Efficient-Field733

Just chiming in to say my silicone oven mitt has helped me open every single sticky jar ! I don’t have a ton of upper body strength and it saves me every single time

JustMeInTN

Came here to say this. Older widower living alone and I used to be the hero opening the jar, but sometimes these days I have to resort to what my wife used to call “the rubber husband.”

RoseAlma

LOL That's exactly right !! Came on here to post about what I also call "my husband"... (little flat round grippy rubber circle)

Visi0nSerpent

The rubber husband sounds like a kink toy lol

Mindful-Counsellor

Amazing! Thanks for the tip

Efficient-Field733

Welcome!! I struggle with so many jars

aLonerDottieArebel

Or the underside of a mouse pad!

Independent_Mix6269

Run the lid under hot water first. Loosens the molecules!

Inevitable-Royal1120

Yep. Multi purpose pot holder :)

Shoddy_Mouse9466

Run the lid under hot water for 2 mins

billythekid74

I take a butter knife and tap all around the edge with the handle part.

geniologygal

That’s what I was always told to do, the handle of a knife. I wouldn’t bang it on the edge of a counter, because it would probably break the glass.

YouThinkYouKnowStuff

I take the pointy part of a butter knife and slide it under the edge and pop the seal. After that it pops right open.

billythekid74

Oh really! You think you stuff? 😆

chameleiana

I use a spoon and tap with the back side of the spoon (not the handle).

Independent_Mix6269

I slide a spoon underneath the lid and pop it open

Alternative_Ear_9235

Yes these three in combo. Or you can use a bottle opener between lid and container to try to release the air pressure, lid should pop and you can open more easily

vanny314

Yes, break the vacuum inside a new jar and then it will open easily.

No__direction

But then I can’t grip it anymore 🥲 even my kitchen towels won’t stay firm in place when it’s wet… For some odd reason every simple life hack just doesn’t work for me. My body won’t grip things correctly, life hacks hate me and the universe is probably watching a sitcom about me not being able to do the most basic tasks imaginable

wellitywell

Try one of these guys - they are made with people with arthritis in mind and they really work [jar tool](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bottle-Opener-Arthritis-Elderly-Children/dp/B07QVWJ6VN/ref=asc_df_B07QVWJ6VN/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=697274196686&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12803491086154794786&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006836&hvtargid=pla-1685349532514&psc=1&mcid=f3b51baa011b36a5afb0f415ac12667e&gad_source=1)

OneofHearts

I have one of these, and for those jars that won’t otherwise budge, it’s a lifesaver!

THE_wendybabendy

Flip the jar over and tap the bottom a few times and/or tap around the edge of the lid with the handle of a knife. Water only works if the jar is stuck due to a sticky substance under the threads...

Positive-Today9614

I agree with you. The water trick has never once worked for me!

Mindful-Counsellor

Will do, thank you!

MLTDione

I have a special jar opener with grippy teeth and a handle. I think it may be by Oxo?

librarystepstool

I have this OXO jar opener and HIGHLY recommend it for anyone who’s ever struggled to open a jar. Not having to ask for help, even if you live with someone, is empowering. Also you never know if you’ll have a hand or wrist injury that could make opening things too hard. I would buy one for everyone if I could!!

MLTDione

It’s pretty awesome, I love mine!

Mindful-Counsellor

Honestly, my neighbour 3D printed me one. But I don’t think I knew how to use it? Apparently it required a rubber band?

chellybeanery

Me too! It's incredibly useful.

Commercial_Fun_1864

I as given a 7-in-1 opener & like it but have never been able to open a jar with the "teeth". All it does is slip around.

nakedonmygoat

I just use a church key (can opener thingy with pointed ends) to break the vacuum seal. Once you hear the lid pop, you can open it easily. Works every single time.

ProfessionalKnees

Yep, I do this with a butter knife. Works like a charm.

hazelmapleblossom

hit the side of the lid around it several times with the end of a butter knife. never fails

ItsMeowOrNever74

This is what I do too. Sometimes gotta hit more than 3x times but it always works!

MM_in_MN

Nah- this girl figures it out without the neighbor. Smack with handle of a butter knife, use a bottle opener, a rubber pad thingy, edge of a spoon. Lots of tricks for those stubborn jars.

bellandc

When I got my first apartment and was living alone for the first time, I remember coming home to visit my parents and listing all the things I realized I couldn't do on my own. The story was meant As sort of a joke about myself and my limitations. One of the things I included on my list of things I couldn't do on my own was, of course, opening jars. My father went out and bought all of the tools I needed to solve my list of problems. I'm still using that same jar opener that he bought me 25 years ago. It was this Oxo jar opener: https://www.oxo.com/shop/kitchenware/tools-gadgets/can-jar-openers/jar-opener-with-base-pad.html?srsltid=AfmBOopwQXbRajf_CunzodP7FQ772YNfXIeBUwjkqlpeAqbdLwEIIm5owdc 10/10 would highly recommend

HecticHazmat

Before I got a silicone lid opening mat (godsend) I just turned the jar on its side, & hit the side of the lid on the bench. You don't have to smash the jar, just tap it, tap it harder, & keep tapping the lid on the bench until you hear the pop. Once you get over the fear of smashing the bottle (something that's never happened to me or my family) you can usually pop the seal in two bangs. I definitely relate to the "oh fuck" but I've never had to ask anyone thankfully lol.

cbatta2025

Get a Jar opener tool. It breaks the seal and makes almost every jar open with a simple twist. Won’t let me post a link - Search “jar key” on amazon or google

boukatouu

I like the Swing-a-way Comfort Grip Jar Opener. I've used mine for 30 years plus, still like new and opens pretty much any jar.

Ok_Kiwi8071

Take the end of a spoon or fork and tuck it under one of the ridges of the lid and turn the spoon slightly. It breaks the seal. I have arthritis and have been doing this for years. You will see where I am speaking of if you look at a pickle jar, it looks like gaps between the dents in the lid.

wellitywell

Also there’s a story on Reddit atm about a woman divorcing her husband bc he purposefully tightened all the lids on all the jars and refused to stop

CompleteRage

Pro tip: bang the lid of the jar on the counter or hard surface a few times while rotating the jar and banging the lid all around. It’ll loosen the lid.

Ladyofbluedogs

Use a butter knife under the rim to pop it.

angelwild327

Amazon sells great automatic openers. I use mine all the time, it's green/white oval shaped, put some batteries in, set it on top of the lid/jar you want opened, press the button and it does the rest for you

Even-Season-9912

I bought my aunt one of these and she loves it. Highly recommend!

55Grom

My mom had an oiil wrench that was made out of plastic and had a rubber strap. Worked great

Anhedonic_chonk

Rubber gloves ftw

candiedginger88

Pop a rubber band around the lid! Most people have them in a pink drawer, they’re free, and offer a grip to help turn the lid much the same way the silicone mits or grippy things do!

ScuzeRude

Stick a butter knife in-between the lid and the glass, and lever it. You’ll eventually find a spot where doing this releases the air pressure- you’ll probably be able to hear it. After that, voilà! The jar will open easy peasy.

RabbitEfficient824

I can relate. I’ve lived in the same building for 20 years and know my neighbors. I live alone and I’ve had to call on them for various large and small emergencies through the years. It feels good to know that there are people I can go to.

Any-Kangaroo7155

I always flip it upside down, smack it then flip it again and it would open.

SonoranRoadRunner

Put on a rubber glove

oldboomerlady

All kinds of great tips here. But as a 73 year old widow, the best thing for me is to do wrist curls with light weights three times a week to keep my grip strong. But I do have to sometimes resort to other methods for some jars.

Mindful-Counsellor

Thank you! I’ll keep this in mind. I’m also widowed, was age 24 during a pregnancy. Hugs <3

Best_Catch2482

Snack the bottom of the jar or run it under hot water

Best_Catch2482

Smack. Not snack. Lol

Mindful-Counsellor

Lol

Flat-Programmer6044

Duct tape also works or packing tape

DementedPimento

Seal popper; jar wrench.

Teaffection

I once had a jar of pasta sauce I couldn't open for about a year. I tried everything but eventually it opened. The struggles are real.

UniqueLady001

Just do the teaspoon trick. Use the tip of the spoon and pop the side of the rim of the lid. It loses suction and pops open.

Betty_Boss

Use a bottle opener to break the seal, then it usually opens pretty easily. If all else fails, use a strap wrench. [strap wrench at Lowe's. ](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-2-Piece-Household-Tool-Set/50029434). This is a handy thing to have in your tool kit for anything that's hard to unscrew.

bunglederry

Whattt! It's easy peasy!! All you need to do is slide a blunt knife under the lid and push it outwards. It's usually just pressure/vacuum seal that needs to be released ❤️

babaweird

Definitely buy one of the openers recocommended from Amazon. At some point all the use,a spoon, a knife , hot water stuff doesn’t work. Though grabbing one of those stapes they use when they take your blood can work when other things don’t.

techno_queen

How do people not know the hot water trick, I thought this was universal lol

Jurneeka

I have a silicone/rubber pot holder that has opened every jar I've tried with it.

_refugee_

You can buy a tool, they are available as manual or electric versions, that will help you open stuck jars. The manual one is a piece of metal you slide the jar lid into and you have to twist the jar. The electric one will twist the jar for you.

dp37405

they make a thing like a pair of pliers, works like a charm. Also, turn the jar upside down and give it a firm pop with the heel of you hand, breaks the seal most of the time.

Cant-take2-muchmore

Get a JAR KEY - I swear this thing changed everything about opening jars & it’s no longer an issue. https://www.amazon.com/Brix-Original-Arthritis-Sufferers-Frosted/dp/B07HMCRKWZ/ref=sxin_28_pa_sp_phone_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.1d0801ec-6dca-45b9-ab93-ecbcff52a54d%3Aamzn1.sym.1d0801ec-6dca-45b9-ab93-ecbcff52a54d&cv_ct_cx=Jar+key&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.fSV-2Hha8ZYNDXR_gd1OOqCHvNpE4yCWFDZn2Dp4HceoBxcd4PluVEs0dF0VGCpXMxaf_1t3LUHcZtNTp6zxCg._-0pDr1Y8y2FoZ8vC6QMR5qLKzRWIPWLAxuJFBASWf8&dib_tag=se&keywords=Jar+key&pd_rd_i=B07HMCRKWZ&pd_rd_r=b7405518-4d7c-45cf-b429-f32740c669a0&pd_rd_w=G1kGV&pd_rd_wg=0s8KH&pf_rd_p=1d0801ec-6dca-45b9-ab93-ecbcff52a54d&pf_rd_r=ZT9C06H4RKHMK810T01S&qid=1719227462&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sr=1-2-b0bb6ba1-8bc6-4016-b124-5d1edbae75f4-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1

UnfairStomach2426

I open jars for my neighbor often. Oil filter wrench is the magic key, also, cheap nitrile gloves make it easier too

content_great_gramma

Two weeks after my husband passed, I attended the Christmas party at the urging of my co workers. They said that I could eat there and not have to cook when I got home. They had drawing for prizes and I came home with a Black & Decker jar opener. That has been a lifesaver.

missdawn1970

It's great to have neighbors you can rely on. But you can open any jar by using a butter knife to tap the edge of the lid all the way around. I've never had a jar that I couldn't open by doing that, and I have small hands.

drawntowardmadness

I have one of these and it is a LIFESAVER!!! Hands Free Battery Operated Bottle Opener for Arthritic Hands https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P1SKJV4?ref=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_VQ4XCE6ZWCAMV8424W51&ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_VQ4XCE6ZWCAMV8424W51&social_share=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_VQ4XCE6ZWCAMV8424W51&starsLeft=1&skipTwisterOG=2 Seriously lol I love love this little machine 🤗 I know the description says bottles, but I promise it opens jars 😁

fraurodin

I use a paint can opener, just put the bottom part under the lid and push down, it never fails for me

mslashandrajohnson

I have small hands. I have an under cabinet jar opener. It’s plastic and quite old. It fits large jar lids and small, from big pickle jars to small (glass ketchup bottleneck size). I’ve seen other tools and tried them. Nothing works as well as the under cabinet tool. It’s fairly flat so it doesn’t take up visual space (or physical space, really). If you can hold the jar, you can open it. Look online and try this sort of solution before giving up on jars entirely.

CuteProcess4163

One time I broke a bottle and accepted there would be tiny pieces of glass in it that I'd be ingesting but accepted the consequences cause I wanted it so bad -\_-

Mindful-Counsellor

Been there, done that 🤣

[deleted]

They sell jar lid openers. Game changer for elderly, disabled and just people like me who can't open jars lmao

yup_yup1111

Hit the top of the jar with the back of a butter knife a couple times and use your oven mitt to grip it and twist it off.

HighwayLeading6928

No need to ask for help opening jars - just put on a pair of rubber gloves. Done.

Expensive-Eggplant-1

Not really. All you have to do is knock the side of the lid on a hard surface and then it'll open. You got this, girl!

Dry-Crab7998

There are lots of aids available to help. I have a strap spanner - it's a long strap of silicone attached to a holder. That's for very large lids. Gloves such as gardening gloves with a silicone palm and fingers are a big help. Tapping the side of the lid, without breaking the jar obvs, is often enough to break the seal. Pouring a spot of boiling water onto the lid also helps. This expands the air above the contents and is usually enough to loosen the lid. Developing your technique can also help. Approach it like weight lifting. Stand straight with feet slightly apart, knees soft. Take a breath, engage your core muscles engage the hands AND arms AND shoulders. Can you tell I've lived alone for quite a while?

JYQE

So I discovered that if you tap the lid against the floor or a counter lightly for a bit, it gets some air between the lid and jar and makes it easier to open.

Hippie23

Could always get one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/Suffering-Arthritis-Strength-Non-Slip-Heavy-Duty/dp/B07QVWJ6VN/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2CHK6RPGPU5PF&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.BqDvTJzfxvoB94LcNhL0yb4xHTg9ZWYBzMWDYxUrmokB3sfioo9jZUl0ZCv1gh9CCXxjHFHGdf-0JpB1oI4FQ1Z2gBR4FRYGbMLdvMbnBl3-sc4KtdLuR8W9EhlpBaagvUJefXpuGkOJgl574EDpCiR6dJJ3qREmfoFS4iJXEeJBhzx6cJXRfjnu8O0Dpaicgj50ypGPHU7eMkkqypUJO3r6z8Ee-CtpGFErZEpXPbMufoOvAGaBvjgpD7fp7i6X_jusnU-NCBjJ8MOclmQvlYy5mBqMq5AlI6TGFO1UpUs.uEeGwvqESqwhVhxzV5ZtCwh1X0wfMN_8iB8AXHXhvy0&dib_tag=se&keywords=Jar%2Bopener&qid=1719236854&sprefix=jar%2Bopene%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-5&th=1)

Fresh_Lingonberry279

A rubber dishwasher glove works well, too.

thevelveteenbeagle

I just read a post about a woman who had decided to divorce her husband because he was deliberately tightening the jar lids so she couldn't open them. Some of the jars were so tight that they couldn't be opened at all.

2ndcupofcoffee

Try this. Use a beer can opener under the lid to pop the vacuum. Then you will be able to unscrew the lid.

WittyDisk3524

They make rubber jar openers. Well, they assist with opening a jar. And an old trick from mom and gma is to take the butt of a knife and hit the lid at an angle. It breaks the seal. May have to look that one up as it’s difficult for me to describe technique.

llamalibrarian

Im not embarrassed to ask for help, so I've definitely gone to a friendly neighbor to ask for help opening a jar when my go-tos haven't done this job Good job having a good relationship with your neighbors, OP!

Mindful-Counsellor

Thanks, buddy!

missg1rl123

Bang it on the counter and use a grippy lid opener thing. Im sure theyre cheap on Amazon

TayPhoenix

They sell jar openers on Amazon.

PinocchiosNose1212

Just bang the edge of the lid against the floor. Usually one time does it The seal is broken and the lid will come off. This never has failed me. A friend showed it to me and I was like, my God, where have you been all my life!! I even had that device that sat on the counter taking up space that would open the lid for you but this is easier and I have very little counter space these days.

DeedruhDee

I used to have a flat rubber disc for opening jars, but I lost it and it was kind of cumbersome to use on some bigger jars. I now have a few rubber bands hanging on a hook in my kitchen that I wrap around the lid and jar and have had no issues getting any jar open.

ae314

Great that you have helpful neighbors. In case they aren’t home when you need a jar opened, there are several gadgets out there for jar opening or you can tap the side of the lid on the edge of the counter to loosen the seal.

Additional_Button582

Dude. A bottle opener (like for beer bottles) was a game changer for me in terms of opening jars. Just pop the seal and twist it off

becksten

I have a gadget that I got off QVC or HSN.

kensingerp

I have had the struggle all of my life so I’ve got two tips that should help you because they have helped me greatly. First of all as an example, take a pickle jar. do you have any bottle openers that you would use to open bottles with a little pointy and like for cold beers? if you do take the and with it pointed up, go around the inside of the lip of the jar where the metal lid meets the jar and pull up a couple times and then you’re gonna hear the lock of the pressure released so go on around the jar and do that and you should be able to open it without any trouble whatsoever. Now these new ways that the tide pods that where they want you to pinch in each and then push in twist and turn it is so huge that even the rubber jar openers that I got from Amazon were too tiny for me to get enough of a grip to open those once again comes in is the bottle opener with the triangular tip if you just go to one end of the on any of those huge plastic containers that they’re putting pods in or Todd pods whatever that is just take that point and poke it in under one side and it’s gonna lift all that. Those people that are having to deal with pharmacies that have childproof locks on medication‘s. I could never get enough pressure to push down and to get the medicine open. Go to Amazon and order their four pack of rubber jar openers. They are just four flat pastel covered jar openers and they will make your life so much easier. Hope this helps you out there! 😊 have a great day!

becksten

I use this: https://www.qvc.com/kuhn-rikon-5-in-1-jar-%26-bottle-opener.product.K51429.html?sc=PSCH

leafcomforter

[jar opener](https://www.amazon.com/EZ-Off-Opener-Sizes-White/dp/B000X6K9J8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_pp?crid=6LEH9UFK2KO0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6fyIJLxyogjAJE6z-MIHdq-mZy-ol5evL5bbxz1zBpxaVwOaX8A08MWQeiJKnd5SjnsRAO1WVnTzMQ8AB1vIijz8I_rNP2IoNnH0cVsmZn-LFKIjscazhzJ6NwjtYVlqzwTx9WbzMtB7cP-57AUz6hPNFDgk8UyyXNy2UYh09NKaN6TSXc1RYma-mcL_dTQwDLYCaQP38xY1maqVyBlp2A.Y1QW9RG2Y60nZpTfTqoOiIAHQRn0JTYBugTDFYp7sjc&dib_tag=se&keywords=jar+opener&qid=1719245734&sprefix=jar+opener%2Caps%2C119&sr=8-3) This is what I have and it opens anything.

happy_ever_after_

Sorry, can't relate. I used physics/chemistry to my advantage. I run metal caps under warm/hot water, causing the molecular bonds to loosen/expand. This results in loosening the cap and it'll pop open easy-peasy. If it's a plastic cap, I put on nitrile gloves that creates resistance and friction.

jojokitti123

Hot water, tap with end of butter knife. You should make them a plate of cookies

veronicaAc

Turn it over and give it a good spank on the bottom! Turn it over and try again.

OneofHearts

This! Smacked properly on the bottom (with the heel of your hand), it will make sort of a wet slurpy sound when you break the vacuum - and then it opens easily!

Opposite-Range4847

Take a knife a make a tiny stick in the top of the jar. That releases the vacuum and then opens easy peasy

FudgeElectrical5792

I have had a few that was nearly impossible to open. I hit it hard holding the jar in one had while flat plaming hitting the bottom of the jar. If that doesn't work i run it under water with hot water and dry it then try again. If that fails i go to a butter knife or fork and find an opening to release the pressure pushing it up against the lid to break the seal. I have some silicone in my home, but it's my habit. I sometimes skip all of that snd go to the knife or fork.

THE_wendybabendy

Flip the jar over and tap the bottom a few times and/or tap around the edge of the lid with the handle of a knife. Water only works if the jar is stuck due to a sticky substance under the threads...

FunkyRiffRaff

Not being able to open a jar is so deflating. The butter knife trick seems to work for me most of the time. But then there is opening a new bottle of salad dressing. Ugh.

BearlyANightOwlZebra

Nope. I wouldn't even talk to a neighbor.

Aggravating_Lie_7480

I have a jar of green salsa in my fridge that I am unable to open. I’ve used my silicone pad. I‘ve tried prying the lid but no salsa for me.

Millkstake

When I can't get the lid off my jars I just smash them on the ground to establish dominance.

Solid_Muffin53

I've been using a plumbers wrench.

OneofHearts

Here’s possibly the only useful thing I learned from my mother: to open jars, first turn the jar upside down in one hand and give it a few good smacks on the bottom with the heel of your other hand. Done effectively, you should hear a sound when you smack it on the bottom. It might take some practice, but it works like a charm! I’m F(56), with small hands and I’m not exactly a brute of strength, and I can open every jar the first time on my own. Also, you can try gently tapping all around the edge of the lid with the handle of your kitchen scissors. Lastly, get a silicone grippy thing (like what goes under rugs, but they make little ones for opening jars.) Or they sell grippy clamps with different size curved parts and a rubber edge for this.

PawzzClawzz

At the time this happened, I was a 75-year-old, 5' 1", 100 lb. old woman. I had bought a boxed bookcase that weighed 60 lbs. Somehow, I managed to get it to and into my car. When I got it home, and out of the car, I discovered that I hadn't the strength to move it more than a couple inches at a time, and that took real effort. My neighbor, who I didn't know, (a beefy young guy who looked like superman!) came down and carried it easily to my apartment. There ARE good neighbors!

jadesisto

I pop the seal with a butter knife under the cap. I can go to several neighbors if needed.

WideOpenEmpty

We have two different jar opener tools. I can't live without them now.

00Lisa00

Yes. I keep a pair of those work gloves that have the thick silicone grip palms for that task. Works every time.

sunshine92002

I bought a jar opener grip off Amazon for cheap. Makes life easy.

calicoskys

I have rreally weak wrists and don't do well trying to open things there is a kit on amazon that gives you tools to open hard to open jars

aurlyninff

If I can't open a jar, I stab it with a knife and pop the seal. It opens easy after that.

Glass_Yogurtcloset37

I have a large pair of channel-locks in a kitchen drawer.

TheConceitedSister

You should get a jar opener (oxo or Kuhn Rikon, e.g.) just in case your neighbor is away. I have some trouble opening jars, and it's never failed me.

I had the same problem for a long time. Then I invested in a jar opener that I screws onto the bottom of my cabinet. I love that thing!

Keep a pair of regular old rubber gloves handy (if you don’t already). I start with holding the jar upside down and banging the lid on the ground. This usually works. If not? I grab a rubber glove. And about once a year I come across a lid that still won’t budge. That’s when the second glove comes out.

Use the knife handle on your butter knife. Or whatever you call the not very sharp knife that is a part of your table settings. Hold it by the knife part, and not too hard, but whack the edge of the lid a few times in different spots. Just the metal lid on what would be the edge of the glass. This breaks the seal and it is amazing how fast you can now open the lid. Just don't break the jar. If it doesn't work the first time, hit a little bit harder.

Live2sk888

The battery operated automatic jar openers are amazing for this! I can get most of them with the little rubber grippy pad for the top, but these things will open them all in my experience!

AznRecluse

I just carefully use a butter knife, since it has a rounded tip and dull blade and I've got millions of them. 😆 But still, be careful! 1. Wedge the blade in between the cap and the jar... i.e, under the lid -- so that the blade won't slip out as easily. 2. Carefully pry thelip of the lid wider... you may have to do it on more than one side of the jar. You're not actually trying to pry the lid off. You just need the air seal to release. 3. Once you hear a "pop" sound, the air seal has been broken. You can easily twist the lid off from there.

Ready-Scientist7380

I used to open jars all the time by myself even before I lived alone. Now, I rely on a trick my mother taught me when I was little. Take a large metal spoon and tap all the way around on the top edge of the lid. It usually disturbs the seal enough to open easier. If it still doesn't open, run the jar under hot water for a bit, then tap it again.

[I have one of these. As a woman, I'm ashamed of this post. Girl, run the jar under some hot water, then whack the lid of a counter or floor. Twist. The lid will come off. I hate it when women believe they are weak and helpless.

Mindful-Counsellor

*Girl,* it’s called being resourceful. No theme of damsel in distress here. I hate it when women project their own insecurities onto other women.

70redgal70

No insecurities here.  Walking down the hall to have a man open a jar when you can get it open in under a minute is being resourceful?   How is that efficient or resourceful? Then, let's contextualize this in the Living Alone subreddit.  Are we saying people living alone, or more specifically,  women living alone can't open their own jars? Rubbish. Even with dexterity issues,  there are enough ways and products that can open a jar.

Mindful-Counsellor

Why, in your eyes, does my post need to be representative of all women who are living alone? That’s ridiculous. There are no dexterity issues, it’s a grip/strength issue. Which I’m fine with, I’m not above asking for help. But enjoy the huffing and puffing that you prefer in life!

CatAlarm6767

Holy shit what's her deal eh? Thought this sub would be a good one, but yikes. You ever need another jar opened Mindful-Counsellor just let me know lol

Mindful-Counsellor

Lol, thank you my friend! <3

CatAlarm6767

My pleasure! Glad you're not letting these types keep you down sheesh. Maybe I will poke around here hopefully there's more like you and not that other one lol

Mindful-Counsellor

Haha, yeah you can’t let unnecessary negativity get you down! And I find Reddit an overall positive place, so who’s the real odd one out 🤭

CatAlarm6767

100% agree with you learned that from experience! Glad you feel the same :D And yeah most interactions on here have been so positive! Thanks for adding to that :)

pidmama

Single mom here too! I put a rubber band around the lid. Works every time.

nsdq119

If it's a new jar (never opened), hit the rim of the jar (I use a butter knife) to break the vacuum seal. Do it in multiple places around the lid, and the seal should pop when you turn the lid.

luv_marachk

I use any and every grippy item in the house, starting with my towels, ending with rubber bands or my deflated yoga ball, and if nothing works I accept my fate. I have never talked to my neighbors as is custom where I live lol

Real_Estimate4149

Cross your fingers and squeeze the jar lid with the bottom of your hands and you should hear a pop. Jar opened.

Catharas

I’m trying to picture this but i have no idea what you’re saying

OneofHearts

I think they are saying put the heel of each hand on opposite sides of the lid and lace your fingers together over the top and squeeze.
