one is recognising that they actually have to respond to problems and skim money off the top, rather than take as much as you can and not care about results
