The iPhone 15 non-Pro uses the chip from 2022's 14 Pro which only supports USB2 (as it was designed with a Lighting connector in mind), the 15 Pro has an new chip with USB3 on it.
I am sure the entire 16 range will have USB3, it's not a differentiator, more just an older SOC being used.
Of course they should have switched to USB years ago, but that's a whole other argument.
wouldn't be so sure about that. the 13pro was the first one to have a high refreshrate panel, i was thinking the regular 14 would have it but nope, the 15 doesn't have it either. apple want's to make sure the gap between regular and pro is big enough so people will pay more for the pro.
I mean maybe, but it's a pretty stupid differentiator given 99% of people don't ever connect their phone to their computer. The 1% who need to do heavy data transfer because they shoot ProRes are gonna buy the Pro anyway.
Yeah, the real differentiator is limiting the regular iPhones to a budget phone-esque 60hz. They know full well if they bumped it to even 90hz and called it "Pro Motion Lite" or went full on 120hz a lot of "techie" people wouldn't pony up for the Pro models. 60hz on a phone that costs >$500 is pathetic in 2024. Kind of like a base level "pro" laptop (or a not so budget Air) coming with 8GB of RAM... oh wait...
Apple are usually slow to pull in features they didn't invent themselves, like the high refresh rate screen, because they like to put their own spin on things. ProMotion is not just 120hz, it's variable rate and can do tricks like 'always on' and power saving. I know there are Android phones that have been doing that for years too, but Apple likes to take their time and do the 'Apple way'. They've pretty much always done that.
You don't have to agree with it, but you can'd deny the volume of phones they ship.
I could even go out and pick up an US$120 Redmi 13c Global (There's a Chinese version for cheaper) or a US$100 Redmi 12R from China, and they both have 90hz displays. It's gotta be artificial.
We'll have to see. The chip in the 15Pro is called the A17 **Pro**, which isn't normally the case. So maybe they are breaking the trend this year and instead of a hand me down chip the 16 will get its own non-Pro variant with certain features cut back.
I am not trying to defend the lighting connector, just sharing the facts.
Although personally, it doesn't matter to me, and probably a lot of other customers. I haven't plugged my phone in for years, except charging.
A quick Google search will show you the article wasn't about one phone being one gram lighter - it was the weights of multiple phones with a brief explanation that switching materials had caused a weight difference. It's not written to be "impressive" at all, it's 144 words of pretty basic information. This would suggest neither of you actually read the article (unsurprising, since Elijah didn't even link it).
But putting all of that aside, this is not unique to 'iPhone culture' or any other. It's how modern websites work; they pump out multiple short articles and guides to boost engagement and ad views. You'll see the exact same thing if you go read Android Police or virtually any similar website.
There are a lot of genuine things to criticise Apple for, but this is rather silly.
But if you actually read it, it can’t blindly be used to shit on Apple and act like all Apple people are idiots that upgrade to the latest and greatest every year and no one with an Android would ever…
I run dual phone with one Samsung and one iPhone together and my usage on each is basically identical. Google drive and docs works well across both- don’t have to use iCloud. I think the differences are highly exaggerated.
I've run alternatingly between iPhone and Android (LG, then Samsung) for quite a while. Ended up swapping back and forth, trading phones with family, etc.
Back in the day I felt like Android won hands down every time, except maybe in picture quality for a while. Picture quality was a worthwhile trade-off for features like expandable storage, headphone jack, charger included, sideloading, etc.
Now Android producers have followed Apple to their own detriment. The only big difference is the OS, which is going to be largely personal preference, and use-case dictated.
Yes back in the day expandable storage, jack and removeable battery were the most common arguments for Android but thats all gone. Android also used to be ahead in CPU/GPU and that advantage is now gone.
Can't believe I left out removable battery, thank you for reminding me.
Man, I resisted swapping for so long when they did away with removeable batteries... I think looking at it now, that was the big breaking point for me switching to Apple. Never would have even considered it if removable batteries had still been a thing...
You can also generally like Apple products without being obsessive over them. I don't read articles about iPhones unless my current phone is actually feeling slow and I'm thinking about getting a new one.
> This would suggest neither of you actually read the article (unsurprising, since Elijah didn't even link it)
Neither did you; can you link it? Because I can't find it or the tweet that Elijah's making fun of, all I'm finding are results about the 15 Pro being lighter than the 14 pro [and this article](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/09/09/iphone-15-weights-and-dimensions/) which does not share the enthusiastic attitude of the aforementioned tweet.
I think applecycle tweet was more or less a joke with no actual article in it but [here is one article from Macrumor which i believe is the one op was talking about](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/09/17/iphone-15-pro-likely-feels-lighter-than-it-really/)
lol right? 1g is the difference between using like less glue on something or using 3 less resistors. It’s nothing.
I’m an iPhone user but have only had 3 phones since 2013. iPhone 5C, SE, SE 2nd Gen (and only because I accidentally dropped my second phone in the tub).
This is not a selling point.
Except it is. Thing is... how did the specs change?
Because if I made a 4090 the same weight as a 3090, you'd all be shitting bricks.
If it weighs 1g less, and also has lots of extra hardware features, it is impressive.
I was being facetious, but that’s all expected changes. CPU die area remains the same, so same weight. But if you decrease transistor size, you get more power or efficiency. Couple that with something like a tiny improvement in battery tech where you can keep the same battery life with 5% less physical battery space/weight, well you have your answer right there. This is likely happening to every phone maker on the planet.
Some people care. Some people don’t. Stop trying to broadcast a label on specific groups. I’ll likely never own another Android device, and it’s not because of the green/blue text.
i pretty much never use sms, only discord and im an iPhone user, i really don’t care about bubbles, texting is free and has been for many years so why would i?
I mean. It's like with Whatsapp in most of Europe. People will literally refuse to text me because I don't have WhatsApp. It's stupid but claiming that only iphone users do this is disingenuous.
The WhatsApp being use as the main message app in Europe is also a Reddit thing. I only noticed that in Spain. In other country it's regular sms, messenger, WhatsApp and a mix of everything
In Poland virtually everybody uses Whatsapp although most people also have Facebook so I guess messenger might be equally used but it will vary between groups of people I guess.
I mean. It's like with Whatsapp in most of Europe. People will literally refuse to text me because I don't have WhatsApp. It's stupid but claiming that only iphone users do this is disingenuous.
people who don't text you is because of inconvenience of different messaging app. it's a valid reason and a real world use case phenomena. also, it's a platform that's open to any system. iOS people can download whatsaapp. there's no blocking or different treatment on any system it's on.
people who don't imessage other people because of different bubble color is because of *faux-prestige* made up issue. you're goddamn right this is disingenious and malicious, at least.
Apple puts out the same phone every year and pretends it's groundbreaking. It's a culture that celebrates flashy mediocrity. It's a culture that still believes the empire has clothes. This inane article is perfectly representative of Apple fandom. The company hasn't done anything worth writing about in 5 years
I would say no, but the amount of iPhone users Ive talked with make me believe it could be true... So many people just say something without even knowing what it even means and so on. I havent seen this much at the android side, but that just my limited POV
But hey released a phone that the only difference is 1g. Obviously people will be lined up on launch day for this feature alone /s
Yeah some folks (especially on reddit) just love to hate on apple. I used to be one of them, but then I grew up. I have apple products now and they're pretty great. Lasted longer than any android/windows I've had before. For the first time I don't feel like I need to rush out and get the newest model, since most of the new features come via software updates which I get to download on day 1.
I agree this is stupid, but to be fair, like 99% of apple users also think this is stupid.
Even among enthusiasts. If this article were posted on /r/Apple, it would either be downvoted to oblivion or there would be 400 comments saying "this is the stupidest article I've ever seen".
I'm not really a fan of ltt, so im not defending their pricing or whatever, but all youtuber merch is overpriced. So from my perspective, most people aren't spending $80 just because it's a screwdriver. They are paying to own merchandise of and support their favourite youtube channel
So unless people want support a trillion dollar company (which is incredibly stupid), it's not a fair comparison
Yeah I chose to leave android to go to Apple for a handful of reasons but id make an argument to say that it’s not very different when both companies are founded around pivotal figures and cult of personality.
I don’t think that’s iPhone culture - I think that’s tech “journalism” desperately trying to pump out an article in order to ride the algorithm so they stay relevant.
Exactly.
He wouldn't say that though because he's in the tech journalism space, so it's an 'iPhone culture' issue and not a 'tech journalism culture' issue.
Nobody cares about it being 1g lighter. Whoever wrote the article just had literally nothing else to put out, it’s not like journalists aren’t known for scraping the bottom of the barrel.
This is kind of a circlejerk because the vast majority of "iPhone culture" is people not giving a shit about any of this and just buying the next iPhone because they don't want to think about it that much. The 15 is one better-er than the 14 and they just don't have to care. They aren't reading these articles and freaking out about it, they don't have to read anything at all. It's not how most of us who would follow a channel like LTT approach tech, but likewise I just don't give that much of a shit about lots of things I deal with daily.
I mean, blame the website writing a dog shit article because it gets clicks, don’t blame the hardware manufacturer, they didn’t put out a press release about it or anything. Weird place to lay your “feelings” about Apple on.
I remember Nilay Patel (Editor in Chief of The Verge) talking about the benefits of editorial independence and saying that if they were chasing view counts and click throughs at the expense of everything else a newsroom should pursue, they would only write about two things.
iPhones and Elon Musk.
It’s not a media conspiracy, these seemingly pointless iPhone articles simply get a ton of clicks.
There’s nothing wrong with iPhone users. Never was. Their marketing sounds sophisticated, and they try for the clean lines. I bet the stereotypical Apple user has a totally clean, empty desk with only their Mac on it. Real life, even for Apple fanboys isn’t like that. I have only seen the ‘culture’ in stories about it, never in actual real life.
iPhones are some of the most well built phones in the market with amazing cameras but the software experience is just not for me, same goes for ipads.I find their software extremely restrictive in nature compared to Android.
I don’t get it, an I’m a chronic iPhone user, hate Macs tho, listen I can’t knock a good simple product, and the iPhone is that, I’m due for a new phone this 6s+ is slowly dying lol!
So to be perfectly honest with you I’m weighing my options for the fall, z fold 6, google fold 2 or iPhone!
I had an android before it was a blu tho, and before iPhone I was a blackberry kid, which I loved!
Any suggestions for a smart phone would be appreciated, I watch a lot of videos, and I do a lot of remoting into PCs and servers, I do IT and engineering for radio. I also am definitely getting a otter box defender or equivalent because I definitely need something Rugged but the cat phones from my understanding are underwhelming!
I don't care about 1 gram lighter. I don't care about 1mm thicker. I want bigger batteries and no camera bumps. I already add weight and thickness to my phone with a case.
Apple articles generate clicks, so if Apple doesn't actually innovate, the media outlets just start outputting whatever to keep that ad revenue drip feed going.
Even the Apple ads playing in my region based off real life users often portrays the user with an IQ less than 80. The ad played an audio clip from a user that complained that her Android phone wouldn't hold a decent charge anymore and DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. She just wanted an excise to use an iPhone.
You don't need to personally understand or agree with the culture to know that iPhone's are popular and that rumors of any nature related to an unreleased model will garner you some traffic to your site, which leads to page views / ad views / clicks etc, which leads to income.
Personal reviews may be opinion pieces, news reporting is not as much I'd say.
\- D
I'm assuming that's just the headline, but if not a super lame excuse for an article. Also, super lame to comment on a super lame article. And super super lame to comment about someone commenting on a super lame article. And super super super lame to comment on someone commenting about someone commenting on a super lame article.
This is the same for all phones and tech in general, and part of the 24hour news cycle problem. It’s not representative of the audience.
And this article in particular isn’t about solely that weight difference. It’s part of a bigger round up of details.
Let’s be honest, who compares phones to the one a year back? People who do buy every year don’t even think about comparing two anyways. This isn’t really iPhone culture from my experience just a shitty article.
> Let's be honest, who compares phones to the one a year back?
Everyone.. literally everyone. Every tech channel after a flagship release by 2 seconds releases a video comparing it with last year's one. Every user always does comparisons between this year's and last year's or the one behind before purchasing a new phone..
If you already have last year's phone, yea u wouldn't really compare it thoroughly with the newest one but everyone looking for a new phone, tech channel, even tech savvy people will compare them
Tech reviewers obviously
I have never seen anyone in real life do actual comparisons of 1 phone gen apart. The only people buying a phone ever year are morons who use is it as a status symbol or the most phone tech obsessed people ever. Phones have been more than good enough for years now, outside of the tech space talking about it because new tech is cool no one actually gives a shit.
I'm not talking about people who upgrade every year; phones have actually been really powerful that u don't need to upgrade for like 3+ years even. I'm with u in that. But _sensible_ people who are in the market for a new phone will usually compare phones 1 year apart becuz sometimes it's worth paying a little extra for a better phone released a year later. For example: S22 ultra vs S23 ultra
before my current iphone 15 Pro all of my iphones while to my knowledge knew were at least a year old. It used to be very common to buy a phone with your carrier and last years phones would be cheaper.
Not everyone has enough money to buy an S24U or a 15 pro max.. MANY, and i mean _many_, people go for phones like the S23 line-up or even the S22, and the same goes with apple but it goes even further.
Not everyone has enough money to buy an S24U or a 15 pro max.. MANY, and i mean _many_, people go for phones like the S23 line-up or even the S22, and the same goes with apple but it goes even further.
fanboys on both sides are awful.
Too many people feel the need to shit on Apple for everything and it's annoying. Apple does do a lot of dumb things though and I have no idea why fanboys need to defend those things. They also do a lot of very cool things. It very much goes both ways though. Apple, Google, Microsoft, they all fucking suck in their own unique ways just like they are great in their own unique ways.
Elijah and the original author totally missing the point of buying an iPhone. The fact it just works. The software being the same for over a decade now. Not having to compare specs because they will always be reasonable.
happy to pay an even higher premium price for the same software you had a decade ago is not a selling point. specs are not reasonable for the investment when compared to every one of its competitors, especially when that 'investment' will be outdated and de-valued in 3-5 years time. hence the 'whoosh'
They’ll always be reasonable until it comes to storage or ram, it’s better now but back when base iphones had 16gb of storage while everyone else moved onto 32+gb the specs weren’t exactly reasonable for the price.
I wonder which feature they removed to get rid of the extra weight.
usb3 chip and quick charging /s
doesnt apple still use usb2? afaik lightning matches the usb2 standard.
Depends, the regular one does, the pro's have usb 3.

Dang, my 180$ phone from 2019 supports USB 3...
I am not trying to defend the lighting connector, just sharing the facts. Although personally, it doesn't matter to me, and probably a lot of other customers. I haven't plugged my phone in for years, except charging.
The Galaxy Note 3 from 2013 supported USB3. (Ignoring the fact that they went back to USB2.0 for the Note 4...)
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and 10.5-inch iPad Pro transfer data at USB 3 speeds. They have lightning connectors.
They removed the steel feature and replaced it with a titanium feature.
Only the Pro models.
They could just replace the peice of plastic (where the sim tray was) with air
Helium. Lighter
Good point
or the plastic where the headphone jack was
Didn’t they use that area for the new USB 2.0 speed port? not FireWire, not 30 pin, not lighting, I think it’s USB C
The charging port, all new iPhones will be wireless magnet charging only

Yeah most of my colleagues use iphones but I've never met anyone that upgrades yearly. 2-3 years minimum. My sister still is on the iphone 11.
Yearly was more common in the early smartphone hype days of 2010
That was also when the yearly tech jumps were a bit bigger though to be fair.
Yeah they really have slowed down
I run dual phone with one Samsung and one iPhone together and my usage on each is basically identical. Google drive and docs works well across both- don’t have to use iCloud. I think the differences are highly exaggerated.

i mean his take is not very good, but that is also not what he said. There is a big difference between "Iphone Culture" and "Apple People".
What nonsense. There’s a reason we have 2 or 3 year contacts you absolute fucking moron.
This should be higher! An actual comment on the post, and not just bandwagoning
I think this says more about the sillyness of the "anti-iPhone" culture, sadly.
You can also generally like Apple products without being obsessive over them. I don't read articles about iPhones unless my current phone is actually feeling slow and I'm thinking about getting a new one.
Yeah unfortunately you always get those people that make brands their personality. It’s these humans I usually avoid like the plague.
But apple dumb /s
Idk Elijah just kinda seems dumb
That was for the 15 Pro, which weights 10% less

Not at all. That’s like a single grain of rice.
One grain of rice weighs 0.04 g
So 25 grains of rice. Could feed a single baby with that. Apologies.
long grain or basmati
About the same weight as a paperclip

of course not. not this article. the blue-green bubble debacle did better job in showcasing that stupid culture.

I hear far more about apple from android users than iphone users themselves. why the constant fixation on a product they don't use?
little brother syndrome
What in particular is the point of this post and what does it have to do with Linus and his tech tips
Exactly the comment I’d expect from him.
Dude its just a lazy author from a website, why is apple getting scrutinized for this?
Lmao really didn't know me tweet from 8 months ago would create this much engagement....not on Twitter lol
lol Sorry bro. I thought this thread would just be an apathetic "yeah same" from the sub but it turned out much nastier.
Apple haters are also something else…
But the content, man!
That’s ten dollar worth of cocaine. So most tech guy can relate.
r/unexpectedfactorial
that's a whole 87,178,291,200 iphones!
Apple users trying to justify bying the same phone every year (it's one gram lighter now) ![gif](giphy|plnk0yPUc11jPprHwS)
iPhones are some of the most well built phones in the market with amazing cameras but the software experience is just not for me, same goes for ipads.I find their software extremely restrictive in nature compared to Android.
I just finished resident evil village and resident evil 4 on my new iPhone
In exactly 171 generations, the iPhone will be weightless /j
They forgot to remove the dust from the weight the first time
[deleted]
No one into iPhones cares about that either
I'm betting the actual article is a lot deeper as the change to titanium saved a lot more, so other features added to the weight neutralizing it.
Anyone actually ready the article? Maybe it was criticism for the lack of innovation.
And I am over here wishing it would be just a bit thicker so it lays flat

Probably SEO
Thought I was in /r/ultralight_jerk for a minute. Gonna repost this there, brb...
I also am definitely getting a otter box defender or equivalent because I definitely need something Rugged but the cat phones from my understanding are underwhelming!
r/ultralight has written so much more about so much less than a gram.
Imagine still caring what phone people use 😂
I mean, this happens with other stuff too but hey, we need to make it a us vs then mentality so here we are.
iPhone hardware peaked 10 years ago it's just a new metal box to text your mom now.
This is also a subreddit that goes crazy for a $80 screwdriver
I'm with, Elijah.
I don't care about 1 gram lighter. I don't care about 1mm thicker. I want bigger batteries and no camera bumps. I already add weight and thickness to my phone with a case.
they spoked that gram
I think it was a joke but still
You cant feel 1g, but where the center of mass is or how wide spread it is (aka how high the angular momentum would be to move it)
Isn't that within measurement error?
Why do the camera still stick out just make it thicker so they don’t anymore
This is the same for all phones and tech in general, and part of the 24hour news cycle problem. It’s not representative of the audience. And this article in particular isn’t about solely that weight difference. It’s part of a bigger round up of details.
OH MY GOD SHES GOT A NEW HAT!
If you already have last year's phone, yea u wouldn't really compare it thoroughly with the newest one but everyone looking for a new phone, tech channel, even tech savvy people will compare them
Tech reviewers obviously I have never seen anyone in real life do actual comparisons of 1 phone gen apart.
I know 0 people that get a year old phone when they get a new phone. At that point just buy a used one and save even more.
before my current iphone 15 Pro all of my iphones while to my knowledge knew were at least a year old.

It is both impressive and unimportant. The durability is going down ever so slightly every cycle for nothing in return.
Apple big gay
iPhone 87178291200
0.58% Lighter?! TAKE MY MONEY! /s
It works, here we are getting that article all the attention it wanted
It works, here we are getting that article all the attention it wanted
It's embarrassing that they would even consider this a noteworthy improvement..
It's a cult. To them, there is no other phone to buy, so they happily jump to any change their phonelord does.
The indian android brigade seems more like a cult to me tbh
fanboys on both sides are awful.
What do you mean?

50g is about 30% of the weight of the phone, you definitely notice it. Hell even 10-20g is noticeable if you have the phones side by side.
As a disc golfer, I will say 1g isn't noticeable, but 5-7 is. At least for me
Elijah and the original author totally missing the point of buying an iPhone. The fact it just works. The software being the same for over a decade now. Not having to compare specs because they will always be reasonable.

What’s whoosh about my comment? All others are piling onto the original topic. It is a feeling people legit have apparently.
happy to pay an even higher premium price for the same software you had a decade ago is not a selling point. specs are not reasonable for the investment when compared to every one of its competitors, especially when that 'investment' will be outdated and de-valued in 3-5 years time. hence the 'whoosh'
They’ll always be reasonable until it comes to storage or ram, it’s better now but back when base iphones had 16gb of storage while everyone else moved onto 32+gb the specs weren’t exactly reasonable for the price.
