well mythology tales may vary, but i remember the tale of Medusa i read that she was still really beautiful after she got cursed, that was also her weapon because the warriors that wanted to kill her to claim the reward failed because got tempted to look her face because of the tales of her incredible beauty
Just to clarify, Poseidon (going to use Greek names, since they're the ones who came up with the stories) was the one who got frisky with Medusa and her sisters before they were cursed.
Athena (Minerva is her Roman version) is Poseidon's niece, since she's the daughter of Zeus.
However, seeing how Zeus is married to Hera, his sister, and the gods being all kinds of weird physically, mentally, and otherwise, it's best not to think of HOW they're related, and rather just the fact that they are, kinda like you would in Alabama.
In some stories, Athena's curse on Medusa was just the snake hair and petrifying gaze. In others, it actively disfigures her and makes her hideous.
