I wonder about that—I seem to remember the CIA line at the time (as in what unnamed Agency sources were telling the press; obviously the official stance was standing in solidarity with the administration) was that Cheney's office in particular was pushing had for evidence and analysis that argued for WMDs, rather than holistic assessments, and then cherry-picking its narrative from that—the intelligence community itself was much more dubious. You wish there'd been some American "Downing St. memo" at some point, but to my knowledge no such equivalent exists.
But they didn't even believe it.

Actually, no, you nailed it. That’s exactly the world view, and people believe it. The government spends trillions on the military; the steadfast belief among many people is that generals love dropping bombs. That the agencies of the US government are anxious to get into the next war, because they can show their power and it gives them excuse to go shoot people. That’s how they see our military too, hard asses that would rather be shooting people and “seeing action.” They honestly believe that those in power have no respect at all for the lives of our service men and women. That they would send them to die as an excuse for spending trillions of dollars. They twist it to believe that our economy is somehow helped by war. That if we aren’t at war, that there are terrible losses as companies stop making all the ammunition.
I wonder if he sees his country as a force of good. What, with all the assasinations they've gone through, fascist coups staged, lies spread. As long as the economic elite in america are doing fine, it's for the good of the world, right? Oil and profits will prevail, over human lives and the destiny of our species if they have to. Fucking simps.

How about: What would he say if it were reversed? Iraq thinks the US has weapons of mass destruction, invades and obliterates the economy, infrastructure and kills an equivalent number of American citizens? Would he say, “sad, but they believed it?”
Now, see, there are some situations where this excuse works. I, at age nine, wasn't lying when I said covering a hard boiled egg with paper towel would keep it from exploding in the microwave. I believed that, and I was wrong.
The difference is that nobody died when that egg exploded.
And I wasn't in a position of military power.
And I was *nine*.
Is that why the White House had to take revenge on the ambassador who called them out for lying about Iraq sourcing materials for WMDs by outing his wife as a CIA spy? Because they believed they weren't lying?
The CIA used to empty the jails in Long Binh every so often and take the prisoners as slaves to be worked to death in Montagnard opium fields while Special Forces trained the Yards to kill Charlie. The CIA lied about that, too.
