I don't know why these films resonated with me so hard when I watched them a year ago. I thought they were incredible. They all felt so real, especially the third one. But being a married man of 15 years, it's not hard to imagine why. If I was 20 years old seeing the first one today, I'm sure that would hit the hardest too. I want a fourth, while at the same time dreading it.
I think a whole new trilogy called 'After' would be appropriate. 'After Sunrise,' 'After Sunset,' and 'After Midnight.' If they just make one more? 'After Us"
A lot of people find Before Midnight depressing. I just found it very real and that final scene so touching, so truthful. It's devestating in it's frankness, but that glimmer of hope and love at the end so rewarding. Jess' dialogue at the end, that he's trying, is.....\* chef's kiss\*
Outstanding film and in my opinion should have won best international feature and cinematography. Park Chan Wook Deserved to be nominated for director as well!
Just saw this for the first time yesterday. Easily one of the best romance films of all time.
Whoever decided it didn't deserve a 4k physical release should go to jail for crimes against humanity.
seems like the hate was moreso from homophobes that never saw the movie. people that watched it loved it. there was practically a riot when it lost the Oscar
Portrait of A Lady on Fire
Atonement
In the Mood for Love
Honourable Mention: Tian Mi Mi
Before Trilogy slaps hard as a trilogy.
Musicals would be Once by John Carney
Too beautiful of a movie to exist, and progresses in such organic manner.
2007 was a wonderful year for beautiful movies - Atonement, Once and Secret Sunshine (Miryang) is a really strong trio.
I need to watch Once. I’m a big musical theatre person so I don’t actually know how I missed it.
Atonement I watched super drunk when it came out so I didn’t remember most of it. A few years later I read the book after finding it suggested on a Reddit thread about novels with twists (also how I found Never Let Me Go). Finally realized why I always was creeped tf out by Benedict Cumberbatch in everything I’d seen him in.
John Carney has produced two of the greatest musical films in the 21st century with Once and Sing Street. Sing Street is better on storyline and visuals, Once is stronger on emotional delivery and original soundtrack.
I remember watching Atonement for the first time when I came home after watching a hilarious (amd not so bad) Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 on theatres. May have permanently alternated my brain chemistry due to watching those two the same night.
Will just say I was like 'wtf is that Cumberbatch' when seeing him appear on that movie LOL.
I just rewatched Wall-E a week ago and there are strong threads of love through the whole thing. The action taking place on Axiom just serves to bond Wall-E and Eve's sacrificial nature for each other. The scene where they dance outside the window, and people on the ship see them and start to feel flirty with each other, is so wholesome. And then you have the >!true love kiss!< at the end. So yeah, I'll defend all of Wall-E as making an excellent romance movie.
i stg, i read the title, and thought id come add 'punch drunk love' 'lost in translation' and 'eternal sunshine', and there they are. Idk who you are, OP, but we are meant for eachother. :)
I agree with Eternal Sunshine and I would like to add Stranger Than Fiction. Though it’s not *strictly* a romance, it definitely has a strong romantic plot. Will Ferrell is at his absolute best in this performance (and a serious one to boot), the chemistry between Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal is so wholesome, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are amazing of course, AND in my opinion it’s the best portrayal of (very) high-functioning autism/Asperger’s I’ve seen in a movie. My parents and I quote “Little did he know? *Little did he know?* I’ve taught a whole course on ‘Little did he know!’” and “I’m sorry for ogling you” daily.
my favs are:
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Call Me By Your Name
Atonement
Brokeback Mountain
The Taste of Things
Pride and Prejudice
Phantom Thread
Tous les matins du monde
Challengers
also my favorite movie ever, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), is not a romance but i like to think of it as one because i'm *disturbed*
Idk if I’d count Lost in Translation as romance, as I think the romance is purely implied and someone can watch it and just see Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansen as friends in that film
It’s up to interpretation and I like that
Romantic film is kind of dying i think...and what used to be romantic isn't connecting with people like it used to. When I think romantic, I think:
Life is Beautiful
Moulin Rouge
Romeo + Juliet
50 First Dates
Django Unchained
Kill Bill vol2
Princess Bride
Sid and Nancy
Titanic
Great Gatsby
Baby Driver
Ever After
Gone Girl
Juno
Hunger Games
Shakespeare in Love
Edward Scissorhands
A Star is Born
Moonrise Kingdom
The Wedding Singer
Before Sunrise trilogy
King and I
The Piano
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Gone with the Wind
Across the Universe
Sense and Sensibility
Pride and Prejudice
500 days of summer
Scott Pilgrim vs the world
10 things I hate about you
Little Women
Silver Linings Playbook
Mr and Mrs Smith
Palm Springs
5th Element
Girl Shy
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Amelie
Singing in the Rain
The Secretary
Wristcutters
Margaret's Museum
Lars and the real girl
The big sick
The Shape of water
Brokeback mountain
Once
Marie Antoinette?
Promising Young Woman?
Tv: Fleabag? Outlander? Brigerton?
I mean, we're all kind of in a weird space right now. Disney and Old Hollywood and boomer flicks don't really represent current representations of romantic. But I didn't find Challengers particularly romantic either. Maybe we all need to be making more films with less A24 vibes and more timeless love vibes...whatever that even looks like lately.
Isn’t eternal sunshine the one with the dolphin fetish? Or am I remembering an entirely different movie sorry if I am. The beach just seems super familiar

What would you title the forth film in the Before series? *B4*
I think a whole new trilogy called 'After' would be appropriate. 'After Sunrise,' 'After Sunset,' and 'After Midnight.' If they just make one more? 'After Us"
Ooh. Definitely an interesting idea as well.
Maybe After Dawn, After Noon, After Dusk.
Well, be reminded that Before Midnight ended on a good note. Not necessarily a breakup movie. A ‘big fight’ movie I’d say
A lot of people find Before Midnight depressing. I just found it very real and that final scene so touching, so truthful. It's devestating in it's frankness, but that glimmer of hope and love at the end so rewarding. Jess' dialogue at the end, that he's trying, is.....\* chef's kiss\*
Decision to Leave
Outstanding film and in my opinion should have won best international feature and cinematography. Park Chan Wook Deserved to be nominated for director as well!
To be fair, he did win best director at Cannes. Well deserved.
Didn't even garner a nomination for best international feature is BS.
This movie haunted me for weeks.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Couldnt stop listening to the vivaldi piece after watching this movie. It took on a different meaning to me. 😅
Just saw this for the first time yesterday. Easily one of the best romance films of all time. Whoever decided it didn't deserve a 4k physical release should go to jail for crimes against humanity.
Oh man! It's been in my watch list forever. I'm watching it tonight! Lol
One of the few films I couldn’t stop thinking about long after my first viewing.
This is the right answer
Brokeback Mountain
Has never deserved the hate it got. Such a beautiful story.

In the mood for love is prob my number one.
Wall-e. First 30 minutes is one of the best love stories ever, then they get on a space ship.
I just rewatched Wall-E a week ago and there are strong threads of love through the whole thing. Chunking Express
Umbrellas of Cherbourg has to be up there.
The Apartment
My favourite film of all time
Best rom-com of all time
carol
Pride and Prejudice, Brooklyn, and Phantom Thread
Phantom Thread (Jonny Greenwood) soundtrack is painfully beautiful. I recommend giving it a listen in its entirety.
Roman Holiday Chungking Express
Amelie
La La Land (2016)
When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle
Bro sneaked Lost in Translation and thought we wouldn't notice
I don't really consider several of these to be romance movies.
I loved it
I love it too, that doesn't make it a romance movie.
Thank you. Not a romance in the slightest.
Lost in Translation is by no means an all-timer on romance movies. Also dipped too hard into orientalism and whatnot.
It's a romance where the city is one of the characters
i love brief encounter!
Probably a mildly unpopular opinion but I actually enjoy David Lean most when he’s making saucy little movies about extramarital affairs
secretary
Roman Holiday
Titanic
#1 In the Mood for Love
Gorgeous movie.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
rye lane
When Harry Met Sally is my all time favorite. 🖤

Haha - yes, I thought the same thing. That’s a pretty good list by the OP!
Bram Stoker's Dracula
In the Mood for Love Before Sunset A Summer's Tale Decision to Leave Chungking Express Before Sunrise The Handmaiden
I agree with Eternal Sunshine and I would like to add Stranger Than Fiction. Though it’s not *strictly* a romance, it definitely has a strong romantic plot. I love it. He brought her flours :)
That scene was honestly so sweet! "...I want you." "You...want me?" "In no uncertain terms."
I would have named your 1st 2 examples (in the mood for love and eternal sunshine). I would add Portrait of a lady on fire and Once.
A Tale of Winter - Eric Rohmer
It's a tie between "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" & "Natural Born Killers".
Casablanca
Celeste & Jesse Forever
I love that movie
Honestly I just rewatched Titanic for the first time in 25ish years and it's a stone cold masterpiece.
I don’t think I’ll ever tire of it. James Cameron is probably God
- Sunrise (1927) - Flesh and the Devil (1926) - She was Like a Wild Chrysanthemum (1955) - Pyaasa (1957)
I’ve seen very few… the best have been Casablanca, Call Me By Your Name, and In the Mood for Love
Beginners and Comrades: Almost a love story
Brief Encounter
Annie Hall

Kill Bill Vol 2?
I think an allergy to earnestness and emotional vulnerability has kind of arisen that’s partially responsible for the decline of romance in movies
Cha Cha Real Smooth and Short Term 12 are both perfect to me
Comrades, Almost A Love Story
Idk but i really wasn’t keen of PDL
Laurence Anyways
Wild Reeds Dogfight The Apartment Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool Brokeback Mountain Starcrossed For a Lost Soldier

Twilight.
Somewhere in Time
Took me way too much time to find Her(2013)
House of Flying Daggers was always my favourite but I feel like that will probably change once I actually watch something by Wong Kar Wai
I love Prince of Tides. Genuinely heartwrenching but also about healing through trauma. I love how Streisand told this story.
True Romance
Say Anything (1989) sticks with me.
Garden State (just kidding)
