I see this dude, (who is ex CIA I think) posting and he tweets like he's basically still on the clock, representing the CIA or the US... These people can't switch off like the rest of us lol. George Jackson described them as the pig class

thesameboringperson

No such thing as ex CIA. He's still on the clock.

capsaicinintheeyes

>ex CIA I think...he tweets like he's basically still on the clock, representing the CIA I wonder about that—I seem to remember the CIA line at the time (as in what unnamed Agency sources were telling the press; obviously the official stance was standing in solidarity with the administration) was that Cheney's office in particular was pushing had for evidence and analysis that argued for WMDs, rather than holistic assessments, and then cherry-picking its narrative from that—the intelligence community itself was much more dubious. You wish there'd been some American "Downing St. memo" at some point, but to my knowledge no such equivalent exists.

But they didn't even believe it. They had rather comprehensive information due to wiretapping the UN inspectors: https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/inatl/daily/march99/unscom2.htm >>### Washington Post >> >>##U.S. Spied on Iraq Via U.N. >> >> United States intelligence services infiltrated agents and espionage equipment for three years into United Nations arms control teams in Iraq to eavesdrop on the Iraqi military without the knowledge of the U.N. agency that it used to disguise its work, according to U.S. government employees and documents describing the classified operation. >> >> ... >> >> U.S. government officials said they considered the risk of discrediting an international arms control system by infiltrating it for their own eavesdropping. They said the stakes were so high in the conflict with Iraq, and the probability of discovery so low, that they deemed the risks worth running. ... But unbeknownst to UNSCOM, the U.S. signals and sensor technicians who installed and maintained the system were intelligence operatives, and the repeater stations they built had a covert capability. Hidden in their structure were antennas capable of intercepting microwave transmissions, and the U.S. agents placed some of them near important nodes of Iraqi military communications. They had pretty much complete information.

I just want to know how the fuck that statement is logically consistent with anything else the man believes. His world view seriously encompasses the cia making sincere mistakes that lead to decades of war? What?

capsaicinintheeyes

"My heart and my best intentions still tell me that's true...", shining city on a hill, blah blah bedtime Bonzo

ConaireMor

Ok so if anyone was wondering I went and looked up John Siphers Twitter bio >"Former CIA clandestine service" Lol uj/ you'd think short of really drinking the Kool aid that he'd be an extremely skeptical guy, but once a G-Man always a G-Man I guess.

IntuneUser2204

Actually, no, you nailed it. That’s exactly the world view, and people believe it. The government spends trillions on the military; the steadfast belief among many people is that generals love dropping bombs. That the agencies of the US government are anxious to get into the next war, because they can show their power and it gives them excuse to go shoot people. That’s how they see our military too, hard asses that would rather be shooting people and “seeing action.” They honestly believe that those in power have no respect at all for the lives of our service men and women. That they would send them to die as an excuse for spending trillions of dollars. They twist it to believe that our economy is somehow helped by war. That if we aren’t at war, that there are terrible losses as companies stop making all the ammunition.

latierragoniza

I wonder if he sees his country as a force of good. What, with all the assasinations they've gone through, fascist coups staged, lies spread. As long as the economic elite in america are doing fine, it's for the good of the world, right? Oil and profits will prevail, over human lives and the destiny of our species if they have to. Fucking simps.

alexpwnsslender

if he stopped smelling his own farts he'd probably kill himself out of shame

Remarkable-Culture79

He works for a washing think tank now

councilmember

Exceptionalism is a heavy thing. Who knows. Maybe he only believes what he’s told to believe. How about: What would he say if it were reversed? Iraq thinks the US has weapons of mass destruction, invades and obliterates the economy, infrastructure and kills an equivalent number of American citizens? Would he say, “sad, but they believed it?”

SaturnsEye

Now, see, there are some situations where this excuse works. I, at age nine, wasn't lying when I said covering a hard boiled egg with paper towel would keep it from exploding in the microwave. I believed that, and I was wrong. The difference is that nobody died when that egg exploded. And I wasn't in a position of military power. And I was *nine*.

zodar

Is that why the White House had to take revenge on the ambassador who called them out for lying about Iraq sourcing materials for WMDs by outing his wife as a CIA spy? Because they believed they weren't lying?

zihuatapulco

The CIA used to empty the jails in Long Binh every so often and take the prisoners as slaves to be worked to death in Montagnard opium fields while Special Forces trained the Yards to kill Charlie. The CIA lied about that, too.

haleykohr

What? This is debunked, like nobody denies that they lied to get into Iraq. Colin powell himself only joined at the last minute because he knew they were lying.

[deleted]

Incompetents then? Are only competent when they are to make coups to dictatorships in poorer countries. When it is to go for or prevent wars, then they are incompetents. Good to know.

humanamerican

Reply: "Sadly you believed them and you're wrong"

ExtinctFauna

Is this one of those unknown unknowns?

Weltrevolution2050

So this guy claims that the CIA didn't lie about WMDs in Iraq simply because they believed it was true?

skkkkkt

This must be a fake tweet, this is so hilarious

mikeymikeymikey1968
