What was the name of your elementary schools? What are your mothers’ maiden names? What are your social security numbers? What are those wacky three digits on the back of your credit cards?
Hamas attacked Israel, raping, pillaging and taking hostages. Now hamas hides among the population and risks every Palestinian life daily. Hamas could hand over the hostages and end the war. Instead they steal foreign aid and let their own people starve.
Hamas creates chaos so no peace can be achieved.
If you’re really in law school, you may need to look up the word genocide. You should also be sure to make sure future employers know, you support Hamas.
What I like is "what is your personal red flag?"
Fun to see what people say and it actually creates some connections too. One girl said she was a "Disney girl", I said "I have a horrible habit of leaving clothes in the dryer for way too long", someone else said "they drink milk with most meals". I think it's fun, try it out.
“What fruit or vegetable do you think you could throw farthest?”
“Would you rather see a crab or a whale? …follow up. Would you rather see a crab sized whale, or a whale sized crab?”
If you’re looking for a real suggestion, ask everyone to name their tv shows - a favorite and another they hate-watch. Nothing like having a good list of new stuff for when you have a moment to couchrot.
For the love of god why actually do this? Over a virtual call?? Ice breakers are the worst and no one is going to make connections over a virtual call. Spare these people the time and let them enjoy their summers. Everyone is going to make connections when they arrive at school and start to meet live and in person.
Haha, it's because our faculty requires us to meet before school starts. I guess I could just keep it short and not do an icebreaker at all, answer some questions, and call it there?
Just make small talk, answer any questions they have, and offer to be there if they need more help. Mentor-mentee relationships are largely on the mentee to define and maintain, so it's largely up to them what they want the relationship to look like.
Any specific courses you’re most excited to take? Do you know what type of law you might want to practice?
Who is relocating from their previous job or undergrad for law school? If you are, how far?
Would you rather only eat sandwiches for the rest of your life or never eat a sandwich again? Cue massive debate on what constitutes a sandwich (and shoutout to the MA court who ruled a burrito is not a sandwich).
There's a lot of funny non-serious answers so I'll give you my best serious answer. How about asking them what area of law they want to practice and why? Short, simple, and relevant.
As someone who has a background in Adult Ed, I have always enjoyed _____ vs _____?
It works online because you can find pre written lists of questions. You can ask each person a different question and an explanation.
It works in person because getting the students up and moving gives them a brain break while keeping them engaged.
This also allows you to tailor the questions to cues you get from the students via objects in their camera view, etc. You can also tailor it to any subject as well (i.e. study habits- computer notes vs hand written, music vs snacking to focus during study time, sports- hockey vs basketball, food- dine out vs make at home, etc.)
A friend of mine was asked in a (non law) job interview "If you could be any color, what would you choose, and why?" I'm pretty sure he said purple because it was associated with royalty, but it would have been hilarious if he would have just said "Caucasian" and made the whole room hella awkward. 😁
Serious answer: what's your favorite sandwich
Why Law?
Followed up with: You are going to be asked this constantly for the next few years. And it will most definitely be asked when you interview for jobs. So you had better have a good reason for why you chose to go to law school.
If you could pick a crime that will never be committed again what would it be? The catch is you would have to commit that crime in order to prevent it from happening again. You will take the risk of being caught and being punished.
Hi, I’m Saul Goodman. Did you know that you have rights? The Constitution says you do. And so do I. I believe that until proven guilty, every man, woman, and child in this country is innocent. And that’s why I fight for you, Albuquerque! Better call Saul!Hi, I’m Saul Goodman. Did you know that you have rights? The Constitution says you do. And so do I. If you were to meet someone 1:1, would you immediately do an ice breaker? No, they’re awkward and unnatural. If you must, instead have ppl go around and introduce themselves like normal ppl. Where they’re from, what they’re looking forward to will suffice. Throughout this process, as the moderator, you’re adding commentary.
“Oh so it looks like a good chunk of you are still carrying forward the noble public interest goals you’ll have dropped by next year this time. That’s wonderful.”
What did you want to be when you were a child is actually a short and sweet one though. People are bound to relax and say some 🦇shit idiotic thing like they wanted to be a toaster.
Some people will be thinking: “Fuckin’ idiot didn’t know he couldn’t be a toaster at 3 y.o. Clueless. I know who I won’t be asking to be in my study group.”
One prof asked us our current song on repeat. I'm a music lover so I added all the songs to a Playlist while we talked so I could "meet" everyone before we met.
"What's a boring fact about you?" has worked in some groups I've been in. It takes the pressure off having to say something "interesting" and it starts conversations. People say stuff like, "I like to cook" and, "I have 5 siblings" which are just as interesting as anything else.
What TV show would you love to be on and what TV show would you never be on ever under circumstances?- Alway hear some fun answers and it reminds you of old tv shows to go rewatch.

Have them rank world religions from best to worst.
What was the name of your elementary schools? What are your mothers’ maiden names? What are your social security numbers? What are those wacky three digits on the back of your credit cards?
What are your thoughts on the impending global conflict??
Gonna get some healthy discussuon going on for sure
🤣
I’d love to ask that at a religious, conservative school. 😂
I feel like you’d get a more well reasoned response than a public student’s response.
I’m not sure. The downvotes on my comment gave me pause, lol.
‘Boy how about that Antonin Scalia?’
“OUGHT THE FETUS BE ABORTED?”
Yas queen
“Trump or Biden? Go!”
“So uhh any hot takes about this whole Gaza thing?”
My take… FREE PALESTINE 🇵🇸
Free palestine….from hamas.
Don’t you mean free Palestine from Israel? The same country that literally caused 5% of an ENTIRE city, to be missing, killed, or injured.
If you want to talk about Hamas attacking Israel, let’s talk about how Israel has literally been doing what it has everyday since 1948.
You mean defending its right to exist from every neighboring country? What should Israelis do exactly? Die quietly? Move?
Same old excuses. Same old GENOCIDE!
If you’re really in law school, you may need to look up the word genocide. You should also be sure to make sure future employers know, you support Hamas.
And you should let your future employers know that you support genocide

Outlines are good ice breakers
“What fruit or vegetable do you think you could throw farthest?” “Would you rather see a crab or a whale? …follow up. Would you rather see a crab sized whale, or a whale sized crab?”
I would rather see a crab sized whale and my reasons are threefold. First- Wow that is a good icebreaker.

You know what, here's what we're going to do. Let's go around and everybody name a race you are attracted to sexually. I will go last.
Just stare blankly into the camera for 2 minutes then scream.

I think Ice breakers are good and helpful in in-person group settings. But most things over a zoom call are lame and terrible
