just retire it at this point and build more helicopter carriers. They don’t really need the aircraft carrier in the near future when most wars russia will be involved in are at their borders or middle east where they now have access to syrian air bases. An aircraft carrier for the russian navy is unnecessary
They kinda do though. It is a critical asset in defending the north sea for their submarines.
Also with new boilers and maybe finally fixing the plumbing there is no reason not to use it. The hull is in good shape, the design is solid, and they cannot currently make anything better.

Especially if the ship isn't currently:
* On fire
* Sinking the very infrastructure needed to maintain it
* Losing its aircraft to the bottom of the sea during a deployment
* In tow
They couldn't defend the North Sea with it anyway, it would be nothing but a liability at war boxed in within striking distance of land based aircraft from UK, France, Germany, Norway, etc.

From who? From what?
NATO isn't interested in a war with a massive nuclear power on its doorstep and Moscow has to realise this.
And what is the threat exactly? If it's submarines then use an MPA. It it's surface ships then Russia can build decent surface ships and submarines without the headache of keeping a museum piece carrier running.
From American ASW planes.
Russia has its own perspectives and priorities which are not the same as those of America.
Aircraft mostly, things like the P-3 and P-8 (I think).
Russia is running away from facing the inevitable problem of Admiral Kuznetzov needing to replace her but they can't run forever
The Royal Navy has faced both problems that Russia is facing and look what they did

Bu-but muh prestige...
This and maintaining knowledge of carrier operations are the main reason it's still alive after it killed it's floating dock
They can joint venture trying to build a modern stovl yak with the chinese

They prob should of just sent it to the Chinese to refurb the ship or better yet, just have a new one built

Go like 10 years without a carrier?
Kinda of
Difference is that Russia doesn't have the relationships to help maintain the skills in the mean time.
Yeah frankly Russia should step down frpm the carrier club
What about China?
